For a Switch-only owner this channel is a godsend. Most other reviewers pay next to no attention to these nitty gritty details that we need to know about before making a purchase. Thanks a whole bunch guys.
Hey guys - let me know if you enjoyed this one and check out Subnautica 1 which also releases on 14th - here’s our review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YJkN1q5aGtI.html - hit all the positive buttons bellow if you enjoyed and leave me a comment to reply to! Side note initial loads times are pretty hefty and then when in game there aren’t any! Mark
Wow 20/20 audio! Excellent. Btw Unity loads tons of unused tools that slow down EVERY game that is made in Unity. I wish there was a way to make it run in light mode if you aren't using those parts of the engine.
Thank you so much for the review! I can also confirm that there'll be a day one patch for Switch :) (I should probably add that I'm the community manager for Unknown Worlds lol)
Honestly for their first ports to switch Unknownworlds Entertainment have done a very good job, I hope they continue to support these games with performance patches and not leave it in the dust like some other studios (looking at you Kalypso, please give us a Tropico 6 patch to help with the performance XD)
This is a great series that I am looking forward to having on the Switch. I know there will always be some performance drops to consider but I didn't buy a Switch thinking it would be a handheld PC. I'm ready to dive deep and explore this underwater mystery. Wish me luck...
Performance is find, according to Digital Foundry. You just lose everything that makes the game look good. It has terrible graphics on Switch. I strongly advise PS5 or PC.
@@LianCasablacks Well that and the overall texture resolution is significantly worse compared to it's PC and Console counterparts which is to be expected but it still doesn't look good.
@@SwitchUpYt below zero is still suffering from the same problems on ps4, memory leak crash and falling through the ground in the ice worm area, they will never be fixed
Thanks for the review! Held back from getting it when i found out both of these are getting a physical release on the switch! can't wait to start my playthrough :D
Green Hell is an amazing game, even on the switch… yes it needs work but once it gets updated it will be even better. They also make it customizable; I for example play with tribes off, so it’s just me vs nature. The Long Dark also runs well on switch and is worth the $
I'm so HYPED for this one!! I'm hoping to play both this and the first game. Haven't played them before but I've watched a few ppl play it and it looks SO amazing. I'm so happy its finally on the switch! Hoping to get this one when I can!
In regards to the bulkhead door on your pod, when you get the blueprint to craft it, the description reads something about it preventing water from getting inside the structure while also increasing structural integrity. So the game at least explained why it works.
I played Subnautica on PC but my computer just barely ran it on the lowest settings. I just put in my Switch pre-order of Below Zero last night. Can't wait to see all the new biomes, base building options and answer more of the questions left over from the first game. Two more days, I can't wait!
I was expecting to like this more than the first, and I do...but equally I'm terrified of the deep dark water 🤣 I'll see how I feel after a patch and on sale one day! Thanks for another great review Mark, you're the best 😊
Have they done any performance patches? It would be good to see this game covered in one of your videos where you talk about game patches and see how much the games have improved!
This is my favourite switch channel. Even if you are terrible influences on me and are adding steadily to my ever growing switch backlog! I’m really keen to get subnautica and this game.
"You may never swim again" Haha! You guys basically gave them a left-handed compliment, by putting that as a minus. Also, this and the original are definitely on my wish list. Thanks for the review.
As someone who plays in handheld almost exclusively I'm glad to hear that version is better. For the bugs you might be in the same version as the current "live" early access one as I have had the same issues you've described on PC. Also if anyone here didn't like the first one because it was too scary I found this one (at least what's on steam at the time of typing this) to be less scary as the lignting is much more bright even during the night. Sure creatures like the Shadow Leviathan and those fucking trap plants scare the crap out of me. But I found this to be more wonderious than it was scary. There are some AMAZING biomes here with my favorite being the Tree Spires and the zone below the lillypad area. Definitely getting both for the switch now.
You need to check out halo CE on the topic of music then, it’s the same sound design philosophy and the best implementation of this restraint I’ve ever seen, which is also why the soundtrack is so iconic.
Thank you so much for the back to back reviews! These are definitely games that tickled my fancy. Sure, performance and visuals are not that great at the present build, but I'm remaining hopeful. I really hope the devs will release (and keep releasing updates). These are such good games. GOOD GAMES I TELLS YA! Cheers!
In the original and Below Zero the base hatches have the same problem, it’s annoying but never bothered me too much, I just assumed they had very powerful draining systems that sucked up the water that flowed in with you and got rid of it XD
You were not kidding in the first game when you said this review would be up soon. Visually I think this game looks better than the first, but that is based you watching your reviews. It seems brighter and more vibrant under the water than before.
Getting stuck underwater and running out of breath is scary at first! When i was 5 or 6 I tried to do what my older cousins were doing in the pool earlier In the day. Except my numb A$$ decided to sneak to the pool while everyone was eating. So I climb in quietly, swimming around and decide, I'm gunna do that too! Well, I tried to swim behind the ladder and my shorts got caught on the ladder and I was having trouble fitting because I wasn't strong enough to move the ladder either. While I was struggling, I remember thinking, oh man its going to a huge blowout if I die and they find me later, or if I get out and get caught I'm in huge trouble. This is why I wasn't supposed to go near the pool!!! But I managed to wiggle free after what seemed like so long I figured everyone was standing around the pool all ready to scream at me. But I got free and got right out. Never said a word to anyone for years. Didn't need to. I learned my lesson.
