I was quite depressed these days but after watching your vlog, I feel much better:) Last year, I was preparing for my Korean SAT and since Korea is crazy about the university levels and only cares about grades, I was frustrated. My mental issues were serious than ever, and I cried every night sitting on the empty bus stop on my way home. It was a hard journey. Even the things I loved couldn't make me happier any longer. I just studied, cried, and didn't take care of my body and health. At that time with a RU-vid algorithm, I saw your videos and soon became obsessed with them! Watching your videos helped me a lot. Now I am a university student. I got into one of the greatest universities in Korea, and I'm so proud of it. Your artwork, videos, and your words helped me a lot, Malin! Thank you so much:) I am also so proud that we Asian girls are standing strong! I love you so much and I can't wait to join your Patreon and buy your stuff from your shop as soon as you do international shipping! (Yup that's right. I'm the girl who asked for shipping to Korea and other Asian countries haha) I hope you can read my comment, Malin! + one more thing! I thought it would be cool if you can have a video about Korean stationaries or other things you are interested in! I can help you get some:) If you need anything from Korea, plz contact me with IG! My account is @harinalicepark I'd love to see more Asian things, cultures, etc featured in your vids. And I think you would love Korean stuff as well! I love you so much, Malin!
Hi Ali, I'm so sorry you've been having a rough time :< I remember your comment! I'm so glad that my videos were able to bring you comfort, and btw, my shop will start shipping to Asia in April ! Thank you for your comment and for offering to help with stationary, you're so kind
the bts instrumental while reading "this is a safe space" made me tear up omg. i not only love your vlogs and art, but the space and community you have created 🤍
as someone who is from sweden i cannot relate to your struggles of not being represented and teased because of your skin colour, but it makes me very happy to know that watching Raya made you feel seen. i can't imagine what it would be like constantly being alienated and i hope more animation studios decide to be more inclusive with their work, because it makes so many people feel appreciated and heard. i wish you all the best
This might be weird... but your words about how colorism had impacted you made me want to give you a hug. You are a beautiful soul, make wonderful art, and have created this meaningful community around you. Your worth should not matter based on the color of your skin.
sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot the login password. I love any tips you can give me!
Hi malin! Please dont feel discouraged by the red arrows!! You have viewers who love and enjoy watching your videos!! It makes our day more happy and productive!! I personally, enjoy your content. It will take time but i promise you, you will get to where you want to!! 🥺💖
hey malin, your videos are so inspiring to me and everyone else who watches your videos! I am Vietnamese American and when you talked about people judging you for dark skin, I understood you. I love that Raya is Asian and she has dark skin. She’s such a good example for people who feel bad about themselves for having a certain skin color, or hair color or anything else they feel insecure about. She’s teaching people to be proud for who you are no matter what anybody else thinks. Hearing you talk about the experiences you went through as a kid and a young adult, really inspired me! Again, you are so so so inspiring to me and a lot of other people and I’m so glad to have found you.
Watching Raya with my family was amazing. My parents enjoyed it so much seeing a lot of the representation of Southeast Asian Culture. I'm Hmong and we aren't known as much and always mistaken as other Asian ethnics. When we saw the people of Talon we noticed some of the colors and patterns represent so much of Hmong embroidery. It was beautiful. I love the movie so much, showing so much of the culture and food that many Southeast Asians share as well. The congee looks so good too! XD
Just woke up from nightmares (5am where i am). I've been having them a lot recently. Your videos help calm me down. I absolutely adore you and your content!
As a Filipina, seeing Raya was so impactful to me. I’m so far from a mestiza and growing up my family would try to lighten my skin because I would get to be as dark as walnut wood stain. Thanks for talking about this :’)
Loved this vlog. How you felt about Raya is the way I felt as a black African woman about Princess and the Frog and Black Panther. Representation DOES matter and I'm so happy that you and many others are starting to feel seen 🤗 such an amazing feeling. Keep being as inspirational as you are, Malin!
