Does your off-road/weekend warrior Subaru need to be a rock crawler to justify daily driving an autolocker? Let's find out.
In this video we explore what its like to daily a WRX with a TORQ locker before hitting the gravel trails for some spirited rally fun. Be sure to watch until the end for insight and tips that should be helpful if you're considering buying an autolocker for your Subaru.
Our 2011 Subari Impreza WRX 5MT hatch (aka Rex - colloquially and uncreatively) has yet to be prominently featured on this channel. For anyone that's curious, please see the mod list below:

@@powerofyourbrains Does this modification make the rear open differential make it act as a limited slip differential? Is also safe to say it’s street worthy ?

Over filling it probably wont help with lube and heat. Youll aerate your oil and throw less of it forward. Youll make it quieter but is that really worth it?

Exactly... The engineers new what they were doing when they placed the fill plug.

Hello nice videos. I have a Forester SH 2.0 2009, with high/low knob and open differential back. A torque locker or a torsen LSD, will work-function better in off road (dirt, sand, rock)(snow, mud). But pavement in highways and twist roads are the daily menu.

We typically just fill the diff bushing with window weld. Easier than full replacement. Same result. Can you review your little ceasers pizza next?

I'm not sure if I understand what it does, but here goes my golden question: does this solve the X problem when off-road? A 1st gen Outback is my precious.

I hear running the autos with the fwd fuse on a daily basis isn't good for the solenoid, but I have done so on an older 98 Impreza I had due to the transfer clutches binding and causing it to hop around corners. Thoughts?

Definitely hear a lot of tire scrubbing when you give it gas in a turn, that must eat up your tires, I was thinking about installing a locker in my daily driver but this has changed my mind.

haven’t had the problem in an X and XT forester. However if you don’t intend on doing off road things a torq locker may not be what you want

I'm kinda new to Subaru so these are Newb questions: What diameter are Subaru ring gears? Are there diff gearing options out there? Does anyone make a clutch-type LSD for Subies? Your content and style are informative and enjoyable so please keep 'em coming... and THANK YOU!
@powerofyourbrains
@powerofyourbrains 5 лет назад
No problem! Glad you enjoy them. Most common gearing in the states is 4.44>4.11>3.9>3.54something last I checked. Cusco makes clutch lsd's but I think there are other manufacturers as well. Various helical/torsen types out there too. vLSD's from older Subarus if you're not looking to spend much money. Gearing options are trickier, because you gotta change front and rear. In many cases that may be possible , but you may end up finding that it's more practical just to swap the entire drivetrain...
@FuJiNF
@FuJiNF 4 года назад
Most common ring gear diameter is 160mm. The sti models run the 180mm ring gear, bigger differential.

probably a noobie question but why would you put a rear torq locker on a car that is mainly street? I thought the torq locker was used primarily for vehicles that go offroad and get into situations where one or more of the wheels would be in the air.

So did heavier diff oil actually help with the sound? Cheers. My locker is in the post!! Can't wait.
@powerofyourbrains
@powerofyourbrains 5 лет назад
Torq master's claims it makes the clicking quieter, but we haven't really tested that. The reason we added more oil was moreso to get consistency of locker function at any given speed

Is it me or do I notice that the Subie is not as well planted and sure of itself on those twisty roads. You may have gain some crawling ability off road but you killed it's onroadability. Now put some snow on that road and you will be sliding like nobodies business.

@@powerofyourbrainsWould the torque locker reduce load on the axle or increase load? I figure when offroad with a tire slipping it would prevent the 'brake grab' and torque shock to the non-spinning wheel that subaru's AWD system does by default, thus reducing axle load overall (at least the shock of the torque on the axle). But on-road it seems it would increase axle load pretty much as long as the locker is engaged? I'm worried about increasing wear and tear on my 2023 Subaru Ascent with the locker. We mainly are on-road, but when we are offroad we are very much offroad which is several times a month. Already seeing increased tire wear from doing a lot of offroad (using A/T tires) and haven't had any issues yet without the locker. Rallitek swears by them and convinced us to install one in our Ascent due to our offroad usage. I'm still hesitant because of the on-road tire wear and other increased wear on other parts.
@jackd1582

What does it do to tire wear?
@powerofyourbrains
@powerofyourbrains 4 года назад
The only thing I can say for certain is that it won't improve it. Ultimately it's all gonna depend on your tires, driving style, and how often you rotate them
