Previous Title: Subaru, Hamlet, and Soliloquy
Warning, spoilers for both Re:Zero Season 1 (2016) and Hamlet (1600ish). Also I know I mispronounce "ay," sorry I stuttered!
Back in the era of stage plays, they dealt with many challenges that some take for granted today. For example, how do you deal with the lack of access to narration? Sure, you could have someone pretend to be the character off-stage, with the actor looking wistfully out into the distance. But Shakespeare approached it a little differently.
His characters would wrestle with their inner demons, exposing themselves in moments where they felt truly alone with their thoughts-giving the audience the feeling of listening in to something you weren't supposed to hear. And rather than being cheap, almost omniscient exposition, his characters often failed to find the flaws in their thinking-being unreliable narrators to even themselves... which rings pretty true to life.
While I was enjoying Re:Zero just fine before then, I absolutely adored episode 18. It really felt like a turning point, a Shakespearean-esque exploration of a truly flawed individual-but also their return (ha) from their darkest depths.

@ЯБезымянный-о5ф
@ЯБезымянный-о5ф 3 года назад
@@NewJoodat In one word? Cringy. In many words? Her understanding of Subaru's character and the story is pretty shallow, to say the least. You can play "Feminist Bingo" while listening to her. Too busy being woke and offended rather then trying to understand a male scum, or other women for that matter, let alone seeing what they represent. Why would someone bring their own problems into the anime they watch is just beyond me. Well, it's not like I condone Subaru's hissy fit, but I do know that stress and pressure make even the most patient people loose control and say really mean things. Humans work that way, you, me, anyone. Our brain is made for thinking, sometimes it thinks dark and mean thoughts. Calm mind doesn't pay attention to them, but when you are angry, those often turn into words. I know better than make judgement of a person's character from their words said in distress, ignoring the circumstances of their behavior. Apparently, Noralities doesn't. If we take ep.13, how about this POV: Why Emilia tried to leave Subaru out of the ceremony? [It's very important, a stoopid male like you will mess up, I am stronk woman and don't need your protection, so I order you to stay, sit!]. Was it? No. It's not because she knew Subaru will ruin the ceremony. Emilia was scared. It was not under her control. She knew it was going to be a mess, she knew she's going to be ridiculed and verbally abused. She didn't want Subaru to witness it. She didn't explain anything to Subaru and he didn't understand her. Yet she accused him of not explaining anything to her, even though he really wanted to, but couldn't. Is it fair of her to demand a promise from Subaru, while she decides to keep him in the dark? Wasn't her mistrust the part of the reason Subaru ended up breaking the promise? Insulting the knights was a mistake made out of anger and confusion. Subaru said and did a lot of stupid things, but the fact that he spoke up for Emilia, when neither Reinhardt nor Julius, or any of the knights did, is not a bad thing. He saw the injustice and challenged it, he did what a knight should have done. Julius understood and respected that. Not to mention that his display of loyalty ever so slightly improved Emilia's public image.

SUBARU: What do you know?! What do you know about me?! This is the kind of man I am! I have no strenght but I want it all. I have no knowledge but all I do is dream. There's nothing I can do, but I struggle in vain! I... I... I hate myself! All I do is talk a big game, and make myself sound like a big shot, when I can't do anything! I never do anything, yet I can complain like a pro! Who do I think I am? It's amazing I can live like this and not feel ashamed! Right?! I'm empty! There's nothing inside me at all! I know that... Yeah, that's obvious. I know it's obvious. Before I came here... Before I got into the situation that led me to all of you. Do you have any idea what I did? I did nothing. I've never done a single thing! And this is the result! What I am now is the result! All of my powerlessness, all of my incompetence, is the product of my rotten character. Wanting to accomplish something when I've never done anything goes beyond the limits of arrogance! The cost of my laziness and all the wasteful habits in my life just ends up killing both you and me! That's right. I have no character. Even when I thought I could go on living here, nothing changed. That old man saw that part of me perfectly. Right? I wasn't trying to get stronger, or trying to make things better. I was just striking an obvious pose to justify myself, to say that I was trying, that it wasn't like I wasn't doing anything. I wanted to say I couldn't help it. I wanted to be told that it couldn't be helped! I was only pretending to push my body to the limits so that would be possible! Even when I had you help me study, I was just posing to cover up how embarrassed I felt! At heart, I'm just a small, cowardly, filthy piece of trash who is always worried about how other see me, and nothing... nothing about me has changed! I knew it all along. That all of it was my fault... I'm the lowest of the low. I absolutely hate myself.

