This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the 2022 Subaru Outback and the 2022 Subaru Forester. Both the Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback compete against each other in the compact SUV category but come at it from a different approach. The Outback is based on a station wagon platform and the Forester is more of a traditional compact SUV. The Outback is 8.6” longer than the Forester offering more cargo capacity behind the second row and overall cargo space. The Forester offers half an inch more front legroom and they have about the same second row space. Both have a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine matched to a CVT, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. But, the Outback has a second engine option, a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. These Subaru’s come with standard AWD and you can use regular fuel. The Forester and Outback shine off-road in more challenging winter driving conditions with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and an X-mode driving setting which includes, trail capability and hill descent. X-mode compliments Subaru’s symmetrical full-time AWD system giving drivers the confidence to take the road less travelled. With its all-road capability and rugged performance uneven pavement, deep snow or even challenging inclines will be much easier to tackle. The Outback comes with a few more standard features like a heated steering wheel and a power driver’s seat compared to the Forester but the base model is priced slightly higher. The Outback also has a larger 7” touchscreen and an available 11.6” touchscreen compared to the Forester’s standard 6.5” and available 8”. There is a new Wilderness trim for the Forester and Outback giving these vehicles a more rugged style with extra ground clearance to help tackle harsh terrain in stride. The interior has all weather soft touch water repellent upholstery, rubber floor mats, all weather second row seat backs and the Wilderness logo on headrests. The Forester starts at $29,495 CAD/$25,195 USD, the Wilderness is $38,995 CA/$32,820 USD and the top Premier model is $40,595 CAD/$35,295 USD.
The Outback starts at $31,195 CAD/$27,145 USD (base engine), the Wilderness model with the turbo engine is $41,995 CAD/$37,195 USD and the top Premier XT trim is $44,195 CAD/$40,195 USD Touring XT.

I don't tend to keep cars for very long. Marzda3 GT = 3 years, WRX = 4 years, Honda Civic = 2 years. But my Subaru Outback is the exception: currently at 6 years, pushing 7! I will never let go of this car!!! I have two kids: ages 3 and 6. This thing eats up baby/kid gear and all our errands at once. Plus, it's a dream to drive in snowy Ottawa. I cannot recommend this vehicle enough... OUTBACK = AMAZING!

I ordered an outback back in January. I was leaning more towards the forester at first, but after test driving the outback. I decided that was were I wanted to be. I did prefer the feeling of driving a car and having the capability of an SUV. Also the wilderness looked deadly in all black 😉

When you did your side by side test drives, what specifically did experience with cabin noise at freeway speeds Forester vs Outback? Also, did you experience less cabin noise with the Turbo vs Aspirated engine?

Last November (2021) I bought my wife an Outback for her commuter car and we use it as our road car. This is our first Subaru. It requires more maintenance than my Toyota Rav 4WD Limited. Though I’ve always enjoyed my Rav our Outback is superior in handling and traction in all driving conditions. We average 5-6 feet of snow every winter. 4WD or AWD is mandatory to get up our private road and into our garage during the winter. The 3.5 V6 with 269hp is faster than the Outback and gets better fuel economy. Overall, when our Outback wears out, we’ll replace it with another Outback. When our Rav wears out, if Subaru offers a non plug-in hybrid, I’ll buy a Forester Touring. If Subaru doesn’t offer a hybrid, then we’ll buy a Toyota Venza.

Quite possibly the most cross shopped vehicles, within one brand, in the automotive market. I’m not surprised the the Forester wins the battle year-over-year, it is one hell of a product. Especially for the Subaru fans. Though… I agree with Zack, absolutely hands down… the Outback. The cargo, ease of load (especially on top!), the look, the car-like handling, the tech, etc. makes it an easy winner. I’m just not sure I could ‘get into’ the looks of those Wilderness trim models. Thanks for another brilliant comparison video.

It's clearly not a hell of a product given the worldwide sales figures. Its niche and not desired by most due to others being a much superior all round package.

I choose the Forester because the driving experience is uniq! Huge windows, confortable and a large sunroof. I prefer the smallest screen with buttons than the big one the Outback, Legacy and WRX. Simple switch for the heating seats! The fuel is so expensive, I don’t want a turbo. 7.2 l/100km on highway.

