Not really, English is not a colonial language if you are a native speaker... Spanish is not a colonial language but an Indian one, if you are a Mexican 75% Indian blood, and you speak only a language: Spanish becomes an Indian language because your are an Indian. Of course you can call it "Latino" to soften the effect, but nothing changes

"brutal" language lol wtf does that even mean ? English is the number 1 international language. By this logic USA should drop english and start teaching in Native american languages
You’re protesting against an entire language because of apartheid, and then replace it with English, the language of the largest empire that ever existed. What. The. Hell?
@David John Murray Reynolds the people who spoke Afrikaans were the ones who implented apartheid, hell apartheid is an afrikaans word in itself. The people who spoke English, particularly outside of South Africa, were against apartheid, even the white English speakers in South Africa were either remarkably less pro apartheid or even anti apartheid
Why remove Afrikaans classes when you can add classes in other native languages? That way more people can be accommodated. Removing a language is a step backwards, not forward.

@@DaddyAZTL Coloured is the official term used in South African demographic census. It refers to non white, non black tribes and non Asian. The makeup the majority of the population in the western half of the country.
@@DaddyAZTL, there's three basic racial groups in South Africa; Blacks (Negroid), Whites (Caucasian) and Coloured (Capoid). So in order to explain Capoid, go back to between 4,000-6000 years ago, the time of the African diaspora, this refers to the Negroid diaspora from the general area of the Congo today. South of the Sahara runs an arbitrary line, called the Bantu line (the primary Negroid people). North and south of the Bantu line people were different, physically (racially) and culturally i.e. north of the Bantu line wealth was measured in camels, south thereof in cattle etc. So in short lets stick to the diaspora south of the Bantu line, people moved roughly from the west to the east across Africa and therefrom south, obviously the actual migration routes were slightly more complex than that. Nonetheless, the Negroid people moved into the territory of the Capoid people (southern African people who occupied the territory roughly up to Kenya, they used to be the dominant southern African people). The African diaspora has resulted in these people being today only still present at the southern tip of Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and southern Angola). Today knows as the KhoiSan people, the Khoekhoen (KhoiKhoi) and San (Bushman) are the only living members of the Capoid race. Remnants of Capoid are still present among the Hadza of Tanzania etc, but as I explained they were basically replaced by the Bantu people during the African diaspora. So in South Africa there's a group called the Coloureds, they include a number of 'people', including the KhoiSan (both groups and their various tribes), it also includes the Malay people brought here as slaves during the Colonial Period and prior to 1840, with the start of workers unions and segregated residential areas etc, some people at least mixed, many of whom, both the former slaves and these generally mixed groups mixed primarily with the indigenous people, i.e. the KhoiSan. So to a more or lesser degree Coloured people are closer connected to the original people of the land, the KhoiSan, even though all would not regard themselves as KhoiSan directly. Other groups will also have KhoiSan influence because of the diaspora, for ex. the Xhosa, but here they were incorporated (sometimes by force and sometimes by choice into the Xhosa community, so in other words they became part of the Xhosa, so Black). Coloured is not mixed race, Black and White do not make you Coloured; Negroid and Caucasian equals Mixed Race not Capoid or Coloured. Coloured is an identified cultural group, strongly vested in the ways and heritage of the original inhabitants of the land, prior to the arrival of the Negroids and the Caucasians. Coloureds are an officially recognized minority with their numbers being fractionally higher than the numbers of the Whites. Whites are roughly half-half, I would say slightly less Afrikaans speakers (or the Boers) than English first language speakers, but when it comes to the Coloureds the scales shift and yes, the majority are Afrikaans first language. Afrikaans is one language, but many will say that there are slight dialectical differences. Many in South Africa will proudly call themselves Coloured, a distinct broader cultural group that include many specific groups, such as the Khoe and San tribes and the Cape Malay. Coloureds (sometimes referred to as Brown, especially in the Western Cape) are not Black, they're not White and they are not mixed race, thus not to be confused with POCs, the now very fashionable term from the West. A POC is not a Coloured in South Africa.
@@DaddyAZTL coloured is a broad term in south Africa who people who are mixed, sort of their version of creole. They're descendants off early white settlers who intermarried with black or cape malay women. Most afrikaans speaking are actually coloured, not white.

