When my daughter was a little girl, she loved this song. Even when she got older, it would soothe her. She had many medical problems starting at age 4 with rheumatoid arthritis. She died in April 2019. So I cried through your song today, but it is mixed grief and joy. I’ll finish with her message. Bee Kind 💕🐝
So sorry for your loss. Losing a child has to be one of the hardest losses and you will never get over her passing but hopefully the beautiful memories you made together help you through the tough times.
Graduated high school in 1978 in Seattle. “Come sail away” was the theme song of our graduation ceremony, which was awesome! Such an appropriate tune for the occasion! Do yourself a favor and check out the title track from that album “The Grand Illusion” and “Fooling Yourself”(the angry young man). “Crystal Ball” is also a great one, and “Suite: Madam Blue”. Enjoy my friend! 🎸
Styx was my mother's favorite band. Thank's for the moment of nostalgia. A track of theirs that I personally love is "I'm Ok." From what I've read, the organ from the St James Cathedral in Chicago was used in the recording of that track.
No the song has nothing to do with aliens. Dennis himself said this when he, JY, John and Chuck were on Rockline back in '83... DDY said it was a song about hope, and remembering the dreams you had as a child/teenager...
They blow doors on Queeny which have about 4 songs that I think are good or great, Styx easily have a least a dozen songs that are good to great, in my opinion but I know I am not alone on this.
Ohmygosh the memories...... 💜 I saw Styx live for their Paradise Theater and Mr Roboto concert album tours and then about 15 years ago I saw them live a third time with REO Speedwagon and Survivor. Since then I’ve watched Tommy Shaw’s “Sing for the Day” which y’all ALL have GOT to see 💖💕❤️🎶
I have been to many concerts in my 57 years but the best all around sound, lights, stage and crowd was Styx Paradise Theater tour at the Cow Palace in San Francisco I was 15 years old I will never forget thousands of people singing this song together! The show started with Dennis DeYoung coming up through the stage playing his white grand piano.. I'm so glad I grew up during this time in music. I am enjoying reliving it though watching you discover it. 😀
The lyrics might go to a slightly weird place, but there is no way I can resist singing along with Dennis when this comes on in the car. It's irresistible.
What about that solo song by Dennis Deyoung where he goes back to his childhood home to see friends....can’t remember the name but the video is 80’s perfection...
Styx is magic. The music lures you to a restful place. Then BOOM BOOM BANG you’re up, wide awake, heart racing, body jumping and saying WHOA!!! Then maybe a slow restful part comes back in. You don’t trust it. You’re up still. You’re right. Here comes the Boom, Boom Bang again but you’re prepared for it. That’s Styx.
I don't know if this is a true story or not but a good story anyway. This guys on social media stated he was a fighter pilot in the desert storm. They played this song when they bombed Baghdad.
This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG!! I fell in love with Come Sail Away when it came out in 1977. Heard the album, The Grand Illusion and I became the biggest Styx fan!! They are STILL my favorite band. 💗
Sell it to our favorite music reactor by pointing out that Derringer got Weird Al on the track that led to Al's success. And I had the "All American Boy" album back in the day, but alas, I bought it on 8-track, so naturally within a year it got munched in the player. Tech is much better today than it was back then, though I still enjoy listening to vinyl, but that requires a decent turntable, which I also fortunately still own.
Stompie, his live version of Breakdown live sends goosebumps through me when the audience sings the first verse. Amazing!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qNxfPAF1frM.html
Styx ... brings back great memories. They had so many great tunes: Babe, Mr. Roboto, Lady, Lorelei (pronounced Laura Lye), Too Much Time On My Hands, Fooling Yourself, Crystal Ball, Show Me the Way ...
