This is one of those sublime songs that perfectly demonstrates how brilliant Bradley was as a singer and a lyricist.’this really is one of the most perfect marriages between music and lyrics.
This song did a really great Public Service Announcement on not being a piece of shit. I hope the kids and teenager who heard this song took this message to heart.
Nothing will sound like Sublime again... I've been looking for any band to fill the gap they left for years and it's impossible. Bradley's mind was unique.
I remember playing this song for my dad when I was young. The music grabbed his attention even though he didn't listen to this kinda rock. Then the lyrics got his attention even more. When it ended, he said he really liked it. My dad ended up borrowing the cd from me to listen to at work. He loved Sublime's music. He passes away 12 years ago at 54 years old. I miss him and listening to good music with em.
I used to 'force' my mum to listen to my music in the car. She really liked Sublime but the Dead Kennedys, Pennywise etc a bit less so. She'd often give me a lift to the beach and I'd surf all day and she'd wait... Lost her 7 years ago, she was also 54. I'll raise a glass for them
My mother passed away in 2000 at 37,when I got all of her things she had a 40oz to freedom cassette tape, I listened to it and fell in love, listened to nothing but sublime for probably 2yrs,sublime has a special place in my heart❤
"The judge knew he was full of sh*t, and he gave him 25 years" How I wish the justice system worked like that in real life. Edit: It says the judge *knew* , not "the judge had a hunch", people...
Mia you raped me, You denyed it but the judge knew you were full of shit so now you have to spend 25 years in jail. The fact that there is no real evidence is irrelevant.
Why do people not understand that they are advocating AGAINST it. To this day I have friends thinking it’s promoting it and I’m like, can you LISTEN to the LYRICS please
when i first saw this title, i was skeptical and super concerned since i actually really like this band but it's nice for artists like this to address serious issues like rape. i appreciate it
@@davemorrison312 dude the guitar is minimalistic and basic but calling it trash is actually stupid... did u want a shredding solo to complement the tragic story being told???? you have no taste at all u goober, ur the type the song is singing against
My brother worshiped brad an sublime. He passed 3 years ago at 30 years old. This an badfish bring back memories of him just forgetting his troubles to sublime tracks. Rip brad an Robby
Wow dude I feel bad seeing im the only one that replied but your brother was very loved I'm sure and it's cause of bands like sublime that you have memories with him may he and Bradley rest in peace 🕊️
When it comes to music, I don’t really care about lyrics, but the story telling in this one takes it from from an amazing song to absolute perfection. Ending is Poetic justice at its finest
I heard this on the radio today. They bleeped out 'shit', but left in 'butt raped'. I thought that was humorous. Edit: Appears this video does the same thing. lol
I remember when this video came out..only aired on mtv after midnight. Introduced me to Sublime. Was fifteen and found out they were playing a show at L'Amour in Brooklyn the following week. Snuck out with my friend to go see them. Was my first concert ever. They killed it live. So sad what happened. A true talent gone way too soon.
I went on a date with a girl with a sublime shirt, and I thought she knew them, so I blurted out, "my favorite sublime song is date rape". That didn't end well haha 👏
Crazy thing is I'm seeing all these posts by people complaining about how much feminists are ripping on this song... yet I don't see any posts from the supposed feminists accused of clogging up the comments.
My Mom and Dad used to play Sublime when I was very young. We just unexpectedly lost my mom at age 53. She was a beautiful soul Michelle Renee Stamper OCT 12 1969 -OCT 15 2022
@@dimthecat9418 it helps me cope because the end lyrics where they say what happens to the guy. What I wished happened to my abusers. Someone could see it as joking, but as someone who as been S/A’d multiple times, I find it captures a lot of emotions that I feel somehow. It’s really hard to explain but the highlight of it all is what ends up happening to the guy.
@@dimthecat9418 most of the song is making fun of the abuser rather than the victim. Like the lyric “if it wasn’t for date r#pe I’d never get laid”. Then in the end he gets sent to prison and gets assaulted there and the guards do nothing about it.
This was one of my favorite songs before I truly remembered what had happened to me. It made me feel empowered and seen, it was nice to know it wasn't a joke and it wasn't ok, and it was so nice to hear a man say it
I can remember running around long beach orange county and Venice in the late 80s early 90s going to a few gigs and hitting the pink scene. They don't make them like they used too. Brad is missed. Nothing but mad love and respect!! Thanks for experience.
people are scared talk about rape, when they do, they do it subtly and people don't understand, when they do it in a bold way like this song or nivana's rape me people assume it's a song about rape and not an anti-rape song
1:23 I’m pretty sure the breakdown here is supposed to be long enough to explain to your friend “hold on! It’s not what you think, hold up keep listening”
Sublime was ahead of their time. First band I knew I genuinely liked. No one I knew listened to them but I Loved 😍 their music from age 14 to 20. The best 🎵🎶
I think it further justifies the fact that clothes don't equal consent, in the same way that flirting isn't consent. This is actually a really great song. Polygraph eyes by Yungblud has a similar message as well.
Robert Moya you cannot give consent if you are intoxicated that is non consensual intercourse, I hope you realize you are justifying people taking advantage of intoxicated people. Do a simple google search hun re-educate yourself.
I told my 18 yr old son that in the 90's, artists wouldn't sugarcoat things and we loved it. Whether was Sublime's "Date Rape", Nirvana's "Rape Me", The Cranberries "Zombie", No Doubt's "I'm Just a Girl", pretty much anything by Rage Against the Machine, or countless other songs, tv shows, and movies... people in the 90's didn't hold back. There was a blunt acknowledgement of drug use, aids, sexual assault, abuse, racism, sexism, political & corporate greed/power, LGBT issues, violence & war, etc during that time.
What I’ve loved about Sublime from the get-go…always keeping it real whilst remaining authentic. Brings back happy/sad, mostly carefree memories of such a cool era in my life. 🙏🏽❤️🔥