I'm personally in the Outback camp myself. Just as the Outback started life as a Legacy wagon and shared the interior of that, the Forester was a crossover version of the Impreza and shared the Impreza's interior. I always liked the Legacy/Outback interior far more than the Impreza/Crosstrek/Forester.

I prefer forester than outback and as a forester owner, I love the higher and great visibility and extremely functional screen panel with buttons. It gives me more confident when driving. Certainly more power and bigger screen on outback is better, but regular 2.5L is way enough on regular city commute. Plus when driving in the city, fuel economy is more important than powerful engine, and it is easier to park in a tight space compare to outback. If I need a bigger SUV, I will go with ascent.

Honestly it’s depending on really what people like. I’m more of a fan of the outback mainly due to the carrying capacity and the look. Not a fan of the boxy look with the forester. But both are comfortable and great cars to drive

Great review guys! Test drove both of these vehicles last summer and preferred the ride of the Outback. Just one question though - anyone have a reason why the Outback scores 10 points less in the JD Power reliability scores. 71/100 for Outback and 81/100 for the Forester. They both use the 2.5L boxer and have the same 4wd system. Is the larger turbo engine in the Outback lowering the rating? Has that engine had problems?? Not sure why the big difference in reliability ratings!!

I have a feeling it's partly because of the large touchscreen in the Outback. The Forester doesn't have that screen. People have been complaining that it's slow to respond and unintuitive.

My wife has a 2014 Forester with manual trans and I really enjoy driving it. I just bought a 2022 Outback Onyx. I would probably preferred a manual, if available, but I'm getting used to the CVT. Never drove a turbo before, but really like the power. I don't want to say my wife hates my Outback, but she much prefers her Forester. I came out of a '99 Chrysler 300M that I drove for almost 23 years (300M was still running great and donated to a lady at church who desperately need a car). After living with a car that long, you almost feel a part of the car. With all the tech in the Outback, it was a big departure from the 300M and I don't yet have the same comfort level. But I do love the turbo power and handling, which I feel is outstanding on the Outback. Thanks for the great vid. Confirms that either choice would have been a winner. By the way, my wife hates the big screen and I love it.

I've always preferred the Outback over the Forester. The Forester is a great car, but the Outback rides and drives a bit better and I think it's more comfortable. I also personally find the styling of the Forester to be a bit dorky. I prefer the wagon look of the Outback.

Love your channel and content! I just purchased a 2022 Forester Premium in autumn green metallic and I am absolutely in love with it, so yay Andrea! :-) I, too, love the open feel of the Forester, the incredible visibility, the higher SUV seating position, the MPG, and that incredibly HUGE moonroof! It drives beautifully, esp. for an SUV. I used to want the Outback, but I owned a stationwagon for plenty of years, and wanted something different. Cheers, Zack and Andrea! Oh, and I previously owned a 1984 Subaru Hatchback for about 10 years, which was a little FWD champ. 42 MPG highway from a little 1600cc engine with a 4-speed manual transmission, and she also drove and handled securely and confidently on the wet, snowy, and icy roads to ski resorts.

I’ve got the 2021 Outback XT Touring .. the turbo engine has ample power and the handling is great. Versatile, fully loaded including ventilated front seats which was a must . I use the voice controls, STARLINK remote start with air conditioning and great sound system . Love the metallic green / Napa leather combination . 13,000 comfortable miles to date .. I rarely go off road but when I do it gave no issues and I have slept in the back with the rear seats down !. I love the apple car play google maps in large format on the screen .. I have experienced the reboot of the head system due to apple car play glitch , I believe there’s now an update that might address this which I will do soon .. For me it was the best value decision for desert living ..

