This video is a bit complainy, but everything I talk about in this video is something Subaru needs to listen to. Many of us have gripes about the decisions Subaru has made about the direction of their recent vehicles. With all these changes and uncertainties looming for the 2025 model year, there are some things that need to be addressed to truly make the vehicles they produce some of the best on the market.

Subaru kind of mastered AWD and off road capabilities and they don't care about the rest. Didn't pay much attention when their cars were in 20-30k price range. Now, when you're paying 35-45k you have the right to complain and deserve better car.

Lol master awd? Using the same diffs from old Datsuns? With no LSD’s and lack luster cvt transmissions. The drivetrain ruins these wilderness models and it has to do with cost. As a company they don’t have the financial resources to develop and bring to market a actual tq vectoring diff or a 8-10 spd transmission.

Great Points! I would like to see: 1. Recovery Points! Front and Rear the "tow" hooks aren't rated or good for vehicle recovery. We're going off-road, recovery points are important 2. X - Mode selector button/switch not integrated into the touchscreen. We're in the backwoods, don't want a screen crack or freeze and can't use the advanced 4x4 3. Locking Diff. Would help keep the wheel spin down when climbing 4. Factory Tow Hitch Installation option (not dealer installed) 5. Remote Start on key fob - just what I need ANOTHER phone app /s 6. Accessory Mounting/Routing - not just Subaru but all should put easier cable paths. Cable run for dashcam, accessible firewall routes, front to rear for dash camera or CB/Ham antenna, Roof to Hood, and with airbags in mind, good mounting points near the dash for phone/tablet The Ascent has good cameras and a rear view mirror screen camera so not sure why that didn't make it down as an option. Also agree the rear hatch needs a sensor bypass so it can be left open without power drain. I think some have said a small carabiner can be put into the hatch lock to trick it showing closed

It has a real light shortage, entering the vehicle in the dark.. the rear camera is brutal, I live in the country we don’t have street lights so backing up is impossible..I wouldn’t want to be off roading with that camera and the lack of lighting on it.. I probably won’t keep this 24 wilderness because of this.. with a price tag in Ontario of $55,000 all said and done the car isn’t perfect

Another pet peave is the vehicle is rated to tow 3500 lbs however Subaru only puts a 1000 lb Hitch on it 3500 not available and by law if you tow over 1k you need trailer brakes and a 7pin hitch. Subaru doesn't have the 7 pin hitch for the Outback however even in the owners manual it says when towing over 1k you need trailer brakes. So the advertised towing capacity of the outback its technically a lie Subaru will not install a 7 pin hitch which is needed to tow more than 1k.

As an Aussie waiting for the Australian version of the Outback Wilderness to grace our shores - well that would be VERY welcomed DownUnder. But of course it’s wishful thinking. Subaru are only making token gestures to the Subaru ‘enthusiasts’… Nothing substantial will ever happen with the transmissions or low-range wise - because it’s at most 15% of the perceived market for the Outback. It’s just such a shame that they don’t offer these things as optional upgrades. You know - to allow the vehicle to reach its full potential… IMHO it’s still an ‘Outback’ in name only… and until there’s a change in the mindset of Subaru Japan and/or Subaru Australia - we’ll just be ignored…

I have not had my 24 OBW up to 80-85 mph.. but have a long road trip next week. I totally am with you regarding being able to easily disconnect those two features you mentioned. One would think the starter would go through hell if every time the car comes to a stop, the engine isn’t engaged. Also, definitely need a ac outlet. I would like for the OBW to get rid of the piano black shine on the dash/shifter along with a screen protector. Easy mod, but think it could be easily done. Another thing, many people car camp and would be nice to see rear seats lay completely flat and front seats able to move forward more. All in all , I love my ride and these are all minor issues.. thanks for all the content- learned a lot from your channel.

Our Prius (and I'd imagine all other hybrids) start and stop the engine all the time, but it's so smooth and seamless that you don't even notice. You really have to get the technique down in the Subaru to get smooth re-starts.

Had her at 80-85mph, no issues in Smokey Mountains. However, on another note, I wanted to ask if you should keep your coolant level always at the fill line when car is not running. Mine is already nearing the low line, but unfortunately I didn’t check the level when they sold me the car two months ago. If it was on the fill line when sold, should it drop that much in two months time? I didn’t see any coolant leakage anywhere. Lastly, what is average open temperature range when driving? Any info is appreciated. Merry Christmas all

I thought that my outback 2015 had a 110 volt. First time OB owner 2015. Blue gray metallic and just named her Pearl!!! We went car camping in it two weeks after my purchase but at 44 degrees I have decided it needs to be 55 degrees. and probably under 70 to be comfy overnight in car. Yes I’ve noticed camera and sad to hear it has not improved or the 110 outlet.