"Lady" is beautiful! It was from their second album... their only real hit until the 4th album, Equinox, when they exploded onto the international scene with "Suite Madam Blue"! They went back and re-issued Lady after they had made it big... ;-]
Love “Lady.” I’ve tried to explain there are many GREAT hits named “Lady” from totally different artist- Little River Band, (which I hope he gets to many of theirs) Kenny Rogers (which he’s done) and so on-
@Eric Furman yeah this is around the time of a lot of space/ufo themed things in popular culture. Boston, ELO etc had spaceships on their album covers, Star Wars,Close Encounters etc, Synthsesizers were just coming into their own as keyboardists were learning how to use them to make these sounds.
They were really pretty proggy, that was Dennis's influence. The other guys wanted to do more straight ahead rock. This is an amazing song. Synth solo is epic.
I grew up with this song in the 70's. I always loved it. The line"Some happy, some sad. I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had". Man, I think of the kids who didn't make it and get misty as hell. I love this song.
I got to see this live a couple of times but the best one was the Return to Paradise tour with both of my brothers. Hugging each other singing our brains out. Truly the best of times.
This is the hardest song to listen too. My sons Dad died unexpectedly, it took us a year to go see his grave. This song began playing as we were leaving. His dad had been in the Navy for 21 years. Loved to fish, take the kids out on his boat. We were all crying as we left. Still a great song. It was like he was telling us he was okay in heaven....
If you're going to talk about Atlanta Rhythm Section stuff, have a listen to The Best of Atlanta Rhythm Section-20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: Spooky
@@la196 Agree. Anything by ARS is a win to me. Grew up with my dad keeping me and my sister up at night playing Champagne Jam at least a few times a week. :)
@@Elway358 Absolutely, and you couldn't have put it better. All their work has a silky smooth groove! Always have enjoyed all their stuff:). Actually I've been working on learning the bass line to their version of Spooky, which is why I commented when you mentioned it:)
I just heard about Imaginary Lover speeded up sounds just like Stevie Nicks! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0aglgNC_7ZI.html I'd love to see Jamal do a bunch of ARS. Spooky is my favorite.
A friend of mine I was in the A.F. with used to jam with these guys before they became known as Styx.....and ctually this song came out while I was in basic training......lots of memories there.....Lackland A.F.B. San Antonio Tx...Peace Out Little Brother......
Can't help but smile at your "Dolphin sounds" comment. Amazing what you can do with an electronic synthesizer. That is Classic Rock from the good old days. Lots of love songs from that time.
Most of the bands I like best are the ones that had multiple songwriters and multiple lead vocalists in the band. I think that always contributed to having a wide variety of sounds and seemed to make most of those bands less one-dimensional and more rounded. Bands like Styx, Eagles, Beatles, Queen, Supertramp, KISS, The Band, Chicago.
Funny how music takes you on some amazing rides. As I started, I was with many of you going back to high school. Smiling. Then bam. This was my brother's favorite band. We would argue about it. He loved this type of music. Me more of the southern rock and heavier sounds. Smiling ear to ear. Great times! Man I need to send this reaction to Bert I begin to tell myself. Sorrow yet still smiling a bit, memory of extreme physical pain, shaking like a leaf, crying, as I am going thru colo-rectal cancer treatment when I get the csll. No this can't be, I was just talking to him the other day. Begging my wife to tell me it's not true. Alas, God had decided that Bert was needed in heaven. Seven years ago a couple of days before Memorial Day my older and only brother was called to Heaven. Thank you for these memories. The great, the good, the sad. These are what make each of us who we are. Believe me, you have just made a ordinary night better for this old man.
I feel you Ron. This one brings back memories of my best friend David. This was one of his favorites and for as long as I knew him he said he wanted me to sing this one at his funeral. When the day came a few short years ago, I was to overwhelmed to sing, but we did play it. So sorry for your loss, but glad you got to remember the memories. Me too. ❤
@@Crimsonams then you can understand that emotional ride I'm talking about that music takes you on. The sorrow is temporary as I will see my brother, and all my friends and family again.
