For people like me who have this same pump, this video doesn't show it, but if you remove the large circle clip you can remove the shaft with the bearing on it, and under that bearing is a seal that comes with the kit. Another thing that doesn't come with the kit is a 6203 bearing. If yours is shot, you can buy a new one for about $8 if you have a bearing store nearby or Ebay. I have lots of sockets and a large vise that I used to remove the bearing from the shaft and press the new one on. Don't try to hammer it on. same with the seal under the bearing. Press it in with a big socket.

I have to say, this is the best video on fixing things on a car I have ever seen. I will be replacing the pump in my 03 legacy outback. I know it's not exactly the same but, this gave me a better idea on how to do it. Thank you!

Thanks so much! Just rebuilt the pump. I pulled the seal on the front, even though mine was not leaking...and it appears to be a dust seal. No idea why it is not in the kit. Thanks for taking the time!

only thing i would do different is use a torque wrench to finish the bolts, to be fair you do have a cordless impact wrench. The Pneumatic ones tend to overtighten bolts. ;) great video!

Just finished the rebuild of my P/S pump for my ‘01 Forester. The pump on my Forester 2.5 L was a bit different with extra parts and some extra very smalls seals, but in general is similar to the one on this video. Important: the round area of the vines need to be facing out(all vines have a burnt mark which faces out). If you attempting this yourself, pay very close attention to the orientation(take a few pics) of the part which seats inside at the the oil pump housing through the shaft(the part that has a big seal under it). I ended up having to disassemble the pump again because of clicking sounds, since I had placed the inner part that seats at the bottom through the shaft 180 degrees from what it should have been. It’s all good now, it’s back on the car, no more clicking sounds or whining noises at all.

i just did this on my 99 OB today. one thing that is not seen on the vid is that the 1 st plate also has notches that need to need to be lined up for the rear plate pins to go through . it is possible to install the plate wrong and rear plate will still go on. the result will be a indent from the pin and no pump pressure. i figured it out when i took it apart again. now it works fine

I'm about to have to do this exact procedure on my 97 Legacy GT. This video is a lifesaver. Just waiting on the kit to arrive in the mail next week and I'll be rebuilding the pump. After that my only main issue will be the water leak inside. Clearly a drain tube somewhere is clogged but I can't find it.
@Alexrider02
@Alexrider02 4 года назад
Found the interior leak before I even got to fixing this problem. Turned out the sunroof's drain hose had gotten old and hard and slipped off of the nib, so the water was just draining down into my ceiling. Swapped on a new piece of rubber hose and it's worked like a charm since. Today's the first nice day in a week or two, so I'm gonna take the opportunity to try and pop my PS pump off and rebuild it before the rains come back. If I have time, I'm gonna try to flush my coolant while I'm at it, since I have the stuff to do it and don't think I've done it since I bought the car.
@SaveTheManuals
@SaveTheManuals 4 года назад
Very well made video, extremely helpful - thank you! Does all 100% of the PS fluid need to be removed from the system before removing the pump assembly? Or do you just try to remove as much as you can from the reservoir before disassembly?

7:27 yes, luckily, the nose of your pump wasn't leaking. Mine was and it's because that front seal is actually a full bearing with spindle pressed into the pump body. The front cover of the bearing on mine was falling out.

Hi,thanks for your videos; i have a question please: do you think that just the internal o rings,on any pump,when they set/deform can make the pump deliver less pressure,and make for a hard steering? i have a weak pump (i tried with another one --very easy to R and R ,Trooper 3.1TD--,and it's all good) that i opened,the o rings all have a set,i wonder it it's worth replacing just them,all hard parts look ok

Thanks for the great video, it's really been helpful. But I have run into one problem. I've removed the pump and am ready to install the new seals, but my pump (98 Outback) is leaking from the nose area (behind the pulley). I guess that is the nose seal you mentioned, but I don't know how to access that. Do I have to remove the bearing to replace the nose seal? Or do I have to remove and replace the whole bearing and shaft? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have some issues with my Subaru Power Steering, after replacing the track rod end and rack ends the steering wheel became a lot stiffer and now it doesn't want to return to the middle on it's own, as it used to be. It's only gets back to about 80% and the rest has to be done by hand. I replaced the fluid a few times already, but that didn't help. The belt is new as well, I can't really hear any whining noise coming out of it and there are only very minor leaks on the very top (small pipe), but overall the level is always high and doesn't go down. CAN anyone advise please?

Thanks for sharing. In my country they don't have rebuild kits for these pumps unfortunately. So I replaced all the O-rings and the bearing (the bearing was humming that's what started my rebuild). The plate seal and larger seals I cannot replace unfortunately. I asked the Subaru dealership what a new pump would cost and it is around 800 dollars........ Do you know if there is a proper drain to drain the transmission fluid from the pump and not spill anything? Thanks again!

