Stuff Riders Say...to Farriers 

If you ever want a farrier to hate you, just say and do all of this. 😂

When my son, Joseph, was 7, they were studying careers in school; when the Farrier arrived my son looked at him and said "So when did you know you wanted to be a Fairy?

I love my farrier and make sure I have hot coffee and treats waiting for him when he arrives. My horses are groomed fly sprayed, tails braided and out of the way, feet are cleaned and they are standing tied when he walks into the barn. I tell him to trim/shoe them as he would his own.. and I ALWAYS TIP! Just a few things to make sure he WANTS to come back.. ;)

All of these are good, but the ones I just LOVE start with:"I don't wanna tell you how to do your job, but..." Usually goes downhill from there.

I feel for farriers. :')

I was married to a farrier for 26 yrs. Most of this stuff is pretty mild. The worst was when a customer wanted my husband to talk on the phone to the horse phsycic in Montana (we were in TX) who would tell him how to show the horse. Needless to say we had an opening for a new customer after that!

I love the hat scratching moment when she gets trimming tools. I feel like every time I get a bad idea-horse related or not-I get that reaction hahaha XD

Uhm how much will this cost? Does he REALLY need all that done? Will it cost more if he hasnt been shoed in like uhhhhhh a year? Hes a rescue and I'm not sure if hes ever had his feet touched. Should I caption this picture "good with farrier" on my instagram page?

"He's in the upper pen, money's in the feed barrel,call me if there's anything I need to know" Thats all they need to hear from me. I like when people leave me alone to do my job,so I try to leave others alone to do theirs.

As someone who worked with a grumpy old farrier back in the day (I adored him and he trained me well not to say or do stupid stuff) I can only imagine what he would say to all of this. Haha

Okay, the one about getting your own trimming tools really got me😂

When my horse starts acting up when the farrier is working on him all I gotta do is either snap my fingers or clear my throat and he’ll stop and snort lol. My farrier said I’m the first kid that he’s had that’s horse listens so much to its owner lol

My favorite is when they bring up a dripping wet horse and say he's nice and clean I just gave him a bath see ya later

Shes in the field i am sure she will come right up to you.....an hr later after sprinting up and down he finally catches her!

So much of this is so true. I knew a woman who 's mare was always lame, sore or needing a vet to come out. Turns out, she'd watched a video about trimming horses, bought all the tools and then started 'trimming' her mare's feet. That poor horse was always hurting because the idiot had no idea what she was doing. Let the farrier do his job. I'm lucky...I've got a really, really good one.

Farrier to owner: Can YOU pick up his feet? Owner: No, but I'm sure he'll be fine!

i’ve only ever met my barn’s farrier once. i was told that “as long as you don’t talk to him or ask him any questions, everything will go smoothly.” i can now see why 😂

I just leave everything up to the farrier to do. although I do have my fair share of stupid questions.

I've heard all the above! The one I hear the most he usually never acts like this.

The last one got me lol. I’m in college and work 2 jobs. So I’m typically not available when my farrier is but my Dad and I have known him for the past 12 years and he is just amazing. I only have 1 mare now and I haven’t seen him in a few months because I just leave the money in the barn and he comes over and trims by himself. My Dad and I have told him multiple times that My Dad could come over if he needed to but he said that it wasn’t necessary because Sugar (my mare) is very well behaved and isn’t an issue lol

Well...I keep the shoes. Mainly to clean and then hang up in my room 😁😁😁

This randomly came in my recommended and I just got flashbacks of having to pay 160£ every 5 weeks for aluminium heart bars on my horses front feet as he had laminitis

We had a farrier once😂 he was about 19, and we got stuck in town at the emergency room for somethin, and he ended up trimming our paint on his own loose in the pasture, and took a 30minute nap, then trimmed the pony and was starting a draft by the time we got there😂 he only charged us $75 cause the paint was so easy and he got a nap in

I took a basic farrier course once and still have the HUGE book that went with it and I'd still never say anything like this to my farrier. I trust my farrier the most out of all the people I need to call out for my horse.

