Stuck in the house with the kids? Us too. So we're passing the time by doing something fun and productive, like building this sweet Mini Trebuchet! The project is made using basic tools (Saw, Drill, and Hand Saws) and is glued together with Titebond Quick & Thick amzn.to/38WkbGt so we're not waiting around for parts to dry. You'll also need some 1/2" thick wood or plywood, string, a couple of screw eyes, and a thin metal or wood dowel. A quick trip to the hardware store and you should have everything you need.
You can built this project in an afternoon with the kids. It's a great way to pass the time. Just be sure you don't launch anything that can poke out an eye.

now ramp up the science and tune it together. I don't remember all the details so look it up but I think you want the projectile weight to be 1/20th the counterbalance weight and iirc you can tune the range / throw angle by bending the tip of the nail around.

When my daughter was young I tried involving her in projects. We tiled her bathroom, put hardwood floors in our house etc... She never really seemed interested, and I felt a bit disappointed. She now owns 2 homes and does all the her own work, and I couldn't be prouder.

What a great 'dad and child' video. In my day, my dad used to take a bandana, some string, and a big hex-nut, and tie up a parachute. We'd wrap that sucker up, throw it as high as we could above the yard, and watch it unfurl and sail to earth. We spent a lot of quality time fetching it from tree branches, but in the end, it's all happy memories. And in my memories, I did it. (So I repeated the same with my daughters 20 years later...)

You are so right about be patient with kids around the shop. the important is showing the respect to the tools, bond a relationship, and creating memories. my daughter the other day asked me to build a bathtub for her barbie, I said only with you build with me, and she said LETS DO IT!!!! My heart melted. I am downloading your free project (thanks by the way).

I teach various shop classes for high schoolers in Nebraska and we do this in our intro to engineering and robotics class. Make the arm counterweight side to sling side ratio 1:3.75 in length and the projectile to counterweight ratio 1:133. We use steel shot in a sealed and taped bag for the counterweight so you can dial in the exact weight. Bend the nail on top of the arm forward and backward to adjust the release point. It's a fun project!

Couldn't agree more. Doing projects with my kids in the shop.. I do 90% of the work, they lose interest or don't have the patience etc etc. But i noticed as long as they do a little of the beginning work , a minute of the middle and then the final 2 seconds of the end.. they think they did way more and seem interested in doing something again.. I hope.

You marked up that kid bad. Tattoo sleeve and glasses. Mini me. My daughter loves being in the shop has her own workbench and hand tools. Even handmade mallet that we built together. Got her interested getting her to help me organize shop. And designing tool holders for the tool wall. Worth every inconvenience I have experienced

The trebuchet looks great! If you want it to throw a bit farther, try bending the pin (headless nail) a bit forwards. Just a couple of degrees will do it. This will delay the release of the sling so that it throws more forwards and less up.

I love your comments about working with what kids will give you. I've been working on a chair for my six year old daughter's Winnie the Pooh doll for probably 6 months now. Each time she gets interest, we go and do a bit more. In between, it sits. I'm getting to the point where I'm probably going to finish assembly myself but she has loved every minute we have put into it whenever we have done it. Stay safe!

It would be easy for me to make it look like we’re the perfect Woodworking family and my kids love the shop. But I prefer to show reality. And the reality is, they just aren’t that interested yet. The most time they spend there is passing through on their way to the car. 😂

Thanks for the tip on not forcing kids be in on ALL aspects of "their" build...I stress over doing projects with them trying to have them see it through every step of the way...partly I feel guilty doing some of the project without them, but hearing from you on this has now changed my perspective. Thanks!

My son is 8 as well. He and I made a leprechaun trap. I worked out the design with him (even though I did it myself originally) and then I prepped a lot of the pieces, but kept some final cuts for him and we did the assembly and testing. He went in and out of interest, much like your son did, but he helped screw things together. Someone asked him about it and he told them that he pretty much built the whole thing. And that was my goal!

I have 2 boys 11 and 8. They have their own space in the shop to come in when they want to for as long as they want to which sometime is not long at all. Lol. I gotta say I love seeing them swell with oride when they make anything. I enjoy watching and teaching them the craft and they are starting to understand what all goes into making stuff. They even work together in rare occasions. LOL

THANK YOU! Especially for the last comment. When I was a kid I was always curious when my father worked on some furniture project for the house and I was eager to help, bu the task he gave me were too difficult for my small hands and weak arms, so I got bored, he got frustrated and I was sent away from the project. It happened twice or thrice and I've lost interest in crafts and manual hobbies for most of my life since a couple of ears ago. Thank you for being an amazing Dad and sharing your passion with Matteo (wonderful Italian name by the way) with patience and understanding behavior!

I tried getting my boys interested in woodworking. Let them run the table saw all by themselves. Same for the miter saw and arc-welders. The pneumatic nailers were fun for awhile but even that passed. I guess it's just harder now to keep a 4-year and 3-year old interested.

I personally have so many qualifying vulnerabilities, I better get on with my own DIY pine box .. but your lovely video made me smile. I miss the woodwork/whittling sessions with my 6 grandchildren (ages between 4-9), who had zero experience with the joys of working with something not Lego or Minecraft. It looks like no cuddles for me until June. But six pre-cut trebuchet kits are now in production with age-related degrees of detail and assembly challenge. PVA glue, rubber bands to clamp, two grades of sandpaper and cooking oil to polish to a nice matte finish. Their Mums, who I trained ages ago, will doubtless supervise, whilst mocking their respective unskilled "better" halves, who will no doubt peer over their I-Pads in bafflement. I agree about attention span and graded baby steps (I started them with "How to whittle a pencil point) and our "Club Salute" has become a wave of ten intact fingers. Each ! An inspiring morale-builder. Stay safe & well. Warmest wishes from across the pond in Myles Standish's birthplace.
