In this video I show an update on the growth of our Spiritus Sancti in certain substrates! We’ve been running an experiment for 3 months now with spiritus Sancti in different substrates (Leca, pon, stratum, and aroid mix). This experiment is still ongoing but I think we definitely have some lessons we can take from it so far!! Thanks for watching and remember to like and subscribe to Green Chick Gardens for more content!

Cool experiment!! It’s nice to see the results from experiments - very satisfying 👀 I also love semi hydro!

Yes I was quite pleased with the results so far, thanks for watching!

I use Pon and Stratum, more than my chunky mix. Also mixing just a little pon or perlite in with the stratum is super helpful! Thanks for the great content. Loved the way you ended this one.

I ordered some petite to do exactly that! Will help spread the pricey stuff out a little further!

Excellent growth rate for a plant that is considered slow. I liked the bird calls at the end. I bought a dwarf schefflera moondrop to make into bonsai. How are your bonsai doing?

Thanks! They are juuust starting to wake up. Hopefully we can do a video or two of them before too long!

I find that Leca takes a while for Philodendrons to establish. I think it is due to how fine their roots are generally. But once they have established, they grow rapidly. Will be interested to see a 12 month comparison.

Yes! Like I said I would not label this experiment over yet. I have a couple dragons in Leca that took off like rockets!

How about growing Spiritus Sancti in sphagnum moss? I grow mine in moss, do you think it's worth it to change to pon? Thanks!

I'm enjoying your videos and your amazing plant collection. I'm wondering how deep you keep the water in the reservoirs. I also a few spiritus in pon but I'm keeping the water level very low and letting it dry out for a couple days before adding more out of fear of rotting them.

Thank you so much! So I’ve never really experienced rotting with my spiritus (and I’ve got 10 I believe) I always err on the side of under-watering for sure! And with these particular plants I do indeed let their water reservoir go completely dry before I refill. When I refill, they normally sit about a half inch deep in the water I would say. Give or take a couple cm.

I ordered an Alocasia dragon scale and black velvet and have them both in stratum which they are doing okay in but now I want to stick them in Lechuza. I had to order my Lechuza off of eBay from a plant store in Canada since you can’t find it anywhere right now. Lechuza does have the basic pon back in stock, it just doesn’t have fertilizer in it. I don’t know how much difference that makes though.

I still love my stratum as well! Especially on smaller stuff, most of my small alocasias are in stratum right now!

I’ve mixed pon & stratum & while nothing horribly negative came from it, I don’t recommend it. The stratum breaks down, turns into mud, gets messy, & could possibly mess with the airiness of pon.

I can see it. There is definitely some “sludge” build it time to time from stratum

Still you my have to work on your fertilizing game. You should test semi hydroband different fertilizer
@GreenChickGardens

Yes, but that’s getting into scientific measurables that I don’t think I’m qualified for 😂

Have you tried growing them in drier, hotter, higher light conditions? I heard this causes the plant to produce long narrow leaves
@GreenChickGardens
@GreenChickGardens 2 месяца назад
Hmm interesting I hadn’t heard that. My conditions in the greenhouse have become a lot hotter and drier as spring has come around, we will see if that has any effect on the new leaves!

The experiments keep the hobby fresh. I'm currently working with a coco mix and wick, to keep the substrate damp and finding great success....pon has never worked for me
@GreenChickGardens
@GreenChickGardens 2 месяца назад
You don’t find it keeps the coco too moist?

Fluval is the best for fast results before putting a plant on PON

Interesting. I grow mine in a mix of coconut husk chips, perlite and charcoal and while it has grown, the leaves are not putting on the size that I think they should. So, am I not watering enough or not feeding enough? I guess I will try increasing the fertilizer first because I don't think water is the issue, it has a very nice root system.
@GreenChickGardens
@GreenChickGardens 2 месяца назад
I honestly don’t fertilizer too heavily… but it will definitely help!

@@GreenChickGardens I've spent so many years growing orchids and African Violets, I just can't seem to get used to the idea that other types of plants might require a heavier feed. I'm not even giving half the dosage recommended on the bottle, so I will just experiment with increasing the nutrients on some of the plants.
@kesselbrenner

Should be done on a larger scale if you want to draw any conclusions. In reality pon could be the “worst” substrate for your environment and simply repotted the most vigorous specimens in that substrate.
@GreenChickGardens

Well yes but I don’t have 100 spiritus laying around 🤣 it was more just a for fun experiment. It’s fun to tinker.