I bought a 2022 Outback in December. I have looked at both these cars for a bunch of years now and the Outback was pretty much my choice primarily because of the layout of the rear cabin. The Forrest is taller but the Outback is deeper and as such, has a longer load floor. I drove a Toyota Rav4 for almost eight years and it worked well for me but it was often to the cramped side. The Outback corrects that for me at this point. As for the 11.5 inch screen, I like the look of it but it is often tedious to operate. At times, it can be annoyingly laggy in operation. Press a button and I've had it sit there up to 20 seconds before responding. That's not all the time but it's frustrating when it happens. The layout of the various features is also not very efficient. Radio functions are under one icon and all the other audio functions (bluetooth, CD, USB, iPhone, Aux, etc) are under another so if you want to go from listening to the radio to playing a CD, it could be up to three punches of the screen to get there. Some functions, the heated/ventilated seats for example, are accessed one layer deep in the menu system. That may not seem like much but it makes accessing them more tedious than they should be. Some of the selections are redundant and don't really need to be there. Subaru offers a driver monitoring system on it's upper lever trims to help keep the driver focused on the road, then they put this 11.5" tablet on the dash that can be the most distracting thing in the cabin. My Outback is a Premium trim. I went with that level because it was the lowest level I could option the blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert feature. I didn't mind the fact that it also included the large touch screen but in hind sight, if I could have gotten the blind spot monitoring on the base model, I'd go that way and skip the big touch screen all together. In spite of all I've just said, I'm quite happy with the car overall.

If Forester still offers XT turbo engine, it would be a difficult choice. Since Subaru is stupid enough to drop the turbocharged engine, or not so stupid since the sales volume actually risen with only a sluggish 2.5 normally aspirated engine. Outback 2.4T is a landslide winner in this pick. Since I always consider Outback as more of a wagon than an SUV, always good to choose a wagon > SUV.

Sorry Zach I’m with Andrea on this one🤣 The outback looks a little disproportionate to me. The Forester has classy styling, very symmetrical, and I love the brown interior that they offer with the panoramic sunroof. I know that you don’t care about panoramic sunroof‘s but it’s just odd that they don’t offer it on the outback. Plus the one you’re sitting in that wood actually looks very classy with the metal strip, just by the view of You 2 facing towards the back I would not guess it was a Subaru👌💯🙏 Update: I realized that you are probably in the Cayenne, foot in mouth, but the Subaru still looks nice on the inside lol

Forester for me. We bought the Crosstrek for my wife over the Outback due to it's super long body which we learned would NOT fit in our garage! That long body also affects the ride quality- I prefer to sit up higher and enjoy better handling and visibility. The Outback felt like I was driving a boat, likely due to a longer wheelbase. I had to watch my turning distances and being in the city, I have to be able to parallel park which the Outback would make a bit more challenging. BTW why don't either of these come in a hybrid option?

Sitting higher in an SUV may seem a good idea, better view down the road, for the driver , yet bringing a vehicle' center of gravity higher, may bring a few adverse effects, like a rollover and weight transfers in case of an accident ... The road safety car avoidance maneuver, the ''Moose car test'' is usually better done with a car, than an SUV ! However, at an intersection , setting higher in an SUV could be beneficial in case of a side collision crash if being hit by a car ! However, that was probably true a few years ago, nowadays, most vehicles being SUVs , the advantage/asset is perhaps gone. It's complicated !

I did like the Turbo Engine in the Outback Wilderness, but not the small sunroof or big infotainment screen. I prefer the one touch knobs, buttons, and switches in the Forester, panoramic sunroof, massive windows, and smaller screen. The S mode acceleration mode gives me the power I need to merge and pass on the highway. I also prefer the bigger cabin and cargo height in the Forester. Having been a passenger in the back on long trips in station wagons of my youth, I will also avoid memories of childhood trauma. :) Thanks for doing a head-to-head comparison together, Andrea and Zack! I just got my 2022 Forester in dark green that I ordered back in January, it took about 3 months to come in. I traded in my 2019 Forester and got more for my trade than what I paid for the car when new. I compared the Forester and Outback but that terrible touch screen on the Outback was the dealbreaker for me. The Forester is just easier to live with in the real world. As for the turbo, the Forester has more than enough power for me. I don’t have to win every stoplight race to be happy….

I’ve always wanted someone to compare these two vehicles, and no one can do it from heart to heart like Andrea & Zack. My choice would be the better handling more spacious station wagon. Thank you!

Outback because of the turbo, better knee room and most of all the ventilated seats and CD player.

