We have BIG news, Loyal Theorist! We conducted the world’s LARGEST color analysis in history just so we could prove the internet wrong. If you’ve explored the fashion and style vertical at all on RU-vid, Instagram, or TikTok, then you’ve likely seen the thousands of color season tests. (Btw, are you a winter, summer, autumn, or spring?) But how LEGIT are these color analyses? And do they REALLY affect how others see you? Let’s find out…

that would skew the data. the point of the background color changing is to see if the preferred color is determined by the “seasonal style” or the background color. It’s not an extraneous variable, it is the same as introducing a placebo into a pharmaceutical study, to see if the psychological aspect is carrying the self reported effect of the drug. If the appeal was mostly correlated with the background, and has little correlation with style, it would bury the idea of seasonal style. Instead what happened is they found that neither had a strong effect. They determined that it all came down to personal preferences.

I'm really curious about why you guys chose to change the background colours of the photos. As colours are viewed in combination with the colours around them, they play a big part, and I noticed some of the background colours sometimes made the subjects in their correct seasons look washed out, where it probably wouldn't have been the case if it was kept the same as the wrong season. From everything I know about art, I'd think a completely neutral grey for all backgrounds would be the best way to test the colours on the subjects. Many professional artists use grey-ish neutral background when creating character design and concept art for the exact that it gives the best idea of how the colours work together on their own without any interference of colours around their drawings. If you had a reason for not doing this, I would love to hear it! Also, as you mentioned the results might change if asked in other seasons, I hope this is something you will test out in the future! ^^

@FurvaNoctua
@FurvaNoctua 11 месяцев назад
@@DarthAxolotl I thought that might be the case, but it looks to me like the values weren't accounted for? Sorry if that's an incorrect assumption, I just see some big changes in the values of the background colours of a lot of the photo pairs. The background colours could be cool or warm, but have the same values, so that the contrasts in each image didn't differ as much. At 8:08 in the video, if you take all those images and turn them into black and white photos to see the values, there are some very clear contrast differences between the pictures put up against one another, and many of the wrong seasons seem to have an overall better contrast with the background colour, shirt colour and the subjects' skin tone, making for an overall more pleasing picture, which I would think would skewer the results. Which is why giving them the same grey background would ensure no extra variables that might cause some of the correct seasons to look more washed out.

Yeah, this was something I also thought about. I know my screen color balance is not perfect, because I have my laptop mirroring to my large-format monitor; they each show a different level of saturation, contrast, and white-balance, which changes with the lighting in the room. So, muted colors look drabber and are harder to differentiate. Red is a bastard of a color on screen, as is black, which drives my older monitor absolutely nuts. And it's all complicated by the blue light filtration on my glasses. What color are any of these, really? Who f-ing knows.
@NoahMiller13579
@NoahMiller13579 11 месяцев назад
There are factors I think you're overlooking. The big one is the background color, which wasn't consistent. There's also eye fatigue- I suspect you'll see a stronger preference for muted and darker colors in later questions. Some shirts were so saturated they didn't look real, so an uncanny valley effect might have been present too. There are also factors like the *type* of clothing the model was wearing. More formal shirts seemed to be darker shades and lower intensities, while t-shirts could be lighter and brighter.

One thing that bothered me about the photos was that photoshopped colors don't look the same as changing the color in real life. If you swap out a shirt in real life, the light bounces off that shirt and onto your skin, affecting the way your skin looks, but when you just swap the color of the shirt in photoshop, the reflected light stays the same. I honestly think the reflected light from colors near your face is what gives the biggest effect.

Like, I'm really fair... usually, but I've olive undertones, so certain greens will make me look minty or just downright sick! Oranges do the same. I can wear all the burgundy, olive, deep blues, jewel tones, and neutrals I want, as long as they aren't orange and bright Irish green! It makes sense that Gen Z tends to like muted colours more since we've been exposed to the internet on average a much larger portion of our life, so MUTED tones would seem more eye-catching. We're so used to everyone trying to attention-grab that we like the calm, mute colours a lot more.

I’m wondering how much was changed based on how much the image was edited/altered from its original picture. Let’s consider the idea that if you got all the models from the pictures and gave them actual copy’s of clothes at different saturated colors, the test results would be very different. The image would look better then the edited one because then the lighting is more accurate between the clothes, model, and background.

Personal colour preference definitely affects it. There were some where I chose the answer that I knew was not the colour-season-adjacent answer simply because I liked the colour better, especially with the darker greens and reds, which I chose occasionally over brighter ones even where the brighter ones would have been more suitable.

I also was planning on doing digital art/animation project where I will draw different types of body types and skin colors taking on different types of clothing and shades of color. I was like "if Color Seasons would really help find how to make you pop out more then creating a digital character should be great and easy to find the right colors to match what I wanted" but now I'm not sure... After watching: Ok maybe I can still do that plan (not here tho)

Did you guys account for the background colour in each of the pictures too? it seemed like the background color wasn't consistent between different photos of the same person, and I am curious about how that also has an affect on the responses since with some backgrounds there can be more or less contrast between the person's features as well as their clothes. I wsh you guys would share the data for these studies as the massive amount of participants and data could be helpful to others researching this who don't have your clout. I'm also going to echo everyone else saying to keep the background colors the same. Stick to one for everyone or you just included an unaccounted variable. I didn't take the survey but just pausing to look at my preferences before you told me the data had me realizing that certain background colors made some of the participants look more washed out or brightened them up and that affected what shirt color I chose. I was choosing to compensate for the background color more often then I'd preferred. Maybe re-do this one with that in mind as that seems to be a big factor that skewed the results.

I didn't even take the test and I thought it was weird that the backgrounds weren't consistent. It sounds like you unintentionally created a palette that skewed the results. I'm not sure how you did the color shifts. Was it because you used a layer mask? It's hard to imagine an option that wouldn't influence the viewer--even a neutral (black, white, gray) would still evoke a color combination. Were the color shifts in the background part of the season? If not, it seems like that was a huge variable.
