Hello! I cannot THANK YOU AND YOUR WIFE ENOUGH for posting this video!! OMG I have been thinking I am losing my mind over how my two Maltipoos are not eating… then I somehow found your video and it’s going to help us SO MUCH! I had my first night of 3 minutes and their noses were up just like your dog. Your video is the best video I have ever seen because it’s explaining exactly how to correct this eating problem. My goodness I appreciate your help!
I have been using a similar system but only after I took my dog in to the Vet for a physical and blood work prior to be sure it's not a health related issue. (she's in perfect health). So after talking with the Vet she said that a dog will not starve itself, a cat will. So I give her 15 minutes and if she has not finished her food it's gone until the next meal. I feed twice a day morn and eve. It works well because it's all in her stubborn little mind. Yes I went in a panic like most and bought or even subscribed to fresh meals only to have her walk away after a day or two. It didn't matter what the food was or how expensive. I then found a few videos (thanks) like this one. So I realized it really is a game of wills. Don't give in or be mad and discipline your dog, just stay cool and calm and lay down the law. Let their stomach do the talking. He or she will come around.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. It's very helpful. I have a dog that is similar to your dog. (mini Goldendoodle ) she is a very picky eater. I did everything to get her to eat and I ended up getting tired and frustrated. After I watched your video, I did the same method with my dog. She didn't eat her food for 1 day and she ate the food on the second day for her dinner. No more picky!! Now, she eats better. 🥰🥰
Thank you so much for posting this! I followed your advice exactly and now both my dogs are eating the food I want them to eat! It is hard to watch them deprive themselves, so I really appreciated the encouragement! Love the soundtrack and dog-think captions!
I am trying your tips for my 4 months old Cavoodle Puppy who is such a picky eater!! I allow 15 mins instead of 3 mins, today is DAY 1 and when I am about to cave in, I watch your video and it gives me hope! Crossing my fingers!!!
Ahh good luck!! We hope it’s working for you!! The hardest part is really to stay strong and firm and not cave in.. we caved in so many times before finally putting our foot down!
Omg! My Milo is the SAME! I will definitely try this because it’s been SO frustrating trying to get him to eat. I’ve tried 10-15 different types of food so I know that’s contributed to his picky eating habit but I will train him out of it using these tips. Thanks for this helpful video!
We kept changing up his food initially as well in hopes that one will stick but it ended up turning him into an absolute picky monster! Good luck with the process and we really hope it works for you Milo!
@@DoodleDude I am with you. I created an extremely picky eater. I tried fresh food, mixed with fresh food, air dried food, different toppers, broth, you name it, i have tried it. Seeing her losing weight is the hardest part. But i will try your method and see. Hopefully she will respond the same way. I think you are right on about those chew treats and dental treats. I noticed her appetite decreased the following date if I have given him one the day prior. I will stop doing those. Not gonna lie without treats, is difficult to train. Instead, I just play with her often. Wish me luck!
Thank you!! I have 4 yo super picky shih tzu and this method is works! He gave up on day 2 dinner time. Mom win! Mommy learned that mommy spoiled her too much on feeding section 😀
We are on Day 3 fussy eating training. First two days, our young pup would not touch his food. I took the plate away after 3 minutes. Today he finally started eating after on strike for two days. I only gave him 50% of his daily amount as you suggested. He wolfed everything down in one go! Definitely heading in the right direction. Fingers crossed the fussy eater will eat all his meals in the future.
Hi, i have a toy poodle which is 9 months old, he has been on strike for 1 day due to fussy eating, can i know how long can i starve him for ? I am worried for its health as he has vomited twice due to empty stomach.
