My question is how far are people, in general willing to go to defend an idea?

Bernie Sanders is the Curator of all that is ethical, moral and worthy of the soul of the United States of America. For all around the world who have a vested interest in humankind, hear Bernie Sanders's words.

I'm reposting this comment I wrote on another Al Jazeera video about the student protests: 1. University students across the world and throughout history have always been at the vanguard of new thinking, different from their elders. That's just because of who they are - young people, with bright minds, able to see and think with the facts before them, unencumbered from the old ways of thinking and conventions (and previous experiences, good or bad). These new thoughts are not necessarily always anti-war, e.g., in the pre-WWI era, patriotism and a fervor FOR war was the common thinking amongst the young men in universities across England and Europe, simply because none of these young men had experienced the horrors of a true war for well over a generation. And so these new thoughts from the young in the universities are also not always right or well informed by previous experience, nor do they always take root in the rest of the society, but very often, they do mark a shift, a phase change in the way that their societies will look at long standing issues forever. This is what happened with the way Americans looked at their military and American foreign wars after the Vietnam War era anti-war protests. It was a generational change that did take root in American society. 2. We are now on the third iteration of Israel, Israel v.3.0. While the Jewish people have always considered this to be Their Promised Land, given to them by Yaweh, the truth is that other non-Jewish peoples have ALWAYS lived there before they arrived, well into prehistoric times. And so the reality, the truth, is that whenever each version of Israel has been established, those people have had to be removed, so that the Jewish people could claim the land as theirs. And so I just find it amazing that the vast, vast, vast majority of people in the USA, especially the devout Christians who claim to support Israel, don't understand that simple fact. Have they never actually read the Bible? What exactly do they think these phrases mean: ??? ======================= Joshua 6: 20-21 When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. They devoted the city to the LORD and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it-men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. ======================= My Bible reading devout Christian fourth grade teacher read the full story of Joshua 6 to us one day in class, many many decades ago, when such things were still allowed in public schools in America, and that story, from the very first time that I heard it, when I was a mere child, ALWAYS bothered me - this story of how the army of the Israelites destroyed the city of Jericho and wiped out all its people. Did Joshua 6 never bother anybody else? The destruction of Jericho was a war crime, the Original Sin in the Creation Story of The First Israel. A War Crime imprinted into the Holiest Book of Christianity itself, a War Crime that was sanctioned by Yaweh Himself. Yep, that's right. In order to establish each and every iteration of Israel, Jewish soldiers have always had to go into the Promised Land and drive off and/or exterminate the people who were there already. That was true for Israel v.1.0, v.2.0, and v.3.0 3. Modern Israel v.3.0 had its origins in the Balfour Declaration during WWI, a foolish British political scheme to create trouble for the already tottering Ottoman Empire by encouraging the emigration of Jews into Ottoman controlled Muslim Palestine, and then was really given full life because of the Holocaust of WWII. In 1948, a Jewish Army buddy from WWI and later former business partner of US President Truman, Edward Jacobson, was tasked with a mission to lobby Truman for support during the UN vote on the plan to partition out a new Jewish state of Israel from Palestine. The US State Dept at the time was against this UN Partition plan, but Jacobson managed to convince Truman to support it. Thus Israel v.3.0 was born. In 1972, as Israel was reeling from the initial Arab successes of the Yom Kippur War, Henry Kissinger cast the survival of Israel as being key to the U.S. policy of containment of the Soviet Union, and so began the massive multi-billion dollar arming of Israel by the U.S., paid for by US taxpayer money. Previously, the US had stayed out of the business of supplying arms to Israel. After 1972, every year, American taxpayers have been giving at least $2-5 billion to Israel. That was the biggest sea change in US foreign policy since the White House visit by Ed Jacobson in 1948. 4. Because Israel v.3.0 rose out of the aftermath of the Holocaust, it has been easy for its supporters and propagandists to denounce anybody who criticizes any war crimes or other cruel actions committed by Israel as being "Anti-Semitic". And, of course, if the critic is Jewish (like Bernie Sanders), that person is a "self-hating Jew". Well, whatever. It's become such a trope, such a knee jerk reaction, that anybody with a brain can see through this propaganda. 5. I do see these widespread protests in the universities in the U.S. as the beginnings of a new sea change in regards to US foreign policy on Israel. I remember the Vietnam War era protests. It was very similar. The standard mainstream news media and politicians at the time all denounced the student protestors. Four university students at Kent State were shot to death by the National Guard soldiers sent to quell the protests. Yeah, the Vietnam War protests were actually much, much worse. And then ... some 10-20 years later, those students grew up, matured, and started political careers so that they could influence the wheels of power in America ... and eventually, they took control and started making some real changes in America. 6. The people of Israel have changed drastically over the decades, and their worldwide image has changed, from the brave, plucky survivors of the Holocaust, into ever more far right-wing nationalist, pro-Greater Israel, and ultra-religious extremists. Every year, tens if not hundreds of thousands of Israelis leave the country, emigrating to the US and elsewheres, generally tired of the neverending war and onerous living conditions in Israel that greatly favor the ultra-religious as their own separate highly privileged state supported welfare class, while, at the same time, ultra-nationalist and ultra-religious Jews from the US and other countries as well as ex-Soviet Jews move INTO Israel. About 1/6 of Israelis are now from the ex-Soviet Union. Ironic, really, because American military support for Israel began in 1972 because Israel was supposed to be a bulwark against the spread of the influence of the Soviet Union in the Middle East. All the previous peace loving Israelis open to the idea of a two-state solution have mostly if not entirely left the country. Israelis who support a two-state solution are now a tiny microscopic minority in Israel. The idea of simply exterminating or expelling all the Palestinians from Israel has over the years moved from an extremist idea that could not be talked about openly and become .... well, a centrist viewpoint in the ever increasingly extremist politics of the government of Israel. 7. Increasingly, Israel, which used to enjoy bipartisan support in the US, has become a divisive political issue. Netanyahu himself pushed hard to make Israel a partisan political issue in the US, openly throwing his support to the Republican Party in the 2012 US elections If you look at the history of the previous versions of Israel, that's not really a smart move. Anybody remember King Zedekiah? His story is in the Bible also. Yeah, look that up. Netanyahu reminds me a lot of King Zedekiah.

The economy can entirely collapse for all I care, we must end this genocide at all costs. Human life is priceless. No human can truly call themselves free knowing that even one of our own is suffering. We must all bear the burden, and do whatever it takes to save the Palestinian people.
