That's a great point made at the end of the vid that i can't stress enough to people: most expensive games were once cheap and sometimes common. Time renders them in a different light sometimes, i remember seeing pretty much all of these for $20 back in the day.
I have a great collection for the Dreamcast but am missing still quite a bit but even have some imports many manuals and even some of the odd things like the bags and my bro has quite a few of the rear ones and even a kiosk of the Dreamcast but if you are needing some games for your collection let me know I have some duplicates but I would need to know what you need and what would you suggest for my collection that I have of these systems: Sega Systems:Dreamcast, Game Gear, Genesis, Saturn. Nintendo Systems: Nes, Snes, Gameboy Advance, Wii, Ds, 3ds, Game Cube, Nintendo 64. PlayStation Systems: Ps, Ps2, Psp 1000 and 2000. Xbox Systems: Xbox 360. Atari/ColicoVision Systems: ColicoVision and Adam Computer with built in ColicoVision with floppy disc reader for dragons lair and even plays buck rogers on cassette tape plus the Atari 2600 attachment module 1, and last but not least Atari 5200 with the 4 controller ports. what games do you suggest to get and what do you think I should do for my collection as I keep collecting on them.
Just wanted to say, as a new subscriber is utterly amazing. I'm having so much fun going through the archive of videos here and definitely looking forward to what comes next. Thank you for being awesome!
didn't see any of the expensive/ rare exclusives european games, should change the title to north american games. no MoHo which is more expensive then everything i seen here, goes for £160-200. no french exclusive taxi 2 no evil twin no aqua gt
I remeber buying my Dreamcast at Sears when they were 99.99 towards the end of its life and my mom bought it for my brother and I. We got to pick two games, I got Evil Dead and my brother got marvel vs capcom 1. DCast is in my top three favorite consoles. Love it in all its glory. Haha
The original Power Stone was actually what hooked me on the console. It was such a fun game! I just wish I stuck with the Dreamcast at the time instead of selling it! You live an learn I guess haha ;)
Same here. Powerstone Collection on PSP was the definitive version in my opinion. Yea you couldn’t do local coop, but all the extras and features made up for it. Loved being able to play as Valgas and Kraken on Power Stone 2 which could only be done on the PSP version.
It was really the ease of piracy and the PS2 that killed it. Windows CE was a double edged sword, because it's why it was so easy to develop and optimize for, but it also left it wide open.
Sega did it to themselves...just reading Console Wars really gives you perspective to the misstep after misstep that lead up to Dreamcast. Still my favorite system ever.
@@SotNist the windows version had nothing to do with it to start. You could literally burn the games and play them there was no disc or software protection implemented. It released around the same time CD burners became super inexpensive and common as the alternative was zip disks and expensive standalone hard drives or floppy. Windows ce has no user/file rights besides hide and read only but without user rights like Unix anyone could change even those 2 things
Games which utilized the Windows CE and DIrect X SDK option had the operating system on the disc. I think it was designed to be receptive with this in mind, and ended up just being completely wide open to boot discs and ISO's because of it.
mushy, you're wrong. There was copy protection (obviously), it was just relatively easy to bypass it. The reason why you can play burned discs on unmodded systems is that the "program," or whatever you call it, is already on those ISOs you download from the net.
Capcom invested a lot on the dreamcast cuz it was the closest hardware to arcades back in the day. The Dreamcast architecture was close or identical to the Naomi arcade boards that capcom had used for their own games such as: Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Project Justice and Power Stone. It was reasonably simple to port. They also released updated versions of games. Plasma Sword (Star Gladiator 2) and Tech Romancer in arcades ran on a PS1 based arcade board, yet they got amped up releases on Dreamcast with reworked models and effects. The Dreamcast was also the only system at the time that could properly handle CPS3 games such as Warzard/Red Earth, SFIII and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
I wondered why Capcom supported the DC. Back during it's self life, I thought they wanted to merge with Sega. Shame Red Earth never got a home release.