Wow...it has not changed much. I graduated from Farrier Science at Olds College in 1977.....I heard so many of those exact questions😁😁😂😂🤣

But there is also generous dose of no shows and outrageously lates on the Farrier's end too. Not to mention the fronts trimmed at wildly different angles and lengths, or horses set on toes or heals cut flat off, hot nails, trimmed too short, and God save us all...hand forged shoes at 3 X the price that refuse to stay clinched! What the heck if you want a covered cement work area with a swamp cooler running you can set up at *your* place. If you are good at what you do I'll trailer to you! In fact I would LOVE that. I am not a ditzy little girl and have seen some really poor work done by well known farriers. I have also heard all the silly little statements like on this vid. Hell I bought 3 horses from the best farrier I ever had. He then quit shoeing and went to work for wages. I always accused him of planning that, and we are still friends.

Friend asked me to hold her horse for her farrier as she couldn't be there. I asked if her horse was good and she said, "He's pretty good" and then added but don't let him lean on the garage door cause he'll dent it.

Can I keep his shoes? Ok. Why is THAT so terrible? I lost my mare to bastard strangles in 2002, and one of my prized possessions is the last set of her shoes. After the euthanasia, I called a backhoe operator to bury her. While I was waiting for him to show up I went out just say my last goodbye and I realized she had her shoes on in the horrendous moments the night before I forgot to ask the vet to pull her shoes. Anyone who was big in cutting horses in the 1960s would certainly know who Eddie Wilson is, of the famed Doc's Prescription. He lives down the street from me. I called him in tears, he came over directly and pulled her shoes for me. That's all I have left of her besides pictures and memories. Because in this world you never know what's coming around the corner. This mare was 5 1/2 years old when I lost her. It was quick and sudden and yes I wanted her shoes pardon me mister high-and-mighty farrier. Sometimes there's a real good reason to give those shoes to the horse's owner if they ask for them. See it's been 17 and 1/2 years, and I'm still not over it. Losing her really sunk my ship Edit: Eddie is 83 now. Still breaking and training World class cutting horses. He's the toughest cowboy I ever met and he's one of my dearest friends.

The farrier doing my horse's shoes (for real) thinks he's a really great one. He's the kinda horse that'll lift his hooves on his own, gives little kisses, watches what you're doing and have full focus on you and only you! He likes getting his feet done...

Imagine if this was one farrier trip! If I was the farrier I would explode 🤯

All normal questions, nothing wrong with them, except: "He usually never bites," "Is it cool if my dog hangs out with you," "Is it ok if I mail you a check?" "I've got about 4 more for you," and "She's in the back field but I'm sure she'll come right up to you." ESPECIALLY the one about the check in the mail. And that barn kitty is a fun distraction, but ya can't pay the bills with it. lol

My friend has a horse and her dad is a farrier so she saves so much money!!!!

Okayyyyy. I'm gonna be THAT horse owner. My horses are worth everything to me and race 3 to 5 days a week spring-fall. If my horse keeps overreaching and grabbing his fronts, making us trip and fall around a barrel, your ass is fired. Because you did not listen to me when I told you how I needed this specific horse shod. Thank God I finally found a farrier who listens. My horse hasn't overreached and grabbed his front since I switched and asked my farrier to slow down his backs. It's not about the cost. It's about mine and my horses safety. I do have a rasp and pullers so that I can pull one if they throw one. But other than that, I would NEVER expect my farrier to deal with catching my horses, putting them away, or any other owner responsibilities.

Awesome thank you I appreciate it. .....Hey John it's 4, are you still going to make it?..... Hey John you never showed up last week, that's fine we can do this week. What time will you be coming? Yeah two is great...... Yeah hi John nice to hear from you. I noticed you didn't show up yesterday. Either. Yes I still just need two trims and one set of shoes. Yes I would love it if you can make it sometime in the next five years. Farrier finally shows up two weeks later, sometimes three and informs me that he's raised his prices. Find new farrier and repeat.