This reminded me why I watched Re: Zero til the end. Sure it was entertaining and you wanted to see what would happen next, but I actually really liked seeing the truth of Subaru as a character, and this video highlighted it perfectly. He was a deeply flawed character who pushed his ideals of the situation onto those around him, but it wasn't until he opened up about how powerless he really thought he was that he was able to get the help he needed and make the most progress he had ever made. It wasn't the greatest series ever, but it managed to do that right at least

Episode 18 of Re: Zero is what led me to discover Monogatari in the first place, and this channel. So for that, episode 18 will always be one of my favorite episodes in all of anime.
@SeaCow1g
@SeaCow1g 4 года назад
Some context: After watching episode 18 I felt truly moved. I felt like I had found the essence of what drew me to anime in the first place. I wanted to find out if there were more series/episodes that did this and so I went on Reddit and asked the community to suggest an anime series that did the same thing that Re: Zero episode 18 had done. The comments came flooding in and the majority of them suggested Monogatari. Now, given its anachronistic structure and weird season composition I had no idea where to begin so I had to do some research. But, once I got into it, I discovered that Monogatari didn't just have an episode like episode 18 of Re: Zero....the entire series was like episode 18 of Re: Zero! I found everything I wanted in an anime all my life and couldn't articulate up until that point....and it was incredible.

Hmmmm.... to be honest I kind of think Subaru did in fact snap for a while there. When faced with an insurmountable problem it's not unusual for the mind to retreat into itself to escape the issue. Given he was trapped in the harshest situation yet he couldn't deal with it and retreated from reality. If everything is going to die, myself included, why act at all? I think the context of Petelgeuse's criticism of Subaru comes from the two character's kinds of madness. Subaru's was a madness of regression, where the madness Petelgeuse fell into stripped him of who he formally was almost entirely. It seemed to be that was why Petelgeuse called Subaru's madness "fake", because it wasn't the same sort of schism his mind went through. Also, even Petelgeuse wouldn't be able to understand the levels of despair Subaru was going through. Pretty much no one can, given everyone else is living a linear existence, where as Subaru gets to live, die, and remember each obstacle set in his path before he ever reaches it. A madness that results in regression would seem like a 'fake' madness to someone without that context.

I already thought I could relate to subaru before but this even 4 minutes into this video I see that subaru was designed in a way that seemingly perfectly encapulates my current mindset and or all my various ones. knowing your not doing anything while trying to convince yourself your doing something by simply stating that to be the case or doing small things that you think make what you're saying true when really your doing the minimum of what you need to do to convince yourself which is basically nothing.

Subaru is a really good guy. Like REALLY good. It’s just the way he does things that make him come off as something else. Subaru really cares about other people and he even sacrificed himself about 3-4 times for a girl he had just met. It shows how admirable Subaru is as a character. Sometimes the way he does things can be questionable, and even bad. Sometimes the things he does end up hurting himself and other people. But in the end, all he has are good intentions.

Nice video, I've been meaning to reread Hamlet too. Felt like a good combination of a video essay and an actual analysis by yourself. I don't think I've seen anything else but I'd love more stuff like this as I've found anime lacking in good faith analysis and you seem actually interested in understanding the work put in by the creatives and the nuance of 'rules' which I inferred from you talking about 'Show don't tell' which I've seen people take that and others so zealously that they can't create or enjoy anything.

All too often are we asked, "What can you do for others? For your community? For your company?" and hardly do we hear, "What can you do for yourself?" Too the point that thinking such a thing is considered selfish and not the right thing to think about. All too often we forget that we all need the time to not think about others and instead think about ourselves and what we need or want.

