Using the smick.co.uk 120cm octagonal softbox Gavin Hoey shows how by just using this one softbox and a 400Ws studio flash head, a 300Ws would do the same, for his studio lighting setup to produce some quality portraits.
Live action show shows how Gavin uses several different lighting setups and shows you just how to produce quality results in a simple to understand way.
This softbox has been upgraded to include a grid
Strobe Softbox small softbox used to illuminate the face.

Tutorials like this are great. Just like 'unboxing' and 'review' videos, these give people priceless knowledge before buying a product. There's so much stuff to buy for photography, not enough examples of using them! Thanks.

I just wanted to say that these Videos are probably the most informative and useful videos I have seen. Its fantastic to see you demonstrating the products that you sell, and after looking at your website shop, I can see that you are very reasonably priced too. I am saving to buy some equipment and think I may have just found my vendor! :-) Thanks Sie

Hi Lindsey, Gavin is using as you say a "trigger" system, that means usually a "transmitter" and a "receiver" (or as many receivers as lights you want to fire) The transmitter is attached to the hot shoe of your camera, while the receivers will be attached to the lights.. if they are studio strobes, they are that little box thats hanging from the strobe, in gavin´s light, and attached via cable from box to lamp). for use with speedlights, make sure they have a shoe. check ebay ;)

This was a very good video, I liked using the soft box as a back drop and his information on what stop he metered at. I am thinking of trying this. The background paper looks to be about 9 feet or so.

@SuperMangn The video was to show the use of a large softbox to take portraits and not to do with starting a business. Most people would be enthusiasts wanting to learn about studio lighting techniques.

Mr. Hoey is an excellent teacher, it is almost as if a good friend is just sharing information and his experience with you! And the equipment demoed in videos is an excellent way to spark inspiration and sales too! I would like to know how much light loss there is through both diffusers. I'm thinking about using continuous lighting heads since strobes can startle little children and distress (scare the life out of...) animals.

That's right. One of the main purposes for shooting raw, is to do some tweaking and adjusting in Photoshop's Camera Raw and/or Photoshop itself, there's other options but I believe these are the most popular ones.

I second that, the extension in-front of the barrel gives it away, pretty sure it is the 24-105.
@smickphoto
@smickphoto 12 лет назад
Gavin uses a Canon MKII and 24 - 105 lens and it is a wireless trigger attached to the hot shoe.
@smickphoto
@smickphoto 12 лет назад
@gnarr I am not sure what Gavins meter is but think it only has the standard F stops and what he was saying was that f11.9 was just .1 away from the next f stop which is f16. So f16 is a full stop difference to f11 and not f19

@fotophotoivybridge Pretty sure the soft box is the flash. They usually have a constant light (as you can see) and a strobe/flash that is triggered wirelessly from the thingy on top of his camera when he takes a shot.

Hi thank you for the video. Just one thing I want to comment on: when you're metering for your exposure, I think you should point the light meter toward the camera ( of the direction where you'll shoot from) that's because the sphere calculates how the light falls (on a 3D object; like the sphere). I'd only point my light meter toward my lights to measure them separately (with the dome down) :). Thank you.
@stanrogers5613
@stanrogers5613 3 года назад
That averages in the shadows, which is something you rarely want to do. It makes a certain basic sense in, say, outdoor lighting where you're looking for an average exposure and letting the highlights and shadows go wherever they may, but in studio you'd actually want to control the brightest parts of what you're lighting - so having half your dome in shadow lets your meter lie to you.

@smickphoto
@smickphoto 13 лет назад
@baymagic You need to set your shutter speed at the camera sync speed probably 125th and then just alter the aperture to get the correct exposure or buy a flash meter.
@podvorac
@podvorac 12 лет назад
Very fine Videos - very infor. and not boring like many others. ++
@smickphoto
@smickphoto 12 лет назад
@Cloud797 You don't need a meter you can check the histogram on your camera to get correct exposure.
@smickphoto
@smickphoto 12 лет назад
The shutter speed would be the flash sync speed of the camera typically 1/125th 1/200th

@moxymagic You set the background to 1 - 2 stops brighter than that of the subject, which is what makes it over exposed. It's not recommended to go any higher as you may then start getting spill light from the background affecting the subject

@simonsgl
@simonsgl 12 лет назад
@fotophotoivybridge I'm not sure he answered your question very well there! The light he uses has what is called a "modelling light" built in to it. This is switched on all the time so you can see the effect the light source is going to have on your subject but it is not strong enough to take the picture with. When he takes the picture, the main flash bulb fires and thats the one that actually lights the subject for the photograph. Hope that is of help!

@cyman1964uk You take a reading of the light falling on the subject so that why the meter is pointed towards the light.
@ZidokTV
@ZidokTV 12 лет назад
well, checked the video again, it seems that "his" little box hanging from the strobe is like a power inverter or some sort of that to connect to the power outlet on the wall. There are different strobes, and different systems of triggering them, some internal, some external, etc.. but to fire your speedlights, go to ebay and search for this (copy and paste) PT-04 4-CH Hot Shoe Flashgun Trigger Transmitter +2 Receivers for Canon Nikon those seem ok, and cheap! Have fun!

@iamcaryballard Yes they have had some processing it inevitable if you shoot RAW as Gavin does.
@smickphoto
@smickphoto 12 лет назад
@cyman1964uk Gavin wanted to get the exposure correct on the side of the face, if the meter reading was taken from the front then it would have given a reading to expose for the face and this would have resulted in the side of the face being overexposed.

@brandy1000sissy because the strobe has a flash light as well as normal lighting bulb so every time you take a photo the strobe's flash light bulb will flash and then it have to recharge itself. That is why the strobe will stop lighting for a few second so if you want to use it for video you wont need to use the flash and the strobe doesn't need to recharge itself but it will just give you a continue of light. So yes you can use it to make a video or even us it as normal household lighting.

@00Captain You will find Gavin over at the youtube channel PhotoGavin For what you want to do flash is the best option. To get started choose a single head flash kit with softbox and a reflector you could also use you flash gun with this by using the flash from your flash gun to trigger the studio flash via its photocell.
