Wow! Can we rewind a couple of years when it was far less expensive to be a Nikon aficionado. What a lens and available within a couple of weeks! It looks like Nikon will finish the calendar year off quite strong.
I have been following Matt since the beginning of his channel... And honestly Matt and Nikon mirrorless system is growing day by day... Happy for both of them...❤
10am uk time.... I've been with Nikon for over 40 years (apart from my Leica Q2) and they still surpass all my expectations. This lens is the perfect example of their commitment to the Nikon photographer family. Thanks yet again Matt for your brilliant overview 😊
@MattIrwinPhotography yes definitely Matt. Will now take precedence over the ZF... there is so much coming in from Nikon at the moment. I can't keep up🤣
Nice job Nikon! Love the aperture control, they also set this up for video use. It is a first in the line of new lens, hopefully we will see more soon.
Wow! Now I understand what they mean by the Z-mount "potential" this is one way I didn't think of to use the larger mouth! Vey purposeful and smart engineering on their part! Kudos! I cannot wait to see your full review! This is very exciting!
Shocked that itll be under 3k. Congrats to all the winners. As a multipurposenphotographer i still have a few other kit pieces i have to prioritize but this is on my 4 year timeline for sure.
This is the reason for being in the Z system. The Z mount. Noct was the showcase. This is a lens I have been waiting for. 135mm 1,8 An all rounder for any photographic occasion. Will preorder tomorrow. ❤❤❤
@@MattIrwinPhotography Yes Matt, as you say - its all about the Z mount - this is what Nikon said right at the beginning when they introduced the Z6/7 - it just did not make immediate sense as they also released a 35 and 50 1.8, which did not seem special at the time - until we started using these lenses. And now, here we are - Nikon using the advantages of the mount to make optics that are NOT possible from other manufacturers - Z continues to gain in strength and momentum as the other brands begin to plateau (especially with respect to lens design) - I think this is a trend that will continue well into the future. -PD
Amazing Matt. I can’t wait to have this lens as a part of my kit. Another sensational lens for shooting inside small stadiums as well as wildlife. Nice work Nikon… Well done Matt. 👍🏻
I was waiting to see the 135mm and this lens sure did bring a nice surprise. This is going to be one of those must haves as 135mm has it's own little niche.
no cameras look that great like Nikons, really - compared to FF Sony, Canon, Panasonic. And this Plena looks alaso great with beautiful rendering. A dream lens for concerts in small clubs.
Amazing Matt. I can’t wait to have this lens as a part of my kit. Another sensational lens for shooting inside small stadiums and wildlife. We’ll do e Nikon… We’ll done Matt. 👍🏻
As someone who came of age in the era of Canon dominating DSLRs (for video) and then Sony dominating mirrorless, I've never had much use for Nikon, but their glass releases over the last few years have been wonderful.
Pretty nicely priced. I'm still hoping for a replacement for the F mount 105mm f/1.4 that I'm still in love with even on my Z9. So many great releases from Nikon.
Just a couple of years ago I had a Nikon D750 and was on the verge of leaving Nikon...I'm glad I stayed with Nikon and switched to the Z system now that they are churning out masterpieces one after another...
Hi Matt, congratulations on your fine video! Great lens, I would have appreciated the features in the 85/1.2, but alas, it's just a marvel as it is I like my portraits best in the 50-85/105 range, but I'm happy for everyone who gets the Plena! Great to see, that 'Plena' doesn't introduce a big price hit, finely done, Nikon! ✌ Amazing, with which great glass Nikon provides us, unbelievable optics just a few years ago! Cheers, Martin
Love that smart folk like you get to preview these lenses so we know what to expect right upon release. Thanks. As amazing as this lens sounds, I don’t think it fits my mostly nature shooting. For an outdoor wedding photo of the vows, I bet it would make everyone but the couple turn to a lovely, creamy background.
Nikon have really outdone themselves here. This is a future-proof lens, as far as lenses go - great to see optical corrections are coming back into fashion, after years where we've seen everything done in post-processing!
