The chosen spaces are gorgeous. Most are quite neutral, minimal and scandi in style. I think I'd like to see a video of "subscribers homes I don't actually love, because they are not my style, but are fabulous rooms to love anyway," I'd like to see more eclectic/bohemian/art deco/rustic rooms with more personality, colour and pattern. I think it's easier to pull off the neutral palette, minimalist, scandi style ,as furniture and accessories in this style are so readily available at good retailers.Mixing styles while injecting more colour, pattern and personal items is more difficult to get right, and I'd like to see spaces where subscribers have done it well.
I think, maybe since this is Nick's personal style and his recomendations, often go along with his own style, most of his viewers have this style as well, I don't easily see a boho maximalist following Nick's channel, but I could be wrong.
I'm just reminded of that old saying: " I felt sad because I had no shoes ... until I met a man who had no class." The very fact that we know enough to subscribe to Nick's channel means we have hope. Of course I always Name Drop my fav designer. 😉
To those asking for more budget-friendly: the very first one has zero clutter, doesn’t even have window coverings it looks like, and Nick thinks the chairs are from Target. There is nothing that screams “money”! On to the next. Ok, all the way until 12:20 every space is basically Scandi-minimalist. There are no huge rooms in huge mansions, which I was expecting when I saw comments asking for more approachable homes. These are all doable!! 1) Declutter virtually everything 2) Thrift inspiration pieces. Voilà.
@mellocello187 I think every single furniture in no.4 is quite affordable pieces from Ikea. Wood finish on the walls can be a cheap option depending on the type of wood. But the windows and high ceilings are a bit much 💸
I love the commentary. It's so helpful to hear your insights. I don't always know what's making a space look great, so having you identify what's particularly working well in a space is invaluable.
I would like to see some variety in style. They all seem the same to me. Certainly no Robert Kime influence in any of them. They are all so clean and neat, very calm. Good job.
yep, same with me. Just a couple really appealed to me. I need to see lots of patterns, color, unique, very personal pieces, lots of Boho elements like rugs. Most of these looked the same and kinda unfinished to me.
Indian, Scandi, and Organic Modern Living Room were my faves. Congrats to all who were featured! Really enjoyed stepping into your spaces. Takes a lot of work to get our spaces just how we want them. 👏🏾😎
Wow it’s really fun to see other people’s spaces. I like a lot of what was shown, your subscribers are talented, sophisticated. I just want to see more color, art, and or print in general. Doesn’t have to be loud could just be one patterned pillow even. A beautiful large painting or print I think could be the cherry on top to a lot of these spaces too. Or like u said, making something that’s already there bigger.
I used to think they killed butterflies in those cases. NO! I was in Costa Rica at a butterfly house. They collect the dead ones and mount them. They only live a few weeks. I gave away my brother’s gorgeous framed mounted butterflies after he died, thinking the butterflies had been killed. After I learned how they are preserved in their gorgeous colors I wanted it back!
of course, I was going to say that. They don't kill them anymore since decades back, that would be unethical When in doubt about something, all it takes is a Google search.
Parquet is beautiful and the internal wood trim of the semi-arched doorways are divine, think i might have to pinch that idea. Top of the list, natural light, love, love, love. So many great moments in all of those homes. Great video.
Stop it no you did not actually feature my home 🫢🫣❤thank you Nick! Yes those chairs are from Target. I’ll level them up one day when I have the funds but for now they’re actually really comfortable!
Real books, coloured bindings, eye candy galore! My pet peeve has always been beige book look. If you need it make some book covers but for crying out loud why would the masses turn their books backwards. My heart beat faster when I saw that bookcase.