I didn't know there was a second game. I thought I was hallucinating when I got the notification for this video like two hours after watching the first one.
Im really hopping to play this, since i discover subnautica i want to play it, a different experience living the two faces of the sea, the beauty and the hollowness.
Performance being better in handheld mode makes perfect sense when you think about the resolution dropping to 720p. Performance should always be better in handheld mode. It makes zero sense when people expect games to perform better in the dock. Like I get that the gpu usually clocks lower in handheld mode, but gpu clocks aren’t the end all be all for performance. Especially in a game with a lot of things going on that need to be maintained by a cpu not a gpu.
I have both subnautica and below zero on PC and a high performance gaming PC, so these games look and run wayyyy better on that than on switch, but I gotta thank you for clarifying the performance on switch because nothing short of a real review would tell anyone how well the game runs on switch.
Excellent observation regarding the how on earth its possible to enter a side door deep underwater. It makes one wonder how much effort went into understanding the laws of physics underwater.
Man i love these games, put in over 100 hours on the first one on ps4. Mainly been using my switch lately so picked this up. Graphics usually dont bother me but after seeing some of the textures like the sea floor and base doors on the switch version it just made me want to get it on ps4 instead. I know its stupid but it just messes with me for some reason. Gonna try it out again but man there are some muddy textures.
Give me a game with a decent story anytime! I was always drawn to Sub Zero first for some reason, so I'm keen to pick this one up. The questions is whether to wait for a patch or wait for the two to sell together .... maybe on a sale. If ... i can wait that long. But you've hooked me on the story this time, so I'm vexed !!! Curse you !!
Just got the game today played the original on Xbox one. And so far the game runs and looks great on switch no muddy textures and the game runs smooth for the most part. I highly recommend to anyone who wants to play subnautica handheld
Hey man, liked both the reviews, will be competing for the free game next month. If you'd never played either, were extremely interested in both would you recommend the original over the Below Zero? Keeping in mind I'd be likely to play the other if I enjoyed the first one I play. Also, longevity wise I've heard the first one has a fair bit more depth on reddit. Is that fair?
Sounds like performance is a bit worse with void falling but the music goes hard to carry it above the OG in its review. Still happy neither crapped their beds and sounds like some patchwork is all compared to major overhauls!
😄 Base under water 😄 I enjoyed that, enjoy the reviews. I appreciate that you review games in hand held (and the other 😒(Switch for other than hand held, I know that the point but my ps3 look & runs better.) )Sorry I enjoyed the reviews and I always come to Switch Up before buying a game. Hope to see what you think of Maneater (because I don't want to take up space on the other consoles.)
I'm hoping this and the original Subnautica will be a bit like The Witcher 3... initially it was impossible now to notice how the performance suffered, but then you just go so pulled into it that you stopped noticing.
this one's on sale right now, 67% in the US. I'm super tempted bc i played the first on PS4 and loved it, but i'm wondering how it's doing now 2 years later.
@Alex Sonne no, you have to buy them separately. They're just releasing on the same day. But they are 2 games, 2 applications on your system, 2 purchases. I think it has a physical collection release a bit later. But I didn't see the price for that.
@@odys3803 I can't speak for the UK, but I'm receiving the physical copy of both games in the same box (can't say for certain if it's one or two carts) on Friday from Best Buy, it came out to $59.99.
@@MrsBabygirl4595 well 59.99 it's price of both games. For me it has to be one application and I want some discount that's why I said 40-50. And I'm all digital with Switch anyway.
Great review like always! Thank you! Have you heard any word regarding a patch or if they will continue to work on this after it’s released? Thanks again!
Theres no way it can run worse than the original did on my base ps5, it was literally unplayable at the end. Countless crashes, and the framerate and texture load in made it so i could swim entire meters into solid rock. This sounds like a much better experience
I would suggest the original one first but to be honest it’s probably cause I played it since very early into early access so I have a very soft spot for it. Sub zero has more content but there’s something so special about crash landing onto an alien planet and being completely alone that only comes from the original
Thanks for the review! I always wait for your videos before choosing my games. This channel reviews are always so consistent and fun to watch. Keep the great work!
To this day, I still can't play Subnautica below zero on my switch. It crashes constantly. And it seems there is almost a timer to when it crashes. I have to save every 8-10 minutes and I can only play around 20-30 minutes max and then it crashes, sometimes mid save. I have had the games since they released, but I have yet to be able to play below zero cause it is absolute hell constantly loosing progress and spending that much ting reeboting the game again and again, and it's not a quick thing to do either.
@@Tellephone26 when did those come out? I did play a bit a couple of weeks ago and it actually seemed to work, but I kinda just forget I have it, cause it has been such a pain to play for so long.
@@andytheguitarist472 patch notes came out towards the end of march I think. I havent played the game on switch in months due to the crashing, was just wondering if it was actually fixed
These little issues are so minor. I've been playing the first n second on PS4 for a long while but just a bit ago learned it's available on Switch. This will be so awesome! I travel a lot and think it's gonna be a lot more enjoyable when I feel I don't wanna read my books. Gonna be doin some Green Hell as well!
Honestly, I`ll be happy if the performance of this version is no worse than subnautica on xbox, all while still looking pretty decent... I don`t plan to play this in docked mode since i preordered the game on xbox as well, bu it`s good to know that performance in handheld seems to be decent(ish), and with some luck, patched will smooth things out further.