9:01 - 9:10 Ouch...that made me cry a little.As always,Subaru will always be somewhat of a relatable character especially in his darkest moments (Given how he deals with it)and yet,at the same time,a fear of mine.The fear of repeating the same mistakes and never having truly changed which in turn is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It reminds me of silly kid stuff I dreamt about being and got a contrast of it as I grew up.Being a hero,being special and all that."If Karma truly existed then why is it so broken" were the thoughts that crossed my mind too many times at ages I should be laughing away.If anything there was or is special about me is just being a boring gloomy nobody(Funny enough,I am good at acting like the villain,oof).But I made peace with the fact that these hands cannot really hold people and this voice of mine can't reach the people I want to reach in time. Which is worse?Failing to save people whom you care about a lot...or watch them get better(to the point of arrogance) and completely abandon you.But I guess it's better that way.It's better to be alone than having others to suffer because of you when they could lead a much better life without you in the mix.(Yeah,taking the easy way out,I'd rather be an antisocial and kill myself[killing my emotions]than having to die inside about being myself and being blamed for every single thing I do wrong,than having people potentially suffer and/or die because of me just because I didn't do this or done that)No matter what,it seems life just wants me to be a villain.People were already calling me that as I was growing up(I even leveled up to "Monster")so I naturally(Or should I say subconsciously) took up the role even if I was being falsely accused one too many times.(Yep,it seems I am not that strong even mentally,big oof) Funny thoughts crossed my mind too "If I were to enter a fictional world,could I befriend the protagonist?" "Hmm...nope" "I would pretty much be the antagonist,given me,myself and my luck" Well,thank you nonetheless for reading this uselessly long and pointless comment.Have a good day or night,dear reader. :) Edit:What is the point of being awake when even the nightmares that haunt you seem far more interesting.A little "edgy" indeed.

I'd watched already over 200 of the animes but Re:Zero is still one of my favourites. It's not because of amazing story,world,gore moments. It's about...Subaru :D I know,it may seems weird,but actually before Re:Zero I never thought I might change so much in myself. This show is kinda therapeutic for me. Through Subaru's character,his struggles and emotions it shows me a lot of my own flaws,struggles,emotions which I was hidden deep inside. He also gives me a hope,that you can change, that you may fall deep into the despair but theres a chance to get up and go on. It's weird but I find him realistic, I mean I would probably do the same things since the first episode cuz we're really similar. I'm doing a similar things and mistakes in my own life. But I can see how I grown. I can see how I started to appreciate my dearest,how much I wanted to be seen as a perfect person,which I'm not. I'm flawed and sometimes it is hard to live with me. But I'll never give up,no matter what.

Watching Re zero for the first time made me hate Subaru not for anything other than his human mistakes, Maybe because at that time I was watching Anime to escape reality but anyway, the more I started thinking about it like 4 years later when Season 2 got announced, I Was happy but it felt weird. Why I am happy , I hated the guy, Why did he do that , why did he fall like that was back in my mind, until I Rewatched it again and then it hit me I was happy for season 2 because Subaru is a human the same thing that made me hate him in the first place was the thing that made me exited to see him again his mistakes his arrogance his personality is relatable. Back in my mind when I first saw it it was just another Anime, not taking it serious. not like watching a drama play or reading a book like Hamlet , my mindset wasn't in the right place when I first saw it, There is that feeling like when you go play a game or read a book or watch a series , Like let's say I am going to Watch Breaking bad I am waiting for the drama, but watching friends I am waiting for the comedy , Anime for me was mostly Fantasy were things that I can't do can be done, there which lead me to not welcome Subaru at first. After this Rewatch and my understanding of character development and that Even though Re:Zero is an Isekai it is close to home so much and I loved it and I loved Subaru's character so much that it made me start reading the web novel before the new season comes out and to my surprise what a character he is. A huge scene that maybe not all felt it was in season 2 episode 4 even though I read it I know what is going to happen etc, but the scene were he looks at the clock waiting it to go pass the time that will make him able to go to school and then start sleeping again. This scene was relatable to me sooooooooooo fking hard looking at this scene was looking at the mirror but to my past when I was young , I was glad that I moved from that point and was also happy for him because his achievement became as of mine , which makes him even more of a masterpiece character. Re:Zero after all that you can guess became my favorite anime/Web novel of all time and Subaru's character after Reading the Web novel and keeping up with it became on par with Guts from berserk don't @ me. I couldn't have guessed that something will pass Code Geass as my favorite Anime but Re:Zero did and it was thanks to Subaru and the great will written characters.

I realized this the moment I grasped that his sole gimmick was waking after death. It's a fairly accurate portrayal of many young men today, dreaming and hoping amidst hidden self-loathing and indecision. I feel that the main problem is that Re:Zero mucks this up constantly with bad "animu" moments that take one out of the story and its soliloquy's. Great video

Rem saved the re:zero world. Rem helped Subaru feeling better about himself by showing him that someone believed he could become better. Then in season 2 Subaru did the same thing for Emilia, Garfield, Roswald and Beatrice...of course he didn't say the exact same stuff he adapted his speechs to the person it concerned, but at the end of the day he kept using Rem's method. So yeah, episode 18 is the most important re:zero moment, everything Subaru accomplished after this moment was thanks to Rem saying those things.

