farther still, I shave after a swim in the pool and\or after hot sauna, easy as butter. I also know of the hot wet towel method, although I don't use it myself

I love shave soap. Used to use gels like gilette. But using soap allows me to use a brush to lift up the hairs. The soap feels better on my skin when it lathers. It feels better using soap and a brush. The gels always felt either too light or way too easy to wipe off when using my blade, leaving a too slick surface.

Safety Razors also go so much better with a proper brush and lather. It turns that 20 min from a chore to a luxury. That to me is priceless.

As a safety razor fanboy and connoisseur (I shave with one every day), this video made me almost poke my eyeballs out with needles. The bad form, zero prep, fearmongering, and the overall ignorance... Like you said, a proper shave brush, bowl, lather, and technique makes the safety razor both superior and luxurious.

Biggest problem I see with everyone using the safety razor is they're putting way too much pressure on it. You start getting irritation and nicks when you're pushing it into your face. You just need to glide it along letting the weight of the razor do the work. That's why they're usually so hefty. When I shave I'm usually holding the razor by the last inch or so of the handle.

It is because they are used to disposable razors which need some pressure or they wont shave you at all.

The weight of the handle helps glide it through, which takes a little bit of getting used to, especially if you're used to very lightweight disposable razors.

If they go for a particularly higher end safety razor, that problem actually gets pretty well solved just by the engineering of the product. Something like Henson's safety razor.

I'd love to see a companion episode to this for leg/underarm shaving with the same perimeters. I personally like the cheap razors, but i know women in my life who hate them, so im curious if the results would be similar to these tests or different.

@gloomy_gal I use both electric and the dollar store ones. The electric is great for the long hair if you let it grow out like I do (because I shave if I know I'm gonna show leg at all), but it leaves like the stubble, even on the short hair setting. It's also nice since I don't have to get into the shower with it, so less warm/hot water used. The cheap razor I use to get the smooth finish, but I wouldn't use on long hair. Razor burn

God right? I was thinking about this as well. The legs have a lot more surface area and dull out the razor fairly fast. Then there was a comment i saw below about the difference between woman's and men's products with the price differences and performance.

One thing you missed is that safety razor blades are super versatile, you can buy a selection of 10 for low cost and figure out what works for your skin. Other options don't support that.

@@tastybrownie7448you have the highest chance of cutting yourself while inserting the blade into the razor, afterward depending on if its a comb design or not theres not really enough blade sticking out where it could actually cut deep. You may nick yourself but thats very surface level and will disappear, especially if you use an alum block to seal it

I would love a version of this episode for women because I desperatly want to know how to make shaving myself more efficent, so it doesn't take an hour or more to shave because I'm not shaving every day or every other day. Also I would love the episode to anwser how often should you shave and should you shave in the shower or bath or somewhere else. I know that this would be a lot of ground to cover, but I(and I belive many others) would find it extremely helpful and eye opening.

I would love to see them do an episode on this. Right now I use two different razors. One for my beard (yes, women can grow beards), and one for my legs/ other areas. I would love to see them do an episode on whether I really need two razors, in addition to all the great points @triaurorar3291 mentioned.

Pro tip: If you dry off the blades after you use them they last about 20 times as long as if you put them away wet. Most of the deterioration of razor blades is from microrust along the cutting edge from water being left on them.

if you clean it with alcohol after a shave, it displaces the water better and will make that like a 30-35 times longer instead :)

@@ablaze1989 Yep, but it's gotta be near pure alcohol. I've tried leaving the razor in the alcohol to see what happens, apparently that %2 water in the solution is more than enough to cause rust. Also, safety razor is way way easier to dry. Just roll it in a toilet paper and dry in a second. Gilette one just doesn't dry at all. It is so expensive that I've tried using a hair dryer to dry it, even that takes like 3 minutes to dry the razor completely.

@@TexasNationalist1836 my wife has PCOS, and she can't grow a beard. It never gets that thick. Her hair is more of a peach fuzz that grows everywhere then the regular kind of facial hair you see on men. It's def an issue that bothers her so she shaves a lot, but it never actually grows like fully beyond a certain point. If she didn't shave at all, her facial hair would become noticeable. But it's not anywhere as thick as mine gets. That said, not everyone with PCOS has the same exact condition. Can only speak for what I know.

