Subaru torque convertor install

Re-installing the torque convertor on my gen 3 Outback after it jumped out while removing the engine for maintenance. Makes more sense after you see it. If the intermediate piece is still In the transmission you should be able to fish it out of there with a wire hook or a couple small screwdrivers. Never found the missing tab. Hoping it flushed out on the floor with all the fluid I lost. Garage looks like a bad episode of a hospital drama.

I have to say, the moment when the TC finally seats is probably the most satisfying thing I'll watch today!

Thank you for this video. When I pulled my 2008 Outback engine the torque converter came out with it, because I had forgotten to remove the dust shield. Not knowing about the retainer clip, I thought that I had seated it all the way back in. But, when I bolted the engine back in it wouldn't turn over. I assumed it was an issue with the TC possibly not seating all the way and binding the engine, so I went searching and found this video. As soon as I saw his, I knew what my problem was. I have a couple of notes for future viewers. The retaining clip in this video is not broken, it only has a skewed end. The "pipe" that Paul pulled out with his fingers, I had to reach in and pull out with needle nose pliers, after I first reached in and pulled out my retaining clip. Then I reformed the one end of the clip, put it onto the pipe and shoved it into the TC until it seated. The rest went pretty much just like Paul showed. Again, Thanks, Paul.

Thanks for the great video! Last week, I had the same thing happen to me when I pulled the engine out of a 'Salvage-Titled' (rear-ended) 2002 Subaru Forester. Fortunately for me, the rear shaft that fits into the torque converter hub did not separate from the converter in my case. I pulled the converter out far enough to see that the extension shaft was still secured to the torque converter hub by the snap ring, and then I wrestled & slid the converter back into place on the transmission's input shaft. That 2002 engine & transmission went into my 2001 Subaru Forester 'roller' that has a 'Clean Title'.

I would never have put that back together with that broken keeper. NO WAY! The rest was great! Thank you for the video.

Once everything is in place and assembled there is no way anything can slip out of place. So mostly the clip is an assembly aid. My bigger concern was where did the broken piece go? Did it flush in to the transmission somewhere? is it inside the torque convertor? Or did it just disappear in to the dirt? The world may never know...

Great video!!! I forced it in with the engine I didn’t know about that Inner piece then when I tried turning the engine to install the converter bolts it wouldn’t spin!! It was totally stuck so I took it back off and saw the converter out. And thanks to this video I can finally finish the car! Thank you sir

OMG...What a great video to get me out of this predicament. I did my first Suby engine removal and I knew not to let this TC come out....buuuuut...it slid out an inch or two and isn't going back in. This video is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to save the rest of us some frustration!

For anyone struggling I made two mistakes... 1.) I had the transmission too low, it still needs to be jacked up a bit so it’s well clear of the crossmember. 2.) I was holding the weight of the TC up, but i finally figured out that even though I was holding the TC straight, the last set of female splines were tilted down just a bit inside the TC. I actually pushed downwards on it a bit, let it sit on its own weight, and it finally popped in.

Just installed engine back into Subaru Tribeca after head gasket replacement. I thought I had torque converter seated after hearing the first click and drop. How I wish I knew last week what I discovered today. Engine wouldn’t turn over after bolting it to trans and installing all components. Now I have to redo all my work, pull the engine again and seat the converter properly. I am so, so mad at myself.

Thank you so much. I ran in to this very issue and fortunately you made a video covering it. I would've been stumped otherwise. I was lucky my clip wasn't broken but the input shaft came out (foot and a half shaft deep) with the converter and I guess it was all too much slop to lock in so I had to take it apart individually and then install them one by one. When the tq converter went in I hollered 😅

I just pulled my EJ25 and the torque converter came with it--even with the flex plate bolts removed. Luckily, it had only come out about 6 inches, and I pushed it back in. I just hope the weight of the torque converter, hanging out there in space, didn't wreck the lip seal.

