The largest number of church bells in the city of Stuttgart, consisting of 13 bells, can be heard from the Russian Orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral. In addition to three bells from Russia, a historic bell from the Kurtz foundry and a modern peal from the Bachert foundry can be heard. According to Russian Orthodox tradition, the bells are not rung but played.
➥ The oldest bell in the peal dates back to when the church was built. It was cast by the Kurtz bell foundry in 1895 and fortunately survived all the turmoil and destruction of war.
After the extensive destruction of the church during the Second World War, three small bells were donated to the parish from Russia. Today they are the smallest of the bells and all hang on the small bell wall.
Finally, in 1997, the church received new bells. The Bachert foundry in Heilbronn produced nine bells in a progressive shape.
After the first system installed did not work that well, the system was revised some time ago and adapted to the requirements of the congregation. The traditional ringing of the bells is now performed by various members of the congregation.
