In summer, ‪@XaviersBonsaiRetreat‬ wondered whether it is possible to take late summer cuttings of trident maple. We did a synchronized trial and present the results in this video, each using slightly different methods. Who had a better outcome? What substrate did better? Join and see!

I took about 20 late fall cuttings of Japanese maples--all in water. the 10 or so that I placed an air stone/pump in all produced roots; none of the others without an air stone/pump lived.

Very interesting video Jelle! I'm sooo reluctant to use moss or peat though, because wetlands are so important for the climate and shouldn't be exploited. Maybe the vermiculite was just too wet?

Heya RC, the stuff is cutpaste. It is sold in specialized bonsai stores, and is better for bonsai than the regular wound treatment used on big trees

I wonder which medium (sphagnum moss or vermiculite ( would be the best for growing the cuttings after they are rooted)? Would it be better to put the cuttings into individual small) pots initially so they can develop without having to disturb them by having to repot? It is very disappointing to finally have some success when taking cuttings and then watch them fade away. Perhaps it's a whole subject on its own. It is disappointing if you finally have some (limited) success and watch them fade away. Thanks in advance for any advice (love this channel)
@GrowingBonsai

@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Год назад
I too have pretty good success once they are transplanted into bonsai mix. The only issue I used to have was leaving the cutting too long before transplanting - I used to worry that the roots wouldn't be storng enough.
