Substance 3D just released their all new Unity plugin and it's very very very good. You can use Substance 3D Designer ssbar files directly inside the Unity game engine, even if you don't own Susbtance Designer. We also look at where you can get some substance materials for free.

This is some of the best news I've heard in a long while! Earlier this week I've been try to get ProBuilder and PolyBrush to work. This won't replace those but it sure will help for future uses.

The problem with this substance plugin are adobe does not release constant updates to support multiple unity versions and this plugin gets deprecated very fast. So building a workflow around this plugin gets very risky and frustrating.

you can create textures in other version then copy to your game and use standard material. Just need use correctly maps. Some maps use alpha channel so u need to experiment with import settings

In the past they implemented it to unity and it was just very very unstable, making the editor and the crash quite often. I hope this time it will be better.

I had similar experience. It was good to fine tune the color, normal and tiling inside the game where you see it in the actual environment. But the constant loading and crashing made me pull out my hair. If they fixed the issues then it's really good tool imo.

Severe slow downs and crashes are no more now that data is transferred using Scriptable objects. You mostly only pay the CPU cost of the node graphs recompile itself like you would in substance eco system

I tried this long ago and the plugin was very bad, Seems like they fixed up a lot of things and I'm excited to try this since I still have over 700gb of SBSAR files from old work I've done. I really hope it's stable and they keep the plugin up to date.

But you will end with lots of individual materials and lots of drawcalls. What about a way to combine the materials to reach the 1 mesh one 1 material?

In 2018 or something they had that cool live link to painter but they dropped the support for that. Seems like this is not a direct replacement.

You can also use the free Substance Player. You must find the link own your own because every time I link, my post gets deleted.

all rust is because of oxidization but not all rust has the same amount of redness do to oxidization. So amount of rust might be talking about the surface area that has begun to oxidize and oxidization might be talking about how red is that rust

Welp, can't use it. Just get a crapton of ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index whenever I import any .sbsar

Rusting over time But wouldn't that be a waste of resources though? As it would be generating a new texture everytime you updated it? Which could be every frame depending

well, I would say it would be best to implement something like that by changing the material a little bit every once in a while, maybe 3 or four changes until the object was fully rusted and not actually changing it procedurally bit by bit as for example a slow animation of rusting would just waste resources. So kind of like how you wouldn't make a character age year by year in a game but instead skip a few years (maybe every 10 years) to illustrate the aging process but it's not changing the character but instead replacing the 3d model or using shape keys/blendshapes in that instance.

It should reuse the textures, changing their pixels instead of creating new ones. Still it is not good for performance to be reloading textures like that to the GPU. Usually you would handle these effects with a shader, just moving an alpha threshold to show/hide the rust. I bet you could use substance textures with your own shaders or with shadergraph.

I was dissapointed with how pointless this all is. You can not change textures in realtime from what I've seen so far. This is not a procedural system, it just renders textures using procedural algorithms in substance and passes the bitmaps to blender, unity, etc. I noticed everyone promoting this plugin keeps saying you can change textures at runtime and using the terms runtime and realtime interchangeabley. Runtime can technically be the very first lines of the program ran, so for all intents and purposes, it updates the changes before unity or unreal starts. Unless I'm missing something, very bummed out.

Lol, thanks no... Unity and Subscance had their chance years ago. Every time I was hyped for something new in Unity it got destroyed in a very frustrating way. However, I really appreciate your content. Good video!

The real question is once you’re done messing with the materials can you export it with the textures edited to have your unity HDRPPBR maps so you don’t have to use the substance file as a shader

This is another unity abandonware project. I wanted to use it to procedurally change materials through code, but there is no documentation or forum answers.

You can buy Substance designer/painter without subscription on Steam. But I agree, it's only a matter of time before Unity announces some kind of premium subscription for core features

I love this channel but HATE so much the fact that Mike never posts the actual link to whatever he's talking about, instead you are forced to visit his website... unless he's talking about a humble bundle where he gets money out of it, then he makes sure the link is in the description...

not a superfan of that either BUT at least when a link goes sour, as they have in the past, the video doesn't get pulled and you still get a reference page for what was supposed to be there. Also youtube has a censor bot on many software links, even if they are correct and non-malicious.