There are over seven million native Afrikaans speakers in South Africa. The majority of them are not white. To dismiss the language as a relic of apartheid and racism is just ignorant. Its history stretches back 350 years and it has just as much right to be used as any language. Now if you pay for a university course in English and it is being taught either partly or fully in Afrikaans that's a problem, but to demand the banning of all instruction in that language for no other reason than race hatred or revenge is just racist and counter productive.

I think the main problem here is South Africa has a lot of different people groups with different corresponding languages. The English didn't actually do much against the Native Americans. In fact they were attempting to create a Native American Nation which was a contributing cause of the US invasion of Canada in th war of 1812 (which should really be given a proper name) You're also ignoring the fact that the British are responsible for 100 years of relative peace ending in 1914 with the outbreak of WW1. They outlawed slavery in 1833, they also set up the West Africa Squadron which ended the atlantic slave trade and freed 150,000 slaves. They also established the first free colony for freed slaves and provided protection to them from renslavement. They 'encouraged' African rulers to stop enslaving minorities to trade as slaves. They ended the Arab Slave trade (which had lasted 1000+ years and has restarted again) They along with Portugal the USA and several other European Nations in the Med ended the Barbary Slave trade. They Ended the Indian Slave trade. They destroyed the Thuggee who were responsible for over 2 million murders in India. They are the reason India is a united nation rather than fractured like Europe is with multiple nations etc. And lastly but definitely not least they encouraged other European powers to abandon slavery often by force and by disrupting trade of slaves as previously mentioned. If any nation in the history of the world has don't more to ends slavery it's Britain.
The purpose of removing Afrikaans from the university is because of several valid reasons: • Textbooks are written in English not in Afrikaans . • English is the main medium of instruction in media and government. • English is universally spoken so it's an incentive for all learners to study in English and thus have opportunities across the globe. • Edit ( Afrikaans can be understood by Dutch speakers and vice versa. But the Dutch language is not global and nor is it anywhere near being the most spoken language in the world.) • Number of people speaking Dutch - About 17-18 million • Number of people speaking English - About 983 million and it is a global language.
@@dirmanbw336 Yes it is a modified form of Dutch. Dutch speakers can mostly understand Afrikaans. But then again Dutch is only spoken by about 17-18 million people. It's no nowhere near being the most spoken language and it's not a global language. English is spoken by 983 million, (almost a billion) and is a global language. How can you force a university to teach in a language that has such a tiny demand? Is that not going to harm the prospects of students?
These guys from the Economic something revolution are ridiculous. Why would any of the SA languages disappear? Resentment isn't a good way to govern, and asking a part of SA to vanish is unacceptable.

As a native Dutch speaker I can assure you Afrikaans isn't Dutch at all. It is only spoken in South Africa.
+shesBlessed83 happy you aren't racist. No one knows exactly where the European languages are coming from. They are called Indo-European languages because they are related to languages spoken in India and elsewhere in Asia. But I don't see the point. It doesn't matter where they are coming from. South-America speaks Spanish and Portuguese, USA and Canada English and French, Australia and New- Zealand Engish, and many people in South Africa Afrikaans and English. We can't undo history. We have to see to what is now and go further from here.

Here in The Netherlands, most Bachelors are in Dutch, but almost all Masters are taught in English only. German students, who make up around 20% of the total number of students at my university, hapily take the compulsory Dutch language course and most of them can speak Dutch fluently after a few months. It kind of makes sense that the Masters are in English because of international competitance. Though the level of English in the classes given isn't always the best... I think the Afrikaners have a right to have their classes taught in Afrikaans, at least for the bachelor degrees at historically "Afrikaans" universities like Stellenbosch.
YtheMain It still is stupid though to some extent. We teach the Indians, the Chinese and ourselves in broken English while forgetting the fact most of our own students aren't going abroad. Our universities and universities of applied sciences are only focusing on international prestige, not on quality particularly.
You just defied your own logic. In the Netherlands Dutch is the lingua franca. You gave an example that German students learn in Dutch. In South Africa English is the lingua franca. So, why don't Afrikaans students learn in English then or start an Afrikaans only university? Why are they trying to impose their language on everyone in a university that everyone attends?
Germans and Dutch can understand each other very well, if you speak clearly. North German (Plattdütsch) is very similar to dutch. Atleast for me its not very hard to understand dutch.
