Lyrics:
Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In-between the bright lights
And the far, unlit unknown
Growing up, it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass-production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
Subdivisions
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths, we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights
Subdivisions
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

There actually is a video of Neil Peart playing this song just by himself. It was recorded for a drummers master class series that was sponsored by The Drum Channel. You should check it out. A great to see him play this song.

I'm 57 years old from Memphis, Tennessee. I graduated HS in 1984, but started that public school in the 11th grade (in 1982, (which is the year Signals came out) after attending a small "church school" from the 1st through the 10th grade. I knew no one at that HS and immediately identified with "Subdivisions". I started listening to Rush in ~1978 at age 12. Neil Peart's drumming is what attracted me. I played the piano & guitar, never the drums. I hadn't heard anything like Neil Peart in LED Zeppelin, Van Halen, anything. When I discovered he wrote the Lyrics, and they were intelligent I was hooked on Rush. Neil first, then Geddy, and later fully appreciated Alex Lifeson. Their music and lyrics marked points in my life as I always empathized with them. I never met Neil or talked to him, etc. BUT, I felt like I knew him through the music & lyrics. When the news of his death was released I was shocked, and then cried for a man I never really knew. Neil Peart is the only person that was not a relative or close friend that I had to grieve their death It took several months. I don't know why I'm telling you this except you're a Canadian drummer, and seem like a nice person. I've also listened to Rush for the past 2 hours today and was feeling sad again about his tragic death. I promise I'm not a psychiatric patient! I'm actually an orthopedic surgeon - not that I couldn't also be "crazy". Thanks for listening to me😂I hope you post yourself playing Subdivisions. Loren

Great reaction Larry!! Fellow Canadian here, just an hour outside of Toronto. You're indeed correct - there isn't enough superlatives that can be heaped upon our Holy Trinity from Toronto! Musicianship, sound, lyrical content & meaning...it's all there! You've just reacted to my #1 Rush song - this track has been near and dear to me for nearly 35 years now. As a self-professed 'nerd', I was never part of the 'in' crowd through high school. The alienation was real. The societal pressures to fit-in, to succeed in the rat-race, become part of the status quo are ever-present. It's hard for an individual, free-thinker to maintain that integrity and not cave to those pressures. Besides the message resonating, I still get a chill every time I hear the opening synth drone, then Neil's expert percussive attack, Geddy's flowing and intricate basslines & of course Alex's perfectly atmospheric guitar - always in service to the song - rhythm where it needs to be, shredding likewise! I look forward to hearing more reactions from Rush!! I think La Villa Strangiato is due (their official video is a live performance, and it's magnificent!!) Cheers!

Hey there, fellow Canadian! Thanks a ton for sharing your thoughts. It's awesome to connect with a Rush enthusiast who understands the depth and brilliance of their music. "Subdivisions" is truly a masterpiece that resonates on so many levels. I can totally relate to the message of individuality and staying true to oneself in the face of societal pressures. The way each band member contributes their unique talents to create that unmistakable Rush sound is pure magic. And I'm excited to dive into more of their catalog. "La Villa Strangiato" sounds like an incredible journey, and I can't wait to experience it. Stay tuned for more reactions, and let's keep celebrating the genius that is Rush! Cheers!

It’s two surface riding between the hi hat and ride cymbal. Right hand plays the ands on the ride cymbal and also the snare beats while the lefts plays all the off beat 16th notes on the high hat. I use it all the time in my playing and I totally got that from Neil.

I’ve never held a drumstick in my hands in my life. I’ve heard and loved this song for decades - I listen to it over and over again for a couple of weeks a year I think (I tend to do that with music I love). The thing is…nowadays when I listen to this - fantastic! - song, I listen to hear the drums. Which is quite interesting; why do I do that, when that's not what i solely focus on in ANY other song, and when I don't know the first thing about drumming? Hearing a drummer react and reading the comments I think I'm beginning to understand why. Truly masterful drumming by Neil. I've seen so many reactions to this song, I can't believe I haven't come across your channel until now. It was really nice to watch! Cheers from Sweden /Christina

I was a rock snob just like everyone else back then. Keyboards? After Moving Pictures? What kind of wusses are they? But this song is genius in about 12 different ways. And now that I'm older with less judgmental attitudes about music, there is no bad era of Rush. I even love Hold Your Fire. That interlude in The Mission is amazing, for example.