Looks like the first of the new breed. After the 85 1.2 my buget likely will not havebroom for this one. Leaves me eager to see what is next in Plenaworls! Cheers, Matt. Well done.
I just love your videos! I would love to own this lens someday. I’m still on the the journey of converting to all Z mounts lens. Melbourne looks amazing!
Whoa! Pretty amazing, if in your esteemed opinion that it may surpass the now legendary Z 85/1.2S !!! Thanks so very much for this presentation on Day 1.
Greatly informative early doors video Matt. Given the advantages in vignette control with this lens, would that also translate across to distortion? As such this would be an awesome product photography or archival art lens.
Interesting new Lens! ...... Doesn't matter how great Plena is, for sure, it is nowhere near your extremely passionate, deeply emotional, and lovely energetic presentation of the Z 85mm f1.2 S 🙂
What a splendid lens! $2499 USD, less than the 85/1.2! I do hope in your in-depth video you have comparisons to the 85/1.2, many of us are wondering how much difference there is, aside from the obvious focal length. Some of us are running the excellent Sigma Art 135/1.8 with an FTZ. Obviously won't be able to match the bokeh to the corners, even if mounted on a native F-mount full frame, but otherwise wonder how they would compare. It would probably be overwhelming, but the Nikon and Sigma Art 105 1.4's are also in that neighborhood, so many fine optics... One question many of us now have is pick up the new Plena or the new Zf, or see what magic appears in the forthcoming Nikon 35 1.2? Will it also be a Plena??? Looking forward yo your review!
Magnetically Controlled Aperture looks so smooth at 8:24, smooth aperture changes for video is great - would be really cool if it also allows for a fully de-clicked aperture and therefore full control over depth of field (aka defocus control)?
Great work as always Matt. I use the 85mm 1.2 as an action lens and this works already pretty well. It will be interesting how it compares to the new 135mm 1.8 Plena. Now I have to wait until the 135mm arrives 🙂
@@christophlaue2484How fast is the action you're shooting with the Z9 and 85/1.2? I shoot athletics and combat sports, and accurate shots with 85/1.2 would be awesome.
@@raksh9 I shoot mainly cycling action. My keepers are around 75% - 80% from a sequence. Most of the time I can ask for a rerun, if it dosen't hit perfectly tho.
135 is a focal length that hasn't gotten much love since the 80's. The 70/80-200 f2.8 zooms became popular and common and reduced the need for the once common 135/2.8 prime that so many people had with their 35mm film cameras. There was a fast Ai version, and the only autofocus version i recall was the AF DC-Nikkor. The DC was a stuning performer but not intuitive to use, and most people didn't get on with it well. If you did click with it, the results were otherworldly and difficult to duplicate with any other lens i ever used. This new Plena variant introduces both the dual motors so close range correction can work in a non-linear fashion, and adding the most recent exotic glass formulae and optical formulae eliminates the need for the poorly named "defocus control" that was a manually controlled correction feature for that chromatic aberration issue that all fast prime lenses are prone to. This is a remarkable achievement by nikon, and i have to appreciate it, but that cost is definitely outside my budget.
Certainly appears to be a beautiful lens. Due to my use case, I use mostly zoom lenses and sold my quite lovely Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG HSM Art lens when I bought my Z9 and sold the equally stellar Sigma 40mm f1.4 DG HSM Art lens when I bought my Z8. But, given the wonderful Z lenses that I've acquired, I must admit looking longingly at the Nikon Z 50mm f1.2, the Z 85mm f1.2 and now the 135mm f1.8. Well done, Nikon!!
Hello Matt, I think this is a lens that you were hope for a while ago, if not hoping for thought may well be coming before you started getting your hands on with Nikon. I ream way back i when I was at school on of the maester/teachers let be there zenth and their 135mm telephoto lens to go birding with. How disappointed with its reach then but that was back it the 1970's. How this 135mm lens very interesting portrait and studio lens. This may well be a next level lens and should have a place in any studio/portrait photographers bag, but just for me I am more that happy with my 85mm f1.2 lens. I would like to see one and get my hands on one. So good the hear you, keep well, keep safe and enjoy the great kit.
