If you love this story - please check out "In The Kingdom Of Ice' by Hampton Sides about the USS Jeannette. It was a remarkable instance of Russian-American teamwork in the early 1880s :) Hi from Australia!

I've been fascinated for only months if that's ok. Clicked on Nova's Arctic Ghost Ship for whatever reason. I was absolutely floored by this story that I had never even heard about. When they discovered the Terror, I must admit I broke down a little bit. Can't even imagine what those men went through. RIP.

The "research" vessel Martin Bergmann looks like it belongs on the Deadliest Catch~ but what a find!!
@agentorange81
@agentorange81 3 года назад
They refitted the fishing vessel because the area covered was twice that of the large research vessel its most likely what helped to find it more than anything else , I saw the numbers just the other night on a rather long speaking event by the researchers , funny how that little ship did more for the effort
@joesmoe71
@joesmoe71 7 лет назад
I wonder if they'll try to raise it? It's in 80 feet of water, so it's possible. Also it's been said if there are log books still aboard they still might be readable, so there might be a wealth of historical info to be yet found. Hopefully someday Amelia Earhart's plane and Sandy Irvine's body on Mt. Everest will also be found.

Who would name a ship Terror?
@terranrepublic7023
@terranrepublic7023 5 лет назад
It was a bomb ship (a type of naval ships specializing in bombardment of land targets from afar) before it was used for polar explorations... so i guess to unleash Terror on your enemy makes perfect sense and a good pun. But for this particular ship of course, she also gifted us The Star Spangled Banner, since she was one of the British ships bombarding Fort McHenry in 1814 and inspired the lyrics of the song.

If the Inuit knew of the ships back when they were trapped, why is no one asking why they left all those men to die?
@danMdan
@danMdan 4 года назад
Because the Inuit could possibly barely feed themselves let alone up to 100 extra mouths, in those extreme Artic conditions.
@vyvienn
@vyvienn Год назад
Because they set out with enough food for three years, so at this point, they would have been more than capable of feeding themselves. After 18 months in the ice, the more than one hundred men still alive decided to try to get back to the mainland on foot... and that did not end well.

That's global warming for you, those poor crew froze to death and here we are 150 years later and one of the men on the boat which finds them is actually just wearing a t-shirt

pizzaDhut global warming LOL . They have natural warming temps at different seasons global warming is a hoax. And he's native to there, he's used to the Temps cooler temps to him feel warmer than they do to somebody that is not from there
@filthyforeigner
@filthyforeigner 5 лет назад
@@xjohn1970 thanks for your opinion on global warming. It's stupid but it's okay. You can be stupid. And he didnt mean the dude who found the boat. He said a crew member was found IN the ship. His bones. His body. Dead. Only wearing a shirt. In those cold weather they traveled in. Think a little okay, little stupid Jay (:

@@filthyforeigner " and one of the men on the boat which finds them is actually just wearing a t-shirt " ...clearly pizzaDhut is referencing this 2:29 scene, so come down from your high horse. If you have difficulties understanding english grammar, don't write insulting comments on some video website ("Think a little okay, little stupid Jay (:" ---> really? Shall i aim the same condescending remark at your person now? Then again, i'm not you...). pizzaDhut: Global warming, global climate and regional climate are different things. The interesting thing which will allow you to wear t-shirts in that region during certain times of the year, is called seasons. It has nothing to do with global warming, it's part of the natural climate. During some years, the winter may be very long and harsh with a short or no summer season at all (like in Franklin's time), in other years it may be short and mild with longer and warmer summer seasons. There is never a constant intensity of seasons, never has been, never will be. And that's how nature worked long before mankind evolved, and that's how nature will work long after mankind has gone. Please inform yourself before judging. Knowledge is the only defense against ignorance.

Researchers have taken deep ice core samples in this area and determined a 40 year period with the middle beind 1840s - 1850s of extream cold. Previous to that time it was warmer climate and also in thw climate that followed that period. The Arctic's temperature varies drastically every year with some years a total freeze and locking in any ships in the he area to some years of hardly any ice. The core sample showed times of warmer weather more than 500 years ago. Warmer than it is today.