My girl is the same. Well, she was the same, until from wet food I moved her to Purina Pro dry food. She didn't eat for a whole day. In the end, she gave in because she realised that she wasn't gonna win and she would have starved. People said I was cruel for not feeding her wet food anymore. I simply replied: Is she your dog? They said no. Then, mind your own business.😊
This was very helpful....im in this situation now. Has great health. She wont eat her fresh pet. With alittle boiled chicken. But i will try ur method .hope it works ty
I can feel his pain...kibble looks cold & unappetizing. I give my dog liver over dry food...does the trick. Just monitor his size and amount of liver. They love it & it's cost effective, too
So glad I found your video. My Maltese just turned 9 months old and for the past month or so has become the most picky eater, first she only wanted soft dog food after giving it as a special treat, so I bought all different flavors of the Caesar’s dog food, she stopped eating that. I went back to kibble, she looked at it and walked away, now she only wants treats and even some of those she turns her nose up at. If I’m eating she wants my food so I pretend I’m giving her some and give her the dog food and that was working but I think she caught on cause yesterday she didn’t eat until she had her dinner and even then she waited until almost 9pm to eat. So far today she hasn’t touched her food so I’m gonna take it away and no treats and see what happens. How often does your dog eat? 3 meals or 2?
Oh no, we know how hard it is to manage a picky pup! Milo was absolutely the same! We only feed him 2 meals a day - once in the morning and once in the evening
Such a wee cutie-pie 🥰 My dogs are all rescues, and I've got the opposite problem..... trying to stop them eating everything!! All The Best from your new Scottish Fur Friends 🐶🐯🐶 💚💜🏴
Thank you so much for the tips! About tips #4, when you said giving small snack, does that mean the dog still got snack to eat before bed? So it's not absolutely no food at all if he refuses to eat the regular food?
Really helpful to know how long it took to get him excited about meal time. Did you stay with him while he ate or did you put the food down and walk away?
Glad this was helpful! We put the food out and walk away. One mistake we did previously was babying him too much about eating his meals. So he started expecting that and won’t eat if we don’t. So it’s something we had to recondition him with this training.
This is exactly what I needed to see. I know it’s my own doing for his eating issues but i also give in and worry when he throws up bile or sits around with a grumbling belly. I get up 45 mins early each day to get him excited and to play with him to hope it gives him an appetite and then sit at the table with my tea and silently pray that he eats. I’m gonna give it a week!
@@DoodleDude the process worked perfectly after 10 days. She kept eating normally for a month and never left anything. But yesterday she started it again. So, she’s on a strike since yesterday. Is this normal that they will have to go through the process again? She’s health, we’ve been to the vets, and we have been told that everything is fine. She’s also been playing and running normally, but refuses to eat kibbles.
We don’t want to sugar coat the process so truthfully Milo will still go back to being picky every few months or. Anytime he started being picky we reinforced the process again. But we’ve now had a full year of him just being genuinely excited about his food. Also we did switch his food to Open Farm and have seen him to like it tremendously more. We’ve been feeding him open farm for over a year now and he still loves it!
Can you share your detailed experience with me @nevergo?! We are still in the process and I am trying to be patient but would love to hear another success story to build confidence! Thanks!
@@ashleypickett8731 ya sure,of course, actually i brought a golden retriever and siberian husky mix after 6 months i had a problem with my pup he just stopped eating his food which was i.e.Orijen dog food,i also brought many other dog food for his taste, but he didn't even touch them nor he sniff them, i was very worried about him so i tried searching in RU-vid,so there i came here and hence after 7 days of hardwork he started eating his food which is totally fine 😃
@@nevergo7351 Thank you for the feedback! We are going through this process too but I am struggling to stick with just 3 minutes and 2x per day. Late at night I get those hungry eyes and paws for more food and when I put it down he eats it finally. Did you follow these guidelines to a T? We might need to go back to square one and be a bit stricter to see success!!
Thank you for this . My puppy is 9 weeks old and he will not eat his kibbles . I give him soft food Cesar but I need him to eat his kibbles so I will try this .
What treats do you give for a bedtime snack to prevent vomiting bile the next day? I have a 7month old mini goldendoodle who's an extremely picky eater and she would vomit bile here and there when i try to train her like this :(
Amazing video! I just started this process with my dog too and so far it’s been 2 days and he looks interested in the kibble but hasn’t eaten yet. Did you only feed Milo half portions of his daily meals for a week? Also how long did it take before you were able to increase his food back up to his full daily portions? I’m trying to follow this but it seems so tough even if he eats to only let him have so little for so many days :( I’m feeling too soft hearted!
