There are a ton a benefits to implementing some parallel processing in your mix. You have the unprocessed signal add life to the mix, and make it seem like the listener is in the room, but the parallel signal can add all kinds of different elements to your mix.
Inside Studio One, and most other DAW's you can easily achieve this by using sends and buses or FX channels. Studio One, however, has a great built in feature that let's you do parallel processing on a single channel!

Tim this was a very well done video. It's not often I'll subscribe to a channel but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of what you do. I had no idea you could split a channel that way! But not only was the content great - you presented it perfectly. Way to go.

Saved my ass trying to work out how to clone off an instrument track into three channels with the same signal, thanks! Only issue I found was that I seemed to have some phasing issues when I compared this setup to using three separate channels and bouncing the instrument out first.

It seems like you could do a lot of cool things with this....you could split the frequency up several times and have a different effect at each frequency level...interesting.

Couldn’t you just use compression on the kick and snare and get the same effect with parallel?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 года назад
That wouldn’t be parallel processing. That would be processing the channels themselves. Parallel processing requires some kind of copy of the signal somewhere else and blended in. This could be a mix knob, a send to an fx/bus, etc etc.
@ericchristianson7589
@ericchristianson7589 4 года назад
Thank you so much for this, Tim, and your other S1 vids. Terrific stuff. One question: would you recommend the method you used within the track channel here for parallel compression? I imagine it could save having to keep track of different busses and make automating easier? Thanks
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 года назад
It's all about workflow and personal preference! I may use something like this if I was going to do some parallel processing on a bass guitar, but I also use buses for parallel work. It's up to what works best for you!

Question: what you did to the bass (splitting the rout) ... could have done the same thing to the snare and achieved the same result as sending the snare to the FX channel like you did at the beginning of the video? Would I be wrong in assuming that they are essentially two different methods of getting the same thing?
@DelusiUK
@DelusiUK 3 года назад
No because I'm pretty sure the splitter sets the bass into two separate frequency options. Eg, below 300hz, then above 300hz. If you send to an Fx channel you would get the full Freq range.

Thank you Tim After you had set up your bus ( compression chanel) and applied max attack & release, which compressor did you use ? and what were your other compressor settings ?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 года назад
Hey Rock Writer! For this video, I used the FET compressor inside the Fat Channel Plugin, but you can use any compressor. It's a good way to train your ear to hear how different compressors work on signals. A FET compressor will work differently then a VCA compressor/Opto/Vari-Mu, etc.
@rockwriter9054
@rockwriter9054 4 года назад
@@TimTalksAudio Thank you Tim, what are your recommended settings, appart from the full attack & release to achieve the maximum effecf?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 года назад
Rock Writer with “New York” style parallel compression, it’s the fastest attack and the fastest release. Then, since it’s parallel, you can slap the compressor REALLY hard, like 20+dB or gain reduction, and blend it in!
@branimirkruzic9453
@branimirkruzic9453 5 лет назад

@TimTalksAudio

@bachelorgamer8001
@bachelorgamer8001 3 года назад
how did you know which all settings
@retsmej
@retsmej 4 года назад
i came back here to ask if the split in track mode made the gain level 50%-50%, or 100%-100% ? because in bus mode i think the gain level is 100-100 because i noticed the stereo mix is louder and noticeable in bus parallel mode than track splitter mode. tnx
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 года назад
In a parallel bus, if you don't add any processing, you are just doubling the signal, and therefore getting an increase in volume. When using the split, you will not get an increase in volume because you're not creating two outputs of the same signal. The splitter will create two copies of the signal, but at the end of the chain they are combined again to a single output.
@bachelorgamer8001
@bachelorgamer8001 3 года назад
tbh that bus channels are so confusing do we volume match to the fader or set them the dame as the fader and why is it always louder when you open one
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
Hey Bachelor Gamer, what are you confused about with bud channels? If you have channels sent to a bus, and don't want the bus fader to alter the volume, you'll want to set it to 0. Of course, if you want to turn everything going to the bus down, just lower the fader, or turn it up to turn things up! When using a bus for parallel processing, you'll want to start with the bus fader down, and bring it up to blend it in as desired.

I dont't hear any difference, nothing ! Bypass/on ???? You should have chosen other music examples. Ha,ha,ha... what do you hear ? Nothing ! The snare sound is exactly the same. And it would have been find if you could explane what you say is a " parallel channel " ???
