There’s that proof. Funk is all in the dynamics. Energy is not shown through volume, but dynamics and rhythm.

the universe works well, haha... i just come from a marcus miller power hard slapping bass session and i thought: it´s impressive, but somehow strainy to watch and listen to - it makes me sad, when music is all about power and being "better than so and so" and then i switched to this sweet humble session and read your very words - yesssss... btw. i have been playing reggae for a long time and there the musicians don´t play much, but they play in a sort of jigsaw puzzle in which the single parts don´t make much sense, but put together in the right order they make a beautiful picture... :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O57iHKsRPJI.html another btw. in my young days i used to dance like crazy to the original of this song here whenever they played it at our local disco, haha, sweet memories... :-) thank you my friend, love and greetings from germany

@@bigkahuna5445 hey bro, i´ve been into reggae music since i saw bob marley live in 78 (brag around, haha) - what i want to say: i had heard him on the radio before and, yes, i liked him somehow, but i was not prepaired to watch him and his band, plus the i-threes in person from some 20 meters on an open air, it literally shocked me... :-) i am a musician myself - i had started with blues rock in the early 70s and went into slightly jazzy, spacy stuff during the 70s - it was then mostly about brilliant virtuosity a.s.o. - reggae taught me something different: humbleness! every single musician plays a little part and all that fits together like a jigsaw puzzle - the same goes for funk or african music - here in germany we were lucky to have a wave of african music, bands that came over here to perform and i saw many of them and was never disapointed - the nigerian giant king sunny adé had opened a door with his appearance on german tv... this is what i´m looking for since then: inner power, shown through "dynamics and rhythm", like nick says here - that´s why i liked this session here immediately - solid musicanship working together in humbleness... :-) there is a series called tiny desk where the musicians appear live in an intimate atmosphere in an office with small audience (hence the title) - i like it a lot, it´s well hosted and recorded - example... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QrR_gm6RqCo.html ah boy, there is so much sweet music out there (and in here, haha) - i love youtube for giving us access worldwide and to share our love for that - one love as bob marley once put it! greetings from germany

Love the discipline and restraint of Roy 'Futureman' Wooten on the drums, and Victor Wooten on bass. They have the chops to go nuts, but instead they keep it inside. It just heightens the tension and keeps things on the edge. Me with my ugly face...
@timcardona9962
@timcardona9962 4 года назад
Why would anybody "go nuts" on a funk tune, especially bass and drums?
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 4 года назад
Tim Cardona Virtuoso musicians tend to overdo it, particularly Victor Wooten. I was very glad to see them all play like reasonable people, it makes for better music.
@papabroly8000
@papabroly8000 4 года назад
@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney That's not necessarily the case. Certain people appreciate different genres and therefore different ways of musical expression. I myself am a technical death metal fan (don't ask how I even ended up here lol), so I appreciate musicians "overdoing it" more so than those that exhibit more laid back playing. It's not objectively "better" music, it's just the majority's favorite play style; I won't pretend I hold the popular opinion or anything, don't worry.
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 4 года назад
Papa Broly Well, fair enough. Fans of the style they just played, however, almost exclusively prefer that the players stay in the pocket and solo to support the song, not to show off blinding speed while not really staying in the groove.
@papabroly8000
@papabroly8000 4 года назад
@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney Yeah, I understand that. I'm always looking for instrumentalists to go off on an unexpected tangent to be perfectly honest. It just mixes things up and thereby makes the song more interesting to me. But I totally see what you mean.

Knowing when to play, and what to play, at the proper time.... is the key. Listen, feel it... communicate with your other players - musically, and visually. It's magic when the pieces of the puzzle come together. Everybody doing their part, tastefully.

Victor Wooten always has this expression of joy on his face when he's playing. I'm working so hard just trying to stay in the pocket and not mess up the notes, when will my face get that automatic smile? When I know I nailed a tune or a lick. That's the work part. But the playing part on stage, that's the smile for me, man
