Gerry Rafferty was a great musical artist, with Stealer's Wheel on this great song, and on his own. He later did "Baker Street" , a classic, and other great songs.
Remember living in a children's home in '73 sitting outside the back door listening to this on the radio. The early to late mid 70's were just the best. Wizzard, Queen, Sweet, David Bowie, et al...
If you ever confused “Stuck in the Middle With You” with a Bob Dylan song, then mission accomplished: The tune was meant as a Dylan parody. The lyrics themselves - think, “Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right” - were intended to represent an industry cocktail party. Though the Scottish band had three studio albums and lead singer Gerry Rafferty went on to have solo hits like “Baker Street,” “Stuck in the Middle With You” has become particularly cemented in music history thanks to its placement in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and, in more recent years, as the theme song to the Netflix show Grace and Frankie.
Gerald Rafferty 16 April 1947 - 4 January 2011 age 63 Although Gerry's final years were very sad, we still love him and all the memorable music he produced for all of us to enjoy for many generations to come.. Thank you Gerald..
Gerry Rafferty was a really great song writer, singer/musician & producer. He lived his life the way he wanted to live it . I remember the first time I heard Baker Street and it still blows me away to this day. God bless ya man and thank you.
Every time I read, about anyone, "He lived his life the way he wanted to live it", and then who died from alcoholism or drug use, I have to laugh No, mate, he didn't. He lived the life of an alcoholic. Nobody chooses that life It happens, because of genetics and/or childhood experiences. But, no, he didn't live his life the way he wanted to live it. He lived the life he ended up living
@@squirrelbutler2119 actually alcoholism is also a choice but also genetics but if you PICK UP drinking and GET HOOKED .ITS NO ONE ELSES FAULT BUT THE ONE PICKING IT UP
@@michaelbarkerjr7333 You need to stop shouting in your posts. "actually"..... And you also need to do some research, rather than rely on smug holier-than-thou declarations about 'fault'. I work with street people addicted to alcohol, crack, opiods, etc. None of them "chose" the hell they're living in. So, get off your morally superior high horse, do some research, go and volunteer with your local soup kitchen or shelter, make time to talk to those people, and learn how very wrong you are.
I without doubt regard Gerry Rafferty .As immortal the songs the man wrote also instrumental playing the guitar .As well as being a Pianist .A world class musician as i have said previously .Gerry never as far as i knew covered tracks fom other Artists . So he has lead by example in the world of singing and being a lyricist.to
People just don't get it..... it is just sublime effortless melodic singing. If Gerry was seen leaping around it would have just detract from the wonderful performance he always gave and the fantastic warm production that was always the trademark of his music. I'm just glad he made beautiful music .
I always felt like the beatles when I heard gerry rafferty, I think he has some of lennon, george and paul voices all together, frankly. the sweetest voice in rockn roll ever
and you know what, now that I came to think about it, it is actually more than that, it is his sweet voice on top of sweet melodies and chord progressions that the Beatles particularly were known of, and especially George Harrison. So no wonder he made us think about the Beatles a lot.
nope. Can't make that claim about any musician. And as much as I like Gerry's music, he ain't in the same class as Lennon-McCartney or any number of songwriters.
Born in "62..I grew up in I think the best musical era. Gerry Rafferty was just phenomenal. What a voice!!!...He's singing but I can hardly tell since he hardly moves his mouth. Great lyricist, singer, musician, humble and Scottish like myself. Loved his songs very much.
Us Scots are wee Nation .But profoundly profoundly proud of our genealogy Gerry is enormously inspirational to all generations within the music Industry.😂
Here I am, born in '63; must agree; best musical generation. I mean, young enough to grow up with '60's and '70's music. I was not an adult for it, but it formed my psyche.
One of the best & unique voices EVER ... very soothing tone and range. Talented song writer too.. some wonderful songs that added wonder and magic to my childhood. Thank you Gerry Rafferty 🙂
Always loved Stealers Wheel’s back catalogue too, I wish more people would have a look at their other stuff, one of the most underrated groups out there.
I listened to this song originally in the discos and clubs in the '80s and was so alienated from popular music didn't recognize it for the brilliant song it was ... until of course Trainspotting.
Wow, the boys in Stealers Wheel (Especially Gerry) are looking YOUNG! Gerry playing his famous guitar which was on the Album cover for his solo breakthrough "City to City".