I'm so sorry you had to go through all that. You are beautiful and stunning. Your features, your skin color and hair are so gorgeous and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. All you said about how the movie made you fell was so bittersweet. On one hand it's amazing that you see the representation you need and what little girls need too yet on the other hand, you shouldn't have to in the first place. I just came across this vlog and your channel for the first time but I already love it here. You are so sweet and kind-hearted and I can just feel it from the beginning. I can't wait to see what other videos you create❤️
This is why I love your videos so calm and peaceful yet very interesting with the art and the topics you choose to talk about like the having Raya being there for south Asians representation and they included the skin tone features and the culture very well.
I'm so glad this movie helped you be comfortable being you. I've had problems all my life because of my skin color, I'm either too light or too dark depending on how dark or light the other person is. I was bullied too in school. Skin is just skin and it's color doesn't matter.❤️
you are my FAVORITE!!!!!!! hearing you speak about how raya was so special to you made me so emotional. there's so much more visibility for east asian people and its really upsetting how south asian and south east asian people are often excluded from exposure/narratives/and representation. i'm so happy raya EXISTS and i can't wait to watch and boost it so we can get more stories like this on the big screens :')
so true! it's important to recognize all the cultures of Asia (there's so many of us!) I can't wait for you to see Raya hehe you're always welcomed to come fangirl with me :D
I looooooved raya and the last dragon! I’m so glad it was true to your culture and the fact that you experienced hate based on your skin color makes me sick. I hope you remember you’re unbelievably beautiful in the skin that you wear today! 💕💕💕
I love that u r so honest and open! I'm now a new subscriber due to ur bravery of baring yourself to all your viewers. You r beautiful never let anyone tell you different!!❤
You talking so passionately about Raya made me tear up. I was eating lunch and I wasn't expecting to cry, but I could see how much this film means to you, and it was so heart-warming. I have a friend who is obsessed with the movie, I definitely have to watch it now!! Also, the capybara drawing made my day.
First, you are very beautiful with or without makeup! I'm 41 years old and I hate wearing makeup! I can't wait to see Raya! I absolutely loved Moana because she was not a typical Disney princess (I've always loved Disney but have been a "tom boy" my whole life) so seeing that they are in a way representing that not every little girl is like Cinderella is great! I just love your content and am always cheering for you! :)
Im of malay and chinese descent from malaysia and watching you mentioning malaysia made me happy. As of the raya movie, i've yet to see representation from malay culture (SEA culture is so diverse but somehow malay gets leftout). They could point out that malay language was once a universal language but no, not important enough i guess. I have fair skin because of my father's side (chinese) and ever since childhood i never had the problem with skin colour. Only when im with my internet friends from US and england (non-asian) do i have the trouble for my looks. They assumed i was a filipino. We all know malay + filipino history back then but again people from other countries aren't aware of malays. It upsets me because malay is a race not a nationality and to be assumed of a something that im not because "i look like one" doesn't mean im one. Im glad that you speak of this because most american asian artists that i subscribe to don't really talk about this.
all cultures are important and all skin tones are beautiful! I heard that the name "raya" is malaysian, but im not sure too. please let me know if this is correct!
Seeing your vlogs makes me so eager to open my own online shop and try selling prints and stickers of my work ❤️Thank you so much for shaing these, I love what you are doing, and I hope to be able to support you better one day !
I get what Malin is saying I was born in Mexico and lighter skin color is still seen as better. Anyway, I hope in the future people will become more open minded to appreciate others different skin colors and characteristics.
This makes me feel more comfortable in my skin, I'll be honest... because of the media, growing up I always thought I was ugly because I wasnt Japanese or korean looking, I was never that light skinned asian girl and I always avoided the sun... however now more than ever, I am proud to be thai and love my culture, I love our food, our dresses, our markets and I love our skin colour. I finally love my self as a thai person💕
I just stumbled upon this video and I'm so glad I decided to watch. It's very relaxing to watch and listen. I really love your designs! They're so cute 💕 I'm still watching this video but I really love your music choices: Life Goes On and Blue Hour piano versions. I love both songs especially the piano versions
I haven't seen Raya yet but I loved hearing your thoughts! I'm happy that we're starting to see more SEA representation and I hope we will see more of it. Colorism is a huge problem in south asia as well (left over from colonial times) and skin bleaching is such a big issue. :( I'm on the lighter side of the spectrum but I'd get teased for having dark skin after a summer tan, and I remember one time a cometic stand lady pressuring me to buy a lightening product because of how I look!! I Love that Raya is a darker skinned asian and hope that we see more of it and that our cultures normalize that all shades are beautiful!