YES, it's fine that they are given the right to do so, but the problem lies with fact that, now students that are not Afrikaans are being forced to be taught in English and Afrikaans only. We can't be taught in our home language and the ones that do, are usually not up to par in terms of school facilities and much so. So basically most schools owned by the government which aren't in the townships only offer to teach in English or Afrikaans, and the Afrikaans learners have the advantage of being taught literally every subject in their home language , whereas we'd have to learn English first then get taught in English at the same time, being forced to learn Afrikaans. I don't think that's fair enough for us black learners, but I'm also not suggesting the removal of another language for the benefit of others.
Protesting Afrikaans because of the Afrikaners were the ones who created apartheid but speaking english, the language of the people who oppressed every group of people, especially the Afrikaners. Sounds about right

Teaching in all national languages is a bit more nuanced than people in the comments make it seem. (I haven't seen the national budget allocation, tax rates, mean salary rates, employment and education stats, etc.. so I might be wrong. Give me some sources if that is the case.) (Before I start you should know that there are 11 official languages in SA) For all languages to be taught in universities while maintaining a decent quality of education, there needs to be 11 qualified lecturers that are willing to work at the salary proposed for each field. Then you would have to multiply that amount by whatever the required student-teacher ratio at the school is. Not sure how many universities there are in SA but I assume it's at least over 20, considering its size, population and it's 3rd world status. (The amount is definitely not below 20 but I wouldn't be suprised if it exceeds 25) You would need 11≤ qualified people for each field per school. There would also need to be an acceptable salary for these lecturers to remain satisfied and new, adequately-equipped classrooms per additional teacher to enable efficient teaching and comfortable schedules for teachers and students. The government would be obligated to support schools in completing this initiative and national funds would have to be reallocated. The reallocation could be pretty harmful to other sectors of the economy and in order to minimize damage, the government would have to increase taxes to control the effects of reallocation. It would also cause the current mean salary for university lecturers to drop due to the fact that budget allocation has to be changed in order to cater to the increased amount of teachers in a school. (They would be paying 11≤ different teachers for each field instead of (+/-) 1≤X
To anyone that sees the reply. In the case that the government doesn't increase taxes, it would take a loan and we all know how great foreign debt is for African countries. Edit: It isn't great for those that don't know

English is the hardest language to learn as a second language statistically. I had trouble myself when learning English when I was a young adult living in apartheid Johannesburg, my first language was and kinda still is Afrikaans. I am not an Afrikaner though, I am of Deutsche Kamerun and French Côte D’ivoire decent and was born in Yaoundé and yes I’m white (my dad was full white and my mom was light skinned). I was never taught French as a kid because my parents thought it would go against social customs, so we went to Rhodesia and I learned Afrikaans instead. After Rhodesia fell, we went to Johannesburg. If the students want to keep their Afrikaans, let them keep their Afrikaans.
In my opinion English is the easiest language to learn. I speak 6 languages and I learned English within 6 months or less. English is also the dumbest language.
English is not that hard, you just need to be around people that speak it and practice everyday and you can learn to speak fluently in at least a year. This goes for every language in the world, if you practice daily you will learn it fast.
Please don't put phrases or quotes about the importance of learning many languages without the whole context. Exactly! I think they have been fooled by powerful people making a play for their country. Guys chill out please. both Arabic and Berber are official languages in Algeria, I'm Berber, i speak Berber which is my native language also i speak Arabic French and English and maybe, i m gonna learn spanish next year, languages are the most beautiful thing in this world we should learn them and love each other's language so that, we can understand eachother. we're partners in this country and god knows how much we love Algeria so "AFOUS DEG AFOUS" (hand by hand) let's make our Country/Watan/Tamourth/Patrie great again.
From reading the comments I think what's going on is that sa is using a minority language to teach instead of using a language everyone speaks which is English
I agree they should teach in Afrikaans.... but also in ALL the Official languages in SA LOL Lets keep it real people, English is the most common language over there
Joan Salas i agree, because majority of South Africans can speak Zulu. But mainly English should be the only language used in universities because its a universal language and we all have our mother tongue but the language brings us together and exposes us to global opportunities.
@@brknsh6689 Blacks weren't allowed to speak their languages or English and had to speak Afrikaans instead? Is that why the blacks today have a widespread understanding of Afrikaans and cannot speak their own languages or English? This is a fact?
Maybe we can swap African brothers in Europe for European settlers in S.A.(it would settle racial problems.)? The Arabs are a different problem I don't care about.
