I can’t put my finger on it, but you capture travel in such a brilliant way. No ‘influencer’ nonsense, just your own views and on a budget. Thank you and keep them coming.
I agree with you Fist i am completely relax watching with no nonsense just simple videos of the town I am going to spain in one month from Canada so i am searching for destination
The ship mural is commemorating a Spanish navy sail training ship called the Nautilus, which before they brought her into service was the Carrick Castle, built in Glasgow in 1866.
This is where spaniards from southern Spain come for the cooler climate and their summer holidays. Good time of the year for your visit. It can be heaving from June onwards.I was there with my son about 5 years ago via FEVE
I remember being in San Sebastian about 1983 when I was 12. Two things I remember - my dad parking his car in a space where anyone else who'd parked left their handbrakes off, and clutch out (or their doors unlocked), so that when you had to fit into a parking space, you either opened their door and pushed it forward, or you just moved into a space and bumped the other car forward gently with your own. Second thing was being separated from my family and being in a place in the centre of town where someone had just been shot - ETA perhaps? As a curious kid I hung about and climbed up something for a better view before I was found. Little was I to know that many years later I'd live in South Africa where I'd see many more people shot, but no-one ever left their cars unlocked. 🤣
I love small, compact towns like this, especially when they have easy access to longer distance public transport :) And those colourful wavebreakers are definitely a step up from the regular dull grey of concrete in my eyes! An absolute gem of a town, indeed.
You were right about a hidden gem. If you Google it says... Llanes economy is boosted by tourists mostly from the rest of Spain in the summer. The town has traditional shops and restaurants, both in and around the town, and the zona de copas is lively at night in summer. Looks like a very nice place👍
No! 😮 Don’t tell people about Asturias, it’s our secret. Next time go a little further along the sea to Po de Llanes lagoon, one of the best beaches in the world. Po is a nice village too. The whole area is amazing. Just don’t tell anyone.
Hi Steve, we watched your video and as we are currently on a road trip from Lancashire, we are currently staying in Cantabria. We went to Llanes today and were not disappointed. What a great town. We pretty much visited all the places on your video. The trees are amazing with all their leaves on. We also enjoyed a train ride to Santander yesterday after your great video. Keep up the great work. We love your videos and adventures. Very inspiring x
Been going to Llanes for 15 years. It's beautiful and so is the surrounding area. Have a trip to Potes in the Picos de Europa. The scenery is stunning. Or Ribadsella just up the coast. It's all fantastic from Santander to Oviedo
Asturias with its stunning scenery and great food is one of most beauitul parts of this country along with Pais Vasco and Galicia. Get yourself to Oviedo, its a beautiful city. Gracias Steve, eres un crack!
What an amazing hidden gem Llanes is. Great to get an extra video from my favourite RU-vidrs. Thanks Steve as always. Made my crap day a lot lot better ❤
I first traveled to Llanes on my honeymoon in June of 1994. My wife and I spent 3-4 days there before heading to los Picos de Europa. This video brought back a lot of wonderful memories. We absolutely loved Llanes, and the small villages around up and down the coast. I love your videography. Happy travels!
Llanes is one of my favorite towns in Asturias. It is just lovely. The cubes are called Los Cubos de la Memoria. There's a sweet shop that sells candy versions of them.
I think you found a real little gem there Steve! What a beautiful little town in a beautiful setting and such a rugged coast line - I bet a number of sailing ships were wrecked off those cliffs!
This made my week so much brighter! What a tremendous treasure you found, such beautiful architecture and stunning natural views! I feel like I could spend the remainder of my days there, if I had my druthers. 😉 Glad Alicja was able to experience it too. 👍🏼
Nothing quite like finding somewhere special on your travels that is unexpected . What a beautiful town with interesting old buildings . For me though the coastal walk with both sea and mountain views were what made it really special . Thank you for sharing . It was awesome
Steve, would love to see your camino videos, whichever one you decide to do...if you do. I cycled , and partly walked also, the classic Camino Frances, (including Fisterra ..of course ) some 18 years ago. A quite wonderful experience , I can remember the names of all those I spent a little time with, and the journey ended with quite an emotional synchronicity involving my long passed away father. This sort of thing can happen sometimes on these classic pilgrim trails. Overall, a great adventure, and good vibes all the way, every day different. . Personally I would use my open toed sandals for the journey, as I did when I walked part of the Via de la Plata.....no blisters !! Much love
Llanes looks smashing, it’s great when you find yourself somewhere you know nowt about and it turns out to be knockout. Even better when it’s peaceful too. Reminds me of the first time I went to Crail years ago, beautiful and no bugger there, I never wanted to leave. Great film Steve, thanks. 🙏
Real nice, Llanes is a hit. Thanks for reminding us. Wasn't it for some hospital visit I would drive down there, Google says 26 hours, but I've heard that people drive to Santander in less than 20...
Always look forward to your videos, to discover another place I knew little about or never knew existed. You have a knack for finding things I'd never even think of. Great video as always!