Just in case it gets seen, I switched over to safety razors many years ago with no regrets, and have recently started learning the whole song and dance of a straight razor. it's not that a straight razor is difficult to use, I think it's more just learning to maintain the sort of everything behind it. Most other razors sort of give you the angle of attack to use by nature of their design, and a straight razor you have to learn about how to maintain an angle, or at least a relatively tight range of angles. It's by far the fastest method by which I can shave, by far the fastest clean up, but has lost me the most blood learning.

I have a few straight razors but it's slow risky work - a DE safety razor gives a great result especially if you practice enough to very rarely have cuts.

Agreed on the straight. I like it for the precision and clean lines it gives over a cartridge or DE. Def shed some blood on that learning curve though and still do on rare occasion when I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing.

If anyone is struggling with their downstairs area I recommend waxing using a Himalayan salt scrub and la roche posay lipkar gentle body wash! I struggled for years buying all types of products but this simple routine cleared me :)

YES i was just about to ask this too! and i'd like to see some testing for remover of women's facial hair too (ik ik it's natural but i want to know how effective or safe each method is), because i've used a small electric razer for my upper lip hair (thanks genetics...), products like nair, tweezing, and waxing throughout my life and i've had varying success with each

Honestly a funny thing is, my father wasn’t able to grow proper facial hair until he was in his late twenties, and I immediately began growing a beard when I was like 17. He knows infinitely more about shaving and styling it than I do but he always complains how it doesn’t make any sense lol

Straight razor is by far my favorite. A properly stropped straight razor with properly applied cream after a steamed towel treatment, glides like butter through thick hair. It’s a process for sure but the only way I’ve found to have a shave without razor bumps all over

Same. I shave my head and face. Safety razors don’t work for me and the multiblades just yank at my beard hair. Japanese style straight razor has been the best for me. Best part is - I never have to replace the blade. Though I wanted to yell at the top of my lungs when he mentioned going to a barber who didn’t know how. Most of the barbers these days just have a one use blade fitted into a straight razor style holder - and it just doesn’t perform.

At my Walmart, Gillette's women's 3 blade WAS 10 dollars for 2 sets. Men's 5 blade for a set of FOUR? Seven Dollars. Men get a set of four 5-blade for $7, women get two 5-blade for 10 dollars. The only women's 5blade i could find was a different brand for 9 dollars for a set of 6. Anyways that Pink Tax is ROUGH. We get less blades for More Money. Men's 5 Blade is worth it, they last long and are really Gentle in sensitive areas.

@@emmerzleigh5540 I think Gillette is being very generous claiming those cartridges last 20 shaves. I think the realm math puts them WAY worse than the high end electric because the overpriced cartridges don't last much longer than disposables.

Matt, from my limited experience, using gel shaving creams causes the safety razors to gum and even not cut as nicely. I noticed more micro abrasions on my own face using gel. Using a real “shave soap” with a badger brush resolved this.

I shave my head with a foil razor, I’ve used rotary and after using the foul type, I’ll never go back. The foil razor is amazing, and it’s in a league of its own from the rotary ones. I use it with conditioner and it gives me a great head shave

Real shaving soap is the way to go. The gels leave a funny residue and don't smell as nice or feel as nice as a hot lather applied with a quality brush. Not to mention there are better scents with the real soaps like sandalwood or similar types.

I just use my body soap and I would love to see that tested, too. I know personally I love either the Gillette or a safety razor (I had SO MANY cuts on my legs in high school from using disposable razors 😂 ).

I always hated shaving and I used a five-bladed razor for most of my early life but I recently switched to a safety razor and it has completely changed my shaving experience for the better. I haven't gotten a single ingrown hair or nicked any bumps since the switch.

