Styx Too Much Time On My Hands is another great song, it came out during a bad auto manufacturing recession & everyone was laid off, we called it our states official song because of it ;o)
This song came off their album called "Kilroy Was Here", which was a concept album of sorts spearheaded by the group's singer and keyboardist, Dennis DeYoung. The album and resulting tour caused a lot of friction within the group and led to this classic lineup breaking up. Beautiful as always, Angela, keep up the good work! ;)
In an interview, Tommy Shaw said he wasn't into the rock opera direction because he wanted to be in a rock and roll band. Years later when he was in the Damn Yankees he made a joke in concert by starting and stopping "Lady" and DeYoung came out as offended. Tommy publicly apologized saying Lady was a great song and meant no disrespect but was playing to a hard rock audience, which most of us paying attention knew. Frankly, in my perception, DeYoung has done some great work but always came off as using his relationships to glorify himself. @@eppro2177 You may be right on. I first thought "Babe" then went with "Lady" from memory because it was such a hit written by DeYoung but you are probably correct, it was probably Babe,. good call. EPPRO, can't find the video now, scrubbed I suppose gonna play and enjoy "Babe" now... rock on
THATS MY ALL TIME SONG/GROUP!!! My generation the grandkids of WW2 Vets “get it”, I think…This was one of the first “Rock Operas”…Dennis DeYoung’s voice still unmatched today.
If you've not checked it out yet, you need to hear their song Renegade. It's much more of a conventional sounding song lol. Completely different vibe from this song but just as great!
By far, the best Styx song ever. It sticks in your mind FOREVER. By the way, Domo Arigato means Thank you very much in Japanese. My first Japanese ever learned, and now I am a simultaneous interpreter between Japanese and English LOL
I absolutely adore so many Styx songs! This one as well- I was in 6th or so grade when it came out- we roller skated to it a lot! I went out and bought the 45 vinyl record with left over allowance- So many don’t like it but it came out and I loved it- just the groove , etc.. it was a HUGE hit on the charts as well- I think the lyrics these days actually make more sense with everything going on... and I’ll leave that there.. so happy you did it!! “Renegade” is a must- as well as there song “Lady.” (Yes, there are quite a few hit songs titled Lady, and ALL are fantastic ! Kenny(I know you did that one) and Little River Band, and again Styx, etc..- all totally great! 💖👍✌️
"Show Me the Way" is an excellent song that's uplifting! Definitely check that one out! Then of course there are the classics "Babe", "Renegade", "Come Sail Away" etc...also this song gets A LOT of crap. It's been said to have been a major factor in breaking up the band from their original lead singer Dennis DeYoung. Also, that they had jumped the shark with it. Yet, if you listen to the lyrics.....Dennis was pretty spot on :)
I remember when this song was on the charts. It was huge at the time. Styx was trying to put out a concept album along the lines of what The Who did with their album "Tommy". "Kilroy Was Here" had only 2 hits. The band started to have problems in which direction it was headed.
Charming that her little robot dance actually was something that Dennis DeYoung did on stage while dressed as Kilroy hiding inside a robot suit, while performing this song!😎😎😎
The song was so popular back in the day, Angela. And you're right, it was weird even then. But very, very catchy! Great reaction, Angela! Here's to your next one! 🙏🙂💜
Kilroy was here is a meme[1] that became popular during World War II, typically seen in graffiti. Its origin is debated, but the phrase and the distinctive accompanying doodle became associated with GIs in the 1940s: a bald-headed man (sometimes depicted as having a few hairs) with a prominent nose peeking over a wall with his fingers clutching the wall.
It is weird, but I love it. Been a Styx fan for over 40 years and this song is very different than their normal sound. But I don't care what others think. I love this song.
✝️Maybe weird to you but your perspective doesn’t matter, The Truth does. It’s amazing, and although it’s different, it’s one of the most beautiful both songs and sounds I’ve ever heard. GODBLESS you all🤍!!!!!!!
even when it Appears you kinda don't get the song, you are such a Pretty Young Lady with a Killer Smile, it's still fun to watch your Video. Keep it up !!