yes!! in thailand, the media favors lighter skin people and worships people with eurocentric features. I'm sad to know that there is a lot of this around the world, but I am keeping hope that things will start to change for the better soon. Thank you for sharing your experience, Anoosha! please know you are beautiful just the way you are ! :D
Keep being you Malin!! We love you for who YOU are! Make what you wanna make! You are absolutely beautiful and I am so inspired by how driven you are to heal and grow. Your small business is so cute! I hope to become a patreon soon ☺️ keep up the amazing work! We love you!
Thank you so much for sharing your story and history!! I can relate with you because all my life as a mixed hawaiian, japanese, african american.... i have not fit in because i'm either too black or not black at all depending on who's looking at me. It causes a struggle trying to find myself and who i am or what i represent because i don't fit in anywhere. At some point we just have to be happy with who we are and be proud that we have color and that we are different in all kinds of ways!
Omg I’m Thai, ur the first RU-vid that talk about our tan skin color...right now I’m international school and my teacher tell me to take skating and tennis less serious because my skin color from the start till now CHANGES TO MUCH( which makes me very upsetti spaghetti ) but after this vid it helps me a lot lol idk why🦖
omg! why this vlog is sooo timely. i'm sooo sad because of the recent news (asian women shooting) 😭😢 ..but when i watch your vlog, it makes me happy, hearing your words of wisdom, thank you malin! 💜🧡 i'm also looking forward to watch Raya because of the representation of SEA culture + i love Kz (who sung the ost) coz i'm a filipino. 🌻🌼🌸 ..sending virtual hug asian people! 😢😓💚💛💜
Hey Malin! I wanted to know what size your flat mailers are and where you got them? I love the content that you put out and your art is amazing, adorable and inspiring!!
I am so sorry that you have had to experience this utter racism. I can’t wait to watch the movie it looks amazing!! And I hope your having an amazing day your work and channel are so inspiring and cute!!! Keep going!!! Xxx
15:48.... OMG, gurl. You are beautiful just the way you are. I use to hang out with a few Chinese friends and they would be so racist towards dark skin people (I'm from the Caribbean and have dark skin). At some point, I realized these "friends" were detrimental to my self-esteem so I cut them off. I've since ditched anyone who talks about shallow stuff like skin colour or physical appearance. Now my friends are all tech and business people and we all talk about ideas that can change the world. I find this setting much more desirable for personal growth and encourage anyone to surround themselves with people who respect others based on intelligence and kindness and non-superficial things. We all owe it to ourselves to not drink poison and remove toxic people from your lives.
Hi ! I just found your channel and I love what you do ❤️I’m French and it’s so cool to see your videos because it helps me to learn English ✨ So thank you very much 😊 I just have a little question: I saw this little plant in the pot shaped like a Bulbasaur 😍 Where did you found it ?
AAA THIS IS SOO AESTHETIC 🥺🧸 i immediately clicked the video bc the thumbnail is very interesting 🌷 ur packing is sooo neat and cute 🤧‼️ you made this with love giirlll 💗💌 hope we can support each other
สวัสดีค่ะ Hello I am Thai. Living in USA.I know how you feel i felt the same way. But after watching you Vlog feel much better. เป็นตัวของตัวเอง รักตัวเอง. ขอบคุณนะค่ะ Thank you so much
You are very beautiful, inside and out ! It's funny the beauty standard is to have "fair skin" in East and East south Asia, even in my Taiwanese culture, we were taught having tan skin is ugly ...but the good news is : that's so last generation! ppl now appreciate the natural skin color no matter it's tan or fair or black or brown . and i have faith it will get better ! (hugs)
The struggle of finding a foundation the correct color for tan skins is horrible! It's gotten better recently, but it's still so tough. I went through the same racist things. I hope it doesn't hold you back too much these days. You are amazing, and I happen to think tanner/dark skin is just as beautiful as paler skintones.