@@dude2410I use safety razor as well, in my experiente, with my type of skin, not using a shaving cream will make those shaving burns on me, never got the burns using cream. Buuuuut, IF you are going to try safety, I recomend watching some shaving tutorial on yt. Showed my brother my safety razor, the crazy guy used without prior knowledge and just got multiple cuts and burns

@@dude2410as someone who shaves with a safety razer every other day, ALWAYS use a shaving cream. It softens your hair, lubricates your skin for a smoother shave and doesn't leave your skin burning and red (as long as your skin doesn't react to the cream).

Safety razor user since I grew my first facial hair, and till the day I die. Wet shaving is such a pleasant and luxurious ritual every morning. There're a million different razor, blades, shaving creams, shaving soaps (old-school and modern artisan), pre/post shave products to explore and it's a fun journey. Also, watching them dry shave, hurts my face.

As a dude who’s face is so sensitive I’ll get razor burn from anything. I learned how to do the straight razor shave to myself for my cheek and chin lines and a single blade shaver for my neck. I have not had bad razor burn in years!

I was looking for a comment like this! The guy in the shop Matt mentioned probably did not sharpen his razor correctly or at all. When prepared and handled correctly, there is nothing that compares to a straight razor shave.

To my curly/coils hair friends (ESPCIALLY 4C hair), getting a close shave can be really risky because shaving curlier hair tends to increase your risk of ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis)! This is probably why AJ had the worst reaction to the cheap razor. So if you have curly/could hair, the best option is to avoid shaving. But if you have to shave, don’t try to get a super close shave, use a shaving cream or gel, shave with the grain, and periodically exfoliate! Salicylic acid can also help prevent your pores from clogging up.

Dear Mat, my groupmate and I in chemical engineering class were discussing anti aging creams, and she told me that a professor had told her is that what anti aging creams basically do is cause a mild allergic reaction to the skin which makes it swell and thus makes the wrinkles dissapear. Also nice to mention that the safety handle is way better for the environment. I did a research investigation on this for university. Regarding the sustainability of these products and basically the safety razor is almost entirely recyclable while every other kind of razor non electrical razor is very hard to recycle due to the adhesives and various materials used which would be a pain to separate.

None of these are remotely 'eco-friendly' or sustainable. The safety razor with its disposable steel blade uses massive quantities of coal in manufacturing, and are they recycled? Not very likely. The most sustainable would probably be beard, trim with scissors or something similar. Though personally I just use cheapo disposables way past their use period, it gets there eventually.

I have noticed one thing while shaving; a single blade is easier to keep clean, while multiple blades tend to collect hair and dead skin between them, making it harder to keep the blades clean and the shaving as effective.

My solution to this is rinsing the razor more often. It takes a little longer, but when I rinse it after each pass with the blade I tend not to get buildup between the blades.

Then again, that may have more to do with my skin type and facial hair then the razor itself; I just noted that a simple rinse is enough with a single blade but not with a compound blade.

So with a straight or safety razor, the technique is to pull your skin tight and shave, and avoid moving the razor back and forth. Because it's one sharp blade, it'll never pull, so shaving against the grain is fine. You are more likely to get ingrowns the smoother you cut it though, because you're pulling the hair out of your pores by pulling on the skin and then it goes back under the skin when you let go. If you're prone to ingrowns, it's likely your hair will curl instead of coming back out of the pore It's also just the cheapest. You can get 100 blades for $10. Learn once, find a blade you like, and you'll just have to order a couple times a year depending on how often you shave (less often because with better technique it's a much closer shave)

Safety razors have a big learning curve because the technique is very important along with findinbg the right aggression level for the head and the right blades for your skin, plus a quality shave soap. Once that's all dialed in they provide the best shave I've ever had.

Funny fact! I showed my mother this video for the funsies, and what I didn't expect was for her to call out the safety razor. As I had also noticed, it was the razor my grandfather used when he was alive, and I remember it specifically because it felt so heavy and intimidating to me. My mother was shocked that those razors were still around even in modern day. I guess we all just got really used to seeing him with his metallic ikea razor.

i'm slightly confused - aren't all of these blades (except the straight and electric) "Safety razors". The Mach 5 is just a 5 bladed safety razor. Im assuming by "Safety razor" you mean the specific old fashioned 2 bladed (or even single bladed) models? A safety razor is any razor that has a protective bit so you cant dig straight into your skin. The number of blades doesn't matter. They're still all safety razors.