Hi Matt, i think getting the 135mm f/1.8 PLENA is a smart idea for the Z mount people who wants a 135mm and also dreaming about a getting much larger, heavier, pricier Nikon F 200mm f/2. On Crop mode and DX Z cameras, this lens is ideally a 200mm f/1.8 with high-end glass and coating.
Personally, I think Nikon are happy that theyve nearly completed the lens roadmap, and now they can start to experiment. The essentials are there for it to be a credible system, hopefully these special lenses can be the things that draw new people in
Haha something tells me that you already knew about this lens when you released your video 3 days ago. Great lens BTW. Maybe I should cancel my order on the 180-600😅
Wow, beauty! I refuse to 'pre order' anything (or give any credence to a 'shipping on' date from Nikon) ever again, however, so I'll need to wait for 2025 for this lens, surely LOL Can't wait to live vicariously through your video when you shoot with this lens! Cheers.
Larger image circle? I can hardly wait for you to declare that how well it will work with your proposed 'larger' sensor. This lens will be an incredible improvement over my beloved 135mm f2 DC
Glove the snow as always matt,I've always said like for like 135mm vs 85mm the 135 is more flattering for portraits, however I'll not be buying this lens,90% of shooters cannot afford £300]-4000 on each lens, nikon is turning into exotic lens collection and designing for the pro field consistently, why can Nikon release 2 lenses at the same Mm the PRO and standard? I didn't move to the Z brand to then have to shell out $30,000-60,000,if nikon had told me this I'd never moved from the DSLR.....I want this 135 more than any lens
I think it's time to look around at the likes of viltrox etc. They are producing very good lens at affordable prices. It is a bit frustrating when we see lens only for the .1% of photographers, but at least they are not blocking those other brands like Canon is doing.
$30,000-$60,000 would buy you every single lens made by Nikon for the Z mount. If you're trying to own every lens they make then you're a studio filled with pros, not a pro or an amateur. My bag is Z8/Z9 40mm f/2.0 85mm f/1.2 S 105mm f/2.8 S (for sale now) 135mm f/1.8 Plena (soon) 400mm f/4.5 S And I'll probably add a 35-150mm 2.0-2.8 Not even close to $30k and you can replace the Z8/Z9 with a pair of ZF really.
Nikon made a lot of more affordable lenses very early on for the Z mount. The 85mm f/1.8 is an extremely capable portrait lens. Those bigger primes are just the icing on the cake. And even a non-Plena version of this lens would still be pretty expensive.
@@michael-masi-2021 I was Referring to buying camera n lenses not just lenses or camera,,two cameras as most did on DSLR, and then the trinity lenses and then all the specialist glass on top, just under $10,000 for Z9+Z8 then price in the trinity glass then and so on,for me to replace all my wedding glass minimum + cameras 25,000, or wildlife n sports still £25,000 minimum $30.000, that's a lot of brass to throw into a new system and this doesn't include extra special glass that i would like
Hi Matt. Bootiful bokeh! Superb rendering all round. And the price is relatively good, though probably around $3400 🇨🇦. It'll be interesting to see if they continue this "Plena" line. I'd be all over a 105. I wonder if the 35 (1.2?) be in this category?
You must compare it to the F-mount 105mm 1.4 for us who are still holding on to the D850. Is this release the reason for us enthusiasts to make the leap to mirrorless, now?
Hi Matt and thanks for the review. I'm purchasing the Plena 135 mm. I wanted to ask you, have you noticed any big differences regarding the z 85 mm F1.2? apart from the price $1000 more. Thanks and I'll follow you with pleasure. Marco from Trentino Italy
I guess the super monster lens is your way! Not my choice! So it's sharp! Price? Price? I can guess, chasing Banker and CEO prices of Leica. One word nuts!
