Lefkada (also known as Leukas or Lefkas, Greek: Λευκάδα Lefkáda, Ancient Greek: Λευκάς Lefkász) is one of the Ionian Islands in the western part of Greece. Actually a peninsula, it is separated from the mainland by a narrow sea channel that flows into a lagoon, cutting through the marshy isthmus that connected the island to the mainland.
It is connected to the mainland by an artificial embankment and a bridge that can be opened. Its main settlement and seat is Lefkáda of the same name, which is located at the NE tip of the island at the foot of the bridge leading to the mainland. The population of the city was 14,000 in 2001.
