Subaru returns to the world's most formidable racetrack, the Isle of Man TT Course, with the all-new 2015 Subaru WRX STI to set a new lap record. Follow the team online: www.subaru.com...
this is why i love subaru. Not only do they make affordable cars for every type of person, but they still keep on making and improving their performance flagship WRX and STI models.
The modifications that where made where either required or where allowed by the race standards (which ANY car racing the TT could make) and still be considered a "production vehicle" - this is the new production vehicle record whether you believe it or not. Awesome driving a Awesome Car! When the FA turbo hatchback comes out (fingers crossed) I might need to upgrade my collection.
I agree! I like the style of any pre 07 impreza more so than I do the later years. Not hating on the newer models in any way, they all drive incredibly well.
Yeah my dad had an ‘05 when I was growing up, and it was great fun stock, but he made it into a beast. Great memories with that car. He got a fully built bottom end, and then did the top himself. I don’t remember what turbo he ran, but it was huge. I think right towards the end before he sold it, it was putting 750 to the wheels. The most amazing thing was that he hardly touched the suspension, because they handle so well from the factory
Why does virtually every external shot cut away before the car goes past? So frustrating that you don't get to see the car actually through the whole corner.
If they make a hatch with the 2L turbo and a decent fuel economy close to my BRZ, I'll be very tempted to upgrade. It'd make a good excuse to trade in my wife's Prius. Owning an 05 STI, I don't think I could own another sedan. Hatchbacks are so much more convenient for dogs and I really don't want to have to upgrade to a Forester. Too bad the past hatch looked like a Corolla and lacked all of the hard-edged driving character of the 05. I would have traded up in 08.
They changed the springs and dampers to be able to handle the courses famous bumps at such high speeds. No word on the exhaust though. Sauce: www.autoblog.com/2014/06/04/subaru-wrx-sti-isle-of-man-lap-record/
I have never owned a Subaru to date but I have been doing lots of reading on the forester and I'm thinking it may be my next car. Because of this I was wondering if there are any owners of a 2014 or 2015 Forester in this group. Here in Canada they are claiming to get 33 mpg city and 45 mpg highway with the 2.5 and a cvt. If anyone in the group owns one please give me some over all feed back on the car. If I am to spend that much for a car I would like to think I am getting one that is good. I now drive a Toyota Matrix awd and very much like the car but all my research on the Forester is making me think real hard about switching to the Subaru. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated either here or inbox my facebook profile. Thanks in advance.
droceretik The California plates would lead me to believe that it _would_ be LHD but I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. It's kind of cool to see a car competing on the Isle of Man with license plates from my home state.
Its not road legal so not technically a production car and to loud to be used in a public place. yes the course is shut down for the tt but there are people who live off the course. that thing can be heard from miles away at full throttle.
so my question is what cars have they actually taken around this course? the subaru is fast for a sedan, but "production car lap record" ? have they ever ran a gtr around this lol?
+heartkiller93 You did see how narrow many sections of the course are, right? The STI is 70.7 inches wide. The GT-R is 74.6 inches wide. That's nearly 4 inches wider. That may not sound like a lot, but I guarantee you that at those speeds on a track that narrow, the driver is going to notice the difference. It's also probably going to mean slower corners, because the driver's going to have four less inches to work with on the exits. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see someone try, but there are probably reasons they haven't taken wide supercars to the Isle of Man.
What a waste of petrol ,I have walked the tt course with a average speed of 3 miles per hour and a top speed on the straight of 5 mph ,slowing down to around 2 miles around bends all that on a pint of semi skimmed milk and 2 mars bars might I add !!
I didn't I was thinking if I carried a watch and calendar it could of slowed me down with the extra weight /wind resistance, my calendar is quite big around 2 foot, makes a flappy noise in the wind ,thanks for asking Jammy
***** Yeah I know how he saved it, its called counter-steering. This guy probably could've saved it in fwd because a lot of that was skill, but at that speed the AWD helped, in FWD it likely would've oversteered after the first counter at that speed.
+Xanore Gaming Mine too bro, since 12 years old. That was in '96.... Now I drive an Obsidian Black (('06)) STI. Did a pro tune in '08, without any mods (I found out the factory tune was shit). Still unmodified, still the love of my life...my wife understands. After 10 corner shredding years with this car, I wouldn't change a damn thing. Should also say, it hasn't left me stranded, not one single time. WOT!!!
+freeyourmind Was thinking the same thing. I've lapped Nürburgring enough times that I feel like I can do it blind folded lol. I need a challenge like this!
That was AWESOME!!!!!! Great vid, great driving, and great car! At first I was not overly impressed with the looks of the car (I wanted a hatch) but with every video I watch I am really seeing this car become a fav. Good job Subaru! As always, I shall never doubt thee again.