Damn, when it comes to education, you should just use the language that most people use and are most fluent in. Don’t weigh in other stuff like race and pre-colonial stuff it’s inefficient and often leads to bias. When it comes to these things, its best to be logical, heck, when it comes to everything just be logical.
The most logical thing to do is to remove Afrikaans as the medium of instruction at UP, to EQUALLY accommodate every student. Why should Afrikaans be the medium of instruction instead of one the other 9 languages? It would be impossible to incorporate all 11 languages as the medium of instruction, so one common language like English is best suitable language.
Fucking Guillermo I want to die Avendaño no if a black person born in Europe said this was his land because he’s born there you would laugh so keep the same energy
@@Србомбоница86 lol i was waiting for this fake excuse, it’s still because of colonialism, and let’s not pretend Ukraine don’t take advantage of neocolonization please
@@bustereagal3570 No one is trying to oppress anybody. White Afrikaners are allowed to learn in their mother tongue at this university and black people are not we have to learn in English which is simply an unfair advantage. They are protesting that English be the only medium so everyone is on a level playing field.
@N.majola It's Just A Nickname Am A Black Hamitic African Man From Eritrea In East Africa From A Tribe Called Assawurta & We Have Worst Problems Than You Guys ...
I fully support these students who have every right to be taught in there native language of Afrikaans , as the teaching language of there university , after all SA main language is Afrikaans ....... Cheers from a Rhodie , born in Wankie , raised in Bulawayo aka "The City of Kings" , Matabeleland , Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) .
It's not their native land they should go back to their native land and then fight for the right to be thought in their native tongue. Afrikaans is not native it is a made up shit ass languages. It does not belong to any nation just the invaders in my land.
South africa please don't learn stupidity from other countries like the USA. It's time for you to accept your diversity in languages, race, religion and embraced. Tine to move on.
My only problem with Afrikaans is that in the Western Cape and a majority of schools in SA we are forced to learn Afrikaans rather then it being our choice to learn it.
What piece of garbage! You are forced??? The Lingua Franca of the Western Cape is AFRIKAANS. Why did you go to the Western Cape in the first place? Now the people of the Western Cape should change just because YOU said so???
@@ic3c0ld_w3bb2 What is wrong with me?? "In the Western Cape and a majority of schools in SA we are FORCED to learn Afrikaans." And you want to know what's wrong with me?? Many people really don't get it. It's not about the insitutions that existed for a long time which are necessary that's the problem but the ANC goverment who couldn't (read: incompetence) establish the institutions that WERE/ARE NOT THERE YET. So today people attack Afrikaans (a language) and people. Buildings. Institutions for them not having the things they are suppose to HAVE had. If you go to that Afrikaans school who you (perhaps) admire and you feel there's nothing else, stop thinking with a mindset that you are forced to learn Afrikaans. Start seeing the reality and the truth. Go attack the people that were supposeto create and establish more and different schools, more universities, more power stations ETC . . . They divert the attention away from themselves. Now everybody else need to be "fine" when propaganda does the rounds that people are "FORCED to learn Afrikaans" but at the end of the day it actually came down to incompetence and corruption. So next time don't ask me what's wrong with me when you REDIRECT the Government's RESPONSIBILITY TO GOVERN AND PLAN to the people of the Afrikaans language which is the Afrikaner and the Coloured. You blame it on me?? I am to be a joint punchbag anlongside all of the other people for the sake of a tweegevreet incompetent government? 😡😡😡😡😡😡
@@jasonjumat5070 a majority of kids dislike Afrikaans anyway and never speak it,it should be a choice.Nobody really cares for the language since you only use it in South Africa,There is a lot of diversity at my school and the kids who struggle speak Afrikaans are failed
@@jasonjumat5070 Because we are forced to.If you really wanna see how many people really care about Afrikaans then make it a choice and see how many kids show up for classes.