The word rebuild here is a little loose? It’s just a reseal correct? Bad p/s pump at 200k 03 outback, I see different pump, not sure if leaking gonna check it out. Should I just get another one? I heard aftermarket ones can be trouble. My dad’s car is getting a noisy belt and mechanic said go replace it at around 600. I was hoping I could dig in there with and fix her up. I might consider a reseal kit if it’s just leaking or at the mileage just replace (bearings, other mechanical parts worn out?)

I'm debating if I should replace the leaking pump on my 2005 outback myself, I don't want to rebuild it. With the reservoir for it being in front of the passenger side wheel well, do I need to prime the pump and lines before stating the car, and how would I go about doing that? Is this a good idea if I've never done this before, I do have some experience with hydraulics systems and small engine work. Thank you.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+HellishGrin460 if you're replacing the pump all you really need to do is bolt the new pump in, attach the lines, and fill the system. Start the car with the front jacked up and supported by jack stands. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock left and right until you no longer hear whining. Top the fluid off to full in the reservoir and you're good. Check for leaks at hoses. Correct them if found.
@hellishgrin4604
@hellishgrin4604 7 лет назад
MrSubaru1387 thanks for the advice, what's your opinion on seafoam products? I can hear that the valves have started to click a bit, is there a good product out there to help with that? And I've noticed another dipstick on the passenger side directly behind the engine (not on it), I know it's not transmission fluid, but it does seem to have a strong smell and looks pretty dark, and I think I can smell it on hot days or when I'm pulling trailers. Any idea what that is?

Simply lift the front tires, fill the reservoir, start the engine, turn the steering wheel back and fourth, lock to lock until the whine stops. Top up fluid. Air bleeding complete.

MrSubaru1387, I just replaced the belts on my 99 forester L. Every time I start the car there is a squeal. I opened the hood to notice that my power-steering pump pulley is very wobbly. Do I need to replace the whole pump? (my power steering is fine, I haven't noticed any fluid leaking or loss of power steering yet) or can I replace the pulley itself?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 лет назад
I'd remove the pulley and make sure it is not bent or damaged.

+Christopher Ohara start cheap. Flush your system with fresh fluid.

my 1996 the steering is very hard but pump not whining not low on fluid either , allmost like it has are in fluid . what do you think
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 8 лет назад
+Christopher Ohara pump could be weak, could have a restriction in one of the lines, could be a bad steering rack. Hard to say.

2nd time I've tried to rebuild an Impreza pump and when I reinstall it, I have no power. There's no leak but I can't get power back. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? It's not that big a repair.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
Any noise?
@robertf4572
@robertf4572 7 лет назад
MrSubaru1387 no. No bubbles when I swing the wheel side to side. The fluid doesn't even move. Like it's not pumping. Must of messed something up when I pulled it apart. Don't know what cause it's pretty simple.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+Robert Ferraro yea, something is definitely not right. Aren't seeing any metal shavings or damage to the internals after taking it apart the second time?
@robertf4572
@robertf4572 7 лет назад
I didn't. I took it apart again this morning and noticed I didn't have the part that sits under the veins oriented properly. I had the dimples off a little bit when I fixed it at trucks perfectly inside of the palm I reinstalled it and hook it all up however I still don't have very good power steering. Again no leaks not my son is there but no power. I probably should've mentioned that I change the rack at the same time not sure that would have much to do with it as I went through the bleeding procedure a few times.I think I may just need to get a new pump
@robertf4572
@robertf4572 7 лет назад
Voice to text is horrible. Meant to say once I oriented it right it fits perfectly inside the pump.

I have a 2008 impreza wrx. I have flushed the fluid and changed the o ring on the return inlet hose. So I have no whining noises. But now it's very stiff at turns. Also engine on in neutral trying to turn the wheel lock to lock. Any suggestions?

+BAKWOODS KID did you put the correct power steering fluid in? Remember to hook the electric connector on the back of the pump up?
@jc24_zr2
@jc24_zr2 7 лет назад
MrSubaru1387 yes connector is hooked up. I used BG power steering fluid recommended by from subaru service. I thought I was supposed to use ATF.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+BAKWOODS KID yea. Should use dexron ATF for the power steering fluid..

MrSubaru1387 thanks I'll look into that. Just seems odd. It's been running for over two weeks no issues until now.

+BAKWOODS KID just checked the service manual for the 08 impreza. States Subaru ATF HP or Dex III are to be used for the power steering fluid.

Was the power steering pump rebuild required because the car was ran without power steering fluid???
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 7 лет назад
+Pauly Nguyen it was required because the pump was leaking fluid.

Thx for the vid! Do you know if they also sell the kit for 2011 legacy models, went by the Subaru dealership and I was told they don’t this kit and was only available for previous models like 08 and down. Was wonder if there was an aftermarket kit out there. Thx for the vids that have been very helpful!