“I even love Hold Your Fire” Hold Your Fire represents the absolute pinnacle of Rush’s work; it’s probably their best album. I felt this way from the second I dropped the needle on this album, and Geddy himself said the same thing, that it was their finest album

This was the last album Rush did with famed producer, Terry Brown. It really marked the band’s move into using heavy synths right smack dab in the middle of the sound spectrum. I was 14 when this song came out, growing up in Kitchener. They picked up a tonne of us geeks, stoners, and misfits as the band’s second generation of lifelong fans with this song. PS - Just a little bit of Canadian history for you: Toronto in the early 80’s was only just becoming the most important commercial centre in Canada. Up until that point, Montreal was the commercial capital of our home and native land. It took the election of a separatist government in Quebec to start the exodus of head offices to Toronto in 1976, subsequently turbocharged by the provincial government’s holding of a “referendum” on succession in 1980 (technically, it could only have been a plebiscite, though). This fact doesn’t take away from your analysis of the lyrics, but it’s just cool to contemplate how there was a time, not that long ago, when all business eyes focused on Montreal (then controlled largely by Anglophones), not Toronto (where most of those Anglos would have moved in the six years prior to this song’s release). PPS - Alex was born in Fernie, BC but moved to [what was then the Borough of] North York, now just part of Toronto, when still a kid in primary school. He met Geddy in Middle School. Rush’s original drummer, John Rutsey, was from the neighbourhood too. Neil Peart grew up in the small town of Port Dalhousie (now part of St. Catherine’s). His experience was sub-rural rather than sub-urban (e.g. his dad owned a farm machinery dealership). In terms of suggestions, you should listen to Digital Man, which is also on 1982’s Signals. I’d also want to bring you back to 1979’s Natural Science. I’d also strongly suggest you listen to YYZ performed live from the album, Exit Stage Left, which included a drum solo in the middle of the song.

@llarose 10 месяцев назад
Thank you for sharing your insights and a piece of Canadian history! I was there and remember the referendum and a time when Montreal was bigger than TO. It's fascinating to think about the shift in commercial centers from Montreal to Toronto during that era and how Rush's music captured the hearts of a diverse fan base. Rush's music transcends generations and resonates with geeks, stoners, and misfits alike. The band's ability to evolve their sound while maintaining their unique identity is truly commendable. I appreciate your song recommendations, and I'll definitely give "Digital Man," "Natural Science," and the live version of "YYZ" a listen. I'm going to try and cover most on Exit Stage Left this year. Rush's musical prowess, especially Neil Peart's drumming, never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for being a part of this musical journey, and I hope you continue to enjoy the content on the channel!

I just love Neil’s compositional prowess. His parts just match the song so well and it seems like he accents certain syllable and key words of his lyrics sung by Geddy that just make the singing pop. Parts in 7 and also 6/4. If you play totally by ear you might not know, but you have to count with these changing meters at some point don’t you?
@llarose
@llarose 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely, Neil Peart's ability to intricately weave his drumming patterns with the music is truly remarkable. His attention to detail adds a unique layer of depth to the overall sound. The changing meters, like the shifts between 7 and 6/4, require both precision and a keen sense of timing. While playing by ear is a great skill, counting and understanding these meter changes is like a musical puzzle. Back in the early 90's I bought Neil's instructional DVD set. It helped a lot. In the end, Rush's mastery is evident in how seamlessly they navigate through these musical landscapes.

@@llarose If you listen to enough Rush, the proggy changes in time signatures is what they are renowned for, especially their use of 5/4 and 7/4. But what is truly magnificent is their smooth transitions between the time changes. Neil does not get enough credit for leading that effort.

Whenever my role as a drummer comes up in conversation, or when music students catch a glimpse of me performing in our intimate music studio during our Friday night gatherings in Rio, the RUSH DVD set swiftly becomes their companion the next week. I've had the pleasure of immersing myself in the performance countless times. An interesting tidbit about their tour through Brazil: they started off in Sao Paulo, the larger city, the previous night before concluding their tour in Rio. The audience in Sao Paulo was notably more sizable and energetic, not to undermine the incredible energy of Rio's audience. n21 years ago. Hard to believe.

Neil wrote the lyrics , As Taylor Hawkins said when they indicated Rush into the whole of fame who the fuck let’s the Drummer write the lyrics , This song was also about not fitting in with the click being outcast nerds , Neil did not feel like he fit in being a book worm and more into the music , Also Geddy and Alex felt they did not fit in with the main stream kids in school ,