Hi this is very good video! Can i ask how old was your pup when u do this training? I just got a 4m old cavapoo who was on freezedried and kibble (mix w water diet) now he completely rejecting food n ive to keep playing w the food to entice him to eat…. Extremely stressful when im worried if i do this training the puppy will not have enough nutrients if he fast for too long
Hi Milo was already around 9 months when we started this training. We did consult with our vet first to make sure it is ok so I’d recommend checking in with your vet as well. Your vet will know about your pups health and needs much better and give a better recommendation on whether it’s ok to go with this method :)
This video is incredible! We created a monster too and are in the process of following the system. Can you elaborate on your experience from day 7 to ‘over 3 weeks?!’ We are at the stage of our baby taking bites, but still not finishing the bowl. I feel like we are never gonna get past him eating some bites, enough to survive, but not enough to thrive. Also did you reward during the day with other training tasks with kibble?! Would LOVE your feedback. Thanks so much!!
It took Milo around 2 weeks until he would consistently finish all his food. It really seemed impossible at first. After the first week (2nd week - 3rd week) he would eat the majority of kibble we gave him but always leave some in the bowl. And then at around 3 weeks he started finishing all and would sometimes ask for more. That’s when we started upping his portions until he’s getting the recommended feeding amount. We didn’t increase portions until he was consistently finishing the bowl for at least 3 days. We also didn’t treat at all during this correction period.. Milo is pretty toy/ball motivated so we did training with toys instead. The only deviation from kibble he got was his heartworm and flea meds 😅 We know the pain of a picky eater so really hope this method works for you!!
@@DoodleDude i watched your video and it's amazing, can i ask if your dog had rumbling tummy cause he didnt eat or didnnt eat his normal portion? cause my dogs tummy rumbling loud from not eating. i dont know how to do this training . please help..
Thank you for this video! Will definitely try this on my new toy poodle. He's with us for 3 days already but he only ate last night after being handfed. It was the previous owner who suggested it as it is what they often do. I want him to unlearn that. Hope this video helps.
My Blue a Coton de tulear is picky eater likes only human food We trying to get back on kibble blue is eating very little and we are in zero treats policy for now to correct this picky eating behavior But this is really hard for us
I want to try this but my puppy is only 10 months old and weighs 4 lbs (his normal weight) - He is a teacup Yorkie. So, I'm afraid to let him go without food.
I’d definitely consult with your vet first to make sure this works for you pup too! We consulted with ours before we did just to be extra sure 🙂 happy to answer any questions
Thanks for the video, is this a common issue that just all of a sudden happens ? My 11 month mini golden doodle just started with being picky, Sunny wasn’t eating so I started to add treats mixed into his food, which worked for couple days then added little water to moisten it that got boring, finally made him chicken and rice. Which he gobbled down so I knew it wasn’t a stomach problem. He’s just being picky. I’ll definitely have to try this method before it goes too far.
I’d say it happened gradually for Milo, and we just kept giving in to his pickiness slowly.. like you, it started off manageable then escalated quickly to the point where nothing satisfied him 😅😅 Hopefully this method helps you out as much as it’s helped us!
Hi! Hopefully this helps you! We do not mix any treats or rewarding add-ons because that's how he became picky in the first place. The only addition we do is a meal supplement to help with Milo's digestion
shaking their food in a bag of dehydrated Minos (fish for puppy's)for a few seconds then dumping it in their bowl without any Minos. The smell alone gets them eating. Good luck
We only give him one treat (a dental chew/small piece of jerky) right before bed. No other treats or food throughout the day except for his meals. The treat is only to prevent an empty stomach through the night and throwing up bile the next morning. If you treat him throughout the day, then it defeats the idea that meal time is precious! Once they’re not picky with meals for a consistent couple of weeks you can go back to treating whenever! 🤗
@@DoodleDude Thank you so much for the information! I left my dog with my parents for 2 weeks because I went on a business trip and my dog no longer eats her kibbles, only meat, treats, and wet food. I thought she was sick but vet told me she was picky, I found out then that my dad would always give in to her and would give her half of his steak for dinner 😢. Thank you for the video! Hope this would help her. ❤️❤️❤️
during this time, did you add water or anything to heat up the kibble? Before starting this process, I used to add hot water to the kibble to encourage him to eat. Ideally, I’d like for him to eat it as is straight of the pack
Our 5 mo old toy poodle all of a sudden became really picky on food, we’ve been feeding Him with (breakfast) hardboiled egg w/ boiled peas and carrots (lunch and dinner) ground chicken w/ boiled peas and carrots and some treats in between, He loved these meals but then about a couple of weeks ago He started to not want to eat any of these anymore. We’re getting worried and thought that He might be sick or anything which we hope that He’s not. Can we actually start feeding Him kibble at 5 mos and would you have any recommendation? Thank you!