See... that's the part i don't get. Why pay hundreds for 3rd Strike, JoJo, Gigawing2, etc. when you can buy a $10 clip and easily play the arcade originals minus the DC's loading times but plus the unported ones like Red Earth + Strider 2 on basically any mobile with Mame4droid and just hook up your XBone/PS4/Pro-Pad via Bluetooth ? It's like getting a NeoGeo CD game when you already have free lifetime access to the original Arcade Board... ? Get the system's exclusives ? Absolutely. Get the overpriced multi-system releases too ? If money is not an issue, why would I blame you ? But if you're on a budget it can can save you lots amounts of money if you purchase them on either another system (e.g. Gamecube) or if you look up the games on Steam first. Even system exclusives from way back then tend to pop up there sooner or later (thinking of Crimson Skies and Fable on the 1st Xbox for example)
@@chrislaivier8459 for some people it isn't a matter of accessibility. I mean. Anybody can get an emulator and run the games. But collectors like having and owning the real deal, specially if it's a piece of history or something that really has personal investment. Sometimes it's not about being able to play it, even. It's a phenomenon akin to art and collectibles. Some are into the feeling of having something rare, something limited, something that doesn't exist anymore, the item gets a mystique to it as if it's an artifact.
I bought it new back in the days. Survival Horror buff here. Really wanted to love it. Couldn't figure it out, dismissed it as trash, traded it back in to EB for something else. Or maybe I just got cash back to buy a bag of weed or something (you could do that back then). Around 2005-ish I read a positive review on it on the net somewhere, and was just getting back into Dreamcast, so I scooped it back up on eBay. It was so long ago I don't remember what I paid, but I know I didn't pay anymore than $20 for it. Figured out the mechanics, played through it, and beat it. A cool, fun, unique game that suffers from some broken and clunky mechanics here and there that make the experience more frustrating than it needed to be. But there's nothing else like it, and it's definitely better than Blue Stinger. I'm glad I gave it another shot, and glad I got a copy long before the prices for everything got stupid.
The demise of Sega after the Dreamcast is like an unhealing wound for me.. when it came out back in 99’ i bought one day 1 and I convinced my two best friends to buy a console each so the 3 of us would play these games to death, usually having all weekend gaming marathons. Phantasy Star, sonic adventure, RE code Veronica, house of the dead, shenmue, project justice & powerstone were all amazing games that blew us away. There’s just so many fun games on the DC! After Sega called it quits a part of me died. I stupidly traded in my old consoles and library of games but after 2008 I stopped and have now amassed a pretty sweet collection. The Dreamcast will always have a place in my heart.
Beautiful comment. I felt every word you said. My Dreamcast experience was very different, but the console still has a special place in my heart. I'm from Germany and the sad thing was, that I missed the release of the DC completely. Not sure, if it generally was like this in Germany, but at least in my small town, this console was nowhere to be found. No advertisements and nobody was selling it. The other thing was, I lost interest in gaming back then and didn't read any magazines anymore. Many other stuff was going on in my life. So I discovered the DC much later - and fell in love with it. It's probably one of the best consoles of its era and even today it offers lots of fun. The saddest thing perhaps is to think of all the potential that was wasted when they discontinued the DC much too early. Like with many consoles some of the best games are released in the later years, when developers are already experienced enough to use the full capacaties of the hardware. Sadly that never happened for the DC. But still I have the feeling, that especially in recent years, the DC fanbase is growing even more. So at least it'll live on for this loyal fanbase and will not be forgotten. Greetings from Germany :)
The Dreamcast was one of those consoles that I wish I took more seriously when it was released. There are so many great games I've missed out on. I could say the same thing about the Saturn as well haha. I sold my original and regretted ever since. I did end up picking up a second one a few years back with Sonic Adventure and Sword of the Berserk (fun game by the way!) and I'm definitely glad I have it in my collection. Now I just need to tighten my belt and start working on a more respectable game library for it. :)
I never knew anyone who had a Saturn or a Dreamcast, did once see a Dreamcast at a car boot sale but wasn't collecting then so didn't buy it, probably a mistake, haven't even seen a Dreamcast game for sale locally for years.
@@dutchgray86 It's the same here. I very rarely see Deamcast or Saturn games in the wild and when I do it's something like NHL 97 or Madden 98. Maybe I just need to go to more convention!