Yes! Did the Camino back in 2004! Really worthwhile and the amazing cathedral (and the Botafumeiro!) at the end really made it all special! Food also excellent. We arrived on St James' Day (=Santiago) so there was also a lot of other stuff going on. You have to do it! Love your channel!
What a stunning town lovely the old buildings are fantastic so beautiful by the sea great video again well worth the stop off 😊😊😊 a very interesting place
Northern Spain is where my family is from. Growing up in North America, no one knew about it the region at all - when we talked about Spain everyone pictured hot, sunny, southern Spain until we'd describe the coastline, greenery (it rains a lot in Asturias), and mountains. It is spectacular and you are right - a hidden gem. Great festivals and lively, lovely summers in that region!! Thank you for covering this and glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Steve I’m a Scot like yourself & have been living in Andalucia for 18 years .now planning to live in Asturias but unsure what village to choose until now . Thank you so much for this video …love it & the town ❤
What a beautiful, clean town Llanes seems to be. I’m glad Alicja was able to go back with you. I enjoyed your train journey to and from Llanes as well. Happy, safe travels to you both. Cheers 🥰😎
dear Steve,.............another great video....................thanks for sharing....................take care of you.........Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
Wow. What a beauty And I quite like the coloured blocks. (But at the risk of sounding even older than I am .... shame about all that graffiti around the town and harbour lol). Another fine watch, cheers!
Great video again Steve and nice Cameo at the end, looks fabulous just shows what you can find if you don't go to the typical touristy places in certain areas of a well known country.
Great to see you enjoying Llanes. I spent a fair bit of time there in my teens and then went back to film there in around 2005 (making telly is my job ... and now it's yours). It's a region to explore further ... Picos de Europa, Cangas D'Onis, Lagos de Covadonga, Cabrales (especially if you like cheese .... best cheese in the world). Fuente De, Potes, Hermida gorge. All amazing.
What a beautiful gem on spanish coast...ssh steve try keep it a secret😊but i think the hike brings many people.i know of someone who has jyst done that hike for charity....yes you and alicia should take up that challenge. Those huge cubes on water side are amazing.like childrens building bricks....you really walked a long way.👍well done.
Lovely film Steve. We were there just a few days ago. I got terrible food poisoning, from the Pirate restaurant. I should have trusted my instinct, instead of the Lonely Planet guide book. Plenty of other great restaurants. We stayed half an hour up the coast and it was one of the best holiday’s we have ever had. Interesting that you caught the train, as we only saw one, in a month of travel next to the railway. Digging deeper, we found that the whole of the board of the railway company had resigned, as they had ordered new rolling stock, and it wouldn’t fit through the tunnels.
Beatiful to see Llanes almost empty, only with the locals. In summer it's packed with people, like me who try to escape the heat of Madrid. The North of Spain has plenty of other gems in that 50/60 km radius: Comillas, San Vicente de la Barquera, Ribadesella, Colombres, etc. And in summer there's also many French and Dutch, so I'm affraid it's not that hidden. 😉
Muchas gracias por el magnifico video. Really looks like a beautiful town. I always love your slightly impromptu style deciding where to go and what to see. And great that Alicja was able to join you and see it too.
I did a roadtrip to Santiago about 10 years ago (following the more inland sections of The Camino for a bit..) and wanted to return via the Northern Coastal road but was over-ruled in grounds of time, even on the map it looked very tempting and you've proved me right !! Those big blocks look like some giant kid's toys dumped on the shore, also reminded me a bit of the WW2 anti-tank barriers which used to line the East Lothian coastline in my childhood (some still there !)
Lovely video, Steve. Very simple but enjoyable. Asturias is the birthplace of my parents, which I visited a number of times, but I didn't know Llanes. Thanks for showing it that nicely.
A beautiful place that makes me wish I had explored the north of Spain when I lived in Britain. So many of us are drawn to the heat of the south because we can have some wishy-washy summers at home. Sometimes a little ad hoc foray into an unplanned place can turn up trumps and this did. Thanks for taking us there and I am sure that Alicja enjoyed it.
The landscape/ seacoast reminds me of Skye. And it is hardly that 'wee'.. it is a proper town. The place looks so clean, too. And I AM looking for a good place to live in Northern Spain. Thanks for spams a nice long day there and showing me round.
Great stuff, Steve. Walked from Santander to gijon on the camino del norte three years ago. Looks like you both got to see the amazing cliffs and beaches and playa de poo (no joke that's it's name!). A few km Further on is playa de Barro, amazing white sandy beach and a potential short holiday base. Village of Nueva is very pretty and town of Ribadasella a decent shout. Those amazing bright, fin de siecle mansions apparently build by returning Asturians who made their fortune in south America! Kevin
You were right Steve, Llanes is a gem and certainly worth a video of its own. Awesome views at every corner. I love the "wee" harbour and the walk around it! But I noticed a difference between boys and girls: racks of clothes, Todo 5€. Girl at least looks through the specials, boy: walks right past 😂 Wonderful you two had a good time in Llanes together ❤