Listened to this song when I was a kid and my brother was in a band, then as a teenager, then when I met my ex husband, up until now. I love this band, the way they use auto tune in this day and era it literally means any Joe or Jane can record a record, but bands back in the day used their God given talents, vocals and writing abilities to put forth messages that we as listeners took and made our own comforts out of. I started smoking/drinking/drugs at the age of 9 to numb my trauma and fit in, I'm around 5 years clean, for some reason I'm not one of the people who can do the "4 years, 5 months, 5 minutes, 2 seconds clean", I can't even remember the date I actually stopped dope and drinking, but I did, and most believe that you can't do it unless you are ready and do it for yourself, thats absolutely BULLSHITE as I did it for my child, because I liked being numb, not remembering, not having nightmares, not feeling but I LOVE my child more. This band and its music was there for me lots throughout my life when I needed comfort, just listening to their soothing jams gives you peace, takes you out of places you don't want to be in and puts you in amothers for as long as you want to be there. Thank you for making this beautiful music for us. Thank you for being your amazing selves everyone. Peace and much love sent from Ontario, Canada.
❤ I hope you’re still doing well with your sobriety. Gerry Rafferty’s music helped me through a very hard time recently, and I guess I’m still going through that hard time and still listening to Gerry.
i have nothing but admiration for gerry rafferty and his music. hope he was a good family man to you all, alan and your siblings :) RIP mr. r and thank you for the music and the memories!

Halfway through when the lead singer is singing clowns to the left of me! Then he looks left! Jokers to the right of me! He looks right! Classic! Great band highly underrated!!!
Thank you Alan for this video! I was 15 when this performance happened - & I've been a fan forever! Today's music just doesn't cut it. I revisited the song after re-watching Reservoir Dogs. I still just about lose it when one of the bad guys (Mr Blonde) is dancing around with a knife after cutting off the cop hostage's ear, & then again with a gas can on way to, during, and after dousing him in gas. He looks so joyous doing so. But then again, listening to this masterpiece makes me joyous too! Definitely a priceless Tarantino movie...with most excellent music. RIP Gerry. They just don't make them like you anymore!
Well I don't know why I came here tonight. I've got the feeling that something ain't right. I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair, And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs. Clowns to the left of me! Jokers to the right! Here I am stuck in the middle with you. Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you, And I'm wondering what it is I should do. It's so hard to keep this smile from my face. Losing control and running all over the place. Clowns to the left of me! Jokers to the right! Here I am stuck in the middle with you. When you started off with nothing And you're proud that your a self-made man. Ooooo-ooo-oooh And your friends they all come crawling, Slap you on the back and say Please . . . Please . . . Trying to make some sense of it all But I see it makes no sense at all. Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor? I don't think that I can take anymore. Clowns to the left of me! Jokers to the right! @jordidwdw That is Gerry Rafferty on lead vocal with the guitar that has "Gerald" painted on it. I'm guessing you've seen the official video for the song in which Joe Egan (the other bloke on guitar) mimes to Gerry's vocal. This was because at the time it was filmed, Gerry had temporarily left the band, before returning. This has led to some people thinking Joe Egan does the vocal on the track, but I can assure you it is Gerry......
So a friend of mine pointed out to me a couple of days ago that the real lead singer of the song regarding the actual music video who had the guitarist Joe Egan who was lip syncing to Gerry Rafferty's vocals. I was completely confused and taken aback but he sent me the link to this video and now I see for myself. The only other two songs I've ever heard by Gerry were Baker Street and Right Down the Line so I just didn't make the connection but yeah he has a fabulous voice!❤️
Thank god there's an actual video of Gerry with this song.. that promo video I always see with this song confuses that heck out of everyone with the other guy miming to Gerry's voice. Thanks for this upload Alan! I was almost wondering if Sheryl Crowe was gonna jump up on that stage, bump Gerry over, and steal this song's riff and start singing 'All I Wanna Do'.

@RetroCool73 It's Gerry on lead vocals, with Joe Egan sitting beside him on guitar. Rod Coombes is on drums. Paul Pilnick on lead guitar, Tony Williams on Bass guitar, and Luther Grovesnor also appears on guitar although he did not play on the original track.

The name Ariel Bender came from a comment that Lynsey de Paul came out with after Mott's original guitarist Mick Ralphs walked down a street bending car aerials in frustration, and Ian Hunter suggested that as a pseudonym.