I chose the Forester as the roof rails on the Outback is useless for my purposes, so that is a big gripe I have with the Outback. I also prefer physical buttons rather than a big screen and the 2021 Forester fortunately still have that and a CD player as well which is awesome. As for common issues with both vehicles, yes the auto stop/start feature is a universal gripe every owner has. I hate it and would like it off by default. I'd rather save my engine and starter motor than save on gas. My understanding is that it can be set to turned off by default using a diagnostic tool plugged into the OBD2 port. And yes, the Hold should be on by default. Never had issues so far with the CVT cruising at 80-85 mph yet, but I am worried about CVT issues in the future and general longevity of these transmissions. I would much rather have a manual transmission. My last car had one and it lasted almost 300 K miles and it was not the transmission that failed. They make cars last way longer and you have so much more control. AC outlet would be nice as well. I have an 1800W power station and 200W solar panel that I use off the beaten path so I am pretty much set there. I suspect the reluctance of putting one in is the danger of discharging your car battery too much especially when the engine is not running. As for the poor camera quality. Well, mine only has a rear camera as it is the Premium trim but it seems ok to me. I frankly don't use it too much as I find the actual distances to look distorted so I prefer to just look back when I am backing up. Old habit I suppose as well. I would have preferred the wilderness trim but it's just too expensive for what you are getting. I think the Premium will suit my needs ok as I'll stick to just roads including rough roads and not actually off-roading. It has better mpg as well.

Great video! After 15 months and 30K miles the only real issues I have had are a hatred of nanny electronics like the auto stop- start annoyance and I also find that the cvt really sucks on hilly asphalt twisty roads. It seems to gear down and roar which is super irritating. Other than that piano black interior trim shows all kinds of dust scratches. Your last comments regarding the Subaru performance enthusiasts resonated with me. That’s really the only reason I purchased the Wilderness. As a performance car owner over the past 50 years I was amazed at how well the 2.4 runs even mated to the cvt. What a great balance of speed, safety and in your face looks. It’s always a blast to drive and mine sees WOT driving on a frequent basis. Thanks again for putting out great OBW videos !!

23 OBW owner here, I can definitely agree with you on the camera notes and the German hunting every now and then. I also hope for an update for the auto start and vehicle hold functions especially since the screen is somewhat laggy when we first start up the car. I'm hoping for future cars they can add the AC vented front seats and also add an extra camera in the rear that we could view in the rear view mirror like how Toyota has their option for that. Considering most OBW owners are landing up their camping gear or whatever in the back which would make the standard rear view mirror ineffective to see behind us while driving.

I nearly fell off my chair laughing when the first thing you mentioned were the cameras.. I totally agree that the resolution on these is abysmal. We were looking at the OBW in 2022 and I mentioned this to the sales person who laughed and shrugged it off. Then we showed her that our 9 year old BMW i3 had what looked like 4x the resolution. She couldn't believe it. There is absolutely no excuse for this on Subarus end. Between this and the auto start/stop I was out. I realize there is an aftermarket solution to that but why, on a brand new car do we need to start doing this. All the items you mention are super valid, not just to enthusiasts but to the masses. We all want better cameras, a way to turn features on/off and have them stay in that state, a 120v outlet in the back, etc. It's an outback, people use these for outback things, dogs, cottages, trips, etc. Fix these things or lose your customer base. Once Subaru gets back in-line with what we like/want I'm back in. I always admire the OBW when I see one on the road and have owned many Subies in the past. I would love one, but they need to get a little more sorted first. Keep up the great content!

I have had issues when slowing down. The cvt seems to be jerking the car to find the right gear to be in. When I talked to the dealership about it, I was told that it was due to the simulated gear shifts. Which I'm my opinion is stupid to have because its a cvt. The dealership said that to many people complained to Subaru that they didn't feel there car was shifting, so they added the simulated gears. My hope is that they add a normal automatic transition back as a future option, but I'm that is just a dream.

