BlueCrest CEO Richie Hession joins Mark Bonanni, Regional VP of Business Development at BlueCrest, and John Kakowski, a former licensed pharmacist and sober living advocate, to discuss the role of medication-assisted treatment in addiction recovery. While many programs rely on drugs like Suboxone as the "gold standard" for opiate recovery, Richie, Mark, and John explore other alternatives and explain why Suboxone isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.
It's easy to see medication-assisted treatment as a cure for addiction, but the team explains that no medication is truly effective at managing addictive behaviors without psychosocial support like 12-step programs, therapy, and counseling. Mental health, in particular, plays a vital role in managing addiction, and John shares his insights into supporting medication-assisted treatment with mental health counseling.

Interesting ideas. I agree that there is an idustry of script-machines that fail to treat people as individuals with their use history. I appreciate that the panel can realize that their clientelle doesn't consist of people for whom MAT is working. I don't say this next part to insist that abstinence-only, 12-step programs don't work, but there is also a population of MAT patients that operate as an inversion to what the panel mentioned; that after several stays at different treatment centers, or working steps, it didn't work. They may find a way that works involving MAT. That doesn't invalidate the journey of the people who find success in those psychosocial strategies. To use either scenario as an opportunity to criticize either method, I think, is counter-productive and useless. Both methods have shortcomings, and their successes-- they don't compromise or threaten the other . I think that there is a real opportunity for an expression of the kind of respect, empathy and understanding that AA or NA literature wants to express. The disease of addiction is not a moral failing. But how one decides to manage it, is?

This one guy is a little bit obnoxious I can't really hear the other to speak because he is loud and he keeps interrupting. So just my opinion maybe that man could tone it down just a little bit

Very interesting...but so untrue for me...have a very bad cervical and lumbar injury from a line of duty injury back 21 years ago while working ( NYPD ). Have had 2 fusions C-6-7 and L4-5 and apparently my surgeon told me I need a 3rd surgery, lumbar area. I have been on roxycodine...percoset 120mg a day for the last 18 years and suboxone 8/2mg intermittently. I have never had an issue with suboxone at all...taking 2 strips daily for 4 months straight. And I've been taking oxycodone 15 or 10/325. Maybe I've been lucky. Never was in a fog. I'm currently taking 40mg of oxycodone which is a very low dose of pain medication...which I did by my own accord.

I know you're not looking for advice, but I'm going to throw some your way anyways, here goes...I'm 59 and have been addicted to opiates since I was 19, spend 3 stints on methadone and 4 on suboxone, after the past 8+ years I am finally getting off this shit, it's destroyed hormones and many other things, please do yourself a favor and get off this nasty shit, we were never meant to be on a more than a few years. Save yourself.

@@tytar1037, that's awesome! I'm only a week in from my last eighth of a strip and after all these years, this has been the most difficult, but hang in there there's light at the end of the tunnel, just do it and don't look back. Remember today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Long term sub use, u can come out of the fog and function on a high level of performance. Do sum up everyone. Yes it is over prescribed. Find the right level and have a good therapist who knows the med.

I’ve been on methadone for years and i wish i never got on it and i totally disagree with your opinion on cannabis it has helped many people get of opiates and i don’t believe cannabis is a gateway drug 98% of all addicts i knew got drunk way before they started doing drugs in fact buddy i went school with drank and took ecstasy and never smoked cannabis i believe cannabis does have it’s place in medicine if i could go back i wouldn’t got on methadone i would have just dabed and ate rso oil for the few days withdrawal from pills methadone withdrawal ive seen last for up to 6 months it’s freaking brutal why its called liquid handcuffs

I just started on Suboxone and i haven’t gone to my dealer looking for pills. My energy is back, I’m eating good. I’m a healthcare professional. Usually if your on Suboxone your on it for years if your serious. Yes I get a buzz but I don’t have cravings or withdrawal. There is no simple answer. There never will be.