I'm Afrikaans but I say Tertiary level only need one language and it should be English. By Tertiary level EVERY South African should be able to know English and their home language. The business world is mainly English so what is the point of studying in Afrikaans or any other language for that matter? You should be able to learn in your language while in primary school and high school. But at Tertiary level if you do not understand English you should go back to school. I studied 5 years in full English and while my English aren't top notch who am I to complain? Afrikaans will NEVER die regardless of where we use it. Remember Afrikaans aren't a white thing. More coloured (mixed race) people speak Afrikaans than white people
Look at how many likes your comment has. Then look at how many likes opposing comments have. The English orthography is inconsistent in many respects and quite confusing for non-native speakers, and English itself is a bland lingua franca. It’s boring and even native speakers of it have trouble spelling certain words properly, having to rely on knowledge of spelling words that sound similar to attempt and fail at how to spell words like would’ve, could’ve etc. Not to mention the mutations and silent letters are inconsistent… As summarised in 3 words: Cough Though, Thought. I may be fluent in English but I would rather not have been. I only learnt this God-forsaken tongue because I live in England. There’s a good reason our fathers in South Africa (at the time called the Natalia Republic) called it the tongue of the Antichrist. Especially fitting with how many English speakers are turning from Christianity to atheism and acting spitefully towards Christianity every single day.
1:19 if you don’t want to use anything pre apartheid tear down all the infrastructure they built as well. Also English is a colonial language in South Africa as well. So take that out too.
How about you let people live where they choose. Anyone with a single brain cell would call someone who wants to keep non-white people out of Europe a racist. It goes both ways.
@@erjoncaushi4575 they are already here and have been living here for a very long time..same as black people in Europe and America..so why chase people out of their birth country?
@rl184 So by that logic, all the Bantu speakers should be kicked out. Maybe even the Xhosa. Dude, tell me who is not an invader, or mixed with an invader? Seriously, the descendants of Afrikaners have been in the Cape area longer than some Zulus have been in areas that they took over. I'm not trying to excuse apartheid, that was horrible, so we must not repeat the horrible practices of others.
@rl184 Of course the assholism in those groups was severe, but times and people have changed and there is a lot more inclusion and integration now. You should build on it instead, rather than add fuel to the fire. If anyone's proposal is to start a race war based on xenophobic perceptions of what they perceive as the other, it will bring neither peace nor justice.
They ruled the world but in a democratic way. They brought democracy, freedom and civil rights. Afrikaners were basically Nazi-friendly, and apartheid was a form an Afrikaner Nazism. The Brits were not totally perfect, but they have been the liberators of the developing world.
Yes but today when you think of english its associated with internationality ,whereas when you think of afrikaans you think of the language priviliged racist white people spoke during apartheid.
+Kah Weng Chok It's different still Nazis killed jews because of a party German is not synonim of Nazi. I 'm not saying Afrikaans is evil, but to understand the things that southafricans brought this it' s important understand more the apartheid. Then maybe we can understand the context.
The apartheid was the culmination of hundreds of years of white supremacist ideology. Sure, Afrikaans might be a symbol of that unjust system, but in the end, the language itself is neutral, it was the mentality of the people that matters. Just like how Bernie and Trump shares the same language, but the ideology they represent is vastly different. Can you really say English language is the problem here?
1:14 my guy...so what if we are in a democratic state? I get it that apartheid was a crisis but you can't remove a language, literally people still speak it as their native language and also why not add more languages than to just remove it? Like seriously 🤦🏾♀️ protest to add Zulu or something not to remove Afrikaans, you're just going to offend the people who speak afrikaans and cause chaos and I think that's one of the problems we are facing in South Africa, we are still carrying the grudge of apartheid from generation to generation. Being innovative is a lacking skill that is needed :(
It is so sad what goes on in the southern africa region in general. I mean theres apartheid scars in south africa, zimbabwe suffers economy issues and scars of rhodesia, namibia suffers with corruption and poverty, zambia is slowly becoming a chinese colony. Botswana seems to be the only hopeful place without these tensions
That’s so stupid. There are still way more official languages in SA that people speak. If you keep university in Afrikaans that’s disadvantaged many students. If you add More languages it’s a waste of resources.
Wisest comment here - this logic of advocating for equality by taking away advantages instead of bringing those advantages to others. Instead of uplifting the poor, we want to punish the rich. The mindset of "I can't have it, so nobody else should" is ridiculous. If we want equality, should we all have 2 homes and 3 cars, or should we all live on the street? Afrikaners (and British) being able to study in their own language is a problem, but the way to fix it is not to take that benefit away, but rather give the same benefit to others. I've seen schools in the MENA region teach in English, French, Spanish, German, Hindi, Chinese, etc. while the official language is usually Arabic. Many European schools teach 3-5 languages!