I have a '24 Outback Wilderness. I know the screen was updated as you mentioned in a previous video, so perhaps you haven't discovered this yet. However, you are able to shuffle the homescreen tabs around on the '24. Even change from first & second screen. I moved the tab for auto vehicle hold to the main 1st page homescreen so it's right there above the auto stop/start so can quickly hit both during start-up. Totally agree both should remain as they were though. That being said, you can get an aftermarket module that keeps the auto start/stop on whatever setting you left it on. Autostop Eliminator is the brand. I believe around $100 US.

Thanks for making the video - these things need to be said. I think the OBW is darned-near a perfect vehicle save for a few issues. Not sure I agree with you on all points (the AC outlet is a non-issue for me), but the auto stop/start is definitely a biggie that needs addressing. As for the vehicle cameras, the only thing I can think of is that they're using low-resolution, but large pixel, sensors for light sensitivity/contrast. Though the images are grainy in low light, I do notice that movement shows up exceptionally well. I have no data on that... it's just a guess.

I totally see where you're coming from (except for the camera - this is my 1st car with a backup camera and I think its pretty good compared to older camera equipped cars I've driven), but Subaru is NOT Jeep. JEEP = "Just Empty Every Pocket"! You have to pay for those extras. Subaru needs to keep their base and Premium models affordable - that's one of the reasons Subaru is popular as a VALUE brand (even if a lot of buyers go for higher trim levels). My biggest wish is that Subaru spend a few dollars more and give us a better/faster processor for the Touch-Screen. I agree about the 'Auto-Stop/Start' deactivation. hey man i have a little over 7K miles on my 2024 OBW. I just drove over 700 miles to Florida this past weekend, and for quite some time my vehicle felt like it was hunting for gears when i was driving around 60-65 mph and pissing me off lol. it went away after a while, but not sure if you have felt that round that speed as well. I also wish they made a simpler way to add lights etc. and get through the firewall with some sort of grommet specifically allowing for such mods.

I've noticed all these things, and would be happy to see them all changed. The biggest gripe to me though is the "gear hunting" feeling you mention, and I've noticed at even lower speeds (down into the 60 mph range at times). I've got just over 5k on mine, and am trying to notice more when it occurs so I can report it to the dealership during a future service.

I am looking to become a 1st time Subaru owner. I'm currently trying to decide between the Outback and Forester. In all of my "research" - primarily YT videos and forums, these issues are my biggest concerns. I own a 2016 Sorento that I bought new in 2015. The camera on the Kia blows the Subaru camera out of the water. AND I currently have an AC outlet. I'm seriously concerned about losing that option. I am a home health nurse and use it almost daily because I use a tablet for work which inevitably needs recharging frequently. Also, I am a tactile person and hate the idea of touch screen for everything. Lastly, since I work out of my car, the lack of console storage space is quite off-putting. I know these are all small gripes, but make a huge difference. Despite this, every Subaru owner I've ever met speaks so highly of them that I want in on the secret. But the concerns you mention have me a little hesitant to pull the trigger. Hopefully Subaru hears the cries of their loyals and make some changes.

I've never had to use the car for your intended purpose, but even with all the gripes I genuinely enjoy this car. You can have the dealer add a 110 outlet if it's a must. Thanks for the comment and sorry if it wasn't more helpful!

( The auto stop start feature I believe is more for pollution when many cars are sitting in traffic rather than fuel savings) I also run an inverter on my Subaru with a deep discharge battery, the CCA is not as good , but the staying power for inverter use is there, don't know if this pulling a lot of 110 hurts the alternator though, I heard it might. - Cameras are definitely a first world problem. We've been reversing, including with trailers without cameras for years, cameras are meant just a helpful tool, not a replacement for driving skills. - The auto start / stop tells more about the users than the designers. If you stop the car and hold the brake pedal gently, the engine doesn't stop, it will stop if you press it a but harder, so it's an option, even when it's ON. It comes from many countries requiring that idling cars do not produce any emissions. - Yes, at certain speeds the CVT is snooping around for a perfect ratio and it is truly annoying.

The problem with my auto stop is it seems to use too many factors to decide whether it auto stops or not, and is extremely inconsistent. Everyone tells me what you said, and I know where the pedal needs to be for it to activate, and it only activates maybe 15% of the time.

