In this Unreal Fest Europe 2018 presentation, 3D/VFX artist Simon Trümpler discusses the interesting solutions for creating stylized fire, smoke and water (cascade, ripples) used in RiME by Tequila Works.
In addition to other topics, Simon shows how simple textures and UV-distortion make great stylized fire and why geometry in combination with normal-manipulation works great for stylized effects.

I love the honesty and simply how down-to-earth this guy is here. It truly brings out such a boost in self-motivation with game development. He also gives the credit where credit is due; he doesn't use the subject 'we' over and over, and states whom should take the credit for a particular item presented. He also states numerous of times when they basically had to "Run-n-gun" (Trial-n-Error) with the scripting - having put in several many hours worth of UE4 tutorials, the live tutorials in my opinion, are by a very far margin, the most valuable. There are always some troubleshooting steps involved when trying to form the scripting to function as intended, and I feel that really goes to show the overall practicality of game development.

Simon's suggestions on fake water reflection and depth fade was so simple yet so effective. Great video!

That's my favorite stylized water in UE4.

Fairly complex but at the same time very understandable technology, for a beginner tech artist to try to replicate. Which I am going to do!

really like his version of what he thought the water was doing vs the HUGE mess of nodes that it really was. lol

Impressive material work! Particularly interested in the Caustic setup :) 10/10
@Simonschreibt

The caustics are a less complicated step compared to some other crazy things Pablo did with the water :D I hope the material helps you to get all information you need.

Yeah for sure, it's a solid looking setup. Sometimes it's just those little things that slip my mind hey! I spend alot of time on a pretty broad range of things, so it's awesome to see a video just bringing it back to just a few awesome shaders at a time. This is certainly a method I will be partaking in shortly :)

Thanks, good to hear that it was understandable. Especially for the water I had to go a littler faster and drop some details but I hoped it would still be useful. :)

Couldn't understand any of it. I wish there would be some good tutorials for UE. Existing ones are either incomplete, focus on a very small topic, outdated or not cover anything in detail. That water looked very good but by the time I understand any of how it was made, other people make complete games..

Like others have said I think this is a great talk but when he goes back and forth on the water part the video cuts to him presenting iso the actual presentation and it really annoyed me. Visuals like this are so important on a talk about shaders. :(

Wow! Amazing! I love the RIME visual! I'm a Unity user, and I used Unreal 4 for some learning. Not too much though. I'm always tempted to migrate to Unreal when I see something like that. I just don't like C++...

I miss these kind of talks. Today's talks feel like they're just being streamed from someones home via Zoom. Feels really out of touch.

I have a question: He seems to be german (His accent sounds like that), but Tequila Works in located in spain. Why is a german holding this presentation? (No offense I am german too, was just curious about it, because I hope to work in a gamestudio some day)

It's common for someone skilled in this field to work outside their native country. I'm sure this guy speaks Spanish very well on the job. :)

He also hosts a podcast with friends where they are talking about being an artist or a programer and such in the game industry. Most of the episodes are in german but some are also in english. They have many interesting topics and Simon also gives a nice inside in his job as a freelancer artist and how he works with Tequila Works. The Podcast can be found here: gamedevpodcast.de/ :)

Imagine this is your first Unreal week ever and you ended up here. That is me. It looks so nice and exactly how I want it for my game (later in a few years of course). but right now, I have no idea what he explained and how to even start approaching this art style....... Anybody can point me in a direction where to start?

The random cuts to the presenter, especially when he is explaining new stuff on the slide is not helpful at all...