Id definitely check in with your vet first to make sure everything is ok and healthy with your pup! As with switching food, we’ve done they multiple times and the trick is to ease into it. Don’t switch it out completely at once - start with just a quarter of new food and 3/4 old food and then slowly increase the proportion with the new food. The kibble bags usually have some directions on there too
Wow, I thought I was the only one going through this with my mini goldendoodle puppy. am going to give this a try. I do have a question though. Do you still not give him any treats or any human food? Are you continuing on 3min Kibble + night snack routine?
Hi! When we were doing the training to correct his behavior we didn’t give any treats or human food at all. But now that he finishes his meals consistently we started treating him throughout the day again! If he ever has another picky strike we enforce the 3min rule all over again 😅
My dog is a goldendoodle and she won’t eat! we try and try but she won’t break! she’s in very low energy and very skinny, we are very worried :(. she bearly eats at all we have to hand feed and add broth the the kibble. we once gave in and put in egg into her kibble. we mixed adult kibble which she used to love eating from my older dog! but she doesnt eat it. today i start doing this, i really hope this works. tomorrow we take her to a vet.
Hi there, I have a poodle mix as well. Since your pup ate two meals a day, I know you mentioned that you never offered treats or any of some sort besides water, was there ever a time when your dog vomited bile between breakfast and lunch? Or did it just occur in the morning?
When we were doing picky eater training there definitely were once or twice they he vomited bile in the middle of the day! When that happens we give him a small piece of jerky/chicken to help him put some food in. Now that he’s eating his meals consistently this hasn’t happened though. And we are back to treating too!
It's a great helpful video guys, Thank you! But have you ever thought that maybe your dog is smart and doesn't want to eat kibble because it's highly processed synthetic food and he wants normal dog food that is biologically appropriate for him? like a raw animal meat patty and organs? there are plenty of pet companies now who do this food and deliver it frozen for you.
Hey really liked this video! Just now starting this with my dog! I did have a question though. If the 3 minutes is up and my dog is in the middle of eating do I take the food away from him or let him finish?
Thank you! We do let him finish because we don’t want to encourage him to wolf down his food and eat too fast. So if he’s willing to eat we’ll let him. But if he doesn’t finish we’ll take it away.
Hello..😊..my dog is super picky eater..ive tried giving him human food but I realized that human or table food is not good for them so i decided to go back to dog food..i.hope that we can also be successful like you..when it comes to.him im so soft hearted😞
My puppy eats his food but takes 4 hours to finish and keeps playing in between! Do you suggest I try this method? He eats but he likes to take his own sweet time!
Hey, great vid! i read that Milo rather fast and threw up bile than eat, may i know what did you do when he did throw up bile? cause my dog did that and i freaked out, she's still very picky and im doing all the 1001 tricks i know just to get her to eat. please help....
We fed him a small snack like a piece of jerky or dental treat before bed to hold him through the night and the next day. But not enough where he’s full and don’t need a meal. Since we’ve been doing that he doesn’t throw up bile anymore.
@@DoodleDude Thank you, my dog has GI history and she can have gas in her tummy if she doesnt eat for some time and making the belly noises makes me worried, i mix the wet food w dry food as her meal that she still refusing, but i'lll give this training trick a try... have a nice day!
