The baseline elo for players has gone up over the past few years. I know because I used to be an 1100 elo player, but after a year of vast improvement I am now an 1100 elo player.
naah, i took a break for well over a year and people have gotten dumber. i used to be in top 30% with 1000 elo, now i'm nearly in top 20% with 950 elo (rapid)
I've been following this channel for a couple of years now. I've never had a single answer to any of my comments. AT 56:57 he could have taken with his rook, so then he'd have still had a queen (instead of a rook). Yet my comment gets no answer. This is absolutely the last video I ever watch from Nelson.
Thank you so much my brother. Even though im dropping closer to 400 You have helped me alot in terms of gamesense. I dont think much before making moves but ill work on it. But ive fallen in love with your channel and this series. I used to find videos long at first but only when i watched your videos I love them and I am addicted to it. Thanks alot for the goodwork
I never thought I could cross 900 thanks to your rating climbs now I’m 950 and heading to 1000, thanks to your videos that was my main goal before going back to school again 😅❤
I'm watching his videos too, I like them but...when I play I'm doing a lot of mistakes and I'm still at 400. Don't know how and what to improve because everything is unpredicted and unexpected at table. I'm new bytheway.
@@f_society9151 that’s normal my friend just keep watching educational videos solve puzzles and analyse your games every game win or lose you’ll improve without even noticing it, but one important point don’t play when you feel unfocused and burnout if you notice that you lost 3 games in a row don’t play that day leave it, I advise you to leave chess for a week maybe if you feel burnt out, and remember take care of your health, hope you best of luck❤️✨
Yes, this is my experience vs. 900-1100 elo players. Very, very difficult to climb past this ranking. I had a really good win streak and got to 1071, but then had a few bad days and have yo-yoed right back into the struggle to get back over 1000. You really have to be on your game, or you're not winning consistently, even at this level.
This video perfectly fits my situation, my best rating is 929, but I float between 893ish and my top rating. Really struggling in the middle game against higher rated players.
Nelson if you play against enough 850-950 players you'll know that they can easily play at 1400-1600 level in some games, i know cuz i play at that level sometimes as well, it just kind of happens, the main reason we temd to stay at 850-900 is because we are not consistent. So it is definitely possible to play at 1000+ level inconsistently when your rating is 850-900
32:33 what happens if the Queen goes to h4 instead? It looks like they just force the queen trade because there's a fork between your queen and rook, the latter of which gives check and no easy way to stop it. B x g6 looks like a strong counter-threat that might win you a knight, but I'm not sure how that goes tbh. Esp when you only have 1 minute to find a move.
(@5:22) This perfectly exemplifies that saying, “if you find a good move, look for a better one.” In this case, the good move was Qxb7, but the better move was Bxf7+!! 😊
The best advice is to always develop the queen first, talk with all caps in the chat like "HEY WHAT WAS THAT NOISE" to distract the opponent, when you blunder and leave a piece hanging and then you realize it before the opponent moves always be like "haha take it if you dare" and sike them out, and in endgames go hide your king in the corner
I think you're a very good pedagogue. That's it, just wanted to compliment that aspect. Not mentioning any names, but it's for sure something that makes you stand out in chess youtube
ikr? He's NEVER ever roasting them for stupid mistakes like Levy would, he actually only ever says things"oh, that's unfortunate" Top notch chess content, it's all about learning and growing, no silly nonsense. Go, Nelson!
I would argue whether the Legal's Mate attempt is hope chess. If you want to win, you will definitely need your opponent to make some mistakes, so I don't think hoping something happens will automatically mean hope chess. In the Legal's Mate attempt, even if black plays the correct response, the material is still equal, and white has bishop pair and lead in development, that's still a good position
@@danielward7008 yes, if the move worsen the position, that kind of hope should be avoided. But if the move is good anyway, hoping it has a good outcome should be fine
Yeah, if you have the opportunity to ask your opponent a question about a sacrifice, their position, "did they blunder?" then at the minimum you're very likely to make them spend their time.
If you're playing against someone of equal rating, you shouldn't attempt any attacks or tricks that you yourself can refute if you had your opponent's pieces. That would be hope chess. Remember the saying? If you find a good move, find a better one.
@@張謙-n3l while this is mostly true it's also true that if there is a better move in the position you should play that instead. Instead of having an equal outcome if they don't blunder make a play that leaves you ahead no matter what they do.
Great video, thank you. I love when fantastic players are humble and admit their errors. Makes me feel better about my bad games and want to continue playing to improve.
Im between 900 and 1050 and there is so many underrated people like either you have a game where you and the other player have a elo score of 1600+ or you having a shocker and the elo score says it’s 500 vs 300 … i won a game with a elo score of 2100 while my opponent had a score of 1900 on a 60 move game i wish you actually gain more points when you played like a 1600 that you gain like 20 for a win when your actually elo is 1000
@@mirkof2068 that wouldnt be fair as you are most likely not capable of playing at an elo rating of 2100 on a consistent basis but even 600 play at the level of 1600 then eventually go back to playing like a 600
@@juscripz1362I think a slight increase would still make sense. Just a couple points at the lower elos would help the people who more consistently play well level up faster. But then you would have to make it so you lose more/gain less when you play below your Elo, making it harder to level up if you are not consistently playing better than you current Elo. May or may not be a bad thing, idk
@@vPegasus I can relate, but that''s just not how it works. The ELO system is like a currency, what one player loses goes to the winner instead, it's a closed system more or less (in ideal case) so messing around with the formula would lead to unwanted effects akin to inflation or deflation in the currency example.
