We asked students with intellectual disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, what some of their favorite things about UCF are and how they got in. It's pretty amazing when you hear their responses.
Here at UCF, we have an Inclusive Education Services program, a three-year postsecondary experience offering students with intellectual disabilities an inclusive college opportunity with a vocational focus.

The worse is not being able to get into a college because of a mental disability, my own story. I was basically aided through highschool in order to get a diploma, so when I got out, my understanding of mathematics was still 6th grade level. 😩. A person lives a totally different struggle than others because of this disability. Not many opportunities.

@@suaypordulu6056 Most of my childhood and teen years was taken up by special ed courses, since I was born with tinnitus, and couldn't comprehend human speech until about age 5, after a surgery. I took speech therapy and disabled school from age 5-6, then had to take special ed once again from 7th grade-to high school graduation, because of limited reasoning skills. My diploma was actually handed out to me, and I didn't really earn it, always had aid to finish tests. I did take iq sessions and they did find I had horrible problem solving skills.

@@bahfah107 Same , I was born with a intellectual disability and adhd. It's been hard for me every since elementary but started to get really bad once I started middle school. Because I started to become anti social because I was ashamed of my illness and adhd causes me to have short term memory loss. So everyday I struggle with social anxiety even though I love talking to people I don't like being forced to talk to large groups of people or even just one person. Yeah... the short term memory loss problem is what really is fucking me because I forgot almost everything I learned back in school and sometimes feel like I can't even start a simple conversation and keep it going. Even though I stopped giving af what people think about me a long time ago I still don't tell people about why I have anxiety and most people are surprised when I do because I don't have it as bad. Anyway I hope everything gets better for you and is getting better🙏.

@@suaypordulu6056 No I never took a iq test but basically back in elementary school they started to put me in special ed classes and I was too embarrassed to tell anyone and also wanted to be treated like everyone else like no one even knew. Because in those classes I didn't really like the way the teachers talked to the kids in there and what I mean is when people know that you're disabled they talked to you in a certain manner like a baby almost. I didn't like it that much to the point that I wouldn't ask for help from any of the teachers even if I did need help. I used to sneak to my classes and used to lie to people that saw me in there. Also everyday I struggle with remembering things a lot because of my ADHD I'm pretty sure. Can't even focus in a conversation half the time and forget almost everything that someone tells me. That's why I forgot almost everything back in school and every now and then I'll get depressed about my problem. But also start to realize that I'm kind of lucky than most of those kids that have it way worst out there and feel bad for them. I try to distract myself from my problems by doing some of my favorite hobbies like playing video games and sketching portraits. Till this day I like to keep my disability under the radar by not speaking about it to any of my friends and even still embarrassed to ask questions in class because I don't won't to look stupid even though you shouldn't give af.

I was in this program to well not the same state but in the college that I went to it wasn't even a college all we ever did was volunteering doing helping the homeless people doing food banks they didn't actually help us prepare us after college I mean all we ever did but just talk and went to bus Buddies and do so many stuff they actually didn't help us all how to social with people my opinion I felt like I was in special education again but this time in a college. They never teach us anything all we ever did was basic work they actually never told us that we were graduating with a regular diploma we never got a regular diploma all we got was a certificate and a shake hand from the president of the college that I went to it was so boring I didn't actually made no friends at all and after 2 we want allowed back to the college we want we want allowed back in the college after 2 p.m. after we graduate we can come back here until this day I don't know why we're not allowed to go back but it took me years just to find me a job and now I'm working a job but my social problem is terrible they never ask about teachers anything yeah we will go there at 10 in the morning come back home at 3 * 30 and they never taught us anything don't get me wrong it's a good program but I felt so embarrassed because I have been seeing member so many people in the community that I know they would follow us around these teachers they never taught us anything it's a good program and so many state should have this but I wish they taught us what we want to know like all the regular students we will take college class but an aid have to be with us but it doesn't matter if we failed or pass because we weren't getting graded basically it was the same class as special education but this time it took place in the community college and they make you sit with all the disabled people at lunch time you're not alone to be honest I didn't make no friends at all and I joined bus buddies and no one from that program actually talk to me

I went to a state college community year ago. The first thing they make me do is a test to see what level of education I am at. I meet with the college counselor the same day. The counselor did not recommend me to go to college because it is very difficult. I told I did care it was hard or not. It took me four and half years to get my Associate degree in Digital media (60 credits). The first two years was difficult because I have started lowest English (English 9) in college. In the first semester I took 12 credits( 4 course )and I failed. I pass two failed two that not good. The counselor recommended me to do part-time instead of full-time because it will be easier for to handle the course load. For the degrees they have this requirement of 60 credits for degrees. The lower level ( below 100 number )doesn't count towards the degree. At the final years I got like 70 to 80 credits.

Hey Ryan sorry for the late response i didn't see this comment and i was on Vacation haha. But wow that's incredible your IQ is now at 100? That proves it is possible that anybody with an intellectual disability can go from the 60s iq range to 100 iq or higher. So the condition 'basically' or pretty much can be outgrown or "gradually curable" as i like to say it. 86-100+ iq range is good enough for abstract thinking (the complex thinking people use for analysing, arguments lol, problem solving, reasoning, planning etc.). This is great to know. And what your saying is true too, in fact for more proof, these post-secondary students who have had I.D. are smart enough to be in University. Anybody can improvingly change and that's what i like to hear

So, all social benefits for them? No educational or learning experiences talked about by these students. The kids with mild disabilities - also positive social experience and no mention about studies. Ask (and videotape) them again when classes are in full swing and see what they have to say. How many of these kids will actually graduate and find employment? What are your statistics? What classes are they enrolled in?
