I love that you said "a donkey's years." I had an instructor from the UK that would say "in a donkey's age." You just reminded me of him.

Brings back memories of many a day (and plenty of late nights) spent with styrene + MEK in the Senior Industrial Design studio, working on prototype models for class critiques, back in the Uni daze. Various viscosities of CA glue and "zip kicker" were also regular go-tos. Ah, I can smell that "ethyl" now... and the xylene markers, Bondo, laquer, and all the various other things we all inhaled, working in the model shop back then.
@SidewaysKing75

The smells do invoke lots of memories you're right. It could be a lot worse than those around the model making scene couldn't it ! Thanks for commenting ;)

I've used both Evergreen and Plastruct for many years. The difference with Plastruct they have a lot more in the architectural shapes and other plastic materials such as ABS. I am not telling people to use Plastruct over Evergreen as I know that Plastruct is hard to find in a retail outlet but they do have a catalog. You can also find some of the more common card thicknesses in bulk on Ebay for a decent price. Styrene and balsa wood are great for scratch building just about anything. Thank you King as this is a very good primer for those that have never done this type of building.
@SidewaysKing75
@SidewaysKing75 5 лет назад
Thank you Richard, I didn't realise Plastruct made products in other plastics so that is useful thank you! It is hard to find in shops in the UK and is the reason I haven't used it much, in fact the only time I've picked any up was from a model show stand. I'll check the catalogue for sure now if there's more shapes. All the very best and as always thanks for watching and commenting :)

Nothing wrong with mixing in a bit of model making or kit bashing as part of your regular line up. I love Evergreen styrene sheets. The material is always of a consistent quality. I have used 'Plastruct' parts in the past, especially their 'I' beams, gantry work, and their domes, cylinders and rods - I used to enjoy making science fiction models and dioramas. Their products are very well produced, but not all components were styrene - some were ABS (the plastic LEGO is made of), Acrylic, or Butyrate. The only thing that would definitely fix all together, was, and is 'Plastic Weld'. Like MEK-pak, I must have used gallons of the stuff. And been made to swear at it too. I had come within a hair of finishing a little diorama based on the classic war movie 'Ice Cold In Alex', and accidentally knocked a not-quite shut bottle of 'Plastic Weld' over, causing it to pour all over the 1/76 Airfix Austin K2 Ambulance, reducing it to a pool of plastic slurry in minutes. Deep joy. I like to use Tamiya Extra Thin poly cement nowadays, and I'm very fond of 'Ratio/Wills' textured styrene - I've used tons of their 'Chequer Plate'. The boxes of styrene offcuts, and 'greeblies' from plastic kits that I stored in the loft, were the bane of my late father's life. "Why do you keep this stuff?" "It's going to be useful one day..." Thanks for sharing!
@SidewaysKing75
@SidewaysKing75 5 лет назад
Thanks, I love stories like this and our common love for the hobby. There's nothing worse than spilling the stuff everywhere, great for whats it for, but spill it and as you say it destroys everything in its path. I too would have been cursing all day and night with that! I didn't realise that Plastruct made products in other plastics too, interesting, I will take a look. Again the Ratio/Wills I haven't heard of so will take a look, thank you :)
@brianartillery
@brianartillery 5 лет назад
@@SidewaysKing75 - Thanks. Ratio/Wills make items for model railways. They sell packs of small styrene sheets to construct scratchbuilt buildings, etc. These sheets are of various kinds - planks, bricks, corrugated iron, etc. They're one of those things you look at, and think: 'Do I actually need this?' And then when you have it, you instantly can think of several uses. The 'Chequerplate' type most definitely.

Yes I think apart from your 'normal service' videos, this was the one many of us have been waiting for! Great explanation and demonstration of the styrene material usage. Your scratch builds like the Capri interior and Kool Kombi trailer bed show what can be achieved with a little bit of planning and understanding of the best styrene sections and profiles to use. I'm sure many of your subscribers would love to simply see your garage of cars with your comments on how they were created (Back to Hazard is a favourite mash up) as well as what you enjoyed or disliked when making them. Do you use polymer clay much? I've seen some of your earlier work such as the F150 modification and it would be super to see some of your more radical body changes in future videos (although I also appreciate how you preserve but uplift the original castings without major changes). As always, you surprise and inspire me each and every time. Keep doing and enjoying what you do! Art Per Day

Thank you very much for the comments I really enjoy reading them. I am planning another 'Time Machine' project so I can show how I did it on here and again with both the Kool Kombi and F150. Of all the original work I did they were the three I never filmed!! Without replicating them livery wise I was going to recreate them on here by alternating the uploads from old car restorations and newer mash-ups such as those three. I appreciate you watching and supporting what I do, it really means a lot.

Great video....just getting into Styrene work...hard to find around my area. Hobby shops here don't have it. Ordered from Evergreen. Thanks for adding your Styrene Diaries to your channel. I think they will be a great addition.

Cheers. As a Yorkshireman myself, I knew you definitely weren't a Lancy. To me, it was just a question of which end of the midlands. It's amazing how much the accents can change in a relatively little amount of distance. :-)

Hi Kyle buddy...... I don't know why that would be I didn't delete for sure. If there was any swearing, even in joke, the filters I have on the channel will block them..... Just in case kids are reading and all that. I did toy with the idea of a Vlog style diaries too with a walk through of my workshop and cars but I thought that would be a step too far for people to be disinterested.

Another great how to Video, I enjoy all you videos and have learned a lot. I am just getting back in to the hobby and trying to get the proper tools. I was hope that you could put a list of what you use. I like the look of the scalpel you are using, looks like it has some weight to it. What brand/Model? Thank you and keep them coming.
@SidewaysKing75
@SidewaysKing75 5 лет назад
Thank you Tom its appreciated. I was working on an Amazon list so people can have n idea of basic tools and advanced tools that I use and recommend. The Scalpel is a surgical scalpel doctors/surgeons use and are often found in Art shops. It does have some weight behind it you're right and is why I like it. It's not flimsy at all and must be at least 20 years old now. Here's something similar www.hobbycraft.co.uk/modelcraft-set-of-4-blades-scalpel-handle/568825-1000

Great video again, I want to do scale models but I’m in school and I have £30 to spend on buying the parts,so how much does styrene cost and how important is it compared to other things?
@SidewaysKing75
@SidewaysKing75 5 лет назад
The best bet when going to a model shop is they often sell a bag of off cuts and they work out rather cheap, approx. £10 and will have a variety of sheets and sections to get you going.

Quick question pal, i need to make a custom base for my bmw 2002 as i destroyed the original, what thickness sheet would yu recommend?
@SidewaysKing75
@SidewaysKing75 5 лет назад
I'd use 2mm if it's a flat base to keep it rigid myself. You could use thinner material if it was just going to be a show piece though and add extra strengthening points and make it part of the features if you want to replicate a replica chassis 😁

Hi Darren, the best place would now be Ebay or Amazon with this shutdown going on. Search for MEK and it will come up. There is a possibility model shops will still be doing online sales too.