Hello, we have the exact same position with our 5 month old Mini-Poodle. She’s 7.8 pounds though, so I’m worried she’ll become even more frail. But either way, she has experienced some vomiting of bile, and that is my main worry. When you said you give her a small snack at night to prevent bile, what was that snack? And our pup is close to her spay. Should we continue “force feeding” her by doing tricks with the food and spending hours to feed her, in order to keep her healthy. Or still try this method? Any advice is appreciated from you guys, but mainly the evening snack to prevent bile 😁
For me to avoid misunderstand, so in the beginning, you will only feed him 50% of his normal meal? And then you increase by 5% the next time if he finishes the whole bowl? Also, how many times do you feed him per day compared to his normal schedule? I'm having a labrador and it seems that he's having the same issue, ha ha.
We did 50% of his required feeding amount and then only increase by 5% a day after he’s consistently finishing the 50% every meal for a week. This gives him enough food but not completely full - it’s to enforce the idea that food is scarce and he should treasure it when it’s meal time. But if your dog isn’t extremely picky to start with you might be able to start off with more. Milo was barely eating when he first started … We feed the same number of times as his normal schedule (2x a day). You shouldn’t need to decrease this, just restrict feeding time so food is not left out and readily available 24/7.
Our pup currently has the same issue! I think it’s my fault of adding lots of goodies in his food too early. I mixes his food with fresh food, freeze dried organs, supplements, etc. However, I cut down all those and only stick with his food for now. He has been smelling it, eating it sometime but I took it away after like 5 mins. Quick question, when can I start to mix his supplement in his food again? And if he ever become picky again do we do the same process over and over?
We only started adding supplements back to his food after a couple months of him consistently eating. And yes, as soon as he starts getting picky again we reinforce the 5 minute rule.
please help me, my dog stopped eating her regular food which is (different)meat and rice(for almost 4 years), shes a picky eater, im pretty sure shes just got tired of it because before she actually stopped eating shes showing signs that shes not that interested anymore and she always watch me when i eat waiting for me to give her my food.. now im trying to train her to eat kibbles, its been 4 days now but she only has eaten 8 pieces the other day and 9 pieces today(regular size kibble) she already lost weight since she stopped eating her regular meal more than a week ago..should i continue the training(giving the food on time then take it after 10-20mins until the next meal) thanks!!!!!........😟
Hi! Great video, I have a Pomeranian and he is very picky about eating! I will give this a try! Where did you get your dog bowls? They are so cute! Also the little stand you put them on? Thanks!
Hope this works for your Pom! We got the bowls and stand together as a set from Marshall’s. Highly recommend getting dog supplies at Marshall’s/TJ Maxx - there’s tons of high quality stuff on discount 🤗
Once Milo started finishing his kibble regularly we got back to treating like normal. But I'd recommend making sure that your pup has been consistently finishing his food for a few days first 🙂
trying this cuz i’ve been babying my dog too much and now he doesn’t eat his dry food he thinks i’ll give him more exciting food but i wont starting from now day 1: he didn’t eat his kibbles at all but there was a piece of beef so i put it with his food he ate the beef and didn’t even want to taste the kibbles
That was the exact same situation for us!! 😭 we just kept giving him more and more human food until he was even picky with that! Really hope this process works for you as well as it did for us! Good luck!!
Once he was consistently willing to and finishing his kibble we didn’t enforce the 3 minute rule because we didn’t want to encourage him from eating too fast either. But any time he started being a bit picky again we would use the 3 min rule to let him know it’s kibble or nothing 😅
We’ve now been consistently feeding him OpenFarm! Regular kibble + a couple of their freeze fried raw. He loves it’s and has been the only food he’ll eat consistently. I usually Saran wrap his left overs and depending on the weather either put it in the fridge or leave it out and give it to him for the next meal. But throw it away after 2 meals if he still doesn’t finish!
I'm currently transitioning from chicken to kibble. Should i do the 100% chicken - 0% kibble ... 0% chicken - 100% kibble process that is about adding kibble every 3-4 days in a 25%, or from day 1 make my dog eat its 100% kibble?
I would recommend the transition and not do 100% kibble right away… they tend to get upset stomach if you are doing a drastic switch. And maybe even waiting until after the transition to start the training
3:10 this is exactly how my aspin trained me 😂😂😂 what a brat and I always concede with chicken or else she will starve herself for 3 days or so. 😂😂😂😂