😊Do love a floor to ceiling library bookcase wall, esp. one built over a doorway or opening. It can be great in cosy traditionally stained wood w/ornate detailing or a simple modern classic version in white like featured here. 📚Books bring such warmth to a place, esp. when the homeowner enjoys reading actual books. Even better when there are intermixed w/other much loved 🗿collectibles🏺. BTW, coordinating books by color or putting them in matching dust jackets is NOT always about being "designery" or hip. 😳There are highly sensitive persons〰️ even diehard maximalistas like myself〰️who internally 🤜battle🤛 w/a bit of claustrophobia. However beautiful, cleverly collected, & curated〰️such an arrangement can FEEL quite imposing, heavy, & busy. As if the weight of all that good stuff can literally topple over you. 👁👁Staring at such a big, busy library wall & their contents can be extremely overwhelming at times for some folks. Although I wouldn't mind sitting opposite that one on a lazy day in a cosy chaise in a corner where I can take a break at reading, dreaming, doodling, etc. to quietly observe the whole tableau or each individual cubby display as desired. I simply wouldn't find it restful FACING😵 all that literary glory in a dining room, living room, or a bedroom. Places where you're meant to unwind & relax after a hectic day. Of course, there's a few tricks to minimize that overwhelming feeling. №1️⃣: Build🛠 that baby on a side wall where you only catch glimpses of it from your peripheral vision👀; №2️⃣ Locate it on a primary wall BEHIND the main 🛋seating💻/sleeping🛏 area where you'll only be focused on the immensity of it all when either entering or exiting the space; №3️⃣: Think about adding a strategic combo of solid & glass doors to help minimize all the drama; №4️⃣Make the books look less busy & hectic w/all the various colors & sizes. The uniformity of the book display will immediately calm your beleaguered senses. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
PART 2: 😊Created an elegant faux built-in bookcase wall. Using trim, molding, & paint: unified 4 tall double wide + 1 tall single wide Billy bookcase. We picked the longest main wall that spans from the 2nd opening of the kitchen to the sliding door of the balcony opposite. This wall basically serves as a backdrop to the L/R. It's opposite the 🖥media📻wall & adjacent to the fireplace🔥. So, from the seating you can 🤓see both of these key focal points. 📦As we were unpacking box after box of his beloved books, I could see his anxiety levels rising😵💫 just thinking about all the crazy confusion of colorful book jackets. This is a man not prone to maintaining his media in any complex order. Going alphabetical by genre or author would NEVER work, so I asked if I could try an experiment the next day when he was at work. Sorted them all by color, subject, & last size (big to short). The majority of his books were in black (film related) & white (biographies). Oddly enough, the other misc. colors were not only in similar shades, but also in similar topics (don't recall the exact genres after all this time😔). ▪︎Filled each end bookcase w/those two main colors. (Kept all books on specific filmmakers, filmmaking, or famous persons together.) Lastly, sorted each shelf by size. Placed ⬅️black books to the far left & ➡️white books to the far right. ▪︎The 2nd case from the left carried over more black books. Red books were the next largest grouping on the left. ▪︎The XL coffee table & cookbooks were stacked & sorted by color, size & subject in the single center tower bookcase. ▪︎The 2nd case from the right had a carry over of white books, blue was the next largest color grouping on that side. Plus, there was a smaller mix of orange, green & yellow covers. 😃He instantly felt more at peace w/this cohesive color arrangement👍. 🪛That's when we decided to add doors to help dial down⬇️ that color drama even more... I added 8 IKEA doors that were glass on top & solid panels below on the 4 big Billy's.The bright, noisy display got even quieter👏🏻. Ultimately, I shifted 🔃 the books a bit to keep the less important majority colors (& also some of minor book colors) below⬇️ the glass. Plus, he could keep now his large collection of standard sized cookbooks & baking books (that were all mismatched in color🤪) sight unseen together below. 😁He's happily lived w/this configuration for 7+ years. Plus, once the shelves were full, he's kept to a strict policy of "1 in=1 out". 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
I'm glad you didn't carp about the wallpaper on the convetable office...its the warm enveloping paint including the ceiling that really takes this to something special
I can't believe you actually featured our home 🥹 the cute pendant above the minimalist, scandi dining room is just a place holder until I can afford my dream light, a PH5. That will then be the most expensive piece of 'furniture' in our house 😅 I very much took your advice and went solid wood with the furniture. The chairs are the only plastic thing, because we have cats. But that's nothing that Ikea sheepskin rugs can't warm up 😌
This video is invaluable to those of us who are learning the general dos and don'ts of how to make a space look comfortable and beautiful. There were some obviously larger and "lifestyles of the rich and famous" type spaces (exaggeration), but many more "real" and accessible spaces that I can use to relate to my scale of decorating. Who knows...maybe one day I'll be able to send you some shots of my home : ) Thank you thank you thank you.
Thank you! I sent in my home photos and they don't come close to these beautiful homes. The best part of this Subscribers Home opportunity for me was the 3 or 4 videos you posted directly after asking for our photos. I learned so much more than i thought to ask.
Some beautiful spaces and well executed. Loved the wood in the arches. On a wider note I am sick to death of minimalist and mid century modern. It’s more HGTV overexposure. Give me warm and well appointed transitional or traditional. To each his own.
You should have different themes like best styled military housing, or dorm rooms, or office spaces. Like spaces your subscribers were given and the expectation is low, but really knocked it out of the park.
Holy muffins, the wood arch detail on that one near the start is INSANE! That is SO difficult to pull off even once, let alone consistently through every archway in the home! Absolute respect to the finish carpenter that made that happen!
Yes! They somehow got all the arches in the home to have the same curve radius despite being made of different materials for different purposes! Incredible
Nick notices the small plant but not the striking round mirror with edge lighting next to it (5:16). I don't usually like modernist design but this look is exceptional.
I like that you are giving your viewers some credit. I love the eggplant room! That ceiling medallion is da bomb! I would love to see them do something bold with paint or wallpaper on the ceiling around the medallion - maybe something to match the rug? People, I want to see more art, more colour, more, more! Bravo!