As mentioned this was off a concept album (and you needed to see the short film they made and showed before their live concert to have some kind of idea of what was going on). It is not a typical song of theirs - even though they have a wide variety. I'd suggest "Come Sail Away" (album version or 1996 Return To Paradise video and not the "offical" video which is a cut-down MTV video and not the whole song). You also heard "Babe" which is a pure ballad and also not a typical one. "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "Fooling Yourself", "Lady", "Man In The Wilderness", "CASTLE WALLS", "Crystal Ball", "Clair De Lune/Ballerina", "Blue Collar Man", and "Pieces Of Eight" are some others - many more also.
My 4 year old loves this song. I explained the meaning of the song to him and how it fits into the concert experience and he just ignored me like a plate of broccoli.
This song/album is what caused STYX to part ways with Dennis DeYoung mostly because he wanted to get theatrical with everything. Both JY and Tommy Shaw hated this song but still have to play it during concerts to avoid riots. I saw this concert in Bezerkely and they started and ended with a video presentation. They're currently on tour with REO Speedwagon and Loverboy.😎😎😎
The song was performed live after the short film about the banning of rock n roll in the future. Kilroy was the main character who was arrested and imprisoned after performing an illegal concert. He broke out of prison after overpowering a Roboto guard and ran into Chance, a free-speech activist who was looking for him so they could start a revolution. The song was never intended to be released as a single, per Dennis DeYoung as it “didn’t make sense” on its own, however, it became their most well known song to this day and has been heard on commercials, movies and TV shows.
For those of us who are not listening for song structure, it is how a song makes us feel. Music is memories for most. Where were you and what were you doing when you first heard the song. Maybe you were doing something fun when the song came on. Maybe it was heard during a really happy time. Those memories are how we correlate the songs whether good or bad. This was a good memory for me.
I just ran into your channel and became a subscriber You've been reacting to most of my favorites. Love your reactions. Been watching your vids for about an hour or so. Keep it up! Cheers! 🥂
Two songs that go hand in hand by Styx 1. Your fooling yourself 2. Grand Illusion Welcome to the Grand illusion Come on in and see what's happening Pay the price, get your tickets for the show The stage is set, the band starts playing Suddenly your heart is pounding Wishing secretly you were a star But don't be fooled by the radio The TV or the magazines They show you photographs of how your life should be But they're just someone else's fantasy So if you think your life is complete confusion Because you never win the game Just remember that it's a grand illusion And deep inside we're all the same We're all the same So if you think your life is complete confusion Because your neighbors got it made Just remember that it's a grand illusion And deep inside we're all the same America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition Get yourself a brand new motor car Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on earth's this spell we're under We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are
It's funny that you say it's like a Broadway show. Dennis young the lead singer and creator of the song is a Broadway type of entertainer. The official video will show you what I mean. Dennis young loves to do theatrical rock and symphony orchestra rock . There's a back story to what the song is about.
Let me try to explain KILROY. During WWII a lot of pictures had been taken by Allied troops as they occupied cites and towns across Europe. In many of these places they found signs hand painted along the roads. All saying the same thing" KILROY WAS HERE". No one knows who KILROY was but he got too a whole lot of places before the rest of the troops did.lol
She blinded me with science and Mr Roboto were released at almost the same time during February/March 1983 although Thomas Dolby and Styx overall have a very different sound x
STYX was one of those awesome 80’s hair bands that you just turned it up to 11 (yes a Spinal Tap reference) . Please check out some of my favorites like Snowblind, Miss America, Suite Madame Blue and Man in the Wilderness. You won’t be disappointed!
Great albums like this don't exist anymore because of the death of vinyl. It's a story, a rock opera over two albums, kilroy was here and paradise theatre.
Think Terminator! This song was about how computers are taking over, so gradually that we don't even notice. And Kilroy was the example of the 80's of the ultimate robot that was so human that we didn't realize it was a robot. An upbeat warning of one possible future.😀😀😀
I would like you to check out 2112 by RUSH it however a whole side of one album however it is 17 mins long but it is a story and funny thing it really is about the time now... Another great song that is beloved is the TREE's also by RUSH... These styles of rock in the mid 70's to around 84ish are called rock ballets....
You would probably get more out of songs like this by reading lyrics. Many of their lyrics are cerebral and worth picking up on. The song is about how robots were starting to take over more factory jobs. At the time some people were concerned they would put a lot of people out of work. The Japanese were also buying a lot of US property at the time which had some people foolishly worried. Notice how this song has different sections and keeps you on your toes. Not the same verse, chorus structure of a typical pop song. So many of their albums are like this. They have a bit of prog, a bit of rock, a bit of metal and a bit of pop. Their early Wooden Nickel stuff is magical as far as I’m concerned.
