I'm going to start my studies in October and will also be taking this module. This was very informative and super interesting. Thank you so much for sharing. 😊
Thank you Dan! I hope that you are keeping well! I am starting my first module the A111 in October and i am really looking forward to it. I have opted to study for two modules so that i am studying full time in order to gain my degree sooner and hopefully within the next three years. I have already registered for the A112 Cultures which starts in February as i would like to follow the English literature, classical studies and creative writing paths
I have done the same! Started on the BA Hons in early childhood, did the first two years and didn't feel like it was me anymore, as I wanted a career change. I had been working with children since I was 18! I switched to psychology and completed my first year, but my passion has always been music for as long as I can remember, so decided to switch to music. I am starting in October and really excited about it. Currently working on my diploma in music theory as a jump start and learning to play piano, I finally feel like I have found the degree that is "me".
I’m like you Dan, I taught science for 30 years but still constantly watch RU-vid videos on history. It’s always fascinated me. Good luck on your courses!
Thank you. I wish I’d got on with the science and maths but I really didn’t enjoy it and fell so behind on level 1 that I decided to stick to what I’m good at 😊
Hey Dan. This was great!! Looking forward to watching your other videos on those modules. I just stumbled over the OU a few days ago and will almost certainly start my studies, either this October or next February. Seems like A111 will be a module I'll be taking in the first year. This video made it an easy choice! So much interesting interdisciplinary subjects, most of which I have genuine interest for. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing and much success in your studies!! - Also, love the unscripted nature of the vid. Well done, not easy to do, but seems to come natural to you. Cheers!
Thanks for such a lovely comment and I’m glad the video was of some use. A111 is a great module no matter what your interest is in humanities, I’m really enjoying philosophy when I didn’t think I would but also the history/classical studies and English side of the module. I’m sure you’re enjoy it if you take it and all the best for your future studies 😊
Thanks Dan Just signed up to start A111 in October. Enjoyed your brief guide as to what's in there and what to expect. Hope the course is going well for you
Thank you and thanks for watching. Going well so far, only two more assignments left of the module and on the whole have really enjoyed it. Good luck with your future studies 😊
I chose the open arts degree as well! Starting this September, part time, and I am just going to take it all as I go. I've always loved history and classical studies, and so far I am thinking I will go for creative writing and history in stage 2 and 3, but we'll see what happens during my first two modules!
Good luck with your studies, I’m sure you’ll love A111. I definitely found I went into the module with a clear idea of what I wanted to study going forward, but found I also really enjoyed subjects I didn’t expect to 😊
Good to see you back, Dan! I am just about to finish LLB law, and have just started (they overlap) MU123 Discovering Maths, towards a maths degree. I was thinking of English Lit, History and Creative Writing, but went with maths. There is so much to do with the OU, like you, I think I am developing a habit! Good luck with A111.
Thank you and good luck with your studies too. I wish I got on with maths and science as it was a great challenge but I really struggled and feel so much more at home with history and humanities
I'm here because I'm currently on a psychology path with the ou but dreaming of studying history. Nice to see others have been in the same position and made the jump!
Best of luck with your studies… that’s the great thing about the OU, you can either switch studies if something else takes your fancy or do what I did and just study another degree after the first 😊
It's nice to see your journey changing paths, good luck with the module! I've switched too, started a health sciences BSc and did the stage 1 modules, but I've moved to an open and I'm focusing more on social sciences now
That’s the great thing about the OU, the flexibility it offers especially if you’re like me and are partial to changing your mind. Best of luck with your studies too 😊
It’s a good module, especially if you enjoy various topics, however I must admit I became a bit despondent with it towards the end and wasn’t enjoying the variety 😊
Hi Dan, really interested to watch some of your study videos. I'm an OU tutor in the arts and have my own study channel. Best of luck with your degree - I hope you are enjoying your studies 😃
Hey thanks for the comment, I hope my videos don’t come across in a way that dumbs down my studies 😆 A111 was a mixed bag for me and I did plateau near the end, but I’m looking forward to starting A112 in February.
Thank you, great info - I did the same started with a psychology degree and couldn't get on with it. I've deferred to study the History degree and I start in January.
Good luck with the course! A111 is a great module with a lot of different aspects, some of which I didn’t think I’d like which I ended up really enjoying 😊
I did the same. Psychology was just not for me. Spent the entire course stressed out too and failed in the end. I have registered for A111 in January and hoping my love of history from my school years returns in the process. Good luck with your studies Debbie!
Hey Dan! So glad I found you, also a Science/Astronomy drop out due to hard math 🙈 still maybe lying to myself that I may go back to it! However, I’m signed up to A111 for start on Oct - can you say much about the timing of the TMAs and how they are spaced out throughout the year, worried about holiday plans clashing with assessments 😂
Thanks for this video, did you complete the law degree in the end? What were your thoughts of the overall course? Would you have chosen History originally if you could go back in time?
I graduated law last year. The pathway I completed is being phased out and replaced with a new pathway at the OU so students now have more variety in module options and can also study towards the new SQE exams. Overall I enjoyed it and found it a worthwhile challenge. When I started law I had some thoughts about going into it, however, now I know I’m probably not going to use it I may have studied the arts and humanities instead. However, a law degree does look great on the CV and I’m still glad I did it 😊
Hi Dan thank you for this video - Weirdly the exact same thing happened to me 😂 I started Natural Sciences but struggled a lot so decided to switch to English Literature and Creative Writing instead. I don't start until October but this was a great introduction to it and what to expect!
That’s great to hear. I hope you enjoy the module. For the most part it’s great, near the end I did find it was too broad for my tastes so I’m looking forward to A112 a bit more when I start that in October 😊
It’s a great course with such diversity. Wishing there was more history content but I’m still enjoying the various topics nonetheless. Ah TMA 01… I’ve made a plan but plan on getting it done on my week off next week, thankfully seems like a nice gentle one to start with
@@DanUniAndBooks same Dan. I ended up choosing Cleopatra and Mary, which surprised me as I thought Elizabeth would’ve been a natural choice for me (given my obsession with Kings & Queen). Something resonated with Mary and I felt I could really get into the essay. Now working through Mozart!
@@artmonobw I’m sitting down today to crack out TMA 01, from my notes I’ve decided on Cleopatra and Elizabeth I, although I’m starting to wonder if that was the correct choice as there’s not much in the pamphlet 🤣 I didn’t mind Mozart but I can safely say music is not my calling
@@DanUniAndBooks love music… and love the diversity of this course. I just need to get a bit more organised. Amazing how quickly the time just disappears! Heading out for a tutorial day tomorrow - really excited about it.
@@artmonobw enjoy! I really liked the day tutorials when I did law before Covid hit. Unfortunately for this module my nearest day school is over 30 miles away and the first few are all days I’m working but hoping to get to one in July
What would you suggest for the academic writing side? Could I get a tutor to help me learn how to write academically? Or if you have any upcoming videos that would be great! I love learning, studying, but feel the writing is what blocks me from trying out
If you study with the OU there are plenty of study aids that help with academic writing, as well as a tutor who will also help. My background is in law so the academic writing is a little different but I might do a video on academic writing for the arts and humanities when I get more comfortable with it myself 😊