The phrase “The man, the myth, the legend” is so overused and often hyperbole. However, this is not one of those times. John Hancock is truly a legend in the game collecting community.
which jojo anime series did you like better? phantom blood/battle tendency with Hamon techniques, or Stardust Crusaders with the use of stands? I think i'm in the minority that i actually prefer the first season with the stone mask, fighting a sudo vampire-like dio and then the Pillar Men.
@@tritian5874 i'm a big fan of young Joseph joestar, the hamon for me has great movements and this part has the mostrar of one of my favorite thing in the series, the poses someone are so ridiculous than i cant stop to laugh anuncios example of this is the first apparition of the pilar men, later when araki introduces the stands i think he loses his mind a little bit but the series continues being great
FYI guys Shenmue comes with 4 discs (3 game discs and passport disc), Shenmue Collectors version comes with 5 discs (3 game discs, passport disc and soundtrack disc). I have them all. Completed my Dreamcast set a few years ago. Thanks
I only got the rare games by chance by importing direct from Japanese ebay during the crash there. But you missed the more expensive games: border down, zero gunner, cosmic smash.
I am happy with the fact that I have absolutely no desire to collect games that I don't find really fun. Like I would never spend money on that sonic version because it's a shitty half finished game that I would never play. If I had to have every game that just so happened to be rare I don't think the hobby would be much fun
I found a old copy of Illbleed in my house and thought it was a cheap game because I had never heard of it, then I looked up the game and realized I had struck gold
Same thing happened to me with Hagane for the snes. I was watching his video on collectible snes games a long long time ago and thought, wait I've seen that game before. After digging, sure enough it was there haha.
I have a couple of these games. But what I think is my rarest piece is a Dreamcast binder that would of been given to shareholders. It talks about the features, release, and future of the Dreamcast among other things.
I bought Phantasy Star Online from a seller at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo which was supposed to come with a Sonic Adventure 2 demo on a second disc. To my surprise when I got home and opened the case there was no SA2 demo, instead a mint copy of Tech Romancer was in there and I only paid $8 for Phantasy Star. I still have no case or instructions for it but I'm always on the hunt for it.
I'm literally just down to cannon spike and project justice for my dreamcast collection. But both so stupidly expensive I'm prob just gonna have to pass. Damn food!
I think I might have a couple copies on canon spike I'm gonna try to find them and if I do I'll send it to you it means nothing to me but I can imagine what a full set would mean to you. It might take me a bit but i will come back and comment again if i find them.
@@travishowells4644 oh wow thank you. If you could then I would be in your debt forever haha. But seriously that is a truly generous offer thank you. These last few games that I need are getting hard to find and pricey, but it's been alot of fun tracking down the rest of the collection (admittedly with some headaches along the way).
I bought Cannon Spike back in the day for retail price and practically gave it away to a nephew some years later. When I realized what I had done, again some years later, I tried getting it back but alas he got rid of it...
I think that Capcom were using Sega's Naomi board for some of their arcade ports which was basically a Dreamcast with extra rom, so it was easy to port their titles to Dreamcast. Even with stuff using Capcom's own hardware would have been easy to port too because of their working knowledge of the Naomi's/Dreamcast's hardware.
I bought at a local gamestore about 3 months ago a factory sealed "Project Gotham Racing" for $20 as a gift to my cousin. Turns out it was worth something like $70 for prices I saw online.
The only game in this video that I have is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I got it for free from Capcom cause I was working at a Anime store and I was the only employee that had a Dreamcast. They sent it to me to try it out and they let me keep it.
I bought from my local gamestore a few months ago a Factory sealed copy of Metropolis Street Racer for $20 for a gift to a cousin. Had I known better, it could've been worth about $60, but he at least enjoys the game since he's a racing gamer.
I have a mame cabinet and played the hell out of Mars Matrix when I stumbled across it. Had no clue it was ported to Dreamcast, very solid shooter with fun mechanics.
I hope one day you collaborate with The Last Gamer for one of these videos, since he has a very expansive collection and knowledge I bet it would be pretty interesting well besides the hate that the video would probably get.