😊Me too. Always loved big clocks...working or not. Multiple time pieces if you have 👤people👥️️ or traveled to cool 🏛places🏖 in other time zones around the world🌎 that you want to be reminded of every time your 👁👁glance falls on them. 😉Of course, I am a sentimental maximalist. For all his snarkiness, he's got some softness in there. This clock has nostalgia & continuity. 🤫His hanging it again shows he also has a touch of whimsy. ❤Loving Nick's new goatee. 😬Not a big mustache fan, but I don't mind a minimal one connected to a neatly trimmed beard. Adds extra interest to his familiar face. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
Please do not. Every home can be beautifully styled even on budget. The most important is the loving relationships with those with whom you share the home with 😊
😁The farmhouse adjacent bedroom〰️ & the small office w/the blue sofa〰️were my 🎉favorites🎉 of this grouping. 🤔Although the beautifully crafted wood molding in the house w/all the curved openings was next level🤯. 🚫 Shocking that most of your choices were quiet, minimal w/an earthy & modern beauty. Quite lovely spaces, but on the stark side for this maximalista😂. Thx for suggesting the one person lower⬇️ the art 🖼 centered above their sofa 🛋. My biggest pet peeve is art hung too high⬆️. My next one is petite art that's way out of scale for the furnishing &/or the room's proportions. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
The parquet floor room breaks a few rules you preach on. the furniture is pressed up against the walls and the rug is either too small or poorly placed.
Hi, that's my home. I would love to have some ideas on how to decorate it, if you like to share your thoughts. I Just moved in, so it feels kind of empty still. But I already love the buffet and dining area.
@@luisafalcao720 Oh boy. I'm not a gifted decorator. I just know that actual decorators, including Nick, say that a rug should be large enough for all furniture in that seating area to have at least their front legs on the rug. I don't know if you need a bigger rug or if it could just be placed differently. They also advise against pushing furniture against the walls. I don't know if the size/shape of your room allows for that. Bottomline, it's your home. Do what works with your life and makes you happy. I do love your parquet floor. It breaks my heart when people tear them out for being "dated". Parquet is classic. You are lucky to have them.
Oh Nick, I could watch your videos all day. You’re such a treat. Really enjoyed your critique of these homes. Thanks for sharing your design expertise and impeccable taste with all of us!
Hi, I forgot your channel/name but wanted to refer to one of your videos about chairs, so I searched “Canadian interior design guy” and sure enough you were the first option. Hehe. Thank you for your wisdom my dude
“Kill butterflies” LMAO. No, they are collected after deceased and are pinned and framed :) beautiful creatures. Totally not weird if you are into anything whimsical or have a background in biology, ecology, and or entomology of course :)
The “mid century Canadian home’s” architecture is Arts and Crafts, probably built in the 1920s. Look at the millwork and the piano windows. This house reminds me a lot of the 1924 house I used to own in Winnipeg. Loved that house!
I’d love to see you do with your subscribers who are renters. We are military, and I wish I had a fireplace, or able to have more than just boob lights(I hate them). I did do stick on tile for the kitchen which isn’t like “nice” per se but I love how it looks and make our boring base housing.
Great video, absolutely lovely homes, BUT, poor me, I live in a builder grade tract home. I have added upgrades and would love a video showing what can be done with a 1500 square ft home. Thanks Nick. You're the best😊
I loved seeing the broken clock back. Just because of you I kept my broken clock that I love so much. I bought it brand new and it never worked, but I love the aesthetic.
there are 2 reasons why the wishbone chair is never overdone 1.although it's the designers favorite , you actually don't see it allover in private homes, and it's timeless
I love these positive videos! I hope you do this again, because we are in the middle of a reno( i.e. no kitchen, washing dishes in the shower), but would love to be included a future episode!
Wow! Those homes are amazing. Ermagerd. Excellent job on keeping moving on the commentary. 👍😂 "Pop of colour." I occasionally say it accidentally and find a salt rinse or Listerine necessary. 😂😂
One of these days I will get the courage to send you some of my home pictures, all done by myself and my husband...come on courage...loved the last home, my colors and a pup in the mix...love, love.
This style of video is so helpful to me, please do more, I do not like looking at magazines because there is not commentary, what's right/wrong/what could be better, please do more
I feel like the back wall needs something or maybe change the angle of which you are filming. Something is off and I cant put my finger on it . ❤ your channel and your design advice!
I think that wood accent that was in his kitchen at the other house needs to be there, or a bookshelf of some sort, theres too much empty space so it looks unbalanced.
I'm staying in a home that breaks so many of your rules/ suggestions. Multiple word signs EVERYWHERE. There are 6 in my bathroom alone! Ball jars as decor. TV is mounted sky high. Dozens of kitschy fall/ Halloween decor in LR, dining room, kitchen, porch. Papasan chair that looks like a fluffy gray cat. It's clean and comfortable here, and I wouldn't have been aware of these faux pas' before I started watching you.
Some of these demonstrate how the minimalist look does not work when it comes to leaving walls bare. Bare walls may work if there is interesting architecture, but these bare walls are screaming for some decor/art.