The quirky... and forgotten Styx/DDY tune "Music Time", that charted the following year, is another that should be watched instead of just listened to. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lrj40kcz0rk.html
Song is great either way, but I feel to really get the song, you need to know the video version of it. If I remember right the "Broadway show" aspect of it was what tore the original band apart. I am sure someone will correct me if i am remembering wrong.
To understand the song and the album, you have to be familiar with what was going on at the time. Groups like the Jerry Falwell lead "Moral Majority" and the "Parents Music Resource Center" (PMRC) were trying to get certain songs and artists banned or at very least have their albums labeled as "inappropriate" because of the perceived meaning of lyrics, imagined "backwards masking" and other imagined moral difficiencies. Styx was one of the artists that was targeted by these groups. They claimed that on the song "Snowblind", there was backwards masking. The claim was that when the song was played backwards, you could make out the words "Oh Satan, move in our voices". This claim is false. The "Kilroy Was Here" album was a concept album that was the band's rebuttal to the false claims by these self-appointed groups of supposed moral superiority. In fact, they even included a purposely recorded backward masked message on the song "Heavy Metal Poisoning" that when played backwards says "Annuit Coeptis. Novus ordo seclorum.". This phrase is found on the great seal of the United States and can be seen on the back of any dollar bill. The lead character in the song, Kilroy, was a musician that was arrested and imprisoned by the "Majority for Musical Morality" (MMM). He was framed for murder. A young rebel named Jonathan Chance hacks into a MMM broadcast with a message for Kilroy of a growing rebellion against the MMM, which gives Kilroy the courage to disguise himself as one of the "Roboto" prison guards and escape the prison.
Weird is about right I suppose. This was when computerization was in its infancy, the takeover was on the horizon and no one knew how to feel about it or even to believe it. Bill Gates' Windows hadn't won yet, everything was in flux. I was in college, freshman English, and we all were assigned time on a single computer, very limited and had to sign in each time we had to use the computer. I ran out of time before the end of the semester. Had to pay a classmate to type my papers lol We didn't all know how to keyboard yet, never mind texting. So yeah, it was a weird time indeed.
I love romance I love to hear music touch my soul like love songs it's nothing wrong with the song just played it's just not my cup of tea but I listen to all kinds of music I wish you could play the song I think you really like it the artist named Prince Michael bubble and the song is home I thought you really would enjoy this one is very touching song thank you
Wow, another one of my suggestions got played! As I mentioned before, it's about the excess of technology and dehumanization of man and woman kind! Beware of Alexa and Siri and all the other AI's! Check out the song from the early 1970's "In The Year 2525! Let's keep it human!
Hey girl. May I introduce you to Mr Neal Young . Hey Hey my my.. heart of gold... old man... the needle damage done... he's one man a harmonica and a guitar.
Styx has a few GREAT songs I think you would like..... Don't Let it End from the same album as this Kilroy was Here, Babe, Come Sail Away, The Grand Illusion and my favorite Fallen Angel.
Indeed, you should check out the other songs these other people have mentioned......If I may add a few more Styx songs to the list, that would help you get a feel for what Styx style was before Kilroy........"Castle Walls"; "Jennifer"; "Suite Madame Blue"; "The Best Of Times"; "Queen Of Spades"; Witch Wolf"; "The Grove Of Englitine"......... And I suggest that if you listen to any more Styx music, that you make sure the performances are NOT with the current lineup. While the songs sung by members Tommy Shaw and James "JY" Young remain the same now or during the group's heyday, the songs that were originally sung by Dennis DeYoung do not sound the same with his "replacement" keyboardist Lawrence Gowan. Lawrence does a decent job. But the vocals/songs just aren't as good in my biased opinion.😎
If you liked this, you need to check out the pioneers of electronic music, Kraftwerk, who started in 1969. This Styx song reminds me of Kraftwerk’s The Robots. Probably their most successful and pop-friendly track was The Model but you may also like Radioactivity, Pocket Calculator or Trans-Europe Express. A word of warning, though. If you listen to Autobahn (I love it) the original version is 23 minutes long. Cheers, Angela.
The lead singer, producer and songwriter Dennis DeYoung often produced songs that had a grandiose style to them in the tradition of 1970s theatrical rock. After several years the rest of the band didn't feel as though they were getting any input into the songs so they broke up.