No, hes still doin youtube, hes in middle of building his dream arcade at his house, so hes not doin regular videos, just once a week or 2 weeks he puts a home improvement video showing the progress of it, man the things id do to have half that dudes collection, let alone his arcade collection
Knowing my love for the dreamcast my wife scored some games (from a thrift store)awhile back for it, and being without a dreamcast (my original launch edition was stolen) I just set the titles away on a shelf.. Having just picked up another dreamcast the other day I have been playing the games I still had when I looked on the shelf.. and behold.. Speed Devils "Clean cover" edition complete.. case is a bit busted up though..
I never had a Dreamcast, but a friend of mine did. There was a game I got to play just once. I don’t remember the name. All I can remember is that the protagonist was dragging around his sword it was so big.
I lucked out, I bought Power Stone 2, Cannon Spike, and Tech Romancer back in the day when I first bought the Dreamcast. So glad I don't have to pay these inflated prices to enjoy these great games!
I found power stone 2 at a flea market for 50 cents… I couldn’t believe it, it was in a box full of music cds and the guy that sold it to me must have thought it was worthless
The one game I have from this list is giga wing 2. I lucked out a couple years ago and found it at a local game store. The most I’ve ever paid for any video game by far but I still got it for way less than what it goes for on eBay. The rarest game I own for any console. I love collecting for the Dreamcast.
this was a great video but its also a sad video because it basically without trying shows you just how awesome and creative a game company could be when production cost were lower no one was whining at them and there were a lot less restrictions as to what they were allowed to do. capcom you were such an amazing company and in some ways still are but now it feels like it all comes down to "were only gonna do it if were totally sure its gonna bringing big profits" which is understandable because this is how they make there living ..... just kinda sad same time. was so happy when they started doing re releases of mega man collections and announced mm11 at same time a while back they did that dark stalkers remastered collection saying if it did well wed get a new darkstalkers ....... well it made profit but they wanted massive profit so never ended up happening :\ capcom give me my new darkstalkers and start revisiting ideas like you did back in dreamcast days :p new power stone would be nice ahahaha. sorry for the little rant everyone i just over react sometimes when its something i love and wold love to see more of.
I Trust in Capcom to be very patient. I mean they are holding on to so many great games which are essentially done, like Megaman Legends 3 or Megaman Universe, but *they needed to wait until Comcept would fail so they could announce Megaman 11* and reignite the francise. *Also Devil May Cry will be getting a part 5 now after the reboot ranting finally calmed down and fans are willing to accept a new title.* Capcom needs to “stay alive“ somehow but they are still doing great stuff, but for some things you need to be very patient as the community might eat you alive if you rush a highly desired game...
I have JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, didn't know it was rare. I really love Mars Matrix, but only own a burned copy. I was also really surprised to find out that there was a Power Stone 2 & I didn't own it! I got really into Dreamcast in the mid 2000's & loved playing Power Stone with friends. Guess I missed out on the second one :(
Dang, i bought Tech romancer when i was little at my local mall just because I thought it looked cool. Had no idea it was a rare game. Probably paid $20-$30 for it brand new in the 90's
I have project justice, you should also mention (Sword of the berserk) which is an amazing game, also there was an early release gundam game for the dreamcast which was awesome
We're working on a complete North American collection including all the variants :) fortunately we have all the games shown except Mars Matrix! The Dreamcast is truly a great underrated system with awesome games.
I'm probably getting this a bit wrong, but I remember Sega's NAOMI 2 board was essentially Dreamcast guts with some extra bells and whistles. That might be why there were so many Capcom arcade ports.
Naomi 2 was 2 Dreamcasts, very few games used it (F355 challenge did for the three-screen surround) but the original Naomi was just a Dreamcast with no bells or whistles and what all those Capcom games except JoJo (CPS II) and most Sega arcade games of the time were made for. That is why they are identical to the arcade versions, its basically the difference between a NEO-GEO AES and a NEO-GEO CD. i.e., there isn't one minus it being on a CD.
Glad I already got most of what I want in my collection. Looked into Cannon Spike a while ago cause I'm a fan of Capcom IP's and this one passed under my radar back in the day but it's just too short for how much it costs.
