If the teacher doesn't like questions, then you might be in a cult. Questions are important, and should never be dismissed outright. If the teacher treats all questions with respect, then over time, the more questions a student asks, the more the teacher and student will learn. They will learn which questions are important, and which questions are the right questions, and why the question is the question in the first place. The nature of the question give insight into the student's mind, and into the art itself.

GOOD POINT IAN! I realize that this is only 5 min out of a private lesson but I couldn't help but notice the student's impatience. So I wonder how to best handle this paradox: sharing your precious wisdom with us, your RU-vid audience, while being totally present for the individual paying you for a private lesson so that (in this case, he) doesn't feel he's just part of the larger RU-vid audience. Just a rambling thought based on your student's impatience as evidenced through his body language.

A certain famous teacher told me directly in an online workshop to not ask questions or try to connect dots, just do the exercises exactly as they described and be quiet.

That is unfortunate. I can’t imagine any of my teachers saying that…although I can imagine being told to be quiet. :). I can think of a couple of teachers whose fame is based on one or two “stupid master tricks”. They really don’t like questions because they themselves are not interested in the answers. Questions undermine the cultish nature of their business model.

Isn't Chi the steam that rises off freshly cooked rice? ;-). [Very old explanation - a good one, too! - from a Chinese student during the Nixon years.]

Yes, as accurate and relevant as any translation. Some linguists might argue that qi never meant "energy". But "energy" doesn't really mean energy, either.

can relate. my teacher always replies with "just do it" 90% of the times he gets a question. after being an instructor for a few years, I think I understand why he said that. those questions are so tiresome and not at all useful for the student's progress because most of them are just to show off or just to make conversation

I find that if a question is tiresome, then I need to answer it earlier in the curriculum, or train the students to answer it themselves, or come up with more creative answers. My best teachers never seemed to tire of my questions, even though I am now embarrassed by some of the questions I asked. But yeah, some of those “clever questions“ can be irritating. So, I tell myself that if I can be irritated by a question, my mental tuishou needs improvement.