When you shave it, you cut off the thinner tip leaving that thicker base HOWEVER this doesn't make the hair thicker, see hair growth is a weird thing, and since we constantly lose and replace hairs, even just a day or two after the shave your facial hair thickness is about the same as it was before the shave.

As someone who uses a straight razor I will say that once you get past the learning curve you get all of the benefits of the safety razor and some, I feel it gives more flexibility. Once you get comfortable with it the nicks go away, also aftershave is great for the look. Another thing not in consideration is that I shave AND keep my beard, I use my razor to keep my neck clean and the lines on my cheeks straight. So a tight shave is exactly what I want because I’m just cleaning up what I’ve got.

5-bladed cartridge for sure. Leg shaving is usually done against the grain, due to nobody wanting 5 o'clock shadow on their legs (and also just the mechanics of pulling the blade towards you being easier than pushing it away from you), and 5-bladed gives the closest shave with the least irritation and cuts. A cartridge also lasts longer than the manufacturer would have you believe, unless you are particularly hirsute, so it's not usually as expensive as shown here.

Same rules apply, so long as it's sharp you will get smooth, from there it's just a matter of comfort in use. I am tempted to recommend a safety razor because it's what I use on my face, and if you decide to use it just make sure to glide it across the skin, it shouldn't need any pressure (that's what the weight is for btw).

I use a Lord safety razon (I think this is just a me thing because of the video) because I can use it whith any pressure I want and there's never cuts or irritation, to the point in wich i can smack it agains my skin. My razor is the same brand as the blade, so maybe that's the issue for some, when I tried using a "better blade" or a "better razor" (not 2.50$) i accidentally nicked myself even while being careful.

you're using about 180 liters of water as opposed to about 40 liters on a shower. It's probably going to have its uses in the hygiene arsenal, as in, having the occasional bath might get you cleaner because of the amount of coverage and marinating of parts that usually don't get the cleaning. Being honest- with how bad razor burn is and how much it hurts the days after as hair’s growing back in (very tough and grabs everything). I don’t shave my legs. Just simple as that. It definitely would be interesting however if they took this to the other sec. Think it would be interesting to see if there’s a noticeable difference in skin and hair between the two, and what the general mood of them is (like the guys not liking the close shave even though society says its what they want)

I have been shaving for 25 years and I've used all types of blades, plenty of times. Something to consider here is that there are a few types of electric razer, I had the rotary style one and hated it and now I mainly use an oscillating side to side style. Another thing is that the electric style works best if you're shaving every day or every other day at most. If that's the case it's the fastest, easiest and most efficient. If I don't shave for 3 or more days then I'll typically use a blade since the longer hairs don't cooperate well with the electric style as well.

I use an electric shaver. The one I have has multiple attachments: one which cuts down the bigger, thicker hairs and the foils, which give a smoother shave. If I don't shave for like 2 weeks I would use the larger blade first. It takes like 2 minutes to cut everything down too, which is very nice.

What I do think is really interesting is the way shaving your legs works with women. By the way razors are made, you almost have to shave against the grain. Kinda hope this video was a set up for this next one Edit: Ok so my bad. I didn't mean that the women's razors were remarkably different in construction but in use. When shaving your face, you are taught to shave down (with exception) but with how razors are constructed, (how to razor fits in your hand) in shaving your legs you almost HAVE to shave against the grain. Razor burn, cuts, alergic reactions, angles (back of thigh comes to mind) may cause more issues in its inherent construction. Looking at something like an epilator, hair removal rock, and hair removal cream would be interesting in looking at its effects on the skin and hair removal.

What you're likely seeing is the difference in blade angles. Men's razors have a more aggressive blade angle to deal with more coarse beard hair. Subsequently, it tends to give a cleaner shave on the first pass. They also have smaller heads because the angles of facial features are sharper and harder to work around. This is, of course, assuming that we're comparing mens' facial hair razors to womens' body hair razors.