He had more experience from last year which helped him shaved significant time. If you watched his 14' run, he nearly crashed when the car nearly lost control for a bit. This run he looked a lot more confident and used the brakes less than last year. When you drive more confidently you will shave a lot of time.
This is stupid. Why don't they do it with a stock car. Its clear that this car is modified to some extent. If not heavily modified. I bet the suspension is modified that's for sure. We want see what the stock production car does, not a race car. LAME and not impressed.
The stock car components will not stand to the sustained abuse, over a long period of time, such as this TT challenge. You obviously do not have the aptitude to understand any of that fact and the motor sport event you just watched. Go back to your video games. Here, have a read to know what's done to the car (test of reading comprehension): www.autoblog.com/2014/06/04/subaru-wrx-sti-isle-of-man-lap-record/
RdGr12 Well, in the original poster's defense, that's kind of the point, isn't it? To have a stock car be able to run the course. I can understand the safety stuff and tires, but they modified suspension and brake pads too (allegedly for "safety" reasons but I'm a little skeptical). In my eyes, that kind of defeats the purpose. Not that I think this is lame, but I don't think it adheres 100% to the definition of a stock car.
@ 3:37, the right front tire actually lifted off the ground at those speeds. Pretty amazing to watch. Former Subie owner..may one day step back into an STI.. They need to make bigger changes for me to come back though.
I love this car but I can't understand how you can call it stock. Apart from safety additions like roll cage, fire supression and racing seats/harness, this car has: Upgraded springs and shocks, Racing brake pads, ECU modifications (speed limiter removed and probably tuned) Straight through exhaust Higher spec Dunlop Direzza tyres Well done to Mark and his team. Great drive
Because even with all those upgrades, it is still under $50k car and within reach of most average consumers. The one they used this year is a $500k car and as such can only be afforded by the elite.
The racing seats were put in to offset the weight gain from the roll cage. The rest of the car, with the higher spec tires are upgrade options. The speed limiter is still there. The car they are using is a JDM spec STi. The parts on the car are all from factory optional upgrade which we don't get in the States. Where did you get your source that the ECU was modded? You think the company is stupid enough to cheat in the TT and breaking rules just to call themselves production #1 in front of the world?
I love American muscle cars..I drive a 2004 mustang GT 4.9 liter..can't stand foreign cars but I have driven a 92 Subaru during winter in Montana and it did great..Bout as good as most four wheel drive truck.traction was awsome and braking on the snow and ice was really good..the Subaru is the only foreign vehicle I would own after a Ferrari.
I don't understand how Subaru of U.K got rid of the STI due to lack of sales, when most WRC rally drivers are from the U.K!! Makes no sense to me, but that's none of my business.
F1 cars have so much down force from the rear wing that they could theoretically drive on a ceiling at a high enough speed. That said, they would stay grounded the entire time over a hill, enabling them to have an even bigger advantage on this course compared to a suped up rally car.
To all you dummies crying foul because of the race tires and whatnot... You guys notice the thousands of spectators standing feet away from the track? The car is as stock as safety would allow to go flat out on the most demanding "track" in the world.
You get different trim packages and performances packages in different countries. That could be a bone stock "launch" but "uk" version or what ever. You get what km saying.
+vidurc There are a lot of S-bends that the bikes just don't have to treat as a series of turns. They're narrow enough to go straight through, no turning and no leaning necessary. The car's too wide to take those same S bends straight, so it actually has to slow enough to make the quick left right left, or right left right. There are also a lot of very shallow angle corners that the bikes can apex by just going straight. When the car goes into one of those, the driver has to apex with the inside wheels, and then worry about not going to wide with the outside wheels. That's not a problem for the bikes with their inline pair of wheels. And that's before we even get started on the advantages of being able to see exactly where the apex is in relation to your wheels.
Saludos equipo #Subaru. Atte: Irvin Valdes
Everyone knows the corners are where it matters and the Director disappoints giving us in-car footage pretty much on the straights only. Could have been so much better!
Was that from a standing start, like the bikes have to do. I doubt it, otherwise it would have featured in the vid, if the bikes could pass the start / finish at full throttle I guess they could knock 3 to 4 seconds off the current lap time too
Obviously subaru has focused on the cars stability of it cornering without loss of speed and confortable drive by reducing the g force put against the drive making the drive less edgy and more enjoyable on the corners and at high speeds i wish i had one right now.
I don't get why other production cars don't try to beat the subie's record, cause a lot of them could probably surpass the subaru's by quite a bit....or maybe they just don't care and are only worried about the nurburgring
It takes a specific type of car to to this, the one that can endure jumps, bumps and compressions of this track, a car that was developed as a rally race car. The only worthy opponent imo is Evo, but Mitsubishi is not interested in that and that's a shame
