Drain and fill of the CVT transmission fluid on a Gen 4 2012 Subaru Outback with the 2.5i PZEV motor. The process should be the same on 2010-2014 Subaru Outbacks. Remove drain plug and drain fluid approx 5.5 quarts will come out Add approx 4.5 quarts, that is about all you will be able to get in before it starts spilling our of the fill hole. Now you'll need to start car and cycle through gears and with engine idling and in park to distribute the fluid and now you will be able to add the remaining 1 quart. Done. Please give a thumbs up if you find this helpful.

I did a 2nd drain and fill today and used my Motiv power filler to add the transmission fluid. Much much easier and the whole process took only about 15 minutes.

Great video but let me add something if I may. You mentioned the amount you took out and obviously the amount you'll put back in but, unless you're looking at a shop manual for exact instructions on how to do this (this is crucial for DIYers) you will not be aware that the car will only allow you to add approx 4 quarts back in and you will think oh, well, there must have been too much fluid in there, to begin with. After turning the car on, cycling through the gears, and letting the trans get up to temp, and while the car is running, can you add the additional 1.5-2 quarts. So, boys and girls, why is this important? If you decided to drive the car without the exact amount of CVT fluid (or close to it) you can, you guessed it, ruin your CVT.

Well what I'll be doing I think is just drain 4 quarts and stick that plug back in before the extra drains out, drive it around and so it again in a month or so. Even cycling the gears with a little less fluid might possibly do a little harm so why risk it? Just get your hands dirty ;)

The factory warrenty ends at 100k so honestly, at that point you can do whatever you want with your car. I have been told that you should never change CRT fluid because the particles from the disc of the clutches helps it shift. I was also told its best to change the fluid anyways. Its frustrating at best because you dont get Subaru giving any clear answers. We will be towing a small pop up camper with our Subaru this summer. Some say not to tow anything with a Subaru others say a smaller camper will not hurt it. I plan on changing mine at 100k.

@mrflorida55
@mrflorida55 Год назад
Lets repeat what you said..."particles from the disc of the clutches helps it shift." You can't believe that. There is no way particles of metal help gears mesh. Don't believe what you are told. Sounds like something someone who sells cars would say. Also a CVT does not have clutches so there are less particles and as sated here the trans warranty for many Subaru's was extended to 100K min. So if you change the fluid before then you will void the warranty.
@PatrickOnDemand
@PatrickOnDemand Год назад
@@mrflorida55 dear sir, transmissions with the disc style fraction areas would do exactly that. That friction material wears off and becomes held in suspension in the fluid. This happens because the fluid was never changed, hence the old mechanic adage "100k miles on the tranny with proof of service, dont do it" if the transmission had a drain and fill every 30k miles, it would never have this problem. You are correct, a CVT doesn't have that style of friction but the internal components probably have surfaces that degrade with a lack of system service and maintenance.
@PatrickOnDemand
@PatrickOnDemand Год назад
A transmission should have a drain and fill every 10k miles or a complete system flush every 40k miles. After 8 years of professional shop experience, I have noticed the tranny fluid is the most neglected fluid and often the transmission is a leading cause of scrapping a car or trading it in. Transmission fluid breaks down with time and HEAT. There is no such thing as tranny fluid that lasts the life of the transmission.

This is a stupid process and youtube should discard this video. Before the draining of this gearbox, as the engine is stopped since some time, half of the oil which fills the torque converter flows back into the gearbox : approximately 1.5 quarters. This quantity is drained out and is part of the quoted 5.5 quarters in the pan. If the filling of the gearbox with the gearbox is done at cold temperature, motor stopped, one of the two following things will happen. Either the level in the box was way too low before the operation, and our guy will succeed in filling 5.5 quarters in his gearbox. Or the level was ok, or slightly too low, and the refilling with the pump will not succed : oil will reflow if the hose has a smaller diameter as the filling hole, or an incontrollable quantity will leak out when retiring the hose and putting in place the plug. The only way to put exactly the same quantity of oil than the one drained out is to start the engine, so that the pump in the gearbox sends oil in the torque converter and fills it, which allows room in the gearbox for the volume of oil previously drained. Nevertheless, this process doesn't allow to check if some oil has been lost since the last leveling of the gearbox. In case of an old vehicle with some leaks, applying this method a few times will finally bring to driving with a too low oil level in the gearbox and a failure.

you are correct, there is no simple way to get all of the fluid out, this is a drain and fill procedure. I was able to drain 5.5 quarts and fill 5.5 quarts. After a month or so I did a 2nd drain and fill. With 2 drain and fills you will have approximately 75% new CVT fluid mixed with 25% of the old fluid.
@PorscheCarreraS
@PorscheCarreraS 6 лет назад
Yes, I stated clearly in the video will be able to drain 5.5. quarts outs. This is a drain and fill procedure where we are essentially draining about half of the fluid and replacing with fresh fluid. After a week or so I did a second drain and fill. With a drain and fill X 2 the rough math says that approximately 75% of the fluid is "fresh" CVT fluid.

@@buixote See, it'd make sense to replace a transmission filter (and I truly wish Subaru had included a synthetic fiber trans. filter), but in the case of the TR690 at least, the 'filter' is just a mesh screen to filter large particles. (70$ at my dealer) But I suppose if you have large particles going through your trans. you have bigger problems than needing a new filter bahaha. The equivalent to changing the filter on that transmission would be to just clean off the magnet situated in the pan.

2009 Porsche Carrera 4S thanks for the response. I'll consider it this summer then. Still torn between the "ambient" temp drain and fill versus using an IR thermometer on the pan. You assume that it is at the appropriate level to begin with if you just do a drain and fill right? Next time I'm buying a stick. So much less complicated!
@PorscheCarreraS
@PorscheCarreraS 7 лет назад
Yes, to do an ambient temp drain and fill you are assuming that the fluid level is at an appropriate level to begin with. In my case the CVT was running fine and I chose the ambient drain and fill because I figured if I drain 5 quarts of old fluid and replace with exactly the same amount I would minimize any potential errors in under and overfilling. I'm not convinced that using an IR thermometer on the transmission case is necessarily an accurate reflection of the fluid temperature.

This is not the correct way to service a transmission. You should always replace the filter. Remove the oil pan , clean the magnet in the pan. And clean the mating surfaces, and make a gasket or use RTV between the steel pan and aluminum transmission. And then fill the pan with fresh oil until it run out of the fill oil port. Disconnect the two oil lines from the radiator. Disconnect the return line from from the side of the transmission and thoroughly clean that line with brake cleaner and compressed air to remove all contamination. Place a pan under and exhaust line start the engine and flush all the used dirty contaminated oil from the torque converter and and moving inner components. To properly do this 2 to 3 gallons of oil is recommended. I strongly recommend a transmission cooler and a I line canister transmission filter this is time consuming and not that expensive. The objective to protect the transmission at all costs. A very good canister filter can be easily changed any time you want with out the mess.....Good luck and thank you for your patience..

+Mark Edwards Don't think so, Mark. How does a CVT need to have the wheels turning to circulate oil, that is the pumps function? The wheels in motion will only engage the gearing, but the oil is already circulating through the cooler and T/C, for obvious reasons. As soon as you turn the engine on, the pump will activate and circulate the fluid through the cooler and torque converter. What happens when you've worked the tranny extremely hard (like climbing a mountain) and you have the car running, but stationary for some reason, how is the oil cooled if the vehicle isn't moving?