Different shaving creams are made for different razor styles. My shaving butter gums up a cartridge but works perfectly with a safety razer. Also having used all of these options I like the safety razer. The electric razer pulls hair and all the rest are too expensive for effectively the same end.

I like the 3-blade razors mostly for ease of access. No need to worry about angle and all that. As for the creams, yeah anything thicker than a foam is going to be a mess with the cartridges because there's not enough space for like the butter you use to get between the blades.. so you end up after like the first bit not being able to even shave with it. A safety razor is better there because it will scrape it all.

Speaking as a trans girl, I definitely feel the same. I've found that while shaving can help, there really isn't a way to completely get rid of that last little bit (especially as far as feel, but makeup can help). That said, laser is actually pretty reasonable for getting rid of the majority of the hair and thinning out the rest to make the shave far better. If you really dislike it and don't plan on growing a beard in the future, it might be worth considering!

I've had this conversation with my female friends. Safety razor is the way to go. Close shave and low cost. With the added real estate that needs grooming (legs), it's the undisputed winner. Downside is it takes more skill than some of the contoured swivel-headed disposables on the market.

The safety razor is the way to go. Cheaper in the long run and gives a closer shave. Just dont press too hard and let the weight of the razor do the work. All you need is patience to learn the angle. Once you get that down, you're set. If the blade don't cut or it tugs on the hair, change the blade bc its dull or find one that works better for longer.

I personally like keeping my beard BUT I love shaping it with a safety blade. it looks intentional and gives a nice contrast between my pale skin and the beard. That also means a single safety blade lasts me for a month since I just shave small portions of my face

One thing that wasn't mentioned is the after effects of the razor. Electric Razors and Safety Single Blade Razors aren't nearly as likely to give you ingrown hairs. However, once you start looking at razors like the disposable or Fusion5, you can see that the razor actually cuts too deep and causes the hair to grow back ingrown instead of straight

@@fs5866 Generally, men's and women's razors are designed to solve different problems. Men's razors are made to be better at cutting (mostly accomplished by having the blade at a different angle), as men mostly shave their beard and beard hair is thicker than most other body hair. On the other hand, women's razors are designed to be gentle on the skin (mostly achieved by adding more/better moisturising strips to the head) as women tend to shave a larger area and so avoiding skin irritation is more important. Further, women's razors are designed to more easily shave harder to access areas, so their head is round and the handle is curved and it is also made for better grip when wet, as many women shave under the shower. In short, it can make sense for a man to buy a women's razor (e.g. if you also shave your chest) or for a woman to buy men's razors (e.g. if you have hard to shave hair or don't experience much skin inflammation and would like the cheaper option).

Men’s razors are designed to do small patches on the face, women’s razors are designed to deforest vast swaths of skin. Or as one of the women put it “men’s razors are hedge clippers, women’s razors are lawnmowers”. Anyway the men’s razors took more than an hour to do a job that women’s razors could do in minutes.

The thing about being clean shaven is that some careers require it for safety or aesthetic reasons. If you're in the military you need to figure out a way to shave every day without messing up your face. Safety razors definitely take the prize in cost and effectiveness.

When I joined the military and went to Basic Training, I had my grandfather's old safety razor, but I had never learned to use it. On that first inspection, I earned the nickname 'Chainsaw' for how my face looked. (Also, they took away the safety razor for the rest of the course ;) ).

Honestly, I would love to see this done again, but for the ladies and shaving legs and under arms. Cuz I know the guys don't want a close shave, but the ladies do. Personally, I'll always go for the men Razer cus the pink tax for the female version is more costly, and some don't shave as closely. And the worry of ingrown hair is another factor. So which is better: shaving, waxing, or lazering hair off and which is better for the long run. (Taking into account how many times you have to shave in comparison to waxing or lazering off before you start getting little hair stumbles). So many questions so many I wish could be answered. XD Either way, I love this video. Great job, guys. XD

Safety razor for me, I just wish I had used one earlier in life. Safety razor is cheap even if you want a new sharp blade every use. They cut through a lot of growth like a hot knife through butter, no clogging. You can get a quick shave or a slow close luxury shave with one as well. You have more control of your shave experience in every aspect.

