Sub-Zero - A Visual History 

It warms my heart to know Max loves "Shredder" Sub-Zero as much as I do. To me, that is GRANDMASTER Sub-Zero. You get kidnapped by the Lin Kuei and they drag your tied up ass into a large room, they toss you to the ground and you look up...and THAT'S the guy who's sitting on the frozen throne.

The Mytholigies Sub-Zero is identical to the MK4 design because Kuai Liang is wearing his brothers clothes in honor of him. I actually dig it for that reason.

MK1 is surprisingly up there for me. It's simple, but I really dig it.

As someone who wants Shredder in Mortal Kombat more than any other guest character, I hope we get the Shred-Zero costume in MK1 so I can at least pretend I got my wish...

It's surprising they haven't used the iced mask that the first movie had, more. It's such a simple idea, but it fits really well.

Crazy Sub-Zero is the only character that has appeared in EVERY MK game

Something to note about both Sub Zero's is that they are Half Chinese/White, as they were originally born American but taken to the Lin Kuei when they were Kids. Hence why Kuai looks "White" in 3,DA, and X.

Deception Sub Zero is the absolute coolest he's ever looked, why hasn't Shredder been a guest character yet!?

Sub-Zero has always been my favorite character in MK. Being a TMNT fan, I loved his Deception outfit.

Watching Max’s series of these has definitely shown me that I’m the opposite of him when it comes to character design. He seems to often prefer what I would consider to be overdesigned and busy and I tend to prefer what I view as more simple and streamlined.

Subby's MK Deception "Shredder" Look is STILL the Best!

Tbh sub has my favorite design out of the Lin Kuei ninjas in mk1, it’s the shoulder pads that really do it for me. I think the shoulder pads actually being present and having shape that goes out makes it look a lot less like pajamas. Still love all the designs tho NRS did a great job.

Deception’s Shredder armor is his best look so far, with Kuai Liang’s MK9 look being my 2nd favorite. If he has to go maskless, his best is X with the beard and blank white eyes. My issue with the maskless look is I always prefer him with longer hair like how he looked in his end game cinematic in MK 2 and the MK Annihilation movie. I’m not the biggest fan of how Cyber looks, but I love his move set and how his Kori Blade looks. 

Here is the thing with the change with Sub Zero: the actor who played the ninja, Daniel Pensia l, was fired for using his character as Johnny Cage to promote a rival fighting character. Likewise, many people who play Subby in 2 dont believe the fact that he was Kuai Liang so to proof that 2's Sub Zero was not the same as 1, they gave him a big change to establish that this sub is not the same as bi han.

This series is so perfect. Taps into why I loved the old Rate The Kostume videos so much but takes a new angle by honing on the design progression rather than one game at a time. Sooo good. Some of the best content to come out of any MK hype cycle

Sub Zerro is my favorite design of the 3 Lin Kuei Ninjas in MK1. It's simple, but it's got enough extra details like the ice hands and the shoulder pads that make is stick out from Scorpion and and Smoke. It's the perfect blend of detail and simplicity

Fun fact! John Parish, the unmasked Kuai Liang actor in MK3 also played the roles of every other pallette swap ninja in UMK3!

Sub-Zero's "Shredder" costume in MK11 is the best he's ever looked!

Honestly Deception Sub-Zero was his most unique and awesome look imo and I am just happy they acknowledged its existance and added it in MK11.

The "Batman Ears" didn't come in MK4, they were actually around since MK1. The comic/character book art has the ears. The 1995 cartoon thing had them, I know some of the toys had them. They've always been there back then.

Mrgstar321's little rant on the alternate deception look is still hilarious. I'd say the deadly alliance masked alternate and the mk vs dc are my favorites. I dig the icy arms

I absolutely ADORE Injustice 2 Sub-Zero. Seriously almost tied with Deception Sub as my favorite design. Deception Sub is just too dope so i can’t quite put them even. But I loooove Injustice 2 Sub-Zero. He was also my main in that game.

I always go fancy on the mask/helmet when I draw the MK ninjas, besides color its the one thing that gives ninja some personality before adding a bunch of armor. Love deadly alliance design with frozen arms but the Shreader Sub blow me away back then

Really interested to see how their tackling Kustomization in MK1. Everyone's looking pretty good but I liked being able to mix-match lime MK11 and INJ2

MK vs DC, MK9, Shaolin Monks, Deception, MKX, MK11, and MK1(with a Mask that’s a Mixed of Shaolin Monks and MKX), are the Best Sub-Zero Skin, now do Smoke or Rain Next.

Definitely would love to see a visual history on Kitana/Mileena/Jade. The male and female ninjas always had to most interesting visual evolution in MK to me

I think out of all the characters in Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero probably has the highest constancy for having great costumes.

Would love to have Shredder-Zero in MK11 unlocked, but for some reason it was LOCKED to a Aftermath pre-order and it never really appears in the store.

MK1 ninjas are by far the best they ever looked. They have been overdesigned for years.

MK Sub-Zero on the Genesis had the same stance as Scorpion but had fatalities, whilst the SNES had the same stance as the arcade version but no fatalities.

