I wander through the diverse terrains of central Oregon in my modified Subaru Forester, complete with dispersed camping, cooking, campfires, and geological discoveries.
Originally aired in as three separate episodes in 2020, this featurette has been re-edited to remove sponsored content and eliminate superfluous segments for better pacing and streamlined storytelling beginning to end.

I really really really miss the Forester.

Yeah, it was a great little car! I'm hoping one day I can build another Forester and sort of "finish" that project that never quite got all the way done before it was wrecked. 🙂

I’m so glad you did this Donald. I had forgotten how well made these older videos are. You have some really appealing shot compositions. Love the sequence with the slow mo chainsaw followed by the silhouette shot against the sun. Also really enjoy the way you edited some of the travel with interesting cuts to the music. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I love your Forester videos. They are what encouraged me to get out there with my Crosstrek. I've modded it overlanding with skids, all-terrains and a 2" lift, and now have a fridge on a slide, and a pull-out kitchen! It would be cool to bump into you sometime and we can discuss how hard it is to store all that gear in a small car.

Damn I miss that Subie. That’s why I originally subscribed since I own one (Crosstrek). But still enjoying the content.

I love this. I miss your old Subaru vids. There was something about the mighty adventurability coupled with everyday drivability that gave it a sort of humble strength

I agree completely. I LOVE the Frontier, but there was a subtle additional nuance about getting to these places in a Subaru and making this little car work for me that isn't quite the same with a 4x4 truck. In an ideal world with ample budget, I would love to build another Forester, using everything that I learned from the first one. Maybe one day!

It's funny how most overland videos are really just outdoor cooking channels. 🤣🍔
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 8 месяцев назад
LOL...I forgot how much I used to include cooking. I almost never cook in my videos now. In fact, half the time after a long day on the trail running around setting up cameras, I'm too tired to cook anything at all and just eat a peanut butter sandwich for dinner. 😆
@Horseplucker
@Horseplucker 8 месяцев назад
That’s funny and true. A whole bunch of “watch me get to this area just so I can cook something”. Or “drink this beer and coffee”.

@derekallen9036 8 месяцев назад
@@softroadingthewestI enjoy watching you cook because it gives me ideas for what I can cook when I am dispersed camping. A lot more relatable than the channels that make elaborate meals after a long trek. Thank you for your videos!

Ahhhh Donald…..I sure miss your Subaru! I’m so glad you uploaded this old footage. I’m gonna miss the music you’ve been using, once you make the switch. Is that Billy Chinook?
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 8 месяцев назад
Don't worry, I'm switching music services because I like it much better. I've been using the new service since, gosh, April I think? So most of what you've heard over the past several months has been music from my new service...so, all of the Colorado series, all of the eastern Oregon trip in July, a few other central Oregon one-offs...all music from the new service. They have a huge collection and better tools for finding the right piece of music, which has made it much faster and less frustrating, and I've been very happy with the "scoring" I've done since making the switch. 👍

I think it would be great if you made a video on the pros and cons of each of the camping setups you’ve used over the years. It would be great to hear your insight on this as you’ve had several setups and camped a lot more than most people.

I LOVE your videos especially this one. (I’ve already watched the original video back in 2020.) It makes me wanna go visit Oregon someday. As an owner of 2009 SH5 Forester in Japan your video inspires me to customize my rig for go off roading. (It’s sad that you don’t own the forester anymore but I also love your new camper truck!)

I forgot how much I've enjoyed these older videos. Sorry about the music licensing BS. It's a lot of work putting all this together. Great job and thank you!
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 8 месяцев назад
Oh there's no BS really. It's all normal licensing stuff and it's brought about by my own decision to jump to a new service. None of the music services allow continued usage of their music in new uploads when you stop actively paying. It's perfectly fair and is spelled out in the terms when you subscribe. I put myself in this spot by switching services before I got around to building all the compilations. They're not that difficult to edit together and it's kind of fun to revisit them, so all good there. 🙂
@ExploringWithTheBz
@ExploringWithTheBz 8 месяцев назад
@@softroadingthewest Oh I see. So your older videos are OK, just anything new that you post can’t have the same music. I guess that makes sense if you switch to a different service.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 8 месяцев назад
@@ExploringWithTheBz Yes, anything I published while actively licensed with that company is protected for life, none of that needs to go away. I just can't re-use any of that music in future drops once my license expires. Based on the comments here, I definitely didn't explain this clearly enough in this video, that's totally on me. 😄

The next time that you're there, if you walk to the end of the road that you said was too narrow it leads to the northeastern end of the outcrop. You can work your way up to the top of that part of the outcrop from that point. It's worth the walk. We hiked it as kids a number of times. I've camped in the area for years, but it's been a while. It brought back memories of my childhood. Thanks.

That is an older Thule Summit. I think it's designed for carrying skis. I got it super cheap off Craigslist, had a non-functioning lock and was missing its original brackets but it was perfect for my DIY rack. 🙂

Maybe! Heh, when I hear the word coulee, in my head I visualize the French word _coulis_ which is pronounced more or less the same...it's a type of sauce often made from fruit. I feel like there's a joke in there somewhere about a coulee of _coulis_ but I can't quite put it together. 😆