I follow Sam's advice with shaving. Its dirt cheap and realtively easy to do. I havent had any issues with cutting myself before, but as I havent looked up any shaving techniques before I have irritated my face a few times. I didnt know I needed this video so badly.

Definitely a learning curve with safety razors. Not supposed to apply any pressure. So many interesting things that can change with safety razors. Different brands of blades are different levels of sharp, different handles have different agressiveness.

Follow up idea based on how my dad compared shaving: Alternatives to shaving cream! My dad swore that shaving in a hot shower or sauna provides basically the same benefits as shaving cream, or even better. And to be honest, I shave in the shower to this day. I wonder if a) the steam of the shower / sauna actually does reduce skin irritation or make shaving easier then a shaving cream and b) if the increased cost to my water bill is justifiable by the shaving product that I’m not purchasing. While we’re at it, let’s throw in shaving *oil*, which was recommended to me when I got an expensive shave and a haircut from a spa (who, by the way, masterfully shaved me with a straight razor, so there are professionals who can pull it off)

Well it makes a lot of sense! skin irritation and razor bumps oftentimes are caused by the pores being closed when shaving, so shaving under a hot shower, the steam would open your pores and make it so you don't get those

Hot water and steam allows the pore to expand, meaning the folicles that you're tugging on have more room to move and don't hurt nearly as much. In my experience shaving cream on the other hand does something else entirely, making the face and hair more slippery so only the hairs in an optimal angle get cut, and anything thats too parallel don't get caught onto the blade as easily.

beard oil is for the skin, not the beard, kinda like a moisturizer and it does help with itching and dry skin issues as the beard hair pulls the oils out of your skin beard shampoo and conditioner is a thing, cleaning it is a no brainer (you kinda need to do it) and a conditioner helps it stay somewhat soft and easier to comb

safety razors might be about 15-18$ for 100 blades on amazon, but where i live the only safety razors i've ever seen sold at pharmacies are willonson sword blades which go for about 10$ for 5 blades! 🤯

That only applies when you're just pressing it and holding it still. You're dragging it across your face, so more blades means more friction. If you have sensitive skin, more friction means more irritation.

Safety Razor and Straight Razors are very different but they both use a single blade... I recommend anyone to use a Straight one if they have the skills for it, it's a game changer in terms of beard line ups.

When I was still shaving, I quickly learned how to use the safety razor as well. Disposable razors would just clog up so quickly and I'd feel the need to toss them after little use. But another thing I'm surprised MatPat didn't include was any alternatives to typical shaving cream. The grand majority of what's in shaving cream is soap. It provides lubrication, but it also dries out the skin and created the market for aftershave. I would have liked to see them try out typical moisturizer or oil like jojoba and see how it compares. Yeah, it's not as easy to clean off, but at least you don't feel like you set yourself on fire.

do you tap the razor against the sink? Similar to how you see old school shaving in movies. That removes most of the clogging, then you just rinse out the rest. You can use them until the blade dulls if you do that.

I'm a girl so I shave my legs instead of my face. I use a butterfly safety razor which is much easier to change the blade. I like it because you get less ingrown hairs but multi blade razors are my second favorite bcs of the ease of use.

DE shaver here (Safety Razor). It looked like you used the Personna blades (based on the paper). They are higher end on the sharp scale, and will give you more weepers/nicks. Better to use a more forgiving blade like the Astra Green. The actual razor also contributes to the aggressiveness (gap/angle etc), so you need to find a beginners razor. From the very short sequences, I can see a lot of pressure being applied to your skin. This is a bad thing. You only want to use the weight of the razor to lean against your skin. It's better to have 2x super light passes, than a single pass with a little extra pressure. And the last thing is the soap. Don't use the canned/aerosolised foam. The propellants/chemicals do react to some peoples skin. Try find an old fashioned soap stick and use a brush. It also makes a better lather.

They are using Gillette King C. safety razor kit and the Gillette King C. razors, you can see the little box at 11:58. They are expensive and in my experience they get dull very fast, so it's certainly a single shave blade. Idk if they are much sharper at the start, but I did have more issues with them than the cheap generic ones.