Kuai Liang is my favorite character in the franchise, having grown up always using Sub-Zero in MK games. So now I'm at a weird place with MK1 where idk if I wanna use Sub Zero or Scorpion as my main since Scorpion is now Kuai Liang lol

mk9 is my favorite sub costume most definitely. i love imperial guard dog and oni faces on the armor with the blue wraps. it’s great.

I'm really hoping we actually get Shredder in MK as a guest at some point, especially after the Turtles being in Injustice. THe amount of alternate costumes he could have is in no shortage (especially looking at the design he had in the Turtles' arcade ending) and he has a LOT of potential as a fighter being a ninja/samurai mix.

The reason Mythologies and MK4 are identical because it's the exact same wardrobe. Bi-Han wore this in Mythologies with the simplistic choice being deliberate to reference MK1 (1992) since the game takes place before it. It's basically an updated version of that. Kuai Liang took up his older brother's outfit in MK4 to finish what he started and help Raiden fend against Shinnok's forces. Keep in mind he's still a deserter of the Lin Kuei at this point in time. The outfit is more for his brother than them.

Shredder Zero and Shaolin Monks Sub Zero are the best designs. A great take on Classic and a great Revamp.

I say Deception, Amrageddon, MK2, UMK3, MK9, MK11 and Shaolin Monks have my favorite Sub-Zero designs, he's solid all around with his overall visual history. Though Un-Masked Sub starts to look cool in MKX and MK11 with the beard.

I always think that, despite the reputation MK got for their character designs, Sub-Zero is the one classic character who has always looked great ever since the first game (yes, I don't think his MK Deception alt is that bad, I just wish he didn't have that crappy hair). Except for Injustice 2, I think he looks really bad there and is almost a textbook example of overdesigned to the point of ugly, and to a lesser extent, MK1 since it's just a really basic outfit compared to what he looked in the past (then again, I'm not really a fan of how simplified a lot of MK1's cast are compared to the past games) Potential hot (heh) takes: I prefer maskless Sub over mask Sub (feels more fitting for a Grandmaster and not another "definitely not a ninja") and ice arms (specifically how they look in MKvsDC and Shaolin Monks) should just be a staple of Sub's design now because I love it

I actually LOVE Ice-Wraith-Ninja SubZ from MKX. His stance with the one balled fist and the other flattened palm! LOVE everything about it.

I really hope we get shaolin monks skins for the characters that were in that game in MK1. I really wanna see scorpions intro costume on current gen consoles 🤞

I thought i was the only one who his favourite sub zero costume was the deception/armageddon one, it was my favourite since i was a kid and no other looked as great as that one for me 10/10

A visual chill-story.

01. MKX default is one of the best designs for the character, imo. It's not perfect, and I'd love to see them bring it back and maybe tweak it a bit. But they were definitely 'inspired' by Vincent Proce's concept art. That Sub-Zero he drew all those years ago (and you'll know which one I mean as soon as you Google it), to me personally, absolutely nails the character. It's like the original Sub-Zero, but good.. great, in fact. I don't care what anyone says, Proce's Sub is easily the best one, although that's more like original Bi Han Sub-Zero. I also used the Revenant skin a lot in MKX. I liked it, sue me. Beard-Zero didn't really work for me. But yeah, MKX default is probably my favorite. 02. Deception's "Shredder" was obviously top notch, but the helmet does detract somewhat from what basic Sub should be, imo. The white fur was a nice touch though. 03. MK11 default Sub-Zero was alright. I remember using the white version of his klassic costume, with the demon mask with the fangs. That was a good look! I've always liked the idea of a white/blue costume. The Blizzard King costume was also pretty sick. The Deception version was alright, but I didn't love it as much as that original Deception one. Something about the way it looks on a normal character model diminishes the badassery for some reason. But lots of memorable options in this, which is why I'd put MK11 Sub in the top 3. 04. MK1 Sub is actually kinda cool. They'd been adding a lot to the character over the years, and I feel like going back to a kind of basic design, at least for his default, is a good call. The 'basic' thing is misleading, though. The costume is quite elaborate. I think it lacks elements that really jump out, but that's also a good thing. I quite like it. 05. Deception's alt is top 5 for me. Yes it was kinda goofy and weird, but there's something about it that I just love. It has this mysterious Lin Kuei vibe to it. Maybe what he needed was a different head, but neck-down, I still think it's a cool design. Again, somewhat reminiscent of Proce's art, being fully clothed and not wearing skin tight shit. The older designs (realistically) aren't that interesting. Injustic Sub was awesome, but too much of a deviation for me to rank him in my top 5. It's like a sugar-rush fever-dream Sub-Zero.

I’m glad this is becoming a series

I've always been a Scorpion guy myself, but I think MK11 Sub-Zero looks the best for me, the default one. Basically as much as I think also Scorpion looks like a f_king 20 out of 10 in MK11. Let's just say that for the most part MK11 designs (or re-designs) were top notch for the franchise. And MK9 also did some amazing things, so did MKX. The whole MK9 / MKX / MK11 run was phenomenal for the franchise really. I think that the designs for the new MK1 are... alright, nothing really stands out other than Reptile; where they finally did him right 30+ years later, was about time.

Mk1 Sub-Zero is my favorite so far. He doesn't look like a bodybuilder, the costume's great and doesn't have any overwhelming features to it. It just works!