It's really amazing, how fast the DC has gotten expensive over the last few years, I'm glad I completed my full (PAL) set years ago, then I started hunting for all the stuff that was US only, and then some Japanese stuff...it sorta got out of hand since then: Japanese limited editions with all sorta extra crap in the boxes, clothing, promo material, etc ...you name it LoL. It's awesome how much variants and other weird DC related stuff Sega released in that period, sorta like they knew they were going to lose anyway, but wanted to go out with a bang...another great vid guys, keep it up
Jason, I love your videon, but PLEASE stop making thoes videos. People know that those games are sooooo expensive, you're just making them more expensive because people will but those games after your videos and make them more expensive so pleeease stop making those yideos! Keep on making videos, love your channel, really!!!
Don’t know how rare they are but I have promotional copies of Dead or Alive 2 and Quake 3, both come on plain white discs with blue writing. Not sure where Dead or Alive came from but got the Quake 3 disc a couple of years ago on amazon
Back in 2000, you could just see the writing was on the wall for Sega. I picked up a Dreamcast cheap, and loved it. Went all in with picking up games, assuming they'd be hard to find later. I have a great collection of games, and several of the games mentioned in this video. Good stuff!
Project Justice and Illbleed are two of my favorite Dreamcast titles I own for the system. I got Justice from a friend for free many years ago because I would always ask him to bring it over for a play lol. As for Illbleed, I remember picking that game up for 20 dollars in a bargain bin and just loving it. I also remember seeing nothing but a wall of JoJo for Playstation and Dreamcast back in the day for 20 bucks, seemed like nobody wanted the game back then.
Interesting that this went up now bc just the other day I was looking to get a new copy of RE2 on the DC (thats the version I owned back in the day)and I had no idea how expensive it is, even though its on every other console at the time. It can go for 60 to 100 dollars. I'm guessing the rareity of it made it cost more than the ps1 version.
Its because its the best version to have, supports 480p and I think is 60fps instead of 30 on PS1. Making it more desirable to own because its better. Same reason GTA III is usually more expensive on X-Box than PS2. Resi 3 is cheaper though because the Gamecube version is seen as the best because its easier to get a 480p signal from it on a modern TV.
I have a PAL collection, but I own the US versions of Cannon Spike and Illbleed and I have a Japanese Ikaruga. I suppose my rarest PAL game is Bangai-O.
I got JoJo for a few bucks at a thrift store many years ago. Back when I got it it was worth about $30 complete and now it's almost tripled in value. Pff.
I just looked and I got Shenmue: Limited Edition. I knew that i had the game but didn't know that I had the limited edition. I still haven't played it yet. I got to many games in my collation, but it's next on my list. Love the Dreamcast.
Capcom released such a wealth of great games on DC that have never seen a much-needed console rerelease! I have Powerstone 2 on PSP but I would love to get my hands on Cannon Spike, Project Justice, & IllBleed.
What a crazy video for me: first game "wow this is my most played childhood game i love it!" Second game "whut this is my second most played childhood game!!" Third game "DUDE, what is happening, i still play this game even last week everyday.." I guess i had a good childhood :-) .
Is it the greedy side of me that likes these videos? On the other end i really hate how shmups and fighters end up on collector shelves just bc they are low print games..
SPEED DEVILS IS RARE?! :D SWEET! I was about to comment and Tell Metal Jesus to check it out. One of my favorite Racing games on the Dreamcast. But I'm happy he does know about it. I still have my copy from when I was a kid :)
I wish Capcom would hire Housemarque to make a new Cannon Spike game, full twin stick shooter style since control schemes are better for it nowadays. Ah well, Housemarque retired from arcade style games anyway :(
I still want Canon Spike! Back in the day, I was going to buy that game, but I decided not to. I thought the price was going to go down, the price stayed the same, and eventually stores stopped selling this game LOL I remember seeing it for $50 when first released. I do still have Power Stone 1 & 2! :D I'm never selling those games! I think they released a Power Stone Collection on the PSP, right?
Luckily I was going through a shooter phase in the early 2000's and picked up Mars Matrix, GigaWing 1 and 2 and Gunbird 2 for my Dreamcast while they were affordable. I always wanted a copy of Tech Romancer, but it shot up in value by the time I got around to looking for it.