3:18 already objectively wrong. He goes because he needs to be there when things go down to have the information necessary to fix things on the next loop. Saying he’s just being useless is silly. He literally is only able to make it through this arc BECAUSE of his “useless acts” that allow him to gather enough information to form the allegiance.

«To be or not to be» line is about self-ending only on the surface. Remember, Hamlet is playing crazy person and he is being watched by his enemy. And he knows he is being watched. This line is a message. This line terrifies his enemy. This deeper layer is big deal. It changes the scene completely. After that you can't just tell me that Hamlet wonders should he end his life of should he not.

I believe most people would had lead up to this blowout of self-loathing, we all act big and smart and strong but even then I know most would struggle like Subaru maybe not in the same way yet still struggle with the weight. It's why I love him as a character because I can relate to him so much. I probably would had made the same mistakes as he did if I was thrown into another world out of nowhere and restarted the world everytime I died. This is why Subaru is my favorite Protagonist besides Kazuma as he feels more human than most. -A random weeb 2021

Long post warning, just skip if you don't give a shit. First of all "To be or not be" put the fear of God into me. I read it carefully and contemplated that death is even more terrifying than I thought. Yeah sure, mostly we kinda nod at the notion it is like unconsciousness, but with rigor mortis. But, thinking about it, post-mortem. it's eternal. Just the concept of eternity is scary, so just an end to everything is comforting. But if there IS SOMETHING, now THAT is scary. So thanks for making me think about this. Anyway, I don't quite get the point of this video. And personally this is something I can relate to. So the best I can do is to offer my perspective, and articulate my thoughts as a probably worse version of Subaru in the real world. I got 4 suicide attempts behind me and a shifted L4 slipped disc/vertebra, or whatever L4 discopathy means (and I'll gladly tell anyone the details if you don't believe me, the stories are honestly kinda funny) Is this a "Re:Zero plagiarized Hamlet or something for just shits and giggles"? Subaru is a flawed character - to compare - even Gary Stu's are flawed characters. Reinhard is a Gary Stu. He could I shit you not, kill the equivalent of the Sun. Swing his sword once, and whoosh, there goes the world. And online, like nearly everybody hated Subaru during the first season, on par with Eren (didn't think he'd go nuclear) when the show aired as anime protagonists go. And I love the Monogatari series, probably more or at the very least equally as Re:Zero, (since I still don't know whether Senshougahara and Suzuki were once in love). Subaru (prior) is a shut-in, who is for all we know already on Zoloft and has the non-admirable character flaws like self-pity branching out towards self-doubt, self-hatred and self-destructiveness, kinda like me. I fucking hate myself for NOT striving to be better. But everyone I said "noone can hate me as much as I hate myself" to, the responses were always "not your fault", which when I see other people's competence gives me even more guilt. Even though I've been diagnosed with clinical depression, an anxiety disorder and chronic insomnia (I can sleep without meds; just maybe 30mins to 2hours naturally, but it's pretty miserable). And as someone who has taken acid I know what a nightmare introspection can be. My struggle is to not use my diagnoses as excuses and show that I'm capable of something at least, past the time I broke. But, that is not the case. The worst thing though, is that saying "I hate myself" is not cathartic in my experience. I'm then asked the question why, and answer logically that most people have their life together by the age of 25, or at least planned out. I can't, even if I wanted to. T he best advice my psychiatrist said to me was when I was telling him about being unable to meet expectations (mine or otherwise) was "Mister, don't take yourself as you thought you should be. Perceive yourself as: You are who you are. Nothing more, nothing less." Which is obvious to most people, but during my chats in the mental ward, I met other, similar people like me. Girls struggling with keeping down food, a police officer I knew from before... Alas I'm about on 10 different meds from alprazolam through oxycodone to zopiclone. And sort of amazed that they let me out after a 4th fucked up attempt. "Guy sucks at suiciding, let him go back home lol" As for Subaru; he's dropped into a fantasy world. Now he's trying whatever he can do to get the girl and whatnot. And like, have you never made any dumb mistakes? If I was dropped into that world, I'd be homeless, (I'm fucking disabled to boot), and would be scheduled for execution in the end. I keep reading the web novel and now am in the latter half of Arc 7. As a character, in my well, not-so-humble opinion, he does develop.as a character. Significantly so. The point of Re:Zero isn't the gruesomeness, though