This has been on my radar for a couple of months. I am so excited for it! The xcom vibe, the pulpiness, the story, the characters, it looks like it will be a delight.
I love the art style in this. Also, Gendarmerie are the French military police, pronounced with that soft French G (Said in a very similar way as the Jean in Jean-Luc Picard), so like zhon-da-muh-ree.
Yep, coming from the medieval gens-d'armes or the more well-known english translation men-at-arms. They were the first standing armed force in a feudal Europe and gradually evolved to be used as heavy-duty police.
Sorry to say, not military police. Gendamerie means 'police' in French. They can be any type of police. But in France, specifically it means the fuzz, man!
I'm loving this new turn-based strategy motif also seen in Mutant Year Zero and WCG:DH of free exploration and combat being integrated. Makes for a very immersive experience.
@@imperiallarch7610 that one! Lol I think that it had good ideas that were poorly implemented. You can finish most of the game with a squad of two if they have that ability to “clean” the bodies.
@@imperiallarch7610 Honestly, i preferred Empire of Sin over Phantom Doctrine though, before the latest patch kinda broke it. Either way, both of those games are now abandoned though. But at least The Lamplighter's League is going to make us forget about those abandoned games.
Phantom doctrine had a simple solution for 'clean' bodies. Play on hard difficulty and you got a significantly greater challenge. Personally, I loved the Phantom doctrine, unfortunately it was abandoned by the developers far too soon.
This kind of pre/mid-WW2 globetrotting pulp adventure is one of my favorite genres. It’s why I loved Strange Brigade & was interested in that Chuckefish game Pathway that I never got around to playing. The fact that Paradox & Harebrained Schemes picked this setting is fantastic. Wishlisted it the moment we got that trailer
Dude, I was so pumped about this from the teaser stuff they put out, but it looks INCREDIBLE. The polish and atmosphere are perfect, and the combat seems fun. Can't wait to give it a try.
You know when a game tells you that when encountering a boss its ok, even advisable to run (especially in the tutorial) it usually means the Boss is impossible to defeat or doing so will have you fail the mission. For Chris Odd its just another Tuesday. You sir are the Grand Master of X-Com games where no challenge seems tall enough to truly trouble you. I would not be surprised if the Devs themselves are scratching their heads and say "How the heck did he beat the Boss without loosing anyone and only with three party members?" I salute and bow before your mastery. A wonder and joy to watch.
Looks terrific. Really liking the art style. Some of the combat elements seem like they might take some trial and error to get used to, but hey, they can't be all the same. And bonus points for the "over the shoulder" type camera angle on some of the attacks.
I love how the live infiltration transitions to turn based. You can try to split up your team and hit them from different angles all at once, or one character can get caught and blow the plan
Indiana Jones meets League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets XCOM meets the pulp fiction charm of 1930s adventures. Totally here for it, Odd. Awesome stuff and hopefully EA means a soon-to-be release for The Lamplighters League which is looking very charming and super fun.
This game is visually incredible, and looks like an awesome take on Xcom. I've had it on my wishlist for a while now, thanks for covering it. The video just made me even more excited for the game
@@Mustang1984 They even have 3 classes, so a team of 3. sounds familiar? I think Mutant is a real underappreciated gem, not too complex, not too long. does the job and with really cool protagonists that are easy to like.
@@dangilboa6496 Yeah, I agree. I remember when the devs were doing a live playthru showing us the features* and such. Was excited before release and I think it lived up to the hype in my mind. But yeah, good devs are hard to find nowadays.
This looks fantastic. Superb characters, art style, writing, voice acting, and music, with a very appealing blend of real-time and turn-based tactics. Looks like HBS has another great game on their hands, can't wait for the full release!
Excellent video. Thanks for this! (1:44) "Djinn" is the source of the English word "genie". The name "Lateef" is also Arabic; it means "gentleman". (4:25) That "kicker" joke is a little too on the nose. I'd have gone with a "best foot forward" quip.
Between the Shadowrun games and Battletech, pretty much everything Harebrained Schemes has done has been awesome. And this looks really fun, so it seems like their streak is continuing. I guess those previous games didn't particularly grab you, so I'm glad you're enjoying this one. I would love to see a full playthrough.
Agreed! I've been buying their stuff since I backed Shadowrun Returns back in the day. Glad to see they're still hard at work. Can't wait to get my hands on this one.
I loved the Shadowrun games. I loved Battletech also but took a break and now I forget too much so have to start over. It’s on my list. I have an incredible backlog at the moment. It’s really a saturated game market if folk stepped back and looked at it. It’s sort of senseless to fork out $60 for a game at this point. Hopefully this one will be cheaper.
I can’t believe how many cool and interesting new games went under the radar for me, it’s good we have mr Odd to have our back to have them on his channel love your channel! ❤❤❤
Man, this game is absolutely amazing!!! Every single detail makes it so neat, for real. The concept, the gameplay, I mean, just everything about it looks so gorgeous. I'm not much of a gamer, but I'd play this one, for sure!!! I know I'll love a complete playthrough, so I'll just be waiting for when it comes. 😁
Ooh finally someone getting a preview and not just anybody - but TBS veteran Christopher Rod (that is always what YT subtitles say in your welcoming line :D ). Thanks Odd!
Oh my goodness! This is giving me a bucket load of "Strange Brigade" tingles. Love me some gaslamp noir, chuck in some secret societies, a nefarious cult or two and a lantern-jawed chap by the name of Rupert Effingham-Hynge and crikey! I'm all for it.