Thank you both for the remarks. The sorrow is but one of the emotions I had, but I was trying to convey the emotional ride one can have listening to music. I have heard this song and others many times before. It was when I was watching Jamel's reaction that they all hit, which is what made it so great. He would have loved the reaction as much as we do. I wasn't trying to gain sympathy, as in the end the happiness is greater. I was really thanking Jamel for his hard work and great channel. Thank you
@@ronbertka7023 He's amazing, isn't he? Your comment just spoke to me as I was planning on commenting on the video myself and your story and the song had similar connotations with mine. That pure joy that registers on Jamel's face when he listens to a song just brings back so many great memories of the first time hearing it or something significant that happened in our lives that we associate with whatever he's listening to. I look forward to checking out his uploads every night when I get home from work.
Here we go styx one thing I absolutely love about them lately is they tour a lot and you can usually catch them on a three bill show obviously not this summer the last time I saw them it was styx foreigner and heart I mean I miss Dennis DeYoung but they still got Tommy
Would you please react to the group “Kansas”? We could certainly use “Song for America” during this crazy time, as well as, Carry On Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind, The Wall, Opus Insert, Portrait (He Knew), People of the Southwind. This is an amazing group with really good back story. Thanks for all you are doing during a time like this and pulling people together! Keep it up!!!!!!
This song always reminded me of my best friend growing up in the late 70's. We both loved Styx. Years later, when he was 35 years old, he hanged himself. Now, my eyes well up when I hear this song.
Hey, Jamel. I tried to turn my wife and my kids into Classic Rock, to no avail. It’s wonderful witnessing someone hearing classics for the first time. A willing someone, who recognizes the quality in the compositions and performances. I’ve enjoyed sharing your journey for the past year. Thanks for reacting to this music.
My son is turning 30 and says when I die he wants my album collection! He plays guitar to Santana, keyboards to ELO.....etc. His range in musical taste is vast and he has introduced me to great stuff I had not heard of! He is an old soul!
I was six years old when this song came out. It is literally the song which made me love music. . .I saved all the money I could scrounge from the sofa, the car or even begging for it to get this 45 when it first came out only to get it home to find out it was the short version, had to do it all over again to get the LP.
YOU deserve all the respect too. Breaking down genre barriers. And it shows in your face when you have that "AHAH!" moment. Can tell by looking that a lot of it is touching your soul. Stay blessed brother!
Tommy Shaw joined Styx on their 5th album and they skyrocketed at that point. Much of their early stuff was fantastic, too, but Tommy Shaw was another great songwriter to add to their mix. This is.a Dennis DeYoung song. Tommy, Dennis and JY each wrote lyrics and they would usually do lead vocals on their songs
Yeah, about 4:45, when Jamel started diggin' on the synth-"dolphin" sounds, knowing what was coming up after the second bridge, all I could think was "hold on....sh*ts about to get weird!"
Styx- more than just a great rock band. They are a cultural phenomenon in a way, getting references in movies and TV quite often. Where do you even start and, heck, where do you dare stop with the suggestions for their songs? My personal favorite song is the mega rock radio staple, "Foolin' Yourself". Enjoy the trip, Jamel! So fun to listen to!
I've always enjoyed this song, but like many other commentors, I have a difficult time not hearing Eric Cartman now. It is literally a struggle to tune out his voice when listening to the song now. T.T
I got to see these guys, twice back in 1978 & 1983, the first time was in a small arena and this song just echoed throught the building. The second time was in a slightly larger one for the "Kilroy was Here" tour.
Jamel_AKA_Jamal - 1970's Aerosmith - "Walking the Dog", "Lord of the Thighs", "SOS", "One Way Street", "Train Kept a Rollin", "Seasons of Wither", "Big Ten Inch" - I've heard Steven Tyler say Seasons of Wither is his favorite song they did. Its an amazingly haunting tune...definitely worth a listen and I so wanna see your reaction to some of their first recordings. Thank you for new favorite channel.