I work in heavy so I could be incorrect but I know that the auto transmissions offered across all types there were nearly monthly or bi-monthly updates to the software for them that drastically changed how they operated for the better for the first year or two the model came out especially for new trans setups, also we could slightly change the shift mapping depending what the customer wanted (ie heavy haul, soft or aggressive shift, fuel econ). Things a lot more on lock in the consumer world but a trip to the dealer might help clarify if these are possible

I do not like the outdated dash gauges and way to big screen as it gets in the way of controls mounted lower. It gets an easy 28 mpg. It actually sits an inch higher off the ground than my 2018 CRV. If I could take the gorgeous dash, gauges etc out of the Honda and bolt it all into a Subaru I would do it. That big of a difference. The Honda gauges are big clear and perfectly legible at all times. Never really thought much of the camera in my Crosstrek but now you have me seriously wondering about it.

So I've had my 2023 OBW since March. I take it offroading quite a lot and i've upgraded many things to make the vehicle more capable. Heres my take and/or solutions. 1) The backup camera has been decent with brighter diode dynamics backup lights, but definitely worse quality than even my old 1080p dashcam. 2) In terms of having a 120V outlet, i have an Ecoflow delta max which is always plugged into 12V. Its bluetooth controllable and I run a lot of electronics off it. 3) Cobb is planning on something for the outback wilderness in 2024. They already have a tune for the ascent which has the same engine, transmission, diff. 4) I installed the autostop start eliminator the 2nd day I owned the car. Hasnt been an issue since. 5) Never experienced the 80-85mph gear hunt issue, and I regularly bring the car to around 117 mph. The anti wobble mount solved a lot of transmission issues in my use case at lower speeds. 5th gen 4runners hunt for gears all the time, so i guess im just used to it?:😅 6) The 2025 Forester/Explorer looks whack, and I really hope that the design language doesnt translate into new model years. Outbacks.

You mentioned the auto start-stop. I have no idea what really happens nor do I know if something else gets "injured", so take this with a grain of salt. On my 2020 Forester, open the hood and look at a semi-small negative wire that trails off toward the car's center. That wire, (on my car), has a simple disconnect on it. If you disconnect the wire, the auto start-stop doesn't work on the engine. Everything shows up on your dash and it seems to work but the engine still runs. I have no idea what is happening and also do not know if something in the engine is getting damaged. That is the only reason that I reconnected the negative wire, my unknowing. although it does make my car not stall out. for about a week I separated the wire and nothing seemed to get damaged. As I said before, do not do this without figuring out what really happens or you could permanently damage your engine.

Right on!!! Cameras - check. The cameras do suck. Even the Nissan Leaf has 4 cameras (front/rear/ l&r Mirrors). AC Outlet - check. Missing. For a brand that prides itself as an Outdoor, Adventure, Camping, Family oriented car company, an AC outlet is almost mandatory. Auto Start/Stop and AVH feature - check. Owners should have the option to Enable/Disable these features. They are very confusing. Gear hunting around 80-85 MPH, I haven't noticed it. Maybe characteristic of their CVT. Subaru should have a channel for Owners to give Feedback and SERIOUSLY consider to implement.

Auto vehicle start/stop is the dumbesst feature on modern ICE cars today. Yes, the 8 speed is running out of control drving on mountain roads! My 2022 Outback Premium is always needed to jumpstart after parking 6 weeks!

1. Low quality cameras 2. Lack of 110 AC outlet 3. Start/stop always on and has to be turned off and AVH always off and has to be turned on 4. At 80-85 mph transmission feels like it is hunting for “gears” Not sure what this means with a CVT, does this mean the RPMs are bouncing around? 5. Ignore the enthusiast driver and taking their coolest cars away

@@roamingwithjosh eeeeg. I have a 2024 touring XT as a loaner from the dealer as they replace the center diff in my forester. I'm trying to decide on whether to keep the paid for forester or bite the bullet and get a outback wilderness. Sounds like I'm heading off to the interstate and doing 85. I often find myself in states where the speed limit is 80, so driving at 85--while technically speeding--isn't a guaranteed ticket like it is in my home state where the top speed limit is 70.
@zimmejoc

and to close the loop. I drove it at 83 mph and know what you mean. The RPMs remain stable, but it feels too light or floaty or something that is bothersome but hard to define. Worse yet, is every so often at that speed is it feels like the tires pull harder for a split second. Couple that with the overly aggressive eyesight system when the cruise is engaged tugging at the wheel has me thinking stick with the older forester.

I just traded in my 2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited with 179k miles on the clock and picked up a new Mazda 3 AWD Premium sedan. I thought the Impreza had the makings of a decent sporty sedan until Subaru killed it, rather than giving it a decent powertrain! But the CVT just kind of kills it for me even if you could get more displacement or a turbocharger.