OB for us. Our 1st Subie was a used 2004 Forester. Since then had a 2010, 2015, & just got a 2022 Touring -- all with 2.5i. All towed our 2,000 lb fish n ski boat over Cascade passes without too much strain. None had any serious problems (but all were sold before 70,000 miles). We prefer OB for comfort, power passenger seat, power tail gate, & longer cargo area but you IMO you can't go wrong with either one.

The more upright stance for myself being tall and having back pain made the Forrester a winner for me. I took home a 2021. Only complaint is the cheapness of the interior. Window switches almost immediately broke. Otherwise; it does good in the snow and has enough clearance for my rural area, gets 30mpg, cvt feels nice, roof rack availability, not struggling with my back to sit in it. My truck feels amazing. I have a hard time sitting in cars. Forrester is a good in-between. I would like the extra hight of the wilderness model in a future purchase.

I'm shocked that a used 2019 Subaru Forester with 63,000+ Km sells for $35,490 + Tax. Is the warranty expired? I don't think Insurance will replace if stolen either - they won't with demos over 10,000Km. Seems like you will be paying almost NEW prices for it without peace of mind. I considered used, but decided to buy new instead. Tough market to find a deal on used vehicles right now.

Have two relatives who have late model Subarus, one Outback, one Forester. Both complain that the boxer engines burn oil, as much as a quart within 3k - 4k miles. That's anecdotal, but it's consistent with many commenters on RU-vid and other media reviews. Are there any studies of these Subaru engines to document the degree to which oil burning is an issue?

Thank you for all these comparisons, a real help. I like your work. And working as a team, provides often a different image/approach which again helps us with a final decision / choice. Not sure about the new design of the Outback, especially with the video' side view image at 3:33 ... .... too much plastic cladding up front and the bizarre shaped plastic cladding around the the front and back wheels... possibly, the grey color is not helping !

Like the Outback better. Bigger, more power and looks a bit more upscale than the Forester. Id rather a truck but with gas prices staying higher as the new norm for now and the foreseeable future id look at a mid size truck or Outback as its the only wagon that wont cost you an arm and a leg like The german wagons.
@97I30T
@97I30T 2 года назад
I too really want a truck. I've been looking at midsize pickups, but they're really expensive for what you're getting and they all get really lousy gas mileage. I'm leaning towards an Outback now because it costs a lot less than a brand new midsize pickup, it gets way better gas mileage, and has more interior space as well.

I rather like both of these, as Ive said before I have a Subaru soft spot. I’ve seen the outback and cross trek in higher ground clearance forms and imho they just don’t look great. The body style just doesn’t sit as well raised up as a more suv based vehicle. That being said I saw a Jetta made into a 4x4 and as ridiculous as it looked I loved it. Great review

I bought the Outback Wilderness 6 weeks ago. It's a surprising car, I love it... But...yes But, there a few annoying things. When you drive and need to start or stop Heating seats, you have to click twice to be able to do it. They should really keep it simple. 1-2-3 on-off button. Also, the AVH on the second screen, should be active till you disengage as the auto-shut-off for the motor. I have a lot more positive to say than negative, don't worry, It's a great vehicule. Winter wise... incredible !

I am looking into an Outback Premium , but a friend of mine just got a Mazda CX-5. It has a screen but all of the controls are on the console. I was surprised how much easier it is to use! Less distracting. But I have been obsessed with Outbacks for decades, can’t wait to get one!

Had a 2019 Outback Touring. Bounced and rolled too much but was quiet and smoothe. And not the new platform. Felt closed in too but a very easy drive. Now have a 22 Forester Sport. While not as refined as the Outback the suspension is better and outward visibility second to none. But I still love the room, speed, exonomy and fun of my 19 Impreza 5-dr. Maybe a new Crosstrek is next? Thank you, you two deliver great (white north) reviews!!! ❤️✌🏻🇨🇦

A lot of people here in the USA are afraid of turbo’s. In the past a lot of turbo’s from many different automobile manufacturers failed with reliability issues and they didn’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine. I personally have had 3 turbo’s and will never buy another one. They simply produce too much heat. We normally keep our vehicles for 15-20 years but we’re lucky if the turbo’s lasted 7 years. Most of them crapped out as soon as the warranty did. It’s just not worth it
