Subaru STi vs. Subaru Six Cylinder - Which Engine is Better Part 2?

In this part 2 video we tuned both the 6 Cylinder (H6 or EZ3.6R) and STi (EJ257) engines. That tuning changed our opinion entirely. We break down which engine is best based on horse power, torque, sound, emissions, and much more.
Check out part 1 with both engine being stock - • Subaru Engine Comparis...

Gotta say, the Sound factor is what makes me just want the H6 all the way, and keeping it NA with almost the same power as the STI swap would probably be a nice plus! :D

Of course, there is more to it than just raw numbers. NA reliability is heads and shoulders superior to turbo reliability. There is FAR less to go wrong, and when things do go wrong, NA engines normally survive, whereas Turbo engines often die (sometimes taking the turbo with them, or vice versa). Then there is the replacement cost. It's expensive getting the H6 into the car to start with, but if you do somehow manage to break one (less likely if it's NA) the replacement is SUPER cheap (I just bought an EZ36 for $400). On the other hand, if you eat an EJ257, you're in a new engine at least another $6k, and the odds of this happening are far higher than with an NA H6. So if you're happy with stock STi performance, and you're just looking for serious reliability, with the ability to recover at a reasonable price if something does happen, the H6 is a very attractive option.

Very cool comparo and what a massive difference in STI numbers after that tune! I have 2017 3.6R Outback, numbers for later versions of the 3.6 are higher around 256hp, 247 ft lb of torque bone stock. Love that 22B impreza with the H6. It looks wicked and sounds amazing, I would personally take it anyday over any turbo 4.

There is aftermarket for the 3.0 and the 3.6 just take a look at the Australian subarus, they don't mess around, raptor supercharger, headers, intakes, exhaust, and not to mention the handling department.

Great comparison!! Good ol sti with cobb accessport to clean up the power band but I'd still stick with the H6 swap in my opinion.If that sti cost 25k to own I'd rather use the price tag of that sti towards the 3.6 if you want 500hp+. These 6 cylinders are pretty tough when boosted. A 3.0r with a gt3582r on 93 octane has made 438whp at 16psi. The 3.6r is virtually the same just bigger displacement so imagine the possibilities. 400hp+ on the 6 cylinder turbo is by far more reliable then the 4 cylinder with 400hp+. I still love the ejs but like you mentioned when it comes down to big power and reliability go with the h6, or go with the h6 turbo if you want to show diesel trucks that you can make torque too ;). In reality it's all on preference. Just good to know people are at least acknowledging the 6 cylinders lol keep that subaru love going no matter what the swap!!
@99subigt
@99subigt 3 года назад
Or you can just add a raptor supercharger and reach 400 HP add bolt-ons and you be at 500hp and be cheaper than a custom turbo and!! You get to keep your 6cyl sound😍 oh and instant TQ and with AWD yeah boyyy!

I’n going to a wrecker today, they seem to have an ez36 that I could get for cheap. If its there, I’l take it. My little project is to use this engine in a 2008 slowbaru impreza 2.5i . Price for an sti engine in my area are about 4500usd, so a cheap 500$ ez36 make sense. I’l do everything myself including machining.

Great vid and info, I have both the GC 4cly and the H6 3.0r, I love both always have, when I rebuild the H6 I’ll either go SC or TB not sure yet, I have plenty of options here for the H6, expensive but it’s been done and available. Been enjoying your series with Bucky also, cheers. If I need wiring I know where to go fer sure 🤙

Just Subscribed. Im torn between a rebuild of my ej20 on my 02 wrx or the h6 swap. Im on the fence because im out of racing these days but still want the power when im feeling frisky. But i think the 6 cylinder would be plenty at around 250hp, just peppy to drive and handle. Great video!

After getting out of the subie game for a few years and living with a JZ I’ll definitely say the extra .5L is worth it for a daily 600whp car. Much easier to drive and much easier to make power. If I ever got back into a Subaru I’d do an ez30 turbo.

I'd like an H6 for my N/A rally car. Heat management here in Texas is a real issue so I tend to lean towards non-turbo cars for that (though I do have an STI that I rally as well). Plus that H6 sound, mmmmmm.

Maybe worth checking (if you haven’t already) what Mighty Car Mods did to the 3.6 engine, I think its running just over 400whp which they consider safe for an absolutely stock block and internals.

We decided not to turbo it since it would be too expensive and we didn't want to cut up the chassis. We've taken it out for a 19 STI and it rips! Check out Smeedia for turbo H6 content :)

Hi. You are talking about the EZ36R that still lives in a Grey area of turbo mods. Have you thought about the EZ30R? It got a lot more parts on the market to modify with turbo kit.
@iwiresubaruwiringsolutions5538
@iwiresubaruwiringsolutions5538 4 года назад
That's definitely true, but remember the cost for that engine build is quite high which mostly what we are referring too. Not to mention the turbo kit and many supporting mods are going to be all custom. If there is an off the shelf turbo kit for this car it would be news to me, but a great addition if there was.

I also got my hands on some Bilsteins struts from Racecomp, and STI sway bar bushings ect. I wish the 3.6 revved out to 8k or so . 350 hp would be nice.

@John-rw9bv

An NA H6 could not compete with a turbo'd 1cyl. The turbo is the "other" engine. You add all these cons like "you need a custom ECU and you wont pass smog" (why?) with the H6, but if you were going that far you'd add a $1000 turbo and now the STI has no chance. Depending on the actual H6 (EG/EZ)
@iwiresubaruwiringsolutions5538
If you read this article it'll explain why you can't use the stock ECU and why it won't pass smog - iwireusa.com/blogs/iwire-university/6-cylinder-subaru-swap We've had customer do all the work for the swap but keep it NA without adding a turbo.
@John-rw9bv
@John-rw9bv Год назад
@@iwiresubaruwiringsolutions5538 Oh OK i got ya, thanks for letting me know I guess it's the ECU. Since the price for ECUs has plummeted, or at least TunerStudio compatible boards are out there for under $100 with all the features, there's never really a good reason not to recommend an ECU swap, even if you're not modding the car. It's just a better ECU. Here in Germany doing that means you have to have the gas emissions re-tested, and I think it's $3000, but also true for an engine swap or a turbo-anything, so basically you got to do it for any mod at all. As such, swapping the ECU is basically free, and it's what you need to do to pass emissions. In the US swapping the ECU probably doesn't help you pass emissions, so there is no market for it...?

You’ve gotta be talking about Crank HP numbers. I would never take a stock EJ257 to 400whp expecting it to last especially without torque limiting. Anything close to 400whp and up needs at minimum pistons. While a EG33 or EZ30/36 can do on a stock motor