I won't deny that's the secondary attraction of the plot. Anyone who's read the novel will tell you that characters develop as they should. And very nearly as much as Subaru. And you can see this in Season 2's climax of Ram against Firebomb clown man AKA AL-GOAda. When the music starts, shit man, the feels. To extrapolate on the death and horrors (his worst were the rabbits, after that the rooftop loop in arc 7 if you were wondering), during Arc 5 which is basically a full scale city battle, Subaru dies ONLY 3 TIMES. With Reinhard they crash Regulus' and Emilia's wedding. Basically Subaru brings a nuclear warhead to a nuclear plant considering R&R's combat capabilities. Regulus can break every law of physics, is invulnerable, and if he wanted he could destroy the planet in like a microsecond iirc. The only thing missing during the wedding was "The Rains of Castamere" not playing to signal the impending and shocking bloodbath. I think it was the most climactic showdown in the arc, especially since Regulus while conditionally invincible, he gets defeated by his own arrogance. But 4-5 others characters (Priscilla, Wilhelm, Julius...) also battle other Archbishops and rely on teamwork and everyone develops as a result, and Subaru gives a deadass rousing and empathetic speech to all refugees from the battle who made it to the shelters in time, about to all kill each other. (Wrath authority). The greatest atrocity in Arc 5 are the Giant Flies which are... the most disturbing thing ever to be put in Re:Zero. Regulus is a rapist, but I didn't think Tappei would go full Kafka in his story. And as someone who has taken acid I know what a nightmare introspection can be. As I said, saying that I hate myself, does not exonerate me from the answer which is a constant maze of cognitive dissonance and "I should have done this and that, everywhere I look it's catastrophe, it's already too late, everyone hates me, and the world would be better off without me because it's all my fault." style mental gymnastics. I hold myself to the arguably absurd standard of "Every person is guilty of all the good they haven't done." If then asked the question of why I hate myself (or who have I become), and answer logically that most people have their life together by the age of 25, or at least planned out. My point is, AT LEAST SUBARU GOES TOWARDS HIS GOALS. He's not a talker, he constantly pursues his goals. He has a will to achieve something. My achievements boil down to being able to speak 2 foreign languages and read about 200 kanji from the other one. At 17 I got a C2 certificate, which allows me to actually teach English to other people and not so long ago, I bought a piano, because I wanted to learn how to play it. Then I went to a tutor who told me that because of scar tissue on the ligaments on the back of my left hand, that my ability to learn to play it, while not outright impossible, I can barely play an octave with my left hand because i have very little feeling left in pinky finger. So during my 2nd attempt of ending myself, trying to hit my radial artery, big surprise, I accidentally'd myself into an even more destructive regret. That's all I've achieved. Ruining my life and alienating my friends, because I'm a bona fide mental and they're better off without me. My will to take action? My ambitions? Gone, shattered, fucked, damned, fucked again, and left for dead on the side of the road. And since anhedonia sort of prevents me enjoying the ride towards that point. If you think Subaru is a clown, then I'm the whole goddamn circus. Don't get the wrong idea, I do not think suicide is good. I think it is something one needs to think through very carefully, plus, even gunshot wounds to the head can be not-fatal. Add to the fact, that no matter what method you choose, you will most likely fuck it up. Either by not succeeding, or waking up paralyzed or comatose or something. I am not a nihilist (e.g. people who think we should all kill ourselves because feelings are bad and we die in the end), I am not a pessimist (e.g. Schopenhauer), I am a loosely defined individualist who falls flat of the definition Nietzsche - not per se- proposed in his Will to Power. I love Carl Jung more than Freud. The two of them kinda copied each other's homework, but for me Jung is equally interesting to me as Kant. tl;dr abusive parents + trauma + depression, 4 times in the icu, scene. God is dead and we have killed him; The last Christian died on the cross (he said lamenting). Suicide is a most comforting thought, by means of which one gets through many a dark night. And when I back myself into a corner again like the waste of space I am? Chemical reaction now including a NaNO2 solution. As for Subaru's soliloquy, in the JP dub, he seriously should've gotten an award for that. Gold star if you get the quotes i used, or read this comment, a "solilquical" comment (since let's be honest noone will fucking read it) at all aside from myself. And people who say that Nietzsche is a nihilist... have not read Nietzsche. That opinion is simply not valid in the slightest. Also SPOILER for Arc 7, Rem is awake, but amnesiac. She has trouble walking though.