I have a 22 OBW. I was at the dealership getting an oil change the other day, and I was browsing the 24s while I waited. They were offering a 1.9% and I honestly started to consider trading mine for a 24. I have a white one, and I want to switch it up for blue or grey. Looking over the new models, I was happy to see the better HK sound system, but besides that, I ultimately decided against it due to the lack of new innovations/ improvements. Overall, I've enjoyed my 22 OBW after driving nearly 70k miles, but I agree with all the points you're making.

I have a new 2024 Outback Touring and I have comments on the following issues: 1. Cameras - my cameras all seem fine except the review mirror camera; it is almost unusable at night. The other cameras are just about the same as other cars I have with cameras. 2. The auto on/off - I don't feel like it's overly rough or clunky when using, I leave it on and it seems to save me about 7/10's of a gallon of gas with each tank of gas. I recently sold a 3 series BMW, and that car had a clunky auto on/off, so much so I would turn it off every time I got in the car. 3. The max speed limit in my state is 65 MPH so I have never had my car up to 80-85 MPH and probably never will. 4. The 110v outlet comment - That makes sense, I have one of those in my Jeep JL Wrangler and it's nice to have, I've used it many times, Subaru should add this feature, it would be easy for them to do so. 5. The AVH - Totally agree, having to turn that on each time you get in the car is ridiculous. I moved that icon to the first page of my screen but even then, I always forget to turn it on. My friend has an OBD2 tool, I'm going to see if he can plug that in and find a setting to keep that on all of the time. He's done other things like this for me before, like changing the program so that the fog lights will stay on when the bright lights are on and things like that.

Easy way to aviod the auto start/stop is when you come to a stop, ease up on the brake pressue. There is a point where you can hold the car still using the brakes and the auto start/stop won't activate. I have done this for almost 20k miles on my 22 OBW.
@daretobe957

Auto start/stop only makes sense on mild hybrid vehicles. It does save quite some gas on my cx90 but I believe mild hybrid plays such an important role - engine stops when I'm going downhill and there's no vibration issue in that use case.

Subaru leadership could benefit from some cultural change. I fully respect Subaru is not a large company and is reticent to make many changes to production vehicles but this could be an opportunity for improvement. Your Korean competitors (Hyundai and Kia appear to listen to reviews of their products on social media/customers and make small improvements on a faster timetable. Some things have to wait for the next refresh but for the most part little irritating things are addressed far quicker. Known issues must be addressed quicker or Subaru will lose loyal customers to others.

Yes, the AVH and auto start stop are quite annoying, also I swear I saw that some models let you adjust the collision warning for far, normal and close. I can't find that on my 24 OBW and I feel the default setting is to sensitive in urban areas and would love to adjust it.

@@roamingwithjoshjust something else that I actually emailed directly to Subaru. Since we have the big screens and when you activate the front camera it only uses half the screen why can’t the other half be the rear camera. Front camera on top half and rear camera on bottom. Might as well put that big screen to use

It is on the right side of the wheel where the advanced cruise control button are you’ll notice it on your secondary screen on the dashboard behind the wheel there will be lines. The long of the lines are the further the car in front of you will be the shorter the lines are the closer the car will be in the computer will know the breakslower or quicker works well fiddle around with it you’ll get used to it. Good luck.

24 OBW first time Subaru owner. I see your point with the camera. It absolutely is outdated. I enjoy your videos and watched alot before buying so I’m going to pay it back by giving you a tip. Photographer to photographer🙋‍♀️ use that pesky auto start /stop thing and the brake hold thing when your out shooting. Pretty nice to slide up on an owl and have the car go silent and the car staying stopped wild you snatch your lens and pivot in your seat. The rest of the time I turn that stuff on but handy for this wildlife photographer . I do not like the CVT transmission. The reason is because I’m a mnt chick and when I’m driving down my icy canyon road I like to just put it in a low gear and not use my brakes. The manual mode with this in a lower gear gives you some drag but not nearly enough. No I do not want to x mode to use that drag all the time, maybe on occasion, but not on the daily. I am also already tired of hand washing and drying this thing. That said I had and still do have my 06 4Runner with 260+ thousand miles. Never let me down. Paint is still good. Purrs like a kitten! So the Subaru has a lot to live up to. Thanks for your videos!