Just watching through, and at 6:00 you talk about attraction tactics, but in the example listed the King moving to E7 where you use knight to d5 to further deflect, but if you instead went Qe6 it's checkmate. I'm sure you saw it (I'm 1100, not even close to you), just one of those things that kind of irritated me :D Fantastic video so far though, enjoying the watch.
Scandinavian where you take with the Queen and put it on the side of the board is my favorite opening for black. I can't stop myself from playing it lol
@@jurajlitvanyi5410I’ve caught so many players pre-moving the Scandi Qa5 variation with the Leonhardt in 1200 rated blitz 😂 and the amount of tempo that you gain on the queen with Ra2 + Ra5 means that you have a massive advantage in development that only super-booked up Scandi players can manage (which isn’t common at all).
I wonder what would have happened if black played Queen to H4 at 32:16??? Might have been a good move? Threatens white Queen and the tsk of the rook? What would be white’s counter move?
Nelson will you play the Haxo Gambit in the next AverageJoe video? I'm 1300 and I've had some crazy success with it lately & my opponents fall into it every time. I've won 10 games just this week with my opponents all playing the same 10 moves in the opening.
1.e3 doesn't NECESSARILY mean that someone is abdicating the center. I played 1.e3 PRIMARILY to play into the Bird while dodging the From, but against 1...e5, my plan was to play 2.d4 and go into a reverse French.
Nope. It's not a free rook. Try counting slower. They would be equal in material and he would keep the pin. Also with low time queen exchange would make things easier.
I love these series. Idek how majority of people that are in the 1000-2000 elo be watching Hikaru or magnus playing blitz games as though they can process what’s going on.
Hello chess friend, It seems you didn't (even) notice the horse on h4 earlier As soon as he pinned your queen, he could easily have moved his horse to f3 and attack your rook once more So I think he was just randomly lucky otherwise he would have taking advantage of your mistake much better To prevent this next time from happening, just eat the pawn with your queen instead of your rook. Good lesson Cheers 👍🏻💙
The 900 range was the most difficult to me. Now Im at 1100-1150, but whenever I get back under 1000 its a struggle to return. Now I'm feeling that its not that difficult, the games are a bit more as expected, and I lose always by some blunder.
Ha, I tried that trick against the Philador defense with the knight on E5 to set up the trap and they didn't take the knight, they pushed the pawn to D5. Blocking the bishop and winning my queen for free.
Im new to chess an no where near seeing these things. Love watching but is hard to learn advanced moves so early. Could you do a think like a 500 elo? Knowing zero lines, Knowing basically how the pieces move only. With an impatient push mentality!
At 21:00 what's wrong with e5? That's what jumped out at me, but I'm really quite bad at chess so I'm assuming there's a good reason you didn't mention it.
26:45 he should’ve played e5, I found a tactic where you win a piece for a pawn because the threat of checkmate. Even confirmed with an engine and it agreed with me EDIT: didn’t realise he talked about it at 40:40
@@capitalcats4339 Nah, I'm a noob and it's fine. Just a small tweak to the Dutch, which I have seen Nelson play before. It's a short opening with a clear square to fight for.
at 56:57 Why didn't you take with your rook. If the queen took your rook you'd then be able to take with your queen and you'd have your queen instead of a rook. If they didn't take your rook, you'd still have Qd8 to protect your rook and get your queen to safety.
question @14:40 instead of en passant winning the d pawn why not long castle pinning the pawn to the queen? and then you have the rook on the "open" file. thanks
It's just cause anyone around 1000 and below can super blunder... I'm right at 1000 and I get in a hurry trying to act like I'm hikaru making fast moves then I blunder every piece I have followed by a hefty resign
Im 950 and frequently stockfish says i play like a 1400 and my opponents like 1400 also. I gues youtube channels has been doing a great job o teaching us the fundamentals.
26:30 What am I missing? If they go Ng6 you just trade it with your bishop then take their other knight... Edit: I guess I should wait for your post-game review.. :)
A question if anyone knows?? I have played on a new account since last night, around 500 elo odd, iv since played 11 games and won each game im now rated 1039. my question is, how comes Nelson has played much more games than me on his speed run account but still is under 1000 elo... I don't understand! thanks if anyone knows
When you make a new account, your first game you will lose/gain ~150 rating points, your second game you will lose/gain ~100 rating, your third game ~75.. until after a handful of games you get to the standard rating system where you lose/gain 8 points for an opponent at your rating. They do it like this so you get assigned your actual rating faster when you make a new account. A speedrun account like Nelsons is set to the standard system from the very first game so he can only gain 6~12 points per game. Additionally, if you beat someone 200+ points higher than you, you can gain 15+ points, and will only lose a few points if you lose. Vice versa for opponents 200 points lower rated. Also, if you draw an opponent higher rated than you can still gain 1~4 rating and vice versa.
