Here's how I installed my kitchen's subway tile backsplash behind the hob back in August 2020. I love subway/metro tiles - it's an easy and simple way to transform your cooking space.
I talk you through planning, tips from past experiences from cracked tiles, cutting around sockets and more.

Great job looks fab,I’m a tiler by trade so just one point which may help others,don’t use PVA as it turns live again if you manage to get water behind the tiles,the best way to go is to use SBR.

Thank you Vicki's for a very well and presented video. I've watched around 20, today and yours has, finally, given me all the answers and now the confidence, to make a start on mine, which follows the exact, same layout. Thanks again and by the way, I'm a Carpenter, but don't, unfortunately, have a daughter, especially as talented as you. 😊

Managed to tile my kitchen during lockdown. Made a fairly good job of it. Got a big area tiled before i had to do any cuts. Ended up with a full box and a part box left in the end. Think i had one socket where it wasnt a brilliant cut but luckily it covered ok. I gave up with a tile float in the end and used a squeegee.

that's a really good job only thing i would say is just remove the outlet cover completely and get spacers afterward, and to help people out more tell them how to measure the actual cuts, thats the hardest part abput tiling ,

Lovely looking job done. When I tile I prefer to butter the back of the tile and squish it on. This is good if you have an uneven surface to level up the tiles👍
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 2 года назад
I did have to do that during my first ever tiling job! I'd left the adhesive on too long and made a couple loose while scrubbing too hard so would have to apply on the back of tiles.

Hi, one tool that I have found incredibly useful for tiling and lots of other tasks is a laser level, these have come down in price and are now affordable by anyone. I used to use a spirit level and needed several for use because of getting them in awkward places where a laser level projects a beam of light that can go anywhere that it is needed and although mine cost me a lot of money because they where not a tool used by a hobbyists they can now be bought for as little as £30.00. I am now too old (71) to use then often you are quite young and will find lots of uses in years to come. One small point, you should use your grouting tool at a 45-degree angle to the tiles as the grout will fill the area much easier.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK

Looks good. I was thinking about ripping out the subway tile in my bathroom and replacing it with some much larger tiles. Currently the grout is white (or should be white). Too hard to keep clean. Perhaps I'll dye the grout a dark color first and if I don't like it, out it comes. Thanks for posting.

2 good tips always use acrylic primer some you can tile on after 30 minutes and trowel lines pointing down 👇 ⬇️ so monster leaves adhesives quicker and doesn't stain grout , great job tho 👏

Really good video as usual did you use silicone between the gap of the worktop and tiles also if you have any small tiles you can also just put an even layer of tile adhesive with the tile trowel onto the tile just a tip ive used myself keep up the good work
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 2 года назад
Thanks :) Luckily I didn't need to this time. I did exactly that during my first ever tiling project as some came loose while trying to clean adhesive off after leaving it on too long 🙈 And no... not yet 😆 I've promised myself I'll silicone next week. I damaged the silicone tube that matches the grout I picked and it went off, so need to go out and buy another 😬

@@elbishopeb Emma, the best tip for sealant is to apply a line with the applicator then wet a finger and go over it again. This will give you a nice smooth line of sealant without it sticking to your finger because it's wet.

The work top is it a real quartz work top? as I remember you did a video of a work top cover that was a cheaper version of a quartz cover work top.

The only person who should be using PVA when it comes to plaster, is the plasterer, once they've finished NEVER use PVA to prep a wall, use a plaster primer or a diluted mix of emulsion paint & don't put tile spacers in between tiles in the T like she did, you should remove all the spacers otherwise it weakens the grout & you will end up with cracks where the spacer were left & even if you regrout it the cracks will come back.
