To me he was an afterthought too, which is a testament to the writing, until episode 4x2, where he said he never needed love and it finally hit me what his entire character was about. And on my rewatch it colored my view of him in a whole different light, especially all of his interactions with Logan. It’s heart breaking.

It’s the calm way that Frank delivers it. Like this clearly is not the first time that Frank had to deliver crushing news about his father to Ken. And for once, Frank doesn’t have to bother himself by “shitting around” or delicately tiptoeing around Logan’s authoritative rules. He doesn’t have to bullshit Ken in that moment, and he doesn’t, and it results in one of the sweetest fatherly moments in the show. You can hear the compassion dripping off of Frank’s solemn words. No wonder Ken struggles to keep it together after hanging up.

@@liljackypaperHey, Roman may be a strange little puppy, but he actually does have quite the heart when time calls for it. The way he was the first one to consider Connor! The sheer gall to kill Logan off-screen, early in the season, with no setup or payoff, is a signature achievement of this show. That really is how death is for most of us, on the other end of a phone call after they're gone. That said, much like the finale of "The Sopranos", this is a legendary moment that no other show can pull off without feeling like a cheap imitation.

Connor's talk with Willa is so...weirdly heartwarming. For the first time in the show a character just lays their cards on the table and has a frank discussion with their partner. Its not a typical romance, the amount of real love involved is debatable, but it is honest and in the end, for a family full of lies, manipulation, and mean spirited jabs having a relationship that honest is a victory all its own.

I appreciate the inclusion of 'unconventional' grieving because grief can make people act bizarre. But I hate seeing people put blame on themselves for not grieving 'proper.' it's already an incredibly shitty time for you, it sucks to also put that on your shoulders. There’s something about this episode that I don’t quite know how to explain. They nail the feeling of ‘the day a family member dies’ in the tone and like interactions you have with your family members. You might be distant, you might argue, you might hate being around each other. But for a day or two when family pass you band together, and it’s high stress, and you argue and there’s misunderstandings, but there’s like this overwhelming sense of looking out for each other, of you all being stuck in that day together and clinging on to each other to just get through. That hug at the end couldn’t have happened on any other day; no matter what the situation, what happens after or what came before, when it comes down to ‘the day’, family is still family.

just absolutely excellent acting all around, but especially the kids-seeing them being unable to cope, their clumsy attempts at comforting each other, trying to take control of a situation they’re completely helpless in. such a messy and raw and real portrayal of grief. i also just really love that after everything, willa and connor managed to find love in a hopeless place, completely honest with each other about their relationship, surrounded by the few people who actually cared about them (vs the initial plan of big drama and great fanfare)

This episode had me bawling. Part if it hit close to home: I lost my father a few years ago and also found out over the phone in a similarly confusing way where he seemed to be both alive and dead. The actors all nailed that creeping confusion and horror. But it’s also a testament to the writing and direction that makes this episode hit so hard, and it feels so natural: the loss of a loved one more often than not just comes out of the blue, and the bottom drops out from under you. The Roy’s are despicable people in a lot of ways but they had my complete sympathy here.

Another thing to look for is the making of this episode - interesting fact is they shot the entire boat sequence as one long scene with multiple camera change outs. Incredible filmaking - especially since this show is shot on actual film and not digitally.

Watched this episode about 2 months when I had just lost my paps. Damn, it was heart wrenching, happened almost the same way. Getting the late night phone calls and so forth. Anyways love the show, love from Uganda ❤.

I called it all through episodes 1 and 2 of this season. The idea was that it's the last season so he HAS to be dying but I was still pretty surprised. I thought it was handled brilliantly. It happened off camera and so sudden. The stuff happening with Tom and Shiv made me completely disregard what Tom could have possibly been calling about and even when Tom called Roman I, like Roman assumed it was something to do with checking in on how he handled the Gerri thing. I understand why you're sad completely because it is sad and I think as viewers of this show we could feel the love and affection these characters have for each other even if it's twisted and they're extremely greedy and ambitious. Maybe some part of us hoped they'd work things out and come to a good conclusion but life doesn't really work out like that.

This felt too real. A few years ago, my very healthy uncle unexpectedly passed in his sleep at 50. My mom, his sister, called me to let me know, and the disbelief and shock that is portrayed in the show is incredibly accurate. Lemony Snicket has this profound quote that I really find beautiful and sad: “It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.” The grief in the episode is palpable and awful, but I do love the episode for giving him the respect he deserved in death.

There's something tragic, but ironic about how after 3x08 premiered, my grandmother passed away the next day, and with 4x03, it reminded me of when I got that call from my stepmom, that was, for the first time watching this series, that i hugely empathised with the Roys.

Unfortunately Reddit spoiled the episode for me weeks in advance (well, i spoiled it for myself -- I chose to read the threads). I'd give anything to see this episode for the first time completely unprepared.
