I ventured up the bypass to some local woods, to further test my new small tarp set up, it was a cold day and dropping well below zero so a good cold weather test.plenty of deer in the woods but I only got glimpses of them running off due to my walking on frosty leaves, so no pics.
Bad choice of sleeping bag but still a great little camp.

@Helen-and-Katarin-Juska-law
Just re-watching your videos for inspiration and comfort. The previous comment from 'Helen' was from a combined channel with my lovely partner Emma. Sadly she is no more...on 10th May she suffered a total cardiac arrest and died in my arms. So....needing inspiration and to be honest some comfort from the familiar, so re-watching your vids. Just keep on as you are....so inspiring...thank you for sharing your time out. Helen.

Ah I’m so sorry to hear this. I had missed yous commenting. I hope the wide open spaces give you some peace and comfort and if I can play a very small part, I’m glad. Take care.

Adrian, this video is just perfect , great content and editing. I watched the last video twice . I finally think I have seen a better way of camping out with minimal fuss. Showing us the gear you use is priceless, it’s so useful.
@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi and thanks for coming along again, this tarp is the dd s 2.8x1.5 so a bit better than the magic carpet at 140x 140 it just gives enough room to change if it’s raining, I much prefer a small tarp as it’s quicker and can pitch nice and tight in the wind, bonus is not so much wet material to carry out !! You see so much as well, Cheers

Nothing beats a bivy camp in the frost. Cracking bit of woodland. I was a bit worried when i saw the foil mat under the bivy but then you said you had your xped mat in your bivy and I was relieved... that would have been a bitter night without it. I'm also no fan of sleeping in my clothes. I didn't think that sleeping bag would of been OK tbh, but like you said it's all experimental with the kit and you have to try these things otherwise how would you know for sure. Great camp and you're never too old to play in the woods. And Merry Christmas Ade👍✌️👌👊💥
@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi Gez that 400 bag was certainly not up to the job but was ok when I used the down jacket, it was a bit of a trial, testing what I need to carry, as unlike your good self I want a light carry, but I will stick to taking thermals as coats are to restrictive in the bag, I am only using the foam mat to prevent punctures in my bivy bags while in woods, on the hill tops I would just have the bivy in the floor Cheers Adrian

I'm enjoying your videos. You might want to try that experiment again, but this time removing your down jacket and placing it as an extra covering over your sleeping bag. It works better. Also, any spare clothing, place in the bottom of the bivi bag to reduce the amount of air that needs heating up. Enjoyed it. Thank you
@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi and thanks for watching Good idea with the clothes but if the bivy got condensation the clothes would be wet Cheers
@mallyredfearn6834
@mallyredfearn6834 Год назад
@northumberlandmountainhopper Do you know, that's never occurred to me, though the British army bivi bag doesn't suffer badly with condensation, especially if in a little breeze. The down jacket over the sleeping bag works well, though I've never had need to do it while in a bivi bag. Thanks. Every day is a school day.
@northumberlandmountainhopper
@@mallyredfearn6834 yes the army bivy bag is magic I use it in the winter Cheers
@HardyTempestsWildCampsandWalks
hey mate, great setup. Have you thought about using a fleece liner to boost the temperature rating one the 400? I use the sea to summit one and its brilliant. Hardy
@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi and thanks for popping by, I will check how heavy a thick liner is as the bag with liner may approach the weight of the ascent 1900gr ? I have a silk one but I am not keen as I get tangled up in the night, my bags are also 230cm x/l and preferably I like the sizes to all match, thanks for the suggestion I will check a fleece one out. Cheers Adrian

Here in the PNW (Seattle), where the winters are wet. It can feel even colder with a little drop in temp to the mid 30’s F (-1C), It can feel especially cold with the higher moisture content here. Which is probably similar to your area over there. Working construction in the 80’s I had learned to use a vitamin to help my body give me a little boost in heat. I would take niacin and break it in half and take it through the morning till I could get my feet warmed up. After they got warmed up with the niacin then my activity would get the blood flowing. Niacin (they say) disclaimer! Opens up the capillaries in our cardiovascular system. So I basically was getting a head start with the niacin. But take to much of it I would get really hot and then felt colder through the day, like a match flaming up and out. So I learned, less is more, and as time went on my system took the cold better.

@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi and hello, do you use the tarp the same way. ? I have just gone to this little tarp, as I was using just the magic carpet to cover my head end on my light camps, but this gives me space to change etc, I use the bigger tarp when I have too, same as a tent, next time it’s the big sleeping bag as I pushed it on this one, as for the stove it’s useless in the cold, my two don’t have regulators on them so I need an upgrade. Cheers and enjoy the tarp and bivy camping

Good job I got all summer to try me kit out. Does temperature make a bivvi bag more or less prone to condensation? Another beautiful location and video, great job.
@northumberlandmountainhopper
@northumberlandmountainhopper 3 месяца назад
Hi and thanks for watching, personally I think and I only suffer from condensation when it’s really damp summer or winter, I have had many dry cold camps, it’s just where the heat transfer occurs. Cheers

Hello there. Is that foam mat one of the £15-20 ones with reflective coating on AMZ? When you said the ground was still frozen underneath you, I thought that was a good sign. I have just bought a bivy and am looking around for ideas. Subbed.

Looks like a great night out, you won't beat the NeoAir XTherm pad for v cold winter camping, a new quiet one comes out soon, but these are great for keeping you warm with lighter gear so wonder if it would work for you and the lighter bag? We run our get home bags with these and Hyperion -6 bags as they are light, with a bivvy over the top. Might be worth a look if you want warmth but not the weight?
@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi and thanks for the input, I will check some specs out, happy with the sleeping bags, but will look at the mat for choices when these fail or I can treat myself ! I could save weight by having a normal size mat but I enjoy the wide mat. Cheers

I struggle to understand the point of camping this way in winter. You can buy a more robust, better weather protection, warmer, and no heavier tent. If you’re going to use a bivi why not at least use a tarp that gives total cover. Try putting chemical hand warmers in your boots overnight and plug them with something to reduce heat loss (I use my thermal mattress stuff sack). If you use a Nalgene bottle, fill it with hot water and use it as a hot water bottle - it also means you have liquid water in the morning and not a block of ice.
@northumberlandmountainhopper
Hi and welcome, each to their own, this is a new little tarp set up I am trialling for use on long hikes/climbs, In fact my favourite set up was the little magic carpet, but changed to this so I could get changed in the rain, I also enjoy having minimal cover as I am more part of where I am, as for the boots yes a warmer is a good idea, but if it’s really cold I put them in the bivy, in a bag. As for weight I have a tent that weighs 1.3kg but prefer a bivy camp, Thanks for the input and hopefully see you again. Cheers