Great video! Pulled my engine to do head gaskets in my 01 outback (ej25 sohc) and accidentally pulled my TC off about two inches. I managed to work it back on and pop into place similar to yours. I'm interested to know now if I broke that retention clip as well! I haven't buttoned up the car yet and the engine is still on the stand. Wonder if I should take it off to inspect it or just go with it? Thanks for the post. Glad to know I'm not the only one who did this too! Lol 👍

Finally found a good repair manual for the subaru transmission. The spec I was after is the distance from bell housing to face of torque converter. For the 2015 TR580 and TR690 it is .268 or 6.8mm

The circlip is $3.23 at my Subaru dealership. Mine was unrecognizable when it came out, so I had no choice. Cheap insurance either way. Paul, I'm replacing the seal as well. Should I try fishing the shaft out first? Thanks for the video. BTW mine is a 94 Legacy.

Just wondering why your pulling the engine to replace the timing belt. And next time your TC comes out just lift and spin back and fourth it will eventually pop in.

Because I was doing the valves too. I tried all sorts of lifting and spinning to reset the TC. Wasn't happening. Now I know what and why, and hopefully won't need to go there again for a while.

this is an older video by now but did that shift fine when it was back running, only wandering cause I heard there is a seal in there that you can damage? asking cause of being in the exact situation as you are/were.. thanks

Hey Josh, I'm replacing my 03 outback transmission because a bad axle shattered my front diff 🤦‍♂️ if you break the seal you will hear a very loud and violent pop as you slam the shaft through the oil pump. If you try to drive it, it may shift for a few seconds but it won't have pressure to the gears so it simply won't drive. If you don't hear a deafening snap when it goes in all the way then you're golden

@pmatulew1
@pmatulew1 7 лет назад
Thankfully no additional issues to report. Never did find the missing tab. Hopefully it has fallen in to the pan or gotten trapped in the filter. Once the unit is assembled the clip really doesn't do anything. I believe it's just an assembly aid.

@kevingallineauii9353
@kevingallineauii9353 5 лет назад
Honestly though. If you have an engine lift these engines are super easy to pull. I did a head gasket job on one with the engine (short block) left in the car. After seeing how easy it is to remove the engine I would rather do that than pull the transmission, unless the transmission was the problem.

Is putting that little clamp around it necessary, because i pulled it out but I can't get the sleeve that he pulled out at 1:40 . If it is necessary are there any ideas on how to get the sleeve out.
@pmatulew1
@pmatulew1 5 лет назад
You have to snap it together first, because you'll never get it lined up otherwise. If you can't reach the intermediate shaft with your fingers, just make a little hook out of a piece of wire or something. Should pull right out.
@Wolfox360

Sorry, But if you brake a piece, Good idea replace with a new one, why did you put back that broken piece again? And that looks like the front of a forester, Thought they had all chains by now. Hope you changed the CVT fluid
@pmatulew1
@pmatulew1 7 лет назад
You are correct. Best practice would have been to replace the broken clip. In this case I determined that the broken clip was more of an assembly aid and doesn't perform any critical function once everything is together. I was more concerned about where the broken tab had wandered off to. Not a good thing to have floating around in your transmission. Never did find it though. All the fluids and filters were changed at the 100K service interval which conveniently arrived shortly after I purchased the vehicle.

@tobidavis1651

Worst case scenario, you shove it in without rotating it and you slam the shaft into the oil pump, thus ruining the pressure for it to shift and needing a new pump🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I'm glad that didn't happen to you!

@pmatulew1
@pmatulew1 7 лет назад
My apologies for the late reply. I made several attempts to translate your comment. "Hello i do not speak english but i would like to make a query, I own a car 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback and shot all the oil through the seal that goes there in the transmission, i want to know where to throw the oil seal or some other side, this afternoon, remove the transmission and is very similar to the video that your samples". My best guest at your question is that your transmission front seal is bad and you are losing transmission fluid. Replacing the front seal is a simple task once you have the torque convertor out. For replacing the lost fluid, the transmission fill is on the left side. The front differential fill is on the right side.