@28:37 "You'll get it next time" what great programming, I am 100% sure that was the right thing to say I mean if someone is shooting you and it misses you would actually say that. WTH is wrong with game companies when they can not even do that.
I suspect that was unintentional. There's no reason, in terms of gameplay or logic, that overwatch should've ignored the blind effect that I can see. Honestly I'm really disappointed with that encounter, if you're going to design an intended defeat like that, it should actually be challenging. I was rather annoyed to see Odd was able to blunder his was through that first try. More than anything else I'm annoyed he did it accidentally after somehow failing to understand the game explicitly telling him NOT to engage rather than taking the encounter on intentionally as a challenge. I will give credit to the developers for seemingly having voice lines prepared for that contingency, it's always nice to see, especially since they're willing to acknowledge your achievement (as underwhelming as I might believe it is) of beating the encounter. I guess this is kind of a silly thing to nitpick over, but it really bothers me.
@36:53 After two years of Baldur's Gate3 which can't comprehend transitions from real-time to turn based seeing a neutral enemy behave within turn-based structure feels mindblowing 🤣
I love the setting & atmosphere, half noir half pulp early 20th century, reminds me of my PnP sessions of Call of Cthulhu with the mix of weird science and supernatural - but with less insanity and horror I expect
*Lamplighting* is also the modern term for taking care of/securing a safe house. Fits well with the game's apparent theme! *ALSO* If Lateef was sick, and drank something that cured him...would it be a *Djinn and Tonic?* :) if you charged him with Battery would it be a *Djinn and Juice?* *Ba dum- tish!* thank you folks, thank you, don't forget to tip your wait staff!
Looking forward to this Chris the 1930's graphics look great and the score is great music , you are going to do it ?? Sure you will smash this LoL. Gentleman Genie LoL PS Please put your box of you back on
Ever since I played Der Clou! 2 or The Sting I always wanted games with this vibe. To this day there is no game that makes me feel like a thief making plans like that game. There was a game heavily inspired by it with 70s vibe, but it didnt connect the same way.
Loving the look and feel of this, a couple of game mechanics will take getting used to, like the fact that everyone just tags along and can't be seen 😒....but can't wait to see you play the full game....
Cheers man, I dig your work. You seem to always pick games that are right in my wheelhouse. XCOM is in my top 3 games and you always do fun stuff with that series and all these other XCOM-Likes you're showing off are great too. Keep up the great work. I'm loving Showgunners which I only learned about through you and this seems like the kind of game I'd really dig playing as well. Thanks so much for showing off stuff like this.
Looks cool - mutant year zero something in the 1930s….also some anime’s (princess principal, spy school, gosick maybe? etc….) come to mind. Keeping an eye on this one.
First of all thank you for this. Second of all congrats on getting that pre-release look. Finally just know I have been excited for this game for a while now! Have a great day Mr Odd!
Looks like this was made by the Shadowrun folks, so i am cautiously optimistic about this game. Hopefully they’ll fix the camera issues, or hide any obstacles to camera when in critical moments. Love the art style and i’m a big Call of Cthulhu fan so this is right up my street.
I love 30s and 40s style noir. I always use those eras for my Call of Cthulhu rpg and stories I write for my characters. I'd love if they displayed more Lovecraftian influence around the edges but perhaps they are approaching that as a slow burn background theme that will be more focused in late game of dlc. No matter. I want this game.
For something that's not even open beta, talk about a polished game. Just a few " I's " and " T's " to cross by the looks of things. If AAA studios could come close to this kind quality at full release maybe they wouldn't get trashed so badly in reviews. ( Huge poke, poke. ) Take care everybody. 🙂👍
Looks like it will be 80% within the "shut up and take my money" zone for me. I hope there will be a good range of maps generated so that you don't run into the Showgunners problem that once you've run through a campaign once, there won't be a lot of reason to go through it again.
I am currently playing and loving Miasma Chronicles so I was hoping this would be my next game but the lack of announced release date worries me, considering we're almost halfway through the year...
@@nukesean I think the base building helps the missions feel as if there’s an actual point to them beyond the gameplay. For me, the gameplay would get stale for this type of game without the progression and rewards that successfully completing a mission offers. I suppose it doesn’t necessarily need to be base building, but some sort of meaningful progression system is needed beyond just completing story missions to keep me interested.
@17:10 It's interesting. Shoot pistol says "+20% crit chance vs. flanked and unaware enemies" yet you get a +30% for unaware enemies. And yea, the 2 quickdraw 20% boni are strange too, unless it's doubled for unaware enemies too?
I truly hope there is something a lot more unique about this game. Presently it looks like a reskinned verson of Paradox's Empire of Sin using Pixar characters. ;)
There's some really cool elements. I hope each character's tool kits develops as it may seem like battles gets too repetitive, if you don't give us enough different methods of solving the puzzles. The music was sort of off for me. It fitted the theme quite well, but it isn't an easy listen, somehow making it draining (for lack of a better word) to listen to. I realise this is a weird critique.
I love the art style and the look of the game, the gameplay looks smooth and the voice over decent. I hope the story is good and there isn't too much political correctness shove into it. Right now it's looking like a very high chance of buying this game. X-com 2 is one of my favorite game of all time.
I liked it mainly because it was a cool chill change of pace mixed with some cool graphics and mystery and it is a unique type of game. They take fishing simulator to the next level 😉
