Oh and someone tell Bloch, Capezio etc collaborate with Pat McGrath or Fenty Beauty for brown colors for shoes, tights, and leotards. The b24-b27 are a good start but we need more

Rtw for dancers is like Rick Owens. I saw recently no one reached out to Janet Jackson for a sneaker collab. She and Chris Brown could sell out Capezio!!!!!

Let me just say that City Ballet can have her be the first black dewdrop and gives her soloist roles, but will not promote her yet!

Also the discourse on models modeling ballet style clothes - I don’t think anyone looks at a model in styled clothes and expects them to be the perfect expert on that inspired look. Meaning Bella wearing ballet inspired looks for a magazine is not something I would look with a magnifying glass to see if she’s doing it perfectly because that’s not the point, the point is fashion and style. And this is coming from a ballerina of 20 years (from age 6). I think the people that are usually offended are not seasoned ballerinas or people who had a phase of ballet because usually seasoned ballerinas know that some model in a magazine is just a model paid to show and perform for the artist being the camera and designers and sell the products

Yeah this conversation they are having really disappoints me. Dance Theatre of Harlem was a place where Black and Brown dancers were not othered. They created their own table rather than begging for a seat at a table that didn’t want them there . Until we stop looking at the world through the lens of White Supremacy we won’t get out of this toxic dynamic where we (Black people) are constantly trying to fight our way in. We need to create our own and stop placing so much value on things White People have created as measures of their worth. I almost don’t want to watch this anymore. Talk about being part of the problem… But I will persist because I want to support Black creators no matter what. 😫

This was an aside to the fashion conversation, so some really important players were definitely missed. Didn’t even get to gush about Lauren Anderson at Houston Ballet. I love Dance Theatre of Harlem, but we were talking about my lack of aspiration for NYCB specifically as a classically trained dancer. Back when I was dancing, DTH was on pause and didn’t come back until 2012 so apologies for not bringing up in the conversation. If they were around I would have auditioned there as a top priority having suffered in white spaces for a majority of my life.

It brings me joy to hear black woman talking about ballet and their experience. As a Balanchine momma, my daughter trains at PNB in Seattle, it’s my heart to talk about representation in ballet. Balanchine dancers have so much artistry, but Vaganova dancers are very technical. I also agree with @mobballet, about talking about the history of black dancers before us and how these companies came to be. The fact that still in 2024, black ballerinas are told to be grateful and are downplayed and looked over. There are still that are bullied and told they got a role, promotion, spot in an intensive because of their blackness. It’s never because of their talent which is frustrating. The fact that she is a pink tights girlie made me so sad. Black ballerinas were forced to wear pink for so long and when they had the option to wear skin tone, they fear being different and don’t dare to venture out. That’s like at MCB, they don’t allow skin tone options in the company or school. The SI, you can only wear them for a choreography class. Dancers are allowed to wear skin tone options for the audition but not at the school. I could go on for days about this, so I’ll stop!

Such interesting chat by two articulate and smart people. I’d love to hear thoughts on Dance Theatre of Harlem, Gaynor Minden - cheat yes or no, Covid and classes online etc. Also, Bella Hadid had a supreme level of competence in horse riding. I wonder how SHE would feel if a non-equestrian were modelling crossover wear for that. Our main London capezio shop has just moved premises. Smaller I believe. They do hardcore push their colour range though. I had two black ballet teachers at college. One French islander one Brazilian. One of them herself literally told me it’s less common to get totally straight legs that aren’t ‘sway forward’ as opposed to swayback in black dancers and it’s more common to get splayed out toes wrong for point. As a 16 year old kid who grew up in urban UK I was are you for real saying this ??? She literally said oh but Paris adores a single female black dancer after Josephine Baker and I was wtf that isn’t your only legacy! England has some amazing outreach programs to get particularly black boys into ballet. Since Carlos at the Royal it’s so on trend x thank you for this x

I think Dione should pitch Capezio on a capsule collection. I'm seeing t-shirts with the necks cut out and little Les Sylphides wings screenprinted on the back, black trash-bag shorts and baboushkas circa Gelsey Kirkland in the 70s, that could double as shawls for Don Quixote rehearsal. Then do a fashion editorial shoot / ad featuring ABT dancers, and maybe a couple from Alvin Ailey and Ballet Hispanico, and get pieces on ex-ballerina celebrities like Margaret Qualley, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Zoe Saldana to wear out and get photographed in. It sounds like I'm joking but I actually think it would be fun. And only an ex-ballet dancer who knows fashion can make balletcore happen the right way.

This is so interesting. It’s like I’m ease dropping into their conversation about the world of dance and ballet. Something I admired but could never afford. Like the guest says that she didnt consider city ballet bc she didn’t think it was possible. Growing up low income and with a single parent I always had interests like dance and ballet but didn’t think it was possible because it was expensive. And it never became a reality. But at least I can dress like a lil black ballerina.
